By way of Drudge the must-read "News of the World" breaks and fakes news about Olympic star Michael Phelps:
THIS is the astonishing picture which could destroy the career of the greatest competitor in Olympic history.
In our exclusive photo Michael Phelps, who won a record EIGHT gold medals for swimming at the Beijing games last summer, draws from a bong.
The glass pipes are generally used to smoke cannabis.
And after sporting chiefs announced laws which mean four-year bans for drug-taking, Phelps’ dreams of adding to his overall 14 gold medal tally at the 2012 games in London could already be OVER.
I am not a sports attorney, but per World Anti-Doping Agency rules (2008, 2009) marijuana is banned only as an in-competition drug. That would contrast with, for example, anabolic steroids, the use of which is banned at any time, including during off-season training.
The news that Michael Phelps is a recreational pot user may or may not help his status with advertisers but if he can put the pipe down during actual competitions he should be fine. If you have been looking forward to the London Olympics to see what Phelps can do for an encore don't let News of the World harsh your mellow.
SINCE YOU ASKED:
Marijuana will remain banned for several reasons, agency officials with the World Anti-Doping Agency or WADA said.
They argue that in some sports, it can be performance enhancing to calm nerves before a competition. The drug is also unethical and illegal in most countries, and according to the agency's research, it is harmful to an athlete's health.
AND BECAUSE YOU ARE RELENTLESSLY CURIOUS: Just as you thought, caffeine has the potential to be a performance enhancer and it has been added to the in-competition list on a "monitored-only" basis; if the Powers That Be conclude it is being abused, it may be banned. As if.
