Karl

...and he's visiting her and the kid at some hotel. Why?

bgates

K, the Dem politician has admitted the affair; checking the playbook, that means we move on to jokes about how the woman is fat, and her friend is fat and ugly. Who's Linda Tripp in this story?

bgates

Speaking of "move on", will a long-lived political force be born of come out of result from all this? I'd like to start something to express my feelings about the media's "coverage" - how does "ComeOn.org" grab everybody?

Thomas Collins

The motivation is to save his political career. He is hoping that this admission will give MSM enough cover not to pursue this further, and that, over time, this will not prevent him from resuming his political career (perhaps he is hoping that this will recede from memory soon enough that he will get the AG slot in a Big Zero administration (how fitting, by the way, that Barack's symbol is now a Big Zero)).

If Edwards were a GOPer, I would say this story wouldn't work, and that MSM would now be pursuing diligently why he met Lady Rielle at 2 am in a hotel room if the fling was over and the child wasn't his. But Edwards is a donkey, so perhaps this will recede.

By the way, my view on politicians stepping out is that they should be discreet about it, and if they get caught, it is a sign that they lack that amount of discretion necessary to be a leader. Feel free to lambaste me for promoting hypocrisy. I would suggest that in any polity, hypocrisy is an essential element. Letting it all hang out was fine for over-privileged baby boomers who could rely on grandma's and grandpa's generation skipping trusts, but it is no formula for an ongoing polity.

glenda waggoner

Exactly, If the affair ended before conception- he checks into hotels for a few hours in the dead of night to???... check up on an old friend? research Obama commercials? arrange a surprise for his wife? oh, wait-getting special medical information to treat his wife's recurrent
cancer? buy presents for HIS kids on his laptop while referring with woman he had previous long-time affair with? Oh, wait, I
know---he's babysitting for a friend.
Hit- help me out on this one, please. Outdo
your new Exxon credit card! :)

BumperStickerist

I don't know who's going to be more insufferable, Mickey Kaus or his editor [ed: me!]

Don

So was Ann Coulter right to call him a "faggot"?

Sara

There is more sex going on in campaigns and in Washington, in general, than in a Nevada brothel. When I worked for a Member of Congress, we were helping a young politician get his start in another District, until we found out that he was "screwing" every young woman who crossed his path. He was very generous, though, leaving each of his conquests with the gift of herpes. My boss gave him an ultimatum, get out of the race, or she would go public and encourage the young women to sue for lifetime medical payments.

centralcal

Edwards has to be careful here. He may not be fully aware of everything the NE has and they have been twisting the knife slowly. Also, he doesn't wanna get Rielle too rielled up where she comes forward with a different story.

BobS

Sorry to change the subject, but I need the leagl minds here to comment on the Accountable America letter to republican donars. That seems to me to be illegal on several fronts. Is it?

Enlightened

"So was Ann Coulter right to call him a "faggot"?"

Of course she was - faggot was a contemptuous term for a child or woman (and Edwards is certainly both) - it's only in recent history that the word was modified into an epithet towards gay men. And gay men are just as apt to have promiscuous, unprotected sex outside their committed relationships as apparently John Edwards has.

Lesley

Karl asks: "...and he's visiting her and the kid at some hotel. Why?"

Little babies are irresistable, doncha know.

Porchlight - yes, that was the article which called it "the little red church on the hill." btw my daughter graduated from your enemy across the river, UM YA YA ::Sue Grin::

Big hello to Mary Rose.

Sara

BobS: DOT left this comment in the previous thread re: Donor intimidation:

Looks to me like Mr. Mattzie's group could lose its non-profit status in one hell of a hurry. If that article is accurate, I would think those guys are headed for trouble.
Danube of Thought

BobS, I don't know because I haven't seen the letter. Someone said it was up on Malkin's blog but I went there and couldn't find the text of the letter.

Concerning Edwards, I have always reserved an especially malignant corner of my heart for that oleaginous, swishy scumbag. I exult in his public disgrace, and look forward to seeing it continue unabated.

Enlightened

Folks - his math is wrong and he deliberately obfuscated the end of the relationship and the conception of the child.

He admitted he bagged Rielle whilst his wife was in remission. She only went into remission in June 2006. His love child was concieved in late May or early June based on the DOB of 2/27/07.

Another lie. I pity Elizabeth Edwards. When she needed her husband most, he was pulling a BillyJeff on her and now that she is in a fight for her life, she gets this, and the sad thought that after she's gone, she knows that her husband is all set.

I hope his career is over. And I wish Elizabeth had the strength to toss him on his ass.

Enlightened

Ok - I got the dates wrong - the baby was born this year!

Sorry about that. Baby was concieved in 2007 May/June - a couple of months after Elizabeth was rediagnosed.

Well, I guess he will have to take the paternity test now won't he?

soccer dad

Snapped Shot raises good questions about the Enquirer's pictures.

BobS

thanks sara....DOT I've linked a post from Gateway Pundit that you might be able to access.

Ah, you are a veritable Amazon of Perceptivity, my dear.

I harbor a special disdain for John-Boy Hair-and-Makeup since a post of mine on his extramarital activities was accused of being "spam" to blogger, which put my blog in the penalty box for a few days.

I hope this & the ensuing torrent of stand-up jokes will keep this bucket of smarmy toxic waste out of the Atty General job that the ultra-left trial lawyers wanted one of their own to inhabit.

And he visits the cute lil tot at 3AM in the morning just cuz he loves kissin' babies!!!

That'll be the sanctimonious piety that the NYT will cling to in its PMS gray ladydom.

PeterUK

""ComeOn.org" grab everybody?" The one by Eddie Cochran ?

Porchlight

Lesley, how neat! They are both great schools. Love the idea of you visiting your daughter in Nfld, my favorite little town in all the world. :)

bgates

Given that Edwards has admitted to visiting Hunter in the hotel, the Enquirer's pictures are at worst fake but accurate. And SnappedShot hasn't established that they're fake. (Of course, the burden of proof should be on the Enquirer to establish that they're real; the fact that Edwards has admitted to the bulk of the story counts on that score, I should think.)

clarice

Dot and I see eye to eye again. TM,invite Kaus here for a well-deserved victory lap.

Porchlight

fact that Edwards has admitted to the bulk of the story counts on that score

Precisely, bgates. The existence of the pictures is a big chunk of the reason Edwards had to fess up. If they were fake, he'd know it, and he'd have much less to worry about. The NE probably has more photos that they're holding back, probably taken while Edwards was being chased around the hotel.

bio mom

Most disgusting of all to me is the CNN and MSNBC Dem pundits right now. Puke, Puke. Doing their darnedest to pretend this is not anything that important and that, according to that ..... Paul Begala, the Edwards message is what is important and that is what needs to be concentrated on. There were others on air on the cables as well trying to minimize this similarly. Do they think that Americans are that juvenile and stupid to buy that?? Disgusting.

Sue

bio mom,

Two words. Bill Clinton. Americans were juvenile and stupid and bought it.

BumperStickerist

I can tell you one thing:

Next year, on their anniversary, Elizabeth Edwards may let John take her to Wendy's for dinner.

But it's going to be a Wendy's in the Mediterranean.

Publius

It will be interesting to compare and contrast the coverage John Boy receives with what Larry Craig was subjected to.

PeterUK

"he Edwards message is what is important and that is what needs to be concentrated on."

It does indeed, the gutless wonder has declared that if no one else claims paternity a poor innocent little child has been dubbed illegitimate.
A fine figure of a man to have stand on Hope and Change.

Rick Ballard

"...and he's visiting her and the kid at some hotel. Why?"

Karl,

The visit to the hotel occured in the other America. That's where the baby was conceived, too. People have always misunderstood Edwards' reference to 'two Americas'.

MayBee

I'm pretty sure I heard Chuck Todd trying to peddle the idea that Edwards didn't know Hunter was going to be at the hotel that night when he went to see McGovern (through a side door).

My guess is he has not yet told Elizabeth this is his baby, and that's why the half admission.

I've been past the Beverly Hills Hilton about 4 times in the past 2 weeks, and every time I sooo wish I had been driving past the night in question.

Jane

Next year on their anniversary Elizabeth Edwards may be dead.

The man can sleep with anyone he wants, but sheesh what a thing to do to his kids. Nice legacy John boy.

Jim Rhoads aka vnjagvet

The Riell Diell has been forever exposed as the Riell Phonie Pony.

Personally, I think he is a Riell Asshole and my wife, who does not usually approve of my using such phraseology, has put her imprimatur on the appellation in this case.

Riell Dipshit also comes to mind.

What a slug of a human being. And this is from one trial lawyer to another.

The chances are now much higher that he is the dad, and his denial is disgusting. If he is so damn sure of that fact, he should immediately offer to exclude himself by DNA sample.

Finally, the silence of the vaunted "fourth estate" is now exposed that institution for what it is, BARD: The pravda/isvestia for the democratic party.

Sue

John and Elizabeth are about to make a statement. This should be good.

MayBee

The man can sleep with anyone he wants, but sheesh what a thing to do to his kids. Nice legacy John boy.

I'm not fond of Elizabeth Edwards, although I certainly wish good health on her. I think she is a nasty attack dog.
However, knowing your husband has another child while you are married, and knowing how that will complicate your own children's lives, would be unbearable.

Dave

I'm not exactly a fan of Coulter, but her point was not to call Edwards a 'faggot', exactly:

"I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word "faggot," so I — so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards."

She was making a (IMO) humorous anti-PC reference to the story in the news back then where there was this well-known (I guess; I never heard of the guy before this scandal) soap opera actor who went off on his gay coworker and called him a 'faggot', and then checked himself into rehab in the wake of all the uproar over it.

MayBee

Is Elizabeth going to stand by his side?

Don't do it, Elizabeth!!!

Sue

MayBee,

Probably.

Sue

If he is telling the truth, Elizabeth knew about the affair when she was encouraging everyone to vote for John. To keep campaigning after being rediagnosed.

Jane

Don,

Is it okay to call Obama a "chimp" since your side has been using that word to describe President Bush for 8 years?

Just checking.

Rick Ballard

I wonder if she will review a tape of Senator Clinton doing the 'stand by your meal ticket' schtick prior to her performance? I pray that she wins her bout with cancer but I have as little respect for her as I do for Senator Clinton. Ten times as much respect as I have for their husbands but still not enough to fill a thimble.

MayBee

I'm kind of digging David Shuster right now.
Someone was trying to give politicians a pass for having affairs, and Shuster said "there are plenty of politicians that, despite everything we give them, manage not to cheat on their wives".

Buford Gooch

So, Edwards was in favor of "drilling" back then?

Sara

Sheesh, is there any story more booring than this Edwards story? Who cares?

I cannot believe that Fox just broke off a live report from Georgia to give us "breaking news" on John Edwards remarks. And they didn't even answer my one and only question, did he or didn't he mess up his very important hair?

Booooooooooooring!

Letalis Maximus, Esq.

OK. He admitted it. He may still be lying about the kid.

Now the MSM can start hectoring us about how it is time to move on.

Jim Rhoads aka vnjagvet

Beginning of spin on CNN:

"Edwards has just admitted to lying about sex."

He did say he has agreed to take tests for paternity. He should be required to do so for the baby's sake.

Dave

Buford Gooch: Best line of the day!

PapayaSF

Edwards' statement seems like another "modified limited hangout," if anyone remembers that term. It also has at least two parts likely to cause him trouble: 1) the somewhat gratuitous "I didn't love her" bit, which probably ticked off Rielle, and 2) the "maybe someone is giving her money but not me" part, which run through the Clintonian parser probably means "people in my employ arranged it with my OK."

I also think it's unlikely that the Enquirer faked any photos. They have a long history of being sued, and now run everything past lawyers. Intentional libel doesn't seem like their style.

PeterUK

I agree with Sara, perhaps there should be a Georgia thread. It's been on my mind a lot today.

Sue

Senator Clinton

Asked at an Obama event in Nevada about the affair, Hillary Clinton said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the Edwards family and that's all I have to say."

I'll be that was all she had to say.

Laurent Fourier

Unbelievable. This is from Edwards' statement:

'I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.'

Remind you of any other Democratic politicians?

sherlock

"Sheesh, is there any story more booring than this Edwards story?"

Yes, he is certainly a boor, but boring? No, this is not boring at all! It's an exciting game of "Petard, Liberal Slimeball, MSM Sycophants: some assembly required."

Sara

Who the hell cares about some stupid politician who couldn't keep it in his pants. There is a war brewing, Georgia has declared martial law and brought its troops home from Iraq to defend the homeland. Putin is rattling the sabers and wants to bring back all those countries to the Soviet Union.

MayBee

I'm not bored.

Captain Hate

Does this mean the NPR types will finally take their Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers off?

MayBee

Who the hell cares about some stupid politician who couldn't keep it in his pants. There is a war brewing, Georgia has declared martial law and brought its troops home from Iraq to defend the homeland. Putin is rattling the sabers and wants to bring back all those countries to the Soviet Union.

I can be interested in a lot of things at once.

matt

Is anyone keeping a scorecard of politicians excesses? Lessee, we have, on the democrat side:

John Edwards
Jesse Jackson
William Jefferson Clinton
Kwame Kilpatrick
Barney Frank
William Jefferson

on the Republican side we have:

Larry Craig
Ted Stevens
Randy Cunningham

hmmm..interesting trends....an honest politician is one who stays bought? and the dems? discuss among yourselves....

matt

how many troops did Georgia have in Iraq? 12?

Dave

Is this going to be a tradition every 10 years, a slimy Southern liberal Democrat politician is caught getting some strange and reports in the Enquirer get ignored by the MSM until the evidence becomes too overwhelming to overlook?

Neo

Best headline (so far) ..

Prominent Democrat Comes Out In Favor Of Drilling

Dave

When's the info on Huma Abedin and Alexandra Polier going to be in the MSN, I wonder?

Patrick R. Sullivan
I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic.

I'm sure Elizabeth Edwards will call in to Hardball the next time Ann Coulter is on, to apologize and admit Ann was right about her husband.

MayBee

Ha!

Sara

2000 Georgian troops in Iraq.

I can be interested in many subjects at once, but some dem. politician's sexual exploits is not of interest and I can't understand why anyone even cares. And I certainly don't think it is Breaking News more important than a war breaking out.

centralcal

Nope, not bored. I can multi-task, as I am sure most here can too.

I've been watching the Edwards coverage on all cable stations. Worst attempts at damage control - Begala (CNN) and Lanny Davis (Fox). Old Clinton wounds coming back to pierce them, I presume.

The biggest surprise - the craptastic Jack Cafferty pretty much chewed Edwards up and spit him out, especially his self-serving statement.

MayBee

I keep thinking about when Elizabeth Edwards said Lynne Cheney must not really love, and must be embarrassed by, her daughter.
It was completely gratuitous, and now her husband seems to have a bit of an embarrassed by his daughter problem.

MayBee

why anyone even cares.

Because humans crave gossip.

Sara

Oh, and Matt, according to one source I saw, Georgia's 2000 troops makes them the 3rd largest contributor to the coalition forces.

Sara

I can't find my original link, but Ace has it too:

Ossetia War Update: Georgia Recalls Troops From Iraq

Enlightened

Hmmm....Edwards says he started loving himself more (narcissist), and thought he was the Man (egocentric), and instead of just masturbating in front of a mirror whilst saying "I'm The Man"(egocentric narcissism) he has an affair thoroughly debasing his terminally ill wife. He is a very disturbed man.

windansea

Edwards statement:

Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public. When a supermarket tabloid told a version of the story, I used the fact that the story contained many falsities to deny it. But being 99% honest is no longer enough.

LOL he's lying even when he lies about lying

any statisticians available to analyze the 99% honesty of his denials?

Donald

I was in Destin Florida yesterday morning. I turned on the radio and there was the Bill Press show. Really. Bill was pontificating on the fact that John is an incredible lawyer and politician, and had to put and end to this now! Why? Because he owed it to the country to speak at that convention. John knows the laws on libel and slander (And how!), so he had to speak up soon or people might start to wonder if it was true or not. Really. His question of the day then became, did it make sense and did we all as good progressives want him on that stage. Well, the calls started. The basic theory uttered by more than one caller was that Ms. Hunter (He don't love her and that kid aint his)was a client and he was being professional by not choosing to comment. I swear on a stack of playboys or five dollar bills, or bibles if need be. Well, I hit the ole cell and was on with Bill in a moment. I mentioned that the reason he wasn't speaking is because he had banged her and it was his kid. Bill, kinda hemmed and hawed on that one. I then opined that I would absolutely love for the american people to watch him leave that slime trail across the stage to that speakers podium, and spew out his particular brand of class hatred populism. I mentioned that most people find him to be incredbly offensive. Bill told me I didn't understand just how fantastic a politician John Edwards is then cut me off. In all fairness, he didn't comment on my extremely deep southern accent, which I've heard by more than one "progressive".

Rachel

IF Elizabeth is really dying, then I hope she buys a gun and plugs the SOB. No jury would convict.

And what a great way to get your gal-pal on the payroll! What do you bet he was banging her the first night they met, and then found her a job?

Sara

Because humans crave gossip.

Not this human. Gossip is good for one thing in my book, fuel for mocking the gossips.

Two of my top ten pet peeves are tattletales and gossips. Right up there with gum chewers and lip smacker eaters. And TV or movies that show two people kissing with sound effects that sound like a cow pulling its foot out of wet mud.

Enlightened

Well, I must say I am fascinated by Silky Pony's abject hypocrisy. And g-damn he is one hell of a liar. I'm guessing next stop for him is either sex addiction-rehab, or liar-rehab. Some sort of rehabbing must be done. It's for the children!

I wish someone would ask Barack Obama if he is having, or has had - an affair. I would even like it better if they asked Michelle Obama if Barry ever cheated on her. Wishful thinking - but fun as hell. I mean, what question could ever be worse than asking John McCain if he called his wife the C-word like that dipshit did at the townhall meeting a while ago.....

Sue

I don't agree Sara. This is about a man who came close to being vice president of the US and who lied continually while running for president.

Sue

The story is also about the MSM covering for Edwards while reporting innuendos about McCain and Guiliani. Which turned out to be untrue. And this turned out to be true.

Patrick R. Sullivan

Let's have a big hand for the 2007 Father of the Year

Jim Rhoads aka vnjagvet

I have a new one (pet peeve) Sara. Edwards Rielley Rielley lying and Bagal and Davis trying to whitewash it.

But Putin is getting pretty annoying too. I guess he was just waiting for The One to go on vacation.

Extraneus

I bet there are millions of people who already knew about this story from The National Enquirer at the supermarket, knew the MSM wasn't covering it, and now for the first time understand what the MSM has been doing to them all along.

Extraneus

Patrick R. Sullivan, lol.

Jane

Let's hope Extraneus.

MayBee

And we didn't gossip about the Wilson/Plames?
Sure we did.

MayBee

Well, now the Edwards campaign finance guy admits he paid Hunter.
The story remains interesting as long as Edwards keeps lying.

Sue

MayBee,

Interesting. I had already guessed ole Baron (of Baron and Bud fame) as the benefactor from Texas. Mr. Baron, and his partner, Mr. Bud, made their fortune on asbestos lawsuits. Well, in the last decade or so.

MaidMarion

The Editor-in-Chief of National Review, who appeared on several TV/radio shows this afternoon, mentioned that this was Edwards' second visit to the Hilton to meet Hunter; he had met her there a month earlier as well.

What I haven't heard mentioned anywhere yet is this admission which ABC claims Edwards made to Bob Woodruff in the ABC interview to be aired tonight on Nightline:

"Edwards today admitted the National Enquirer was correct when it reported he had visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month. The former Senator said his wife had not known about the meeting."

Why would Edwards keep secret from his wife that he was meeting with a woman he didn't love and a baby who wasn't his in a hotel room at 2 a.m. in the morning?

Porchlight

Holy cow, Patrick R., when I saw your link I thought it was a joke. It's real!

Joan

Re whether the Edwards scandal is boring and worth our attention. What the Breck Girl did goes to the very heart of the man. In the final analysis, mankind and humanity is based on one's word. Can you keep your word? To your spouse? Children? Friends? Political party? Country? If not, then what are you? What lies at your core?

It is one thing to have an open marriage (maybe closed to outsiders, but open in that each partner agrees that a little bit on the side won't kill their partnership.) We probably won't ever know if Elizabeth Edwards gave John Edwards the okay years ago to dally. (And, as an aside, I would bet that this isn't the first time the man has strayed, but ... whatever, the distant past in their marriage doesn't matter now.) But, when Edwards stepped into the political arena and paraded his story before the entire country, he owed fidelity to people in his party and others who would vote for him. He owed honor to his children. He owed his attention to his dying wife.

So, this is why the Edwards/Rielle scandal is newsworthy. At his core, John Edwards doesn't seem to be the kind of man entitled to the position of VP of our country, or attorney general or secretary of state or a justice on the Supreme Court. We, as citizens of this country, should hold politicians to a higher standard. If we don't, we deserve the scum that will rise to the top.

Sara

I don't agree Sara. This is about a man who came close to being vice president of the US and who lied continually while running for president.

Sue: but he isn't running now, he is a loser. And it isn't as if everyone didn't know about this story back then or at least for the past month. How many ways can you ask the question, does Edwards have any political future, will he be welcome at the convention? Is that breaking news?

My big beef today is how they keep interrupting real news with BREAKING NEWS and then it is the same ol' same ol' they've been talking about all day.

That plus, why is this such a surprise anyway? Is there anyone who doesn't know that democrats lie, especially about sex.

Real news today, Putin invading another sovereign country. Call me old-fashioned but when Russia is invading another country, it raises my blood pressure.

President Bush telling off the Chinese. Barely a mention.

Sara

damn!

MayBee

Interesting, Sue.
That article says Baron paid for "the couple", Hunter and Andrew Young, to relocate. That shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

Here's one thing about Edwards. I know people do the wrong thing, and they try to protect themselves. Often. But when you get caught doing something, and someone reports it, and you say it is untrue- you are calling them a liar when you know they are not. You are impugning someone else for your own benefit.

I don't really expect perfect behavior or admissions before the fact. But for heaven's sake, if you get caught, don't blame the person that caught you.
That's what I ultimately hated about the Clintons.

MayBee

Now Elizabeth Edwards is posting at Daily Kos.
