Getting My Goat

The NY Times astonishes us with this New Year's weekend correction:

In article on Oct. 30 about a videotaped message from Osama bin Laden in which he told the United States that it could avoid a repetition of the 9/11 attacks if it stopped threatening Muslims' security referred incorrectly to material being read in a Florida classroom where President Bush was visiting when he learned of the attacks. (The error also appeared in earlier articles, starting on May 23.) The reading was a story - not a book - and it was titled "The Pet Goat," not "My Pet Goat." A reader telephoned last week to point out the error.

Huh?  On the list of things I thought I knew, "My Pet Goat" as the answer to "What was the book Bush read in the Florida classroom on 9/11?" ranks pretty high.  And the error is widespread - Google has about 29,000 hits for "My Pet Goat", and only 9,000 for "The Pet Goat" (and we can cite this Powerline entry as a recent propagation of the misperception).  Thank heaven I have not been invited onto "Jeopardy".

How can so many people be so wrong?  I am blaming Michael Moore, although I applaud his sense of irony.  The Pet Goat story came to fame as part of Fahrenheit 9/11, as we all know.  Well, here at his website, in the post that provides the factual foundation for the movie, Mr. Moore quite clearly describes the story as "My Pet Goat".  He does not offer a source, however.  Well, maybe the rest of the movie has a stronger basis in reality.  Maybe.

I think its a legitimate question. Bush is still human. Accepting that he continued to read for 5 minutes cause he was confused/didn't know what to do is fine. Those 5 minutes probably wouldn't have helped anyway. Its an acceptable error -- even though PR wise, its near god damn awful. I just haven't read what a rational conservative response is. "Project Calm" is obviously a joke. Why do you have to resort to, if a democrat said it, we can just ignore it ?

Nice mindreading Jor. Ever think we might be ignoring it because it's stupid? When even you admit "[t]hose 5 minutes probably wouldn't have helped anyway," it's a safe bet there's nothing constructive the President could have done. In that case, the choices appear to be: 1) continue reading as scheduled; 2) dither aimlessly; or 3) run in circles, scream and shout. With that list, the logical choice is obvious, and the main reason for the choice is in fact to "project calm." In any event, most of us consider this a non-issue, and the Dem cries for an explanation (or an "official line of reasoning"), just another example of strident idiocy from the left.

And at the risk of abetting thread hijacking, Sully's overwrought "torture" treatment is of a piece with the whole Michael-Moore-inspired "Nero fiddling while Rome burns" meme. Does Sully truly believe lights, obnoxious music, and "stress positions" are "what any sane person would call torture"? And does he truly believe "no grown-up military officer would approve" such measures? Nonsense. And until Democrats (and the left in general) come up with an alternate proposal for how, exactly, unlawful combatants should be treated, ignoring them seems reasonable. And for all Sully's snark, Glenn's evaluation of the current political argument is spot-on:

Cecil -- regarding Bush, the best thing for him to do would have been to leave immeadetily and take charge. IT might not have helped, but that's what he should have done. Is it really that hard to say that?

In regards to torture -- although Glenn has a point or two in his marathon post (towards the end) -- it reeks of "I am a bush hack". In terms of the politization or the discussion -- its completely a result of most conseravtives showing no integrity whatsover (c.f Volokh, Reason, The Economist). What's amazing is, even just a few days ago, Glenn couched his concern for holding people for life on no evidence as "This seems bad, bu tI could be wrong". Glenn knows all this. So, this only leave one plausible conclusion -- HACK-TACK-ULAR.

Sounds a lot like "dither aimlessly" to me--and sorry, but I don't see the point. By the time we had a clue what was happening, there was no way of stopping the remaining airliners. (And the only decision to be made--to shoot them down--had already been taken . . . the system was simply incapable of executing it.) The President "taking charge" five minutes earlier would have accomplished precisely nothing. Part of the President's job is ceremonial, and finishing the story, though trivial, was at least somewhat constructive. Panicking in front of the kids would not be.

No, more like most liberals having zero clue on martial matters. Traditionally, combatants are detained for the duration of the conflict (on bare suspicion). Al Qaeda can secure the release of the innocents instantly by surrendering--but if they're stupid enough to start an endless war, too bad for their fighters.

One high point of the Gonzales hearings was when the Dem experts acknowledged Al Qaeda operatives were clearly unlawful combatants and had no rights to POW status. Maybe Sully (et al) could start the move toward intellectual honesty by acknowledging that little point.

Cecil, You didn't make an argument you repeated yourself, and try to maintain an absurd position regarding the goat story. When Clinton lied to the country about Monica, he did something wrong -- but in the end it really wouldn't effect his ability to govern. See -- is it that hard to say something about Bush and the Goat? It would say "I'm not an bush-bot hack who cant think for myself". In terms of torture, I have nothign to say, other than all the sources I cited are conservative. And you are basically the problem they are all talking about.

And of course that's perfectly analogous to lying to a grand jury under oath . . . or fixing testimony of the other witnesses . . . or even the underlying sexual harassment charge (I thought you liberals cared about such stuff?).

And if my choices are between Glenn and Sully on treatment of unlawful combatants, I'll go with the lawyer. However, I'd point out the actual authority for such cases is the military, since it's a military proceeding under the auspices of the Executive Branch . . . and has little to do with the court system.

Yeah, the "pet goat" book reading isn't the biggest issue ever. But there were still planes in the air while Bush was reading, and a shoot-down decision was pending, IIRC. He had plenty to do. Instead, he froze in the headlights of history. It undercuts the "decisive" leader thing a bit; fair game in the polemics wars, I think.

Re Glenn-vs-Sully-on-torture, I think Glenn's straddling the fence: I'm against torture, but I'm against Dems saying so to Gonzales, because Rush Limbaugh will succeed in smearing them as soft on terror.

I'd call that a bit of an understatement. And IMO attempts of those (like Michael Moore) to make it one backfired badly. I also don't agree on the substance of the charge. There's an old saw about aviation emergencies, which contends the first step is to wind your watch (the point being to avoid knee-jerk reactions likely to make the situation worse, and promote a calm atmosphere for dealing with the crisis). Racing to the nearest command center might've had some minimal effect, but I doubt it (and again, the shoot-down decision didn't appear to be a problem).

Yeah, aren't we all. But the problem is the contention by some (e.g., Sully) that Al Qaeda operatives deserve to be treated in strict compliance with Geneva Convention POW standards (which prohibit "any unpleasant or disadvantageous treatment of any kind")--which they clearly don't rate. Or ridiculously loose definitions of "torture" (e.g., the ICRC's, which would include being uncertain about how long they were going to be detained). Or attempted conflation of DOD interrogation guidelines with the silly recreational sadism by some criminal idiots at Abu Ghraib.

Yeah, it's being treated just like a "frat prank." Eight years for SSG Frederick (Calley got what for My Lai, ten years, actually serving two?), Spc Armin Cruz got eight months, Spc Garner's trial starts today, with Sgt Jamal's, Spc Harman's, and Pfc England's to follow. For standing by (and failing to report) Spc Ambuhl got busted to private. All these individuals would love to claim they were "just following orders" . . . but it's a non-sale. Greyhawk has an entertaining quiz on the matter, with rather more factual information than either Sully or Matt Welch could manage.

And I'm sorry, but it's an entirely different issue from the DOD interrogation guidelines concerning Al Qaeda members. Which neither applied at Abu Ghraib, nor were extended to Iraqis in general, nor were ever issued as orders to the "frat" folks pulling off "pranks."

The "frat prank" comparison has been around since the CBS story initially broke back in May (the first usage was in a phone comment to Rush, I believe). There are so many references to college hazing (including several at the Corner--some apparently deriding silly "torture" definitions--and the usual pointless stuff from Derbyshire), that it's impossible to tell which you're referencing. But the contention their position is that Abu Ghraib was a frat prank is your strawman.

Besides, NR's (Lowry's) positions are well summed up by Welch in the Reason piece you referenced and his own current article on the Gonzales nomination. His actual position (and mine) is essentially Welch's "Bad-appling." To wit: criminal behavior by assorted individuals, now being punished at courts-martial.

That's nicely vague. And the very inconvenient fact (for your side) is the overwhelming evidence that the Abu Ghraib abuses were not ordered by military superiors, nor was there any connection with the DOD interrogation guidelines. And the ringleaders were former prison guards with checkered history on prisoner treatment. Which you might be able to pin on Rumsfeld in a "you-hired-idiots-for-the-job" sort of way--but isn't very persuasive for the "government authorized torture" argument.

Cecil, regarding Abu Ghraib, I'm not going to repeat the past years worth of news to you -- read the reports and the stuff in Lancet as a starting point -- then go to the memos and the FBI stuff. Rummy's own commission basically placed blame on HIM. The military medical system was involved. It wasn't just in Abu Ghraib.

Unfortunately, I have to retun to the reality-based community and do something more useful with my time. So this shall be my last post (TM, time to celebrate!), and someone else will have to take up the mantel to try and de-brainwash you.

Wow, news flash. I think we all got that part, Jor--you guys think the evil Administration ordered the whole thing and the poor guards are scapegoats. Unfortunately, nobody can find an order (or someone in a position to give one) authorizing that sort of thing, nor would it be legal in any event. (Which probably explains why several of the perpetrators entered guilty pleas.)

Oh, there was more than one night's worth of incidents? Oh my. Actually Jor, I've read the reports, and I've got bad news for you: when you have hundreds of thousands of soldiers running armed through a country, some of them abuse the locals (and each other, the local livestock, etc.). Sometimes they even kill them (he got six months, the Court must've believed it was an accident). That's why we have courts-martial.

If you want to claim it's scapegoating, you need to show some connection with the chain of command--that the accused were following orders. According to reports, Spc Garner's going to try that defense, and maybe we'll learn something new. But I doubt it, because MG Taguba's investigation was thorough and explicit on the point, and nothing since has called it into question (certainly the FBI e-mails didn't). Besides, it smacks of desperation, because while it'd be a factor in mitigation, it's still not a defense (and hasn't been since Nuremberg). Nobody with a passing familiarity with how the military works would even try this argument unless they had absolutely nothing else.

I suspect the remainder of the accused (especially Spc Garner and Sgt Jamal) will claim they received orders from the MI types in the prison (some of whom are currently awaiting their own courts). They'll also have to claim they were too stupid to realize the MI types weren't in their chain of command--or that the orders were illegal. Maybe it'll work out for them . . . but I doubt it.
