Hugh Hewitt this morning:

During my vacation I read Barack Obama's books. and Dreams From My Father: A Story Of Race And Inheritance was a revelation. The Audacity of Hope is dull, the sort of book we expect from presidential candidates.

But Dreams is pretty raw, and very revealing. Every political commentator should read it. I'll be posting on it for the next few days, but it showcases the source of Obama's appeal: Senator Obama walked the civil rights' activist and community organizer's walk. He knows the underclass. He tried, in a very real, very committed way, to improve their lot.

He believes.

Barack Obama is a man of the left --the hard left ,the uncompromising left. His passion is real, not feigned, and the intensity of his campaign volunteers is to be expected as a result.

But he is far, far from the mainstream of American politics, and as the electorate learns this, I expect they will become exceedingly cautious about handing the country's future to a man only three years into the D.C. swirl --exactly the same time he spent as an "organizer" on the South Side of Chicago. He didn't "know" Chicago after three years, and he doesn't know D.C. --or the world-- now.

Senator Barack is, in short, a rookie. The sort of rookie the fans love, then turn against, realizing he isn't up to the job. The sort of rookie that makes huge mistakes, which while merely disappointing on the football field, are deadly on the field of international conflict.

Senator Obama is Jimmy Carter, without the experience. Carter, without the United States Naval Academy education.

He's going to win Texas and Ohio on Tuesday, and lose to John McCain in November.

We are a people defined by common sense, after all. We don't turn the county's survival over to rookies.

Happy Texas Independence Day:

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is revered as the site of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Washington remained a town of some prominence in early Texas until the eve of the Civil War. The park encompasses the site of the historic town (1836). Washington was the first county seat of Washington County in 1836, the capitol of Texas from 1842 to 1845, and the home of the last president of the Republic of Texas, Anson Jones. Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, the seat of Texas Independence, is the center each year for the Texas Independence Day Celebration, under the direction of the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association.

One thought I just had is that Hillary seemed to have spent a lifetime attached to the hip to Bill, no matter what he put her through, in the hopes that staying with him and being associated with him would launch her to the top politically and help her achieve her ultimate goal of the Presidency.

However, it seems now that that many people won't vote for her precisely because she is so strongly associated with Bill, and they don't want more of the same old thing and are more attracted to new blood and "change". So a lifetime of putting up with Bill's antics for nothing and the thing she thought would help her the most ended up in reality hurting her the most. Ironic isn't it?

kim

Yes, sylvia, that is a resonant irony. I might even work up sympathy for her about it.

Happy Birthday, Jane.

Thinking of Boston, I surely hope that the Globe bills the Obama campaign for their whole issue today. It contains the most blatant reporting in support of the Obama candidacy I have seen yet. Michelle walks on water, the youth are coming out to vote because of Obama, Obama rides wave into Texas, we need the government to give us the nudge to sign up for all the right choices on the job and in our daily lives since we can't do it for ourselves and this is a key element in the Obama platform, black America is afraid to hope for an Obama victory but they stand a good chance of getting one. The cheerleading just goes on and on and on. The even inject it into the concept of soccer moms being so 1990's boom time and that now the moms need to get out there and work for higher taxes so we can make the government do more for us. It is all for the children, you know. Really sick-making.

The worst to me was the article about how Cass Suntein and his buddy Richard Thales telling us that we are not making all the right decisions. We need to have the government and our employers force us to sign up for this health plan or that 401K plan or the other choices that the government is to make for us. We are not to have the default choice of opting out. We have to consciously opt out or else and even if we do we should get opted in anyway. I remember when I was still working that I had to write the programs that created a cafeteria plan of benefits so that the employees had all the choices laid out and they could pick and choose all the ones they wanted. The basis was that it was a blank sheet and you could do it the way you personally wanted to and the company gave you x amount of dollars to work with. Once you exhausted the dollars furnished you paid the balance but the base was totally up to you. Now we have these two academics from the University of Chicago and Harvard telling us that we didn't pick the right things and that the choices have to be taken out of our hands and they have a presidential candidate who supports them and his name is Obama. No thank you. I would rather do it myself.

On another note, has any one ever done a cost-benefit analysis of Congress?

It's probably pretty high. Imagine what could be done to us in Washington without Congress's interference.

Ranger

Well, it looks like Hill is going for a Superdelegate Nulification at the convention. Today one of her people challenged Obama to release everything on Rezko for public review, including the home buying stuff. My guess is that she stays in until the convention then argues that Obama concealed all this from the voters, and it is up to the Superdelegates to correct that. Should be a fun 7 months til the convention!

Ranger

The Happiest of Birthdays, Jane, and many happy returns.

A fella goes skiing for a week, it's tough to catch up on everything...but it was steep and deep at Mammoth Mountain.

Looking rapid-fire at all my tivo'd taling-heads programs, I noticed that someone on one of them speculated that Hillary's strategy at this point is to hang on and stretch the process out as long as possible, in the hope that in the coming months the Dem electorate (and super-delegates) are going to get a serious case of nerves over the Obama candidacy. If so, that's wonderful news, because it means we'll be treated to many weeks of extremely severe criticism of her from the media and the hard left.

glasater

Happy Birthday Jane--to an essential element of JOM.

Charlie Rose had a reprise of interviews he had done of WF Buckley through the years and one stood out from 1993--think that was the timeframe.
Charlie asked Bill if there were anyone on the scene today (1993) that resembled Buckley and represented his (Buckley's) influence.
Buckley said "no" but that he felt if there ever were such a person to come along--it would most likely be a young, exspressive socialist.
I immediately thought of Obama in today's context.

Philly isn't that bad, either.

On MTP this morning, Carville, the only overt RW supporter, conceded Bill was probably right when he said this week in Texas that RW had to win both Texas and Ohio to stay in.

For me, though, the longer she hangs on the better for McCain and the good guys.

She can develop anti-Obama themes that will live on in the general election.

Hey all.

I'm doing some research into the history of the Patriot Act. Can anyone provide a good round-up of which measures of the PA were already on the books before 9-11? I was given to understand that many of the law enforcement tools for fighting terrorists were previously employed by authorities to go after organized crime and drug cartels.

Thanks in advance.

Good to see the Clintons aren't taking Jane's advice. Here's #9:

>The first question to ask Wilson is,"What exactly was the purpose of your business trip to Niger,do you currently have interests there now?"

Actually I'd take the long route:

Mr. Wilson. How many times have you been to Niger? What was the date of the first time? What was your reason for being there? Who did you meet there?

What is his address, phone number. How many times did you meet him. What did you talk about. Did any business come about as a result of that meeting? What kind of business? Who else was involved? What are there addresses and phone numbers? Did you make any money from the transaction? How much? Where was that money deposited? What was the date of the first meeting? The second? How long did the first meeting take place? Where did it take place? Who else was involved.

How many times have you met with so & so? What are the dates? Who else was present? What did you talk about?

Who else did you meet with on your first trip to Niger?

And on and on and on? You get the drift.

I've not hidden my utter affection for the Iraqi Minister of Disinformation. And as if by request, some smart group of kids have memorialized his prose for all time.

Just a few of the all time greats:

"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"

"My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all"

"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"

"I blame Al-Jazeera - they are marketing for the Americans!"

"God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of Iraqis."

'We have destroyed 2 tanks, fighter planes, 2 helicopters and their shovels - We have driven them back."

"surrender or be burned in their tanks."

"No I am not scared and neither should you be!"

"We have them surrounded in their tanks"

I think they even have a card for him - the joker, by unanimous proclamation!

I have come to believe, after watching "Obsession" this weekend, that peace never has been and never will be an option. For the jihadists this is an eternal fight to the death. Either they are destroyed or we will be. There is no common ground, and never will be. And there are no options but to win.

It is going to take a great effort to get most Americans to understand this. And we could lose our country in the process.

Another debate

I'm getting a little bored with the democrat debates. Week after week the sparring takes the same form:

Moderator: "You have been critical of the President's actions in Iraq. What would you do diferently?"

Democrat candidate: "George Bush is a horrible horrible man. He has failed to win the war. He has failed to win the peace. I will do it better!"

Moderator: What exactly will you do differently.

Candidate: "I would have gotten our friends to like us more. I would be nicer to them. George Bush is evil. I am not."

Moderator: "What exactly would you do differently if you were president today?"

Candidate: "George Bush is horrible!"

Where oh where is the beef?

It certainly is legitimate to criticize George Bush for not having a plan. But is it legitimate to criticize him for not having a plan if you don't have a plan? I think not.

Kucinich has a plan. I give him kudos for that. His plan is crazy but at least he has one. The rest of them are just clueless. Should one of them make it into the whitehouse next term the first thing they should do is break down and cry.

Most Revered Mr. Steyn,

I'm taking a longshot here.

Over at Tom Maguire's JustOneMinute blog, we are planning a special Happy Birthday message for one of our most beloved commenters, Jane.

In it, we are going to put in the names of all the well-wishers in the "Posted by:" field of a single comment.

The longshot request is if you would give your permission to have your name included.

The reason I am asking is that there is a long-running inside joke about you on the blog. Several of the female commenters show their affection for various persons by staking claim to being willing to mud-wrestle for them.

You are on the top of the list.

See here and here

We won't put your name in the B-Day greeting unless you respond -- and if you do -- I would then likely quote any response I get here there to show that I didn't just make it up.

What do you say? Are you in?

Pretty please...it would make a grown woman so very very happy.

You do like making women happy, don't you?
Well?

Cheers,

Zarqawi died of "space blast" injuries.

According the press conference taking place right now, when a bomb hits an enclosed area, the power from the blast causes the lungs to lose function. The damage is enhanced or decreased based on where the victim is located in the room, and whether they are facing toward or away from the bomb.

For the moonbats: There were no injuries consistent with beatings.
