Now Who's A Bigger Jerk?

Patterico wonders just how big a jerk he is, but concludes (sensibly) that he is an even bigger genius:

...what happens if you Google “Patterico” together with “jerk”?  That’s right, baby: 45,600 hits.  (That’s almost 184 times as many as Simers.)

Okay, that sounds about right. But the whole theory kind of falls apart when you Google “Patterico” together with “genius” and come up with 70,000 results.

Well.  As part of our ongoing effort to prove that there is no topic so small that we cannot grind it to an even finer powder, let's calculate the Patterico Genius/Jerk ratio:

Patterico: 70,000/45,600  = 1.54

For myself, the ratio is 18,200/13,100, or 1.39

And how about a few others:

Glenn Reynolds:  150,000 / 105,000 = 1.43

Atrios:  268,000 / 162,000 = 1.65

Mickey Kaus: 75,200 / 51,700 = 1.402

Now, we are on the verge of a Grand Unifying Theory possibly worthy of the Da Vinci Code - it appears that the "Genius / Jerk" ratio is stable at roughly 1.5, which is tantalizingly close to the "Golden Mean" of the Fibonacci sequence, roughly 1.61.

Could it be that we have discovered a new phenomenon, the "Golden Meanness"?  Could it be that the ratio of praise to criticism is showered on folks in proportion to the Golden Mean?

Further testing leaves us gloomily resigned to a future in something other than this heretofore untapped branch of social science:

George Bush:  2,250,000 / 951,000 = 2.37

Al Gore: 940,000 / 441,000  = 2.13

I can't explain that.

Excellent/ I was afraid you'd leave out the Fibonacci sequence..(Of course, Jason Leopold is a better match for the Fib-A-Notte sequence.)

jeff jerk 2,180,000
jeff genius 7,730,000

Not everyone uses the word jerk to express their derision or disamy. Hard left sites frequently use language for "jerk" that would be expurgated on other websites. On the other hand, folks who mean to use the term genius use it. (And even comparatively mellow lefty bloggers, like Kevin Drum, have commenters who think community standards are for wimps.)

I think your ratio is therefore going to be skewed, and probably has a bias against left wing bloggers. (I figure the religious component of the right is going to be less likely to use the cuss word synonyms for jerk.)

Hmmmm.

Sorry TM but I've got you beat.

"ed" & genius: 16,400,000

"ed" & jerk: 3,840,000

Why yes thank you. I am rather supreme at that. *And* my breath is minty fresh too.

:)

I called the emptywheelers a circle jerk once but my stats are sad and insignificant

Cecil was 782,000/153,000 for a 5.11; and I was feeling pretty good about it, until I tried Einstein: 4.88 mil/ 378,000 for a 12.9 . . . okay, but he was a professional.

BTW: "golden meanness" had me rolling.

If you've read Einstein's correspondence with his first wife while they were in the midst of preparing to get divorced, you would know that in fact Einstein has more claim to the "jerk" title than most. At least for that period of time.

(Some things you just shouldn't commit to paper...)

cathy :-)

Since the golden mean is an irrational number the g/j ratio can only approach it...

A fair number of the geniuses I've known (and I mean both the real, acknowledged geniuses as well as the high IQ geniuses) have also been jerks, so it doesn't have to be an either/or kind of thing.

Oh. Yeah. I am quite a nice guy. Thank you for asking.

;->=

I'm a far, far outlier:

"kevin murphy" jerk = 652

"kevin murphy" genius = 16,600

but wait, there's more: the number one Google result for kevin murphy and jerk is: Patterico. And some people say there is such a thing as coincidence.

One needs to control for the number of times "jerk" and "genius" show up in google searches. The right ratio should be something like

((X genius)/(X jerk))/(genius/jerk)

By this formulation, Einstein gets a genius/jerk ratio (GJR) of around 2, while Gingrich's is around 0.4, which both sound about right. (Without the correction Gingrich would get a GJR > 1, which offends reason.)

Slow Down over at TruthOut claims to be mensa, but can't even string two sentences together. I wonder what his ration is....LOL

Well...Specter g/j is 353K/183K = 1.92. I guess not to good. But hey - "Specter the Best" came up with 6,550,000 hits. Wowsers. I guess it was a really slow day....

I win, you can't divide by zero.

Patterico, (AKA) Patrick Frey, Assistant Los Angeles District Attorney is a JERK? Mr Maguire, you're being WAY TOO KIND if you think Patterico is a JERK. Patrick Frey is a "LYING-DECEPTIVE-COWARDLY-ILLEGAL-SCUMBAG," and MORE. And I can Prove it.

Maybe he (Patrick Frey) would like to Legally debate me here on your website Mr Maguire, since he COWARDLY "BANNED" me from his website. Or is Mr Frey that much of a COWARD.

The OJ Simpson Case

go away Mario....They need you back on Uranus.

Talk about being mired in the past with no way out....

Spector,

Are you Legally afraid of me Also? No Matter. You may not like me, I COULD CARE LESS. Let's see if Patrick Frey (Patterico) has "ANY" courage at all.

I like it here on Mr Maguire's website. In The OJ Simpson Case, I Legally "Picked" up an Item from Sara (Squiggler) that I have known for Years, but never could really confirm it about OJ Simpson's side until I conversed with Sara.

I am like a Legal PIT-BULL.............and I FEAR NOTHING.............

Mario G. Nitrini 111

You are like a legal idyot...and you can't spell. LOL

Mario - what's your genius/jerk ratio?

Now, Now Spector, You can do better than that.

Hey, how about this? Since I cannot post on Patterico's website since he Cowardly "BANNED" me from it for telling the truth about L.A. Times Staff Writer Chuck Philips and The OJ Simpson Case, how about you posting on his website and asking him to come over here and Legally debate me here, on "JustOneMinute'?

It's get's old with Patrick Frey Hiding underneath the Skirts of Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley and the Pathetic LIAR and Coward Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney William Hodgeman (OJ Simpson Case).

How about it Spector? Do you have enogh courage yourself to ask Patrick Frey to come over here to "JustOneMintue" and Legally debate me?

Oh, and as far as my speeling goes, i am a VERY good Speller, just not a seasoned Typist.

Mario G. Nitrini 111

Sorry: Andrew Sullivan wins jerk of the week award (yes, I know it's only Monday, but you can't be jerkier than this):
"Selectively Excitable

"A reader captures what has been in my mind and gut for the last few days: 'The BBC just released a video alleging yet another covered-up massacre of civilians by American personel [sic] in Iraq. 5 women, 4 children, and 2 men in Ishaqi in March. Just when I think I'm totally numb, I find out a fellow American may have executed a 6 month-old baby in the name of protecting me, and I can't hold back tears. What country are we in?' The same country that now practices torture. Cheney country."--Time magazine's Andrew Sullivan, June 2, 2:55 p.m.

"Raw Story has now posted some photos of the corpses of children murdered in Ishaqi. Don't go there if you are squeamish, or believe that possible war crimes should not be covered by the media. Investigations continue, and exactly what happened has not been established. But the omens are grim. And these pictures of infants with bullet holes in their skulls simply defy my comprehension of what has happened to this country."--Time magazine's Andrew Sullivan, June 2, 3:49 p.m.

"The conclusions about Ishaqi also seem to me to be provisional. More evidence may yet emerge. We should be cautious about drawing any firm conclusions yet."--Time magazine's Andrew Sullivan, June 2, 7:54 p.m., responding to the news that an investigation has cleared U.S. troops of wrongdoing at Ishaqi " (Taranto)

Maybe the ratio only works for bloggers.

He is not afraid of you. He is showing you no interest at all. Thats much different. And more crushing to you very large and ever growing ego.

Clarice there it is again Raw Story and totally manufactured story. It happens so much that you have got to wonder if these lefties have all gone round the bend. Sullivan is just mad cuz he cnat marry his boyfriend but he has become unreadable never the less.

Spector?

I don't care what my genius/jerk ratio is, but you say I am "like a legal idyot..."

Really?

Let me give you a glimpse and others, and Patrick Frey of what is on the Legal Horizon for me.

I got an E-mail:

From: "Brad Gage"
To: "Mario Nitrini III"
CC: samorai@surfcity.net, "Steven Brock" , perry@scclaw.net.rob.frank
Subject: Re: Nomi Fredrick and something I forgot
Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2006 18:38:17 -0700

Spector, do you know who Brad Gage is? Let me tell you so you don't have to use your
BRIAN" too much. Brad Gage is one of The Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.'s) Family Attorney's. As you can read, I Hope, cc's are also sent to "Perry" and "Steven Brock."
I'll let you figure out who those two people are, or how about Patrick Frey helping you figure out who those two people are?

And Spector, this is "NOT" the only E-mail I have received from Brad Gage. One person Discussed in one of The E-mails is LAPD RHD Detective Ronald Y. Ito. Two People discussed in another E-mail is Los Angeles Times Staff Writer Chuck Philips and Suge Knight (Death Row Records). There's a lot more. Anthony Pellicano for instance.

Spector, do you know what some of this entails with The Unsolved Murders of Tupac and Biggie Smalls?
Certian people in The LAPD Illegally Covering-up.
Allegations about "The Crips" and "The Bloods."
LYING BOGUS Allegations by L.A. Times Staff Writer Chuck Philips that Suge Knight ordered "The Hit" on Biggie Smalls.
Each side in this Wallace family Federal Lawsuit claiming the other side is Hiding "THINGS."
I can go on and on.

I am headed for "NO MAN'S LAND." And Spector, you can be sure that I am going to Legally find out if Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney Patrick Frey has ever had any dealing's with Detective Ronald Y. Ito and Other people in The OJ Simpson Case, and/or dealing's with people connected to the Unsolved Murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.

Mario G. Nitrini 111

Sully has lost all credibility, and he will never get it back. Everyone I respect has washed their hands of him.

Gary Maxwell?

Are you addressing me?

'He is not afraid of you. He is showing you no interest at all. Thats much different. And more crushing to you very large and ever growing ego."

WELL?

Noi no no it was meant for another nitwit ( not you ). Pay no attention to it, no matter how much you resemble the remarks.

Mr. Maxwell,

Very Funny?

So YOU think I resemble a nitwit?

Look, Randy Andy Sullivan's moral perspective is irrefutable: Bush opposes gay marriage, therefore the troops routinely shoot babies in the head.

How can you deny the connection?

I think it looks that way, but I always suspect something grim in the background of people who get so emotional at every hint of sadism...just saying..

I need to Correct a mistake I made.

I said, "LYING BOGUS Allegations by L.A. Times Staff Writer Chuck Philips that Suge Knight ordered "The Hit" on Biggie Smalls."

Philips says, "So there was speculation, and there's still speculation as you know, and other theories that Suge Knight set this murder up. I don't believe that to be true at all and my sources said that that is not at all what happened." OH REALLY?

Here is the

LYING BOGUS Allegation made by L.A. Times Staff Writer Chuck Philips. He said that "Biggie Smalls ordered "THE HIT" on Tupac Shakur."

clarice ... er, does "WHEEEEE!" count as "so emotional?"

Just askin'.

No, I think more as ouch, ouch...

No Ned Beatty imitations, Richard. That would be.... well, honest, I guess.

Patterico's putz/pansy ratio is 0.9938.

Clarice there it is again Raw Story and totally manufactured story.

Yes Gary, I noticed that too.

That's what I i was saying all along; Einstein was a jerk!

Tom Maguire, that's genius! Very funny post.

a...nd as far as my speeling goes, i am a VERY good Speller, just not a seasoned Typist.

If I could make this stuff up I would quit my day job and write for Conan.

Mario's been running around doing this schtick at various blogs for a while now. He was attacking Patterico at Cathy Seipp's blog a couple weeks ago.

/shrug

What are the effects this comment thread has had on Andrew Sullivan and OJ Simpson's jerk to genius level? Comments are solicited.

Jerry jerk : Jerry genius = 1.6M : 5.26M

or 3.29, mighty fine stats.

I figured I'd contribute this as no one else would bothered to (well, maybe windandsea secretly).

BTW,
windandsea jerk : windandsea genius = 19:53

or 2.79....

sorry jerry...statistically speaking most J posters on JOM are jerks :)

I wanna know what you think of Raymond Chandler?

What's a LEGAL conversation? just curious.

Specter,

The opposite of an illegal conversation. ::grin::

brief intercourse, Specter.

The WSJ sees the Libby case as I do--tough Jeff:

quote]All of this matters because it suggests that Mr. Fitzgerald is scrambling even now to explain why a seasoned attorney such as Mr. Libby would lie to a grand jury. The prosecutor's original indictment doesn't mention a motive. And his mention of our editorial suggests he's now trying to invent a motive out of Mr. Libby's attempt to defend the White House from Mr. Wilson's manifestly false allegations at the onset of a Presidential election campaign. (Mr. Wilson joined the Kerry campaign until he was dropped after the official probes destroyed his credibility.)
There is all the difference in the world between seeking to respond to the substance of Mr. Wilson's charges, as Mr. Libby did, and taking revenge on him by blowing his wife's cover, which was the motive originally hypothesized by Bush critics for the Plame exposure. The more of Mr. Fitzgerald's case that becomes public, the more it looks like he has made the terrible mistake for a prosecutor of taking Joe Wilson's side in what was essentially a political fight.
