"Why not put them up in the Lincoln bedroom?"

Arafat stole the towels.

Extraneus

Did someone say rant-fest? I'm in!

Barack Obama never would have been elected if he weren't half-black, and it's now time to experience an Affirmative Action President. Think of all the formerly-great companies who have for decades hired and promoted based on non-merit criteria. Places where people like Obama are feted, fought over, schmoozed, begged to join, celebrated and fawned over for the mere fact of their "minority" status. And not just companies. Law schools, medical schools, engineering schools. Every facet of society. Consider all of the business decisions made by people of dubious qualifications who are virtually untouchable once they achieve or are handed a certain level of responsibility.

After compromising our founding principles, convincing ourselves that they weren't fair, it's unfortunately somewhat just that we should reap what's coming.

PD

Arafat stole the towels.

Ah, right. "No towels" would make the detainees uncomfortable, and we can't have that.

Ewwww, Monica Crowley just said what I would have said had I been on O'Reilly. Go Monica! It's hard to believe your sister is married to that douche, Alan Colmes.

PeterUK

Sue,
The video in question is also three years old,but the issue gives the prigs of the vicariously offended classes a chance to roll out their PC credibility and a chance to bash a royal.

The reason the police allowed the out rages on the streets is simple ,the RoP is a protected species. The immigrant vote is what keeps Labour in power in England, without it not a few Labour MPs would have to get proper jobs.

Pofarmer: I agree with you, but the smacking around is best done by cutting off their oxygen - don't watch 'em, don't listen to 'em, don't read 'em.

Sue

Fair and balanced outrage would be nice for a change.

I just listened to a priest talk about St Augustine's justification for war and he said (with certainty) that Israel is using white phosphorus on the Palestinians (no mention of Hamas) which next to a nuclear bomb is the "most damaging material in the universe".

He prefaced his remarks by saying the Israeli's prohibited any reporting from Gaza.

So in the question part of the meeting I asked him how he knew about the white phosphorus if no reporting was being done in gaza - he replied a civilian told AP - the irony of his answer was lost on him.

At any rate has anyone heard anything about white phosphorus?

peter (us, not uk)

Is anyone besides me sort of wondering why Prince Harry is in trouble for calling someone "Paki" and "raghead" and those calling for Jews to be thrown into ovens are getting a pass?

yes, Mark Steyn

BobS

The View today makes me wonder aloud whether any US politician - without any evidence of wrondoing or unethical behavior - has evergone through the kind of hysterical loathing of such volume as has Palin. It boarders on simlilarities that public condemnation has found an OJ Simpson, a Michael Jackson, a Tim McVie. And as other have observed here this evening, there's a danger out there that the American concscience is being taken over by lunacy of a political party which values its own power much more than the nation it claims to represent. The swindles financing that lined the pockest of DEM pols from Banks and Wall Street enabled the Obama power grab.

We must be resolute in effort to combat their propoganda. Even the smallest insignificant blog like my own can make a difference.

The REP party has to have new leadership. One advantage of Voinivich leaving in Ohio is that rob Portman will go for his seat. John Cornyn bad needs to get solid candidates for Senate in two years and fast. The Congressional races need to be nationalized like they did when gingrich took over.

PD

At any rate has anyone heard anything about white phosphorus?

Not since the last time that canard was floated.

centralcal

WooHoo - FINALLY! No Alan Colmes during my cocktail hour.

Jane, it's the latest blood libel I think.

Rick Ballard

"At any rate has anyone heard anything about white phosphorus?"

The IDF denies the report:

The Israeli army meanwhile denied deploying white phosphorus bombs in Gaza, after Palestinian medics said they had treated patients for burns caused by the munition.

Army spokesman Capt Guy Spigelman told the BBC that Israel "categorically denied" using white phosphorus in Gaza, saying other "smoke bombs and flares" were being deployed.

We have used white phosphorous weapons occasionally in Iraq.

What did Monica say, Sue..I'm still maintaining radio (actually tv )silence.

"As President, I will close Guantanamo, reject the Military Commissions Act, and adhere to the Geneva Conventions."
The GC gives specific protections to lawful combatants, who give up certain things in order to get those protections. They give up the protection of hiding in the midst of noncombatants and wear uniforms. They minimize civilian casualties to what is unavoidable. They work under a chain of command.

For those who don't earn the protections of lawful combatants, there are the original natural rules of warfare. Where soldiers rape and pillage, and civilians loot the dead and dying on battlefields, and those who manage to catch a soldier in some weakened state can torture and/or kill him just for fun.

So, what has Obama suggested here? We close down gitmo after taking each one of its unlawful combatants, chopping off arms and legs, and dropping his naked torso on a fire ant hill in the blazing sun until he dies after a few days? All broadcast over live pay-per-view? Obama can call it "GCTV".

MayBee

At any rate has anyone heard anything about white phosphorus?

This went around a few years ago, about the US using it in Iraq. Cecil can tell you more about what it is used for, but the controversy in a nutshell is that some leftist made up the "fact" that it caramelizes the skin. The showed pictures of dead "victims" that were a little...juicy. This was supposed to be the horrible death of white phosphorous wherein your skin had been carmelized. In reality, it was just the juice of a dead body starting to decay.

I am all anxieted out, I've raised my misgiving over a dozen threads. The "Show Me State" has turned decidedly odd, lately, something in the Missippit runoff perhaps. Then again, McCain, well lets be blunt Sarah carried the state, after two weeks of subterfuge, 'truth alerts, ACORN skull
dugerry, et al. Anne clearly handled the harpies at the View, I'd ask for combat pay, but that's just me.

The Oleaginous James Wolcott, delivered his verdict on 2008 and he sees Lieberman as a loser (when did he write this, November) and
Sarah; because she puffed Tina Fey fans and
was Conversative Viagra (and he references Lowry's comments on projecting) the Irony is more than a little galling, a Obamot and
fairly confident a former Clinton minion, talking about undue attraction. Yes she's attractive , only the blind and Andrew Sullivan would miss that, Wolcott's cattiness would suggest the latter. Frankly that was one of the places where the Tina Fey impression was least accurate, But I
wouldn't vote for Scarlett Johanson (watch out Michelle) or any of the other starlets
on that basis. She's right on the issues, clearly young master Friersdorf, is so off
the charts, it's not even funny. She projects compassion and toughness, "her political instincts are first rate, and she's guaranteed to annoy all the right people" That was David Warren's call which
Vanderleun and Freedberg echo; he even has
it as banner on his blog. She's grounded to a remarkable degree by her faith and her family, that enables her to appear
unperturbed by all the minutia. She is genuine in a way I haven't seen either from direct observation, or historical research.
Wolcott calls her 'prelapsarian' and in a sense she is, a throwback to what this country used to believe in. I don't know if there are enough clear minded folk unpolluted by the KulturSmog any more, one hopes so, as I've said before, we need someone on 'the other side of the rainbow'.

So Obama is intent on closing down Gitmo, soonet if not later, my suggestion would be to send them to the other facilities on the island, Villa Marista (G-2 headquarter) the holding facilities at Rancho Boyeros airbase, the Cabana in Havana harbor, of course you can send them back to the tender embrace of the various General Intelligence
(Mukharabats) the Cercle Sportif in Algiers,
the Chinese Tewu, the SVR; and play the odds. That they won't ricochet back to the states for a final thank you.

As to the question of Prince Harry, who Birmingham cast as a major in his time travel tales. He and his brother are resolute in the way you don't see in the Royal Family or much of British society. Either would make a fine Prince Regent and future King. They are 'prelapsarian' in their own way. They requested service in Iraq, later accepted operating in the Helmand province. They are politically incorrect in the extreme. They are nothing like the Dhimmi Dauphin, Prince Charles and they threaten the Islamist front groups. What exactly are you supposed to call someone who happens to be Pakistani under your command. So they threaten their power

O'Reilly asked about the Prince Harry story and Monica listened to Margaret Hoover say how awful it was and then she let loose with how she wanted to hear a military man like Patton calling them Japs and I can't remember the list of names she threw out and then she ended it with she was sick and tired of the feminization of our military and of war. Get PC out of fighting a war. I was standing there woohooing her wishing she had an American flag and glass of whiskey!

Rick's absolutely right we've used "White Phosphorus" in Iraq, the key is how the media is showing it 's ignorance of the stuff and passing along the propaganda willy nilly.

Knowing just enough information about munitions to blow my own toes off, I defer to Bob Owens (Confederate Yankee) piece (LUN) on Phosphorus shells and the myth that endures. It really is more than informative.

I apologize in advance for this clarice, I am just waiting for some enterprising little rat from the "occupied territories" to start screaming that the Israelis are using a form of Zyklon-B, on babies, only. The problem with Citi's capitulation is that it means that not just Citi will have to pay the Beltway outfit if the bill passes. Other banks, borrowers and taxpayers will also suffer. In fact, this deal is looking more and more like a case of Citi colluding with its new political owners in order to force competing banks to break contracts and take more losses. This kind of politicized banking is precisely why the Bank of the United States was shut down in the 19th century.

After years of resisting, Citi has suddenly signed off on Senator Dick Durbin's plan to allow judges to rewrite mortgage contracts for borrowers in Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Under the Illinois Democrat's plan, which is earmarked for inclusion in the pending stimulus bill, judges could reduce the amount of principal, lower the interest rate, and change the length of the mortgage term.

Maybe they should run for Pawlenty's seat, he's not going to be needing it in two years. Probably a fool's errand. Portman in Ohio, exciting, not really but we could do worse and likely will. Heck they'll probably throw that human malaprop machine, Hackett against him.

Extraneous, don't even entertain that thought. Oswald's act in Dallas provided a generation of pop sociology on the authoritarian personality, from Altermeyer

We have used white phosphorous weapons occasionally in Iraq.

Contrary to some hand-wringers' claims, there is nothing illegal about using WP, even in a built-up area. The pertinent document specifically excludes standard WP round usage from its definition of "incendiary":

(b) Incendiary weapons do not include:
(i) Munitions which may have incidental incendiary effects, such as illuminants, tracers, smoke or signalling systems;
Moreover, even if it were used as an "incendiary weapon," the prohibition is not all-encompassing:
1. It is prohibited in all circumstances to make the civilian population as such, individual civilians or civilian objects the object of attack by incendiary weapons.
2. It is prohibited in all circumstances to make any military objective located within a concentration of civilians the object of attack by air-delivered incendiary weapons.
3. It is further prohibited to make any military objective located within a concentration of civilians the object of attack by means of incendiary weapons other than air-delivered incendiary weapons, except when such military objective is clearly separated from the concentration of civilians and all feasible precautions are taken with a view to limiting the incendiary effects to the military objective [. . .]
The purpose of the protocol is fairly clearly to outlaw firebomb attacks like the ones we made on Japan in WWII. The Wikipedia entry is less-than-usually biased, and makes the points that neither the US nor Israel are signatories, and in any case WP used for screening or marking (the usual uses) would not be a violation.

Mel

Sue-

Yes meaning they're both right. It will be left up to the attorney to determine venue.

After reading the article, it seems they are still talking about bankruptcy judges, who have indeed had the ability to cramdown (and still do) but didn't have that ability on home mortgage loans. I didn't remember that, for some reason.

Obama was to make Susan Rice position as UN ambassador cabinet level. Will she be able to negotiate at UN without input from HRC.
In a fitting end to the Bush presidency he had to make a last minute call yo Condi Rice to abstain from voting. Why were they complaining about Sarah Palin and the Bush Doctrine while Bush's cabinet made decisions on their own.
I feel sorry for Bush and Cheney for not being served well by his cabinet choices who were more influenced by members of the permanent government who tended to leak to NY Times and Washington Post on decisions that they found objectionable.

At least with Obama he will allow HRC to do her thing if successful claim credit if not throw her under the bus like everyone else.

What's the difference between artillery and missiles?

I sooo wish I could play that game.

Rick Ballard

Sue,

They have to tinker with the BK laws in two respects. The last revision of the law made a chunk of credit card debt non-dischargeable. This exacerbated the jingle keys phenomenon in Deadbeat Heaven - California - because of the no recourse provisions of CA mortgage law. That's one little Congressional oopsie. The second part has to do with what I believe will be a reach at changing MBS covenants so that a bank's agreement to modify a mortgage or acceptance of a cramdown in lieu of foreclosure cannot be construed as a default or 'trigger', an event that could, theoretically at least, set off a CDS provision. The fact that a credit event triggering a CDS can be determined in London by non-judicial means makes the whole business ever so much fun. It was about -20% worth of fun on the value of Citigroup today as the market digested potential outcomes of a Democrat Congress doing anything intelligent.

Zombiegroup and ZombieMotors both have their begging bowls out again.

Fithian

Mel:

"The anti-semitism today, from the left , which I find includes my own mother, to my shock, just absolutely floors me."

Substituting "anti-Israel" rhetoric for outright anti-semitic sentiment has allowed a lot of bigotry out of the closet. Jews, in overwhelming numbers, are and have long been the primary victims of "religious" hate crimes in this country, notwithstanding the accusations of rampant Islamaphobia. What stuns me is the lack of energetic public response to the unembarrassed anti-semitic rage on display in organized "protests" across the country which are just begging to end in violence. This will soon metastasize into even more egregious assaults on the undefended.

I was discouraged to realize that neither the article I linked above, nor this one chose to specify the underlying number of reported crimes against Jews, although they include the fact that the 115 reported incidents of hate crimes against Muslims had declined from 481 in 2001. I had to go the FBI source to discover that the Muslim stats had already declined to 156 in 2006, while the 967 reported crimes against Jews in 2007 were down a total of 2 attacks from 969 the year before.

The FBI notes that "a large number of states and localities either do not report hate crimes entirely or can be reasonably accused of underreporting them." Oddly enough they seem to have particular trouble interpreting the fact that the Southern states "tend to report lower overall numbers of incidents," which they simply label "ironic." Since those states are, in fact, among those who actually report such crimes, perhaps there are less ambiguous conclusions to be drawn.

Aside from geographic accessibility, one of the primary reasons that acts of terror have always been more common in Europe is that there is a network of supportive communities offering safe haven and material assistance. When you follow links from the ANSWER website, it's hard to avoid believing that a similar kind of connective tissue is developing here, and that groups with a multiplicity of agendas are empowering each by essentially pooling their resources. It's the empowerment that is new.

The sheer size of the United States, contributes to complacency, because lives in North Carolina, for example, are not demonstrably affected by the group hate currently being paraded in Boston, Ft. Lauderdale, New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Dearborn, Lexington KY, Minneapolis, Norfolk, Phoenix, Tampa, Washington D.C., Christiansburg VA, St. Petersburg, Philadelphia, Chicago, Lawrence KS, Springfield MO, Youngstown OH, Seattle, St. Louis and Denver. For starters.

Rick Ballard

Mel,

It certainly had a negative impact on the sector - who the hell wants financials that don't pay dividends in this market? Citi has a much bigger problem though. The CDS on those SIV chunks of garbage are all under one umbrella now - and you can see stars through that umbrella. Moody's or S & P could put Citi out of business tomorrow and they probably should. There are some very nice pieces on that corpse - pieces that would bring good money in the meat market.

Those claiming the IDF is using phospjorus are not suggesting they are using it as tracers..

Primary use for WP is for screening; secondary is marking (incendiary may be a tertiary depending on the round). Both are generally considered "smoke" rounds (usually designated "Smoke WP").

In any event it's the user who determines the what the military usage is. And it's perfectly acceptable to use an incendiary against a military target, even in a built-up area, as long as it can be separated from civilian concentrations. So unless they've got credible evidence of intentional incendiary effects that spread among a concentration of civilians . . . well, it isn't a violation . . . even amongst signatories to protocol III . . . which we aren't.

Is there some kind of problem with this?

This 1980 Protocol tightened the rules somewhat, but unless there's a concentration of civilians nearby . . .

They are demonstrating their hatred all over the country and many of these same people are wringing their hands over waterboarding a few really bad guys. The hypocrisy is sickening. To them, chanting "to the ovens" is nothing compared to drizzling a little water over someone's face.

It's only going to get worse. I believe strongly that Obama is an anti-semite to the core. You don't sit in that cesspool church for 20 years and then claim you are not a bigoted, racist, anti-semite.

"Is there some kind of problem with this?"

Only if you didn't use more than necessary. Napalm has a nicer scent though.

Is there some kind of problem with this?

It might give members of Hamas temporary retinal afterimages, poor dears.

A heads up for Thursday:

The first major policy battle of President-elect Barack Obama’s administration will set the tone for the next year for the Republican minority. With that in mind, House GOP Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) is pulling out the big guns.

Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will testify at 10 a.m. Thursday at a hearing on Obama’s economic stimulus ideas.

"And it's perfectly acceptable to use an incendiary against a military target, even in a built-up area, as long as it can be separated from civilian concentrations."

That's good to know.

Come and get me, coppers!

It was Michelle Malkin, her cohorts at Hot Air and their ilk who have ruined the Republican party.
That is complete garbage. Malkin and the general public favor enforcing immigration law and oppose the bailout(s), unlike the current Republican president and the last Republican nominee. I can't think of another issue where she breaks ranks with the party.

She does fight back against Democrats. I guess that puts her out of step with Republican "leadership", though I can't hold that against her either.

Caro

A panel on the cruise included Mitt and Pat Toomey. They talked some about the first bailout, TARP. Pat (against) ate Mitt's lunch on the subject.

Opposed to waterboarding: the Democratic party, and John McCain, the last Republican nominee.

Not so much: Sara, Michelle Malkin, her cohorts at Hot Air and their ilk.

Deal or No deal. He passed on the circle of hobos or ring of hobos or whatever The ONE HOBO is calling it. Still nothing.

Have any of you all read The Forsaken, by Tim Tzouliadis? My sister tells me that FDR does not come out of it looking good. As a matter of fact, she was appalled by him.

O.K, I really have lost all respect for Secretary Rice, four years ago, I was encouraged when Nordlinger sung her praises prior to the 2000 election. You cant' fault her for the August 2001 PDB, that was a dead end. I rooted for her to replace Powell, even before the Armitage deception became apparent. All the right people protested, then came the Hariri bombing and the Cedar Revolution, followed not long after that by the Rose Revolution in the Caucasus. Back in the day I thought she would be a viable replacement for Cheney. Then the dissapointments began, The Hamas election, was a low blow, followed shortly by the Lebanon War, where she vacilated in providing support for Israel. It's been downhill ever since, her chief aide, Zelikow, provided state department cables to Woodward, which undermined the administration's position in Iraq. She was also one of those who wasn't keen on Gitmo. In the end, her Scowcroft link, Caspian oil, and the State Department bureaucracy swallowed her up. This latest step, more a Khalizhad thing than Condi where the US voted de facto against Israel was the last straw. You'd think this would teach me something about having faith in any politician or bureaucrat so fervently, so far ahead of time. But no I never learn on this point. I think it's different this time, but who really knows.

PaulL: I grew up with the impression that FDR was one of the worst presidents we'd ever had, and was startled the first time I heard someone refer to him approvingly.

Sara-

They are demonstrating their hatred all over the country and many of these same people are wringing their hands over waterboarding a few really bad guys.

Come on, those wackos are using waterboarding (though most of them aren't doing it right) for street theater. I'd like to see some ambitious proscutor charge some of them for assult and torture just to see the look on the lefies faces. Your point is well taken of the anti-semitism on display too.

BobS-

But i guess if its anti-American in any way to support HAMAS, now thats a horse of a different color and theyre all for that.

First point is that the "Palestanians" have always been a cause de rigor for the left-becuase they were created by the left. Would the islamic radicals of Hamas and the old gurad marxists ETA work together? It's a tough question seeing as how secular socalists and religous fanatics have such unremitting hostility toward one another.

PaulL

My sister didn't like FDR before the book, either, but now the dislike is much stronger.

She finds it amusing that some in the media are claiming Obama will be the new FDR, as if that were a compliment.

PaulL

Condi has been worthless since the 2nd term. I don't know if her mission was to change the State Dept, but it sure didn't happen. It makes me wonder if she was as good as I had thought she was in the first term.

Pal2Pal (Sara)

She does fight back against Democrats.

Hahaahaha. Yeah right! She feeds them their Bush is evil talking points almost on a daily basis. He is almost out the door and she still can't help herself. IMHO, she invented and refined BDS. And, her shamnesty campaign was the biggest garbage going. Her campaign against immigration reform made sure nothing got done because with her it is always "my way or the highway." The president presented a perfectly sane 5 pt. plan that, had it been implemented in stages, would have covered all the bases. But, it did require staged implementation and some compromises and Malkin is too dumb to see that. Sorry, I cannot abide her.

She is one of those people who destroys without ever offering any viable alternatives, just bitch, bitch, bitch.

RichatUF

spelled a few words wrong in here (need coffee):

ambitious prosecutor charge some of them for assault and "torture" just to see the look on the lefties faces...

Haven't had a drink at all either.
