i wrote that up over the weekend..The Times is behind the power curve once again.

MDr

Well, what did we expect of The Once? On the bright side a Reuter's article reports that China is giving Obambi a hard time over the costs of his HC Reform plan. Better, I got a tingle up my leg - Reuter's referred to it as PelosiCare.

bgates

American scholars and activists demanded anonymity for fear of damaging relations with the White House, unlike Hu Shuli, a well-known Chinese journalist and one prominent defense lawyer, Mo Shaoping.

Americans think Obama will react worse to criticism than the Chinese think their government will.

bgates

Mr. Obama might singlehandledly have remade America’s image by showing up on the city’s many outdoor courts for a few rounds of hoops

It would have been awesome if Obama had singlehandedly remade America's image by joining in some spirited amateur athletic competition in Beijing, instead of stupid Bush who wasted time watching games when young Americans were dying in war.

bad

Ibowma is a weeny.

And he sucks......

narciso

So far he's dissapointing in three continent, Europe, Asia, & Africa, I could add South America, but Trinidad is technically an Island

Jack is Back!

So I guess the old Donald Trump admonition "when you owe a million dollars the bank has you by the balls but when you owe a few trillion dollars, you have them by the balls" is rubbish.

JiB,

Let's not forget that Maobama is a commie with the tin cup lying to another commie with a tin cup. The Chicom really doesn't have the pelf necessary to fill the Kendocom's cup. Maobama found the same problem (actually worse) in Japan.

He has to roll $1.5 T along with adding $1T in new Turbo Timmy funny money. A Chicom unable to fulfill Maobama's request (and unable to admit it) can be expected to thump tables and make demands. It will also give Maobama some cover when Dingy Harry finally throws in the towel.

Porchlight

Why did he go to China, anyway, if all he's going to do is tiptoe around?

NK

Tom--

Does Pinch Sulzberger know how you are using the NYT archives to humiliate Barry O AND the NYT? Does Carlos Slim know?

Anyway, all joking aside, after 10 months of this, it is my considered opinion that Barry O is a putz. He's a lefty; but people who did any due diligence like me (and Tom obviously) knew that in 2008; but what is stunning (even to jaded me) is how dumb Barry O is. He really is a knave and a fool.

Peace out. (even to you bgates, you are a moron)

bgates

"Peace out", NK? If any regular commenter, or indeed anyone with an IQ above 65, used such simpleminded codswallop they would would hang themselves, though coming from you, it's an unremarkably trite phrase.

Why don't you get teacher to read some of my posts - the one immediately before the one that got your panties in a bunch for instance - and explain to you that there are varieties of humor subtler than what give you such delight as you sit watching beer commercials with your thumb up your ass.

daddy

Long as we're commenting on Obama's visit to China, this is sort of on topic.

Am back stateside for a few days, but was in the Shanghai Market where the CNN reporter's got hassled probably a day or 2 before they got there. I know that market very well, and have my favorite shop and shop gals there I always visit. I hardly ever buy anything, (this trip simply a pair of sox) but don't mind dickering and feigning offense at such "high Prices" and playing the game and walking out angry and them then chasing me down and dragging me back in the shop and the whole bit which is mainly just a Kabuki comedy for all involved.

Some regular bootleg brands and items were not on display as they said the Police were in the market more prevalently than normal, so the standard stuff was hidden in all the usual places, and I didn't push it. I did spot 3 policemen hassling some storekeepers in a shop near the first floor entrance of the market, but stood off in the distance watching so as not to become part of the show. Overall there's about 200 smallshop stalls in this 4 story building. It's no mystery to me that these MSM guys wanted the Oba Mao paraphernalia, but would like to know which shop was being hassled over it, and would like to see when I visit my market girls next time, if they would fill me in on the ramifications to the shopkeepers at the offending store. I am confident the Shopgirls had no idea these CNN folks were anything but standard tourists shopping. Those consequences, if any, to those girls are the story that actually would be worth reporting on, so obviously it'll never be investigated at all by our totally incurious and oblivious CNNer's, and I don't think my regular gals will feel comfortable giving me the skinny on what really happened, but next time I return I'll at least ask, and if anything turns up I'll report it.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

I just posted the links to the Limbaugh-Palin audio/video in the Well, She Doesn't Take Newsweek Seriously thread. Three parts.

Gregory Koster

Bgates, I'd add to your comment on the scholars that the bulk of them are likely tenured and hence nominally secure from retaliation. But they and their spaghetti spines know better. Also is a fine dispaly of the hearty contempt The Once feels for academia. Why shouldn't he? He conned them into accepting him into their ranks.

daddy

And to use these current examples of gutless speak from President Obama in China, if we simply apply them to the anniversary of the wonderful consequences of Reagan's "Tear Down this Wall Mister Gorbachev!" speech in Berlin of a few days back, and place President Obama as the President and speechmaker in President Reagan's place at The Brandenburg Gate in 1987, I think it is safe to say that nobody 20 years later would be citing the amazing example of an East German Merkel running the Government of a free and unified Germany.

"It would be wrong for me to ask you Mister Gorbachez to Tear Down This Wall. Too often we American's have acted and spoken as if our ideas of freedom and human dignity are universal and should apply to all peoples everywhere on this planet. That has been hubris on our part, and I apologize for my predecessors who have encouraged the tearing down of this wall. You Russians and East German's have your own reasons for maintaining this wall, and I salute that, as it is a marvelous symbol of the legitimate differences between how we think a society should be ordered, and how you think a society should be ordered. So I say "Let This Wall Remain Standing Mister Gorbachev, as a mark of respect of the legitimate philosophical differences between your nation and my nation. And when you take my picture can you please take it from exactly the same place that John Kennedy had his photo taken?"

daddy

"Mr. Obama might singlehandledly have remade America’s image..."

Not to worry, that's exactly what Mr Obama's already doing.

PaulL

Very good, Daddy.

The thing about Ibama is that he is such a transparent egomaniac that I don't think many (any?) countries consider him as representing America. They know he represents himself.

Frau Plattdeutsch

Well, at least the Germans now realize Barry lied to them and the rest of the world; he's just another American full of carp.

Thomas Collins

Too bad Fox didn't cancel the interview on the ground that, just as Obama doesn't consider Fox a real news organization, Fox doesn't consider Obama a real President.

MayBee

Gad.
And do you see over at Political Punch, our Ambassador to China and the security advisor guy over there are praising Obama's popularity and the good questions he's asking.

justonebullet

"In a Nov. 11 Internet poll, Web surfers were asked to say what was most memorable about Mr. Obama. The majority noted his Nobel Peace Prize award."

He got that with words. Just words.

Porchlight

LOL TC, that's awesome.

anduril

I just read this at AT:

In China, “He acknowledged America's shortfalls and went out of his way to welcome China into a role of global leadership. He even ducked the only edgy question - from his ambassador, Jon Huntsman - about the great ‘firewall’ of China.” He apologized for the way “women in America” are treated by “men with old fashioned ideas about women.”

I'm trying to imagine what most Chinese made of this. Concubinage, after all, is making a big comeback in China. I well remember hearing about a group of Chinese from a major TV station in a very major city who visited the US. Three men and one woman, the woman being the news anchor. The woman was in charge of washing all their clothing in the bathtub of the hotel they were staying at. I'm not making this up. So, I wonder what Chinese make of Obama. He bows to "emperors" of their enemies, then visits them and apologizes for the way Americans treat women! I doubt this performance did anything for his bargaining position--the Chinese must be convinced they never ran into such a doofuss (sp?) before.

Pagar

Right off the top of my head, I would guess that the Ambassador to China wants to remain in that post and the security guy probably wants to hold on to his position too. I would be really surprised if they had said any thing bad about their boss.

matt

narciso;

don't forget his apology to the American Indians. All he has to do now is apologize to the Australians and it's a clean sweep. I'm still waiting for my apology.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

He apologized to the Chinese for the way men treat women in America? Good grief! What about the way women were treated in Afghanistan, or Iran, or almost anywhere else in the world.

Just freakin' amazing.

Ignatz

--He apologized for the way “women in America” are treated...--

Barry is the Pacific President so maybe that's why Michelle is permanently scowling, because Barry has her clodhoppers bound.

peter

He apologized to Communist China for the way Americans treat their women. Mao made one of his wives keep marching on the long march (while he was being pulled along in a sedan chair) while she was in labor, with the baby's freaking head crowning. see LUN

daddy

He apologized for the way “women in America” are treated by “men with old fashioned ideas about women.”

Yeah, just like all those old fashioned American women I constantly bump into over in Guangzho, China spending thousands and thousands of dollars to buy Chinese baby girls to raise as their beloved daughters. That's so much more old fashioned and unenlightened than the Chinese society which encourages abortion, infanticide, or the sale of the unwanted babies to old fashioned American chicks.

Glad he apologized for that on my behalf.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

This really frosts me. He bows to the Saudi king in obeisance and the Saudis have a terrible record with women's rights, in fact, they have no record at all. Women can't even drive nor go in public without their male relative. Laura Bush said that when she was their doing her breast cancer awareness tour, Saudi women knew nothing, and after they were educated with permission from their husbands, they still couldn't get treatment unless their husband allowed it and some did not.

The man is stark raving mad.

daddy

Too bad it was the Chinese and not we Americans that were intentionally breaking the feet of women and crippling them for generations so that they could fit in those itty bitty shoes, all to appeal to some peculiar fetish of old fashioned Chinese male sexual preference.

Bet he'd love to be able to apologize for that.

MayBee

Pagar- I think it is the lamest praise ever to make an appearance at a press conference.

Next, we'll be getting reports from a High-Ranking US Official that Obama does not run with scissors.

daddy

And if we're lucky he'll be able to continue his world tour to Islamic countries which engage in mandatory">http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/medical_notes/241221.stm">mandatory female genital mutilation, where he can continue to criticize America for not giving the vote to women until 1920.

Pagar

Maybee, You're probably right! The absolute last thing I would want to do is to try to find something that Obama deserves praise for.

hit and run

Wait though. Here's the http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/11/its_time_obama_apologize_to_19.html>AT blog entry with that quote.

No, he's just stunningly, incomprehensibly ignorant. He has no idea what he's talking about beyond what he's been told, what's conventional leftist wisdom. Think of all the crap lefties say about the US, and imagine what you would think of this country if you believed it was true. That's Obama.

I doubt he's had a meaningful conversation with anyone who wasn't a committed Marxist.

I can't imagine how the time he spent overseas as a child failed to penetrate the idiocy, except that he probably spent that time isolated from the average Indonesian. We know his life in Hawaii was relatively comfortable -- bank-president parents, prep school, etc. -- was his stepfather similarly wealthy?

anduril

Thanks, hit. I usually link sources, as you know. There was no real source at AT, as you noted. My wife and I just got back from our walk and I was thinking, y'know, in fairness you really should find the source, even if it means wading through his teleprompter's B.S. You saved me the trouble.

2nd Circuit to Civil Rights Lawyer Lynne Stewart: Go Directly to Jail
ABA Journal via WSJ ^ | 11/17/09 | Debra Cassens Weiss

2nd Circuit to Civil Rights Lawyer Lynne Stewart: Go Directly to Jail

A federal appeals court says bail for civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart should be revoked and she should begin serving her sentence “forthwith” for passing messages from an imprisoned terrorist to his followers.

The New York City-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed Stewart’s conviction in an opinion (PDF) released today, rejecting her argument that the First Amendment protected her release of statements by an imprisoned sheik.

Stewart was convicted in 2005 of providing material support to terrorists by passing messages from Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman to his followers. The material support statute “is neither unconstitutionally vague as applied nor a ‘logical absurdity,' as Stewart asserts,” the appeals court said.

"We also reject Stewart's claims that her purported attempt to serve as a ‘zealous advocate’ for her client provides her with immunity from the convictions.”

Absolutely. I never doubted the quote was out there...but I do admit preferring to go off half-cocked with full back-up in place.

Jim Ryan

Leftists are torn schizophrenically between idolizing the swarthier races as noble savages and pitying them as genetically lowly. The leftist at once believes that non-white men must by dint of their not being contaminated by the odious Western tradition treat their women well and that non-white men are excused from treating their women poorly because they are congenitally incapable of doing otherwise.

Once you relinquish the notion of the human individual who is the subject of rights to liberty and responsibilities to respect others' liberty, and you start seeing things in terms of a historical progression to fulfillment of the leftist dream of state, things get a bit nutty. Once you stop seeing individuals and see only groups melting into the state, things get weird. Races become mere brute material for use by the grinding forces of history. Moral judgments become possible only insofar as they are useful in promoting the statist goal. This is why the leftist position is to default to the view that the non-white races are noble savages superior to whites, because the propagation of this view helps to fight against the Western tradition. When it turns out that they are not noble savages, the leftist shrugs his shoulders as if he never really expected otherwise.

anduril

What got me thinking was the picture of Obama's crotch salute--turned out that he was simply the first to bring his hand down. And I recalled that AT got burned bad, recently, on something else (I forget off hand). They normally source their stuff, but I began having second thoughts...

Never underestimate The One.

Seriously, you have to treat them right or the claws come out - and not just when they "periodically" get depressed.

E. Nigma

hit and run

Looking at the http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2009/11/obama-china-townhall-text.html>transcript from the townhall,we see in context that Obama was asked this question by a student:

I want to know, what will your government do to build a diversified world with different cultures? What would you do to respect the different cultures and histories of other countries? And what kinds of cooperation we can conduct in the future?

And before Obama goes on about women griping about men with old fashioned ideas, he leads his answer off with..."Diversity? You want diversity? Well, take a good long look at . . . me! mmmm mmm mmm."

No,really...

This is an excellent point. The United States, one of our strengths is that we are a very diverse culture. We have people coming from all around the world. And so there's no one definition of what an American looks like. In my own family, I have a father who was from Kenya; I have a mother who was from Kansas, in the Midwest of the United States; my sister is half-Indonesian; she's married to a Chinese person from Canada. So when you see family gatherings in the Obama household, it looks like the United Nations. (Laughter.)

I'd probably laugh at him too.

Michelle Obama is a FASHION ICON

“We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said, in a statement provided to Huffington Post. “We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard.”…

Finally, as for the issue of whether the image is sexist, a source at Newsweek relays that the art and photo directors responsible for the cover (which was decided upon last Thursday) are both women.

Janet,

Great Cashill article and catch by TM. Before that post I'd always assumed Michelle had gone with him to Bali, based on the NYT account.

Just as an aside, I wonder what sort of laptop Barry took with him to Bali (per Draper) in 1992.

MikeS

Obama 'dithered' over the writing of "Dreams from My Father?"

maybe he borrowed algore's prototype laptop?

(more on Powerbooks) # In October 1992, IBM released its ThinkPad 700 laptop computer.

They were around, it seems. He could have had one. Purchased with his $40k advance? Or the $75k advance? Instead of paying off student loans.

hit and run

Could the University of Chicago have provided him one along with the office?

I wouldn't think so,but...

anduril

but Sue, see if you can check out prices. my recollection is that the cost of a laptop at that time would have made a serious dent in his advance. it's a question of escalating improbabilities. plus, of course, he dumped all his research on ayers (according to andersen's account), so what was he doing in bali with the laptop--typing up his free associating? that's as probable as anything else, i suppose.

anduril

i heard an interesting item on the radio this morning. seems that people's reaction to obamacare varies widely depending on what pollsters say to them (yeah, who'da thunk it). if they're told obamacare will save money, 52% are for it--only 52%, mind you. if they're told that obamacare means the cover will tell people what kind of coverage they'll get only 44% are for it. puzzle: who are these 44% and what is their average IQ? this tells me that behind the fluctuating numbers there are some very firm views.

Extraneus

Here's the original IBM laptop, the model 700, from 1992:

Sue

The original price of the Mac Powerbook 100 was $2500. (Oct. 1992)

The 1989 Mac Portable was $6,500 ($7,300 with hard drive).

Extraneus

Thinkpad 700 ran Windows 3.1 and cost $4,350.

Jane

The student loan thing is a joke. First of all how much did he have? I graduated in '87 with $40k in student loans from law school. I had no scholarships, but every single black person at BC Law (except one) had nearly a free ride. And Harvard had a lot more money. There was a huge push to matriculate blacks in the '80's. And in the '80's you could push back payment for a few years when you first started out. I paid mine off 13 years later in two lump sums after paying monthly payments for the prior years.

So my guess is he had very little in student loans - as did she. And paying them off was certainly not the priority they make it.

My guess is that if one looked hard enough they could find the actual numbers.

anduril

Ain't nobody lookin'. Least not from the MSM.

Sue

Can't you just hear him explaining to Michelle how if he just had that new laptop, he could get this book thing over with. Oh yeah, and a trip to Bali by himself. That's the ticket!!!

Sue

Someone should ask him what kind of laptop he had when he wrote the book. You don't forget your first laptop computer.

clarice

What sort of electrical set ups do you suppose they had at beach shacks on Bali?Or did he come with a hundred batteries?

anduril

i'm amazed at the cost of the powerbook, i thought they'd be even more expensive than the IBM. i have a reason for saying so: i got an advance for the purchase of a desktop around that time and bought a gateway for $2500. (yes, it had windoze 3.1 on it. a few years later i installed SuSE 5.2 on it. SUSE - note the change in caps - is now up to 11.2.)

i suppose it was doable, financially. still, i suspect between airfare, the laptop, living expenses and incidentals of all sorts, he would've needed every penny of the advance. for reasons unrelated to the finances, i'm quite convinced that cashill is onto the real story.

Sue

anduril,

I'm not saying he did have one, just saying it was available if he wanted one.

Sue

Someone should really ask him what kind of computer he used when he was in Bali. This Draper guy could have just made up the laptop business, using his own romantic images of a lean Obama on the beach writing this amazing piece of work when in actuality Obama could have been inside using one of those old word processors that you found in law offices in the 80s.

Porchlight

That's what I was thinking, Sue. Barry could claim that it must have been poetic license on Draper's part, which is certainly possible. Who knows, maybe he had a portable typewriter or was writing it out longhand on legal pads.

(Of course he was in reality writing nothing at all, since we now know he left w/o a manuscript and came back w/o one.)

But isn't it fun to speculate about historical word processing? Like back in the TANG memo days. :)

anduril

understood

caro

I have trouble envisioning him ever learning to type. It takes some practice.

I might be wrong on the price but I bought a Powerbook in 1995 and I think it was over $3000.
