If Obama becomes President his popularity will sag and he will make unpopular decisions widely viewed as unsound.
No, that's not my opinion. My source is the always entertaining Joe Biden, who seems intent on lowering expectations to the point that the nation will marvel if Obama has the competence and vision to remember to show up on Jan 20 to be sworn in.
"I promise you, you all are gonna be sitting here a year from now going, 'Oh my God, why are they there in the polls? Why is the polling so down? Why is this thing so tough?' We're gonna have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years. So I'm asking you now, I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point because you're going to have to reinforce us."
"There are gonna be a lot of you who want to go, 'Whoa, wait a minute, yo, whoa, whoa, I don't know about that decision'," Biden continued. "Because if you think the decision is sound when they're made, which I believe you will when they're made, they're not likely to be as popular as they are sound. Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound."
I don't like the sound of that. The good decisions won't be popular? The suspense is killing me. And speaking of killing me, what about this fear-mongering from Biden?
"Mark my words," the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you don't remember anything else I said. Watch, we're gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."
"I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate," Biden said to Emerald City supporters, mentioning the Middle East and Russia as possibilities. "And he's gonna need help. And the kind of help he's gonna need is, he's gonna need you - not financially to help him - we're gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it's not gonna be apparent initially, it's not gonna be apparent that we're right."
Oh, great - so per Biden, after Obama gets the 3 AM phone call we will all think he blew it. I deplore this negative, attack-oriented campaigning. C'mon, Joe, give me a reason to Go With O!
Hmm - people deplored similar fear-mongering from Hillary and Rudy. Seasons change.
MORE: Jim Geraghty worries that the Senate won't be able to advise and consent in a crisis:
I'm hoping that, if Obama is elected, he nominates the best attorney general, secretary of state, secretary of defense, secretary of homeland security, etc., he can find. But if a crisis is unfolding, the Senate will probably be under enormous pressure to confirm the nominees and get them into their jobs as quickly as possible. That seems like less than ideal circumstances for the Senate to exercise appropriate scrutiny.
When did we expect scrutiny from Harry Reid and his 59 fellow Dems?
Jennifer Rubin has fun:
Well, golly, if Obama is so untested that we will have a series of international crises — at the very time we are in a financial meltdown — which will make the Cuban Missile Crisis look like a walk in the park, shouldn’t we vote for the other guy who will keep all the miscreants in their place? Now, maybe we should rest easy because, according to Biden, “I’ve forgotten more about foreign policy than most of my colleagues know, so I’m not being falsely humble with you.” (Maybe Hezbollah’s occupation of Lebanon was one of the things he forgot.)
The Captain reminds us of Kennedy's meeting with Krushchev "without preconditions":
What resulted? The Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy wound up trading strategic intel and missile installations in western Asia in exchange for Soviet withdrawal of the nuclear missiles from Cuba. The entire Kennedy administration turned out to be a foreign-policy disaster that was only overlooked because of the tragic assassination of Kennedy in Dallas in 1963.
I agree with Biden. Obama is exactly like Kennedy in this regard, and our enemies will test us by threatening our interests around the globe if we elect Obama. I’d rather avoid the problem altogether and elect a man who puts enough fear into the minds of our enemies to keep them from testing us at all.
Biden is trying to put lipstick on the Bay of Pigs.
The "Troofers" will have a ball with this crisis stuff from this half-witted a-hole Biden.

I have this vision of Biden, looking in the mirror, and doing a DeNiro performance, similar to the-'you talking to me?'-only instead he keeps going with the line-
"I'm in control here."

Sue: McCain and Palin both are hitting the tax issue hard at every campaign stop and rally. Your question would be better asked as why the media is so silent that you think they aren't.
Posted by: Plumber's Pal | October 20, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I have watched several of McCain's campaign stops and haven't seen him address the issue I raised.
Posted by: Sue | October 20, 2008 at 10:49 PM
Ugh!
'KKK' etched into McCain supporter's car...
Clearwater - CLEARWATER Frank Armstrong was preparing to go for a jog this morning when he noticed his Lexus – adorned with a McCain-Palin sticker - had been vandalized with obscenities and a burned American flag.
Armstrong discovered the damage to his 2006 Lexus about 8:30 a.m. at his Sand Key condominium at 1400 Gulf Blvd. Clearwater police and Armstrong said someone etched obscenities and "KKK" into the paint, burned several areas of the car with cigarettes, set the flag on fire on his hood and may have urinated on the vehicle. Officers and Armstrong think the car was singled out because of its political stickers, including one reading "Nobama."
"This is definitely a hate crime," said Armstrong, a 41-year-old physician.
Police estimated damage at $4,500. Police classified the incident as "criminal mischief/hate crime" and said it appeared "to be politically/racially motivated because the victim affixed a bumper sticker supporting the McCain campaign as well as an anti-Obama bumper sticker."

Hey, thanks! Too bad I effed up a dollar sign on the pic and put a percent sign in mistakenly. Why oh why don't I have layers of editors and fact checkers? I've corrected it, but Ace hasn't gotten it yet.
Bummer. More to come, and hopefully correct out of the chute...

Who can doubt that Obama will destroy America's enemies with a snap of his thumbs and have all nations worship us within a week of his election. He will solve all our ills and turn America into a paradise.
For Obama tells me so.

And somewhere, I think it was in one of Obama's books, he is talking about a half-brother that is the only uncontested heir of Obama Sr. Anyway, I love conspiracies until they fall off the deep end. This one is teetering there but who really cares? If Bush can be the "W" of Oliver Stone's movie, Davis can be Obama's father. Pops.
Posted by: Sue | October 20, 2008 at 11:59 PM
My Gawd. If you listen http://www.hawaii.edu/uhwo/clear/HonoluluRecord1/Frankvideo.html>here at the poetry written by Davis, you will never, ever, ever, believe Obama did not know and agree with what the right Rev. Wright said from the pulpit of his church. He was preaching Davis' words.
Posted by: Sue | October 21, 2008 at 12:06 AM
There was nothing Obama said in the early days of the campaign that made me think he didn't agree with people like Wright, Ayers, and Pfleger.
He's gotten more "I love this country!" as the election has progressed, but that's it.

Jim, I've only gotten through a some of it, too. I'm going to make my way through it.
I don't know much about hypnosis, but I do believe in it. The demagogue who can intimidate, make guilty, and make angry through non-rational oratory skills is hypnotizing his audience, in my view. The spouse who stays with the abusive spouse when leaving the situation is viable is in a hypnotic state, too. A salesman who can sell you what you don't want is a hypnotist.

"Because if you think the decision is sound when they're made, which I believe you will when they're made, they're not likely to be as popular as they are sound. Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound."
If they're so sound, then why do you expect them to be so unpopular? Don't treat us like were children, tell us why you're doing what you're doing and well be the judges on weather or not it's "sound".

That hypnosis piece is quite interesting. Early on, footnote 1 opens with the following:
Not exactly a profound observation for anybody who reads and/or argues with a reality-impaired Obama supporter.
I note that some Obama supporters are not so reality impaired, in that they recognize his shuck and jive for what it is.

Biden was clearly referring to something akin to the Chinese Spy Plane crisis that Bush faced within his first six months. It was obviously staged by the Chinese to test the new President. For the record, Biden, Harry Reid, and a good deal of Democrat senators supported Bush at the time. "Bush is doing a first rate job," Biden was quoted as saying. Liberal rags like the NYTimes, on the other hand, blamed the U.S. and demanded Bush apologize to the Chinese.

Did anyone else recoil at the amber stains?
At first. I didn't like the poem, but then it wasn't written for me to like it. I think it is all metaphors for their ties. Whether those ties are biological, skin color or ideologue, I can only guess. Maybe all 3. I kind of like the idea of him being just a regular African/American and not a African-American. I think I'll stick with Davis as his biological father for a little while longer.

Posted by: clarice plumber | October 21, 2008 at 11:56 AM
-- Biden was clearly referring to something akin to the Chinese Spy Plane crisis that Bush faced within his first six months. --
Biden was explicit.
It's a really stupid and untestable prediction, because there are international incidents on an almost daily basis, many of which can be inflated to be the issue that Biden claims to have predicted in October 2008.
I found the follow-on to be most audacious. Whatever a Democratic administration does is "right," especially if it's unpopular. Lemmings.

Jim-
Wow. Wow. Wow. It is a long article but it is required reading. Found a footnote to this as well.
One of the incidents during Obama's primary campaign that was strange was totally explained: when Obama was pressing an audience to vote early in the North Carolina primary. It was a bizzare mash of speechifying and hand gestures-he was using the hypnotic techniques described in the paper.
