boris

Really the assumption behind "political ploy to alienate voter blocks" is IMO silly.

JM Hanes

You know, I'd have found it hard to believe that folks could make wearing a flag pin sound downright unappealing, but if you guys keep it up you might just put me off the idea completely.

Enlightened

Really Boris? I beg to differ. Not only are those using his Middle name against his wishes attempting to associate him with Islam, they are saying it with a derogatory, sarcastic inflection. The meaning and intent are blatantly clear.

If you have no problem saying it, why do you care what others think? For some reason you are trying to justiy your usage of it to someone who couldn't care less, but who can see it for what it is.

boris

who can see it for what it is

Since I am not doing any of those things I question your ablilty to "see it for what it is".

JM Hanes

AM:

That was "Hussein" as the symbol thing in my last to you, not the flag. Lordy! I'm just getting all these litmus test/not litmus test symbols/not symbols serious/silly things all mixed up.

hit and run

JMH:
As long as you don't accuse hit&run of drinking warm beer -- even though I'd be willing to bet the farm he has -- you'll probably be OK.

If the accusation is "having drank warm beer", I admit.

But "drinking warm beer" connotes a current and ongoing action that I most adamantly deny.

And denounce.

And reject.

And reserve for future occasion should it be necessary.

Enlightened

Boris - Everyone can see what and why you are using his middle name. If you can't that is pretty much your problem.

JM Hanes

And may you have a long, long run of cold beers, hit, between now and then! Or cold beers now and cold beers then. in both its past and future sense, or nonsense.

boris

If you can't that is pretty much your problem

Pretty sure I know why I used it. Pretty sure you don't. But let's see if I can read your mind here ...

Hmmmm .... we should focus on Obama's intention to turn Iraq over to Al Qaeda and avoid mentioning that his middle name is "Hussein" because it appears mean.

Appears hell! I am mean!

Rick Ballard

Boris,

It appears that you don't have the zero tolerance tolerance rules down as well as BHO would hope. How many months in an ANWAR Protection Battalion would you estmate will be necessary in order for you to fully appreciate the subtle nuance involved?

hit and run

Thank you, JMH, that's the sweetest thing anyone's said to me all day.

boris

How many months in an ANWAR Protection Battalion would you estmate will be necessary ...

Gee, isn't there some lapel pin or ribbon I could just wear in public instead?

PeterUK

Boris,
Your "I Love Barack ******* Obama" badge is in the post.

boris

I have never been so proud!

Rick Ballard

Gee, isn't there some lapel pin or ribbon I could just wear in public instead?"

No.

Zero-tolerance tolerance rules absolutley mandate a "permanent manifestation" of change of heart. Tattoos, brands, ear notches (with short hair) and tongue clips are acceptable.

Removable symbols cannot be tolerated as evidence of permanent acceptance of tolerance standards.

boris

Huh.

Well I already have the short hair (as in frog hair short) and an ear notch.

PeterUK

"Zero-tolerance tolerance rules absolutley mandate a "permanent manifestation" of change of heart. Tattoos, brands, ear notches (with short hair) and tongue clips are acceptable."

Ok Boris report for tattooing,
Barack on one hand Obama on the other, where you put the Hussein is your business.

clarice

PUK--You must have spent grade school on permanent detention. (Don't ask me how I know.)

Syl

Perhaps we should all avoid using the Bin between Osama and Laden to demonstrate our sensitivity to oppression and intolerance.

Or, to make it completely fair perhaps:

Barrack Hussein bin Obama.

::ducking::

Jane

Glenn has another link to a CHI Trib article on the Rezko trial (link under my name). I can no longer recall where we were discussing it.

PeterUK

Clarice,
Grammar School, towards the end I wasn't there often enough for detention.

clarice

Ditto,PUK..I regard my refusal to attend much of 10th grade as the one thing that kept me from having my brains totally sucked out .It was a matter of self-preservation.

Pofarmer

I wanna make sure that I've got Appalled's position.

We aren't to use Barak Hussein Obama's name.
We aren't to discuss how Barak Hussein Obama sounds.
We aren't to discuss what Barak Hussein Obama says.
We aren't to discuss what Barak Hussein Obama's positions are.
We aren't to discuss Barak Hussein Obama's political ties.
We aren't to discuss Barak Hussein Obama's shady dealings in Chicago.
We aren't to discuss Barak Hussein Obama's upbringing.
We aren't to discuss Barak Hussein Obama's use of symbolism.

Have I covered all the bases yet?

clarice

Actually--it was 9th grade--the last year of what was then part of a now abandoned experiment ccalled "junior high"--a division so disastrous only the worst teachers or those who significant impairment were willing to be caught dead there. The idea behind it was apparently to isolate children going thru the most insane part of their development on a single campus, stick them with crazy teachers and instead of any meaningful class work, use those three years to review everything they'd learned in the the first 8 years.

clarice

**those wITH significant impairment**

vnjagvet

I think using the initials BHO is far better than using just BO (which, when I was a kid prompted giggles).

Just sayin'.

Apparently no one told his parents about hidden problems with name initials. Of course, maybe his parents never thought he would drop the part of his name beginning with H.

sbw

Some of my sport coats have flag pins on them... and have since 1991 when, as a member of our community Griffiss Military Affairs Committee we saw many of our locally-stationed Air Force (509th Refueling and 416th Bomb Wing) members serve in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

It was at a 1991 Dining Out that I first heard Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The U.S.A." during a slide show in tribute to those then stationed abroad. I proudly stood up. I still get goose bumps whenever I hear that song, and recall the friends who were called to serve.

I'm wiser now than I was in the 1960s when I put my faith in the United Nations. And wiser than I was even in 1991. Now understand what is worth standing up for, and why.

You remember how, when you point at something, dogs look at the end of your finger instead of the object you are pointing at. That's how I feel about flag pins. Some people see the pin, and not what it points at.

Syl

I think using the initials BHO is far better than using just BO (which, when I was a kid prompted giggles).

Tell me about it. :( My initials are SML which I always said meant Small, Medium, Large. but the kids all called me smelly anyway.

Rick Ballard

Vnjagvet,

That's B*O now, just as it has always been. Pofarmer just earned himself some time in the ANWAR Protection Battalion. Zero-tolerance tolerance is no laughing matter and groupthink violations will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

IOW - doubleplusungoodsquared.

I'm shooting for a unified diversity administrator position in the new regime order and I'll be watching.

narciso

Look Cunningham's a fool, a one time? Ron Paul supporter who's a'johnny one note' on
illegal immigration and doesn't distinguish between Wahhabi/Salafist currents and the
wider Islamic community; Tom Tancredo as
a talk show host.

Having gotten that out of the way, "Barry Latham"s (is that neutral enough?)record in the Illinois legislature; voting present how many times, to obfuscate his position,
his dealings with would be American Montoneros like Bernadine Dorn & William Ayers, Arab nationalist Rashid Khalidi, et al; must be explored so as to flesh out his likely policy orientations. The fact that his stated policy of retreat from Iraq would encourage jihadists to move their efforts to Saudi Arabia (a scenario predicted by this fall's "The Kingdom") and the Emirates; the consequences of such a move need to be made clear. McCain due to his overidentification of his former plight
with Gitmo and Bagram elements, is probably not the best person to make this argument.
One despairs, however, In a world where
CAIR's 'Gitmo correspondent' McClatchy's Carol Rosenberg is busy pointing out how Hollywood endorses the liberation of Zubeydah and KSM and cheers when an historical vacous mouthpiece like Marguilies
is finally able to see his client, and reports back that the "Great Abu" was not a subordinate, but a rival that was opposed to the former's targeting of civilians. Ironic, that he was detained while planning
to blow up a school in Pakistan.

Ann

What is wrong with the Republican Party this year? They can't even defeat cold bloodied Murtha.

Murtha's Republican opponent tossed off ballot

Patrick Tyson

My initials are PAT and my best friend's back in grade school were RAY. It could have been Otis (BOO) — To Kill A Mockingbird or Tiger (BTO) — Takin' Care of Business, but, no, they liked Hussein. Poor kid. So much promise brought to nothing by such an unfortunate middle name choice.

vnjagvet

I won't use BHO's full name in the interests of assuring my acceptance among the our groupspeaking friends in the audience.

But as to the initials, that's my explanation and I'm sticking to it.

centralcal

I think that familiarity doesn't always breed contempt. Sometimes it just breeds - well - familiarity.

The more one uses Barack Hussein Obama, the more familiar it becomes - hence, less a big deal.

Instead, we will NOT use it and it becomes a thing of sinister mystery. Go figure.

Sue

I would imagine Hillary is pulling her hair out. With all of the issues that could have been talked about the last 2 days, what has the media, and blogs, been hung up on? Hussein. It inoculates him in the general over this issue. It keeps the focus on him and off Hillary. Win/win for Obama.

Sue

I know I said my conspiracy theories are lame, but dagnabbit, if they weren't so lame, they would be good.

vnjagvet

What if he wins? Will he be BHO (like FDR, JFK, LBJ)? Or Baracky (like Harry, Jimmy)? Or Barack H. Obama (like George H. W. Bush)?
H (like W)?

There is nothing in his background like Ike, is there?

sammy small

I would suggest that BHO still conjurs up thoughts of his middle name. Why not have The Artist Formerly Known As Prince invent a new symbol for him to go by in all the print media. His verbal description would be Politician Otherwise Known As Barack Obama - POKABO

bgates

I feel that using Hussein repeatedly is serving to inflame rather than inform.

What are your thoughts on 'Red Witch'?

Rick Ballard

"still conjurs up thoughts of his middle name"

Sammy,

No it doesn't. I don't believe that you're trying very hard in this groupthink exercise - and it's B*O. No more unthoughts, OK? If this keeps up the budget for the ANWAR Protection Battalions is going to completely offset the accross the board planned reductions in military hardware programs. Let's all just exercise some self restraint as we march forward into our brave new diversely unified future.

Ann

Vnjagvet,

What if McCain wins? Will he be JSM? John McCain's middle name is Sidney. His full name is John Sidney McCain III. Guess what appears when you google JSM:

Jimmy Swaggart Ministries
JSM is called to God to do the following.....
or
Journal of Sexual Medicine

OK, I am being silly, but wait, I googled my initials and guess what google listed? KAM

I dare everyone to google their initials. Tell me if you can beat mine!!! LOL

bgates

All his Harvard classmates seem to remember him as "Barry", and the family who raised his was named "Dunham". Let's see how that would look in news coverage:

CHICAGO-
Federal Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald announced his office has reached a plea deal with real estate developer Tony Rezko on fraud and money laundering charges. Mr Rezko will serve 18 years instead of a potential 21, in exchange for testimony against 3-term State Senator Barry Dunham, who Mr Rezko allegedly assisted in the purchase of a studio apartment in Evanston in return for political favors.

Rick Ballard

Wasn't Dunham one of those Christian Coalition clones? Falwell and Dobson were both big supporters, weren't they? You can always tell with those damn religious hypocrites.

vnjagvet

Or, Sammy, Politician Infamously Campaigning As Barack Obama, PICABO -- not to be confused with Street.

vnjagvet

I can't beat it Ann. And congratulations.

Sue

Ann,

I could be boring and just use my current initials. http://collegeboard.com/>SAT. But instead, I threw in my maiden name and I think I beat you. http://www.sexhelp.com/sast.cfm>SAST

Ann

I think this whole problem could be solved, if someone would ask Obama: Why are you embarrassed by your middle name? Why did you thank John McCain today?

I am with Boris,
Hmmmm .... we should focus on Obama's intention to turn Iraq over to Al Qaeda and avoid mentioning that his middle name is "Hussein" because it appears mean.

Appears hell! I am mean!

clarice

Barak is every bit as Arabic a name as Hussein. It means Blessing. So using his middle name no more emphasizes his Moslem ancestry than using his first name. Is it forbidden to refer to his middle name because it is like Saddam's?

ben

Frankly if Obama wasn't for sitting down with terrorists, handing Iraq over to Al Qaeda, scrapping defense systems and the Patriot Act, etc nobody would care even if his name was Osama Hussein Al Zarqawi. It's just an unfortunate coincidence that he has such political views and such middle name.

Pofarmer

Better yet, why did John McCain Grovel over what somebody else said today?

clarice

Po--I think he was being very deft in doing that.

Rick Ballard

Clarice,

I don't think that **O is gonna work. Maybe we should just call him Barry Dunham - in the name of unified diversity? If only his middle name were Frederick, it would be perfect.

ben

http://www.hedgehogreport.com
Not to change the subject, but was just looking at two polls at the top of that blog, showing Obama really getting slaughtered by McCain in NC and TN in the general election...those are the kind of numbers that would give McCain the opportunity to invest everything in battleground states and blue states and have a nice 180 electoral vote base to start with.

JM Hanes

Jeez. Who let the dogs in?

Topsecretk9

--Jeez. Who let the dogs in?--

Me! Me!

Jane

Maybe we should just call him Barry Dunham - in the name of unified diversity?

I'm more worried about having to change my middle name to Husssein - in the name of unified diversity.

PeterUK

I don't think Obama's middle name is significant any more than if it had been Adolf or Josef sixty five years ago.Unfortunate for a politician ,but hardly significant.

kim

Barack sounds almost biblical, you know, Barack, Meshach, and Abednego, but Hussein sounds like the anti-Persian hero that lying Bush should have left in charge over there.

Remember how upset the other side was with the picture of the president looking out the window of Air Force One and later the flight suit aircraft carrier photo?

And of course there is the eternal refrain "Bush Lied People Died!".

Symbolism is their black magic, their voodoo and they become extremely upset if our side winds up with any, intentional or not. It must be neutralized and eliminated and apologized for right now.

Barak's middle name is both irony and rhyme and that's why it's a big deal for some.

Barry the Blessed is gonna get you Boris. Anyone who refuses to unthink properly is just asking for unperson status.

Perhaps you could try a little doublethink first? A trite tautology or a touch of solipsism?

Remember - Barry the Blessed just wants you to be happy and he knows that you can't be happy until you commit yourself to embracing unified diversity and complete tolerance. Think of him as having zero-tolerance for your unhappiness and everything will become clear.

From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23338127/>MSNBC's military analyst:

Although problems do occur in combat situations to be sure, none of what Obama related makes any sense and is, according to people with whom I spoke, untrue. Units the size of platoons are not sent to separate theaters, ammunition has been plentiful, and an investigation indicates that the unit in question was missing only one of its Humvees, all to no peril of the unit.

regarding Obama's story from the last debate.

anduril

I didn't see Rick Moran's amusing but also long and informative What You Didn't Know About Barack Obama and Tony Rezko linked above, so here it is.

The conclusion:

The significance of this relationship is that it proves that Barack Obama is not who he claims to be – a new kind of politician who will lead us all to the Promised Land. Obama can lie like any normal politician. He can do favors for his supporters who give him money. He can do business with scam artists like Rezko whose illegal activities authorities are still trying to unravel.

Given what we know already, there doesn’t seem to be a “bottom” to this story yet. And what we find when we get there may yet prove to be Barack Obama’s undoing as a candidate for President of the United States.

Neo
U. S. Senator Barack Obama is a citizen of Kenya and became a citizen of Kenya under the Independence Constitution of Kenya in 1963. Obama has never renounced his Kenyan citizenship. He is also a U. S. Citizen.

Moran's piece needs to be run through a distillery a few times. Rezco's rental of Barry the Blessed is obvious but it requires a little too much thought to understand the greasy nature of the deals. It's like Whitewater and the BCCI corruption in that respect. Bubba, RW and Mr. Peanut were all deeply involved in cheap hustles but the hustles lacked the clarity of, say, Cold Cash on video accepting a bribe.

And DoJ still can't get Cold Cash in a courtroom.

What would Blag trade Fitz for in order to get short time? An improperly vetted (hi, RW!) Presidential candidate?

The Art of the Deal. Nobody ever said the guy was stoopid.

GMax

Well that could have a few legs in the Jewish community. Especially since Ralph Nader has been pounding Obama recently for hiding his previous pro Palestinian leanings.

ben

It's nice some people are doing their homework on Obama, as well they should, and put some dents in this holier than thou, fresh as as a daisy, pure as the driven snow, etc. etc. image that is being sold in the package. But to me the 800lb gorilla is the absolute lack of qualification this guy has to seek the Presidency. Fred Barnes has an article today saying the lack of qualification strategy won't work for McCain because it hasn't worked for Hillary. But I am not so sure, Hillary and Obama are running for the Democratic nomination, the general election has different (and hopefully higher) standards.

glasater

The fear I have regarding BHO is that the current voting public is viewing this democratic primary battle as one of the latter episodes from the "West Wing". It's become sport or a disconnect from reality.

As far as the Palestinian situation is concerned is "the dirty secret" in that the Arab world has viewed Palestinians with what could best be called disdain. But Arabs have used this conflict to flog their own agenda.

Jane

I think Obama is faltering a bit, at least with people not caught up in the whole Messiah thing.

cathyf
The Art of the Deal. Nobody ever said the guy was stoopid.
Well, I did. (And do.) Looking at the original siting of the house, and the original lot divisions, by separating out the corner lot they made possible a building on the corner lot that would cut the value of their property by way more than the $625K that they "saved". Look, Chicago zoning has no rules at all besides clout. With the original 75-foot-wide corner lot not included in some hypothetical future sale, a clout-less potential buyer of the Obama's house would be facing the prospect that a clout-full developer could build all the way to the lot line. Since the house was mere inches from that line, depending upon the layout of the new building's windows and/or balconeys, the people inside the new building(s) could climb in the 2nd and 3rd story windows of the house!

Even after the Obamas bought the 10-foot-wide strip -- it only moved the lot line 10 feet further away from the south side of the house. The only way (in Chicago) that the owner of the 5046 S Greenwood house can prevent a developer from blocking all of the light coming in the south-facing windows is by having more clout than the developer. Fine, as long as the Obamas own it they have the clout, but the only buyers who will pay the price for having light coming in the south facing windows are buyers with as much clout as the Obamas -- a pretty darn small market! So by allowing the side-yard lot to "get away" the Obamas slashed the market value of the house that they bought.

This is a typically wheeler-dealer stoopid mistake. To get so caught up in the pursuit of the "angle", the "taking something for free", that the wheeler-dealer misses that what he gave up to get his "freebie" that he "took" with his clout was actually worth more than the "freebie". And we're just talking about the market value of the real estate here -- not even touching the question of whether "making the deal" costs him the presidency.

I think Obama is faltering a bit, at least with people not caught up in the whole Messiah thing.

Not around here. People seem fired up. Early voting is off the charts.

Interesting discussion regarding the middle name thought crime. ISTM that people who are going to be offended by such aren't likely to support Obama in any event. Its interesting that it parallels one of the Halperin suggestions - let your surrogates toss the dirt so you can pretend to be "Shocked, Shocked!"

Flag pins?

Please.

MayBee

So by allowing the side-yard lot to "get away" the Obamas slashed the market value of the house that they bought.

But wouldn't we assume that the Obamas knew they had permanent influence on what happened with the second lot because the Rezkos owned it?
If they were to sell it- hypothetically, if he weren't a Pres. candidate, etc- don't we just assume he would be able to rejoin the two lots and sell them together if their market value was affected?

Does anyone know, or can anyone tell, if the owners originally put the two lots on the market separately or if that option came up after it was perhaps offered to them?

TexasToast

..... swayed by such .....

Jane

People seem fired up.

That's pre-primary. I'm talking post primary, when people try to figure out what it is they bought. McCain will probably turn out to be the perfect anti-Obama. Independents like him and don't fear him. (OT was right) Obama gets lighter-weight by the minute.

I actually expect the Messaiah's numbers to rise and fall many times between now and December. A lot depends on what the media makes up and what it refuses to report.

I'm glad I'm not on that side. It feels dirty.

clarice

I consider my mom a bellwether for the older Jewish Dem voter. She's not voting for either Dem candidate. Not. And that's before the Khalidi stuff came out.
And she says she thinks the NYT' hit on McCain was unfair.

She's in loony Wexler's district.

anduril

I was looking at the deal from angle of whether he's likely to be indicted--the usual standard for such deals. Whether it was smart from a R/E or a political standpoint is quite another matter and I'm not qualified to comment on the R/E aspects.

I suspect the Obamas, when they did this deal, were viewing the WH as waaaay down the road. Or, even more simply, Michelle wanted some nice digs in Kenwood right now. That was maybe shortsighted, but from what we can see so far is unlikely to land them in jail. My guess is that the MSM will "balance" this scandal with McCain scandals--real or invented--and the net effect may be a wash. I'll gladly say right now that their political ideas are stoopid.

Jane

I don't think there is chance on this planet that they will end up in jail. Not with this media. I think it will be a miracle if any network or major newspaper puts it on page 58 below the fold.

clarice

Indicted is the test? Hmm. I doubt he'll be indicted. I think this was just a little something Michelle dreamed of to get that house right now..and they had little cash at the moment.

Of course none of his opponents raised this because well they didn't have clean togas either.

It might be time, however, to take a look at how credible is Obama's promise to unite us across the partisan divide. S & L shows why that's not credible at all.

Patterico has a Josh Marshall hit piece - the new VRWC - to paraphrase:

The GOP will play and is already playing the Race Card. McCain used the reverse Race Card. He denounced the RC users and in so doing betrayed his secret Racist playbook. It's a Rovian plot - again. Anyone that speaks negatively about TMess is a Racist.

Anyone that is against BO - racist. Anyone that rebuts him - racist. If he loses - all because of racists. He made a shitty RE deal - racism. His past is questionable - racist. His church is questionable - racist.

It's as simple as that - we are all racists right now, as we speak because we do not support BO The Black Candidate.

So does that mean we are carte blanche racists? Can we just pile on the Race Card and spew anything we want to because - we already are Racists That Don't Believe And Won't Vote For A Black Man?

This is hilarious. The pretzel logic they use to avoid reality is simply priceless.

I'm not voting for BO because he's an idiot. An idiot that just happens to be darker skinned than the even bigger idiot Josh Marshall. So I guess I am racist towards idiots too.

So I guess I'm just Racist. There. Said it.

anduril

As I said, my guess is that the Rezko deal will end up being a wash--"balanced" by McCain scandals, real or manufactured. That means that, for lack of much of a track record on Obama, the real issue will be: who the hell is this guy? And on that score it seems there are some interesting things coming out: consorting with ex-bombers, and so forth. It could turn out that Obama's weaknesses could end up playing to McCain's strengths, creating a kind of...synergy!

Another interesting aspect that's starting to get some media play is McCain's overall very good rapport with the campaign press, compared to the extremely buttoned down Obama campaign.

anduril

Addendum: the poor press relations and identity issues could combine to keep the Rezko issue a bit more front and center than would ordinarily be the case. I still see that as a distant hope, though.

Alan

If Obama's gift house depended on zoning, does that make Obama a zoner? because I oppose zoning and will definately vote against any zoner!!!
