Speaking of not looking healthy: Charlie Sheen sells out 2 nights at Radio City Music Hall.

I hope clarice or Glenn Reynolds or somebody can spread bgates's 2:18PM post far and wide.

Me too,me too. I'd love love love to "steal" it and put it on TheVIMH -- and then push it with Glenn to get him to link it (he would be more likely to link a post rather than a comment),but my batting average with Glenn is about what would put me just out of the top ten in MLB for a given season.

Mayhaps bgates can email him directly?

WASHINGTON - The U.S. prepared to a launch a missile attack on Libyan air defenses, but American ships and aircraft stationed in and around the Mediterranean Sea did not participate in initial French air missions Saturday, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the unfolding intervention. One official said the U.S. intends to limit its involvement—at least in the initial stages—to helping protect French and other air missions by taking out Libyan air defenses. An attack against those defenses with Navy sea-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles was planned for later Saturday, one official said.

I know USS Stout (DDG 55) is there, and has Tomahawks on board. I imagine those folks are bubbling over right about now.

Ignatz

Hit,
I emailed bgates's comment to Insty; we'll see.

clarice

You beat me. I was just bout to post it on the Tatler. bgates really, really really is my fave..

Ignatz

According to this article Libya hasn't upgraded it's Air defenses since we bombed them in '86.

Threadkiller

That explains why we are sending decommissioned ships to Libya, Ignatz.

Tom Maguire

There are no carriers. The nearest carrier was on the other side of the Suez canal when the UN voted on the resolution.

No one told the Navy to be ready for a no-fly zone. Why?

Hmm. Gates and the Pentagon has reportedly been opposed to this for weeks. On the one hand, a diligent SecDef might have pre-positioned a carrier just to increase the options available to the President. OTOH, we only have so many carriers, and a SecDef opposed to this exercise might have found other, seemingly better uses for them.

Janet

Here's the sorry s.o.b. Biden - "The vice president, known for speaking his mind and at times putting his foot in his mouth, said that Republicans who want to cut spending while at the same time cutting taxes for the wealthy are similar to rape apologists."

What an idiot.

Cecil Turner

According to this article Libya hasn't upgraded it's Air defenses since we bombed them in '86.

I suspect that's true. And only an idiot would man a radar screen on an SA-2 or 3 when Western jets are flying overhead with ARMs. However, they have a fairly significant number of systems, and even old stuff works.

Moreover, if you're going to bomb surface targets, you get down into the range of some of those short-ranged IR systems (especially the SA-9 and 13s). It looked to me like that's what shot down that MIG (27?) yesterday. In the hands of a skilled operator, they're pretty darn effective, and cheap enough that you can shoot lots of 'em. I doubt the Libyans have a bunch of skilled operators, but if they manage even to knock down a couple aircraft it'll make an interesting cost-benefit analysis.

Q'add'aff'i blames civilian deaths on French fighters in 3...2..

Staying on the french theme, the above photo of obama reminds me of the the refrain from fans in the Tour de France when Lance Armstrong would ride by...Doper!!

Danube of Thought

Unless I have lost my mind, Enterprise was in the Med a few weeks ago, had left for the Red Sea before this flap started, and about a week ago had returned, along with USS Kearsarge. Which means that within the past week someone has consciously determined that there was some place more important for her to be.

Just heard that US Tomahawks have now been fired.

alsjdfhgw98diklj

Danube of thought,

Please ask cousin Maggie to start a blog. Many people in the US are very interested to know what the US is doing to help in Japan and we would like to see the photos too.

Thaks,

Rocco

Every Libyan national I've seen interviewed so far has asked what took the US so long?

Rick Ballard

Interesting thought - the Libyan 'Will Tweet for Oil' mob is composed in part of deserting elements of Daffy's military. They took some armor and other weapons with them when they deserted.

How long until the French aces blow up the deserters' tanks (as well as some of Daffy's, to be sure). The deserters also have some AA batteries - will the French aces also score a few of those?

Lack of IFF could pose some interesting problems.

Rocco

And why is the follower of the free world announcing he won't send in ground troops? Evidently appeasing his base is more important than the lives at stake here.

Danube of Thought

"Please ask cousin Maggie to start a blog."

i'll ask her about it and let all know what she says. Could be tough to do as an Ensign aboard a busy deployed destroyer.

It would be nice if somebody would trot out the tape of Gates and that Pentagon spokesman telling us a week ago how we couldn't impose a no-fly zone because it would require an effort roughly equivalent to D-Day.

RichatUF

Or how many of the deserting elements are false defectors?

This all has that "Desert Fox" feel to it.

Tulsa Jack

Obama is an incompetent, indecisive, ignorant, cowardly fool, which makes him, as U.S. commander-in-chief, extremely dangerous. Who knows when this pathetic poseur will suddenly panic, and start lashing out to prove his manhood?

In 2008, with no qualifications whatsoever, no achievement, and no knowledge of his personal record, this "Chicago thug" (Bill Clinton), the Democrat Party, and the leftard media conned a majority of white Americans into voting for the Kenyan's black skin.

After two years of embarrassment and abject failure, some of the people that Banana Boy fooled -- though by no means all -- are beginning to realize that directing the world's super-power is not a game. As the Big Lie wears thin, they see our president and the head of our armed forces acting like a kindergartner; but having ignored reality and entrusted their lives to a fantasy figure of their imagination, fans of the ludicrous ongoing Obama-rama they so blithely worshiped have no business being surprised. If his styrofoam Greek temple didn't tip you off, guys, you're hopeless.

So now we commit American forces and American lives to "saving Libya." There has been no statement of America's interest, obvious as it is, because protecting the U.S. economy by stabilizing the global petroleum industry is against Obama's hate-America philosophy. I hear no clear military or political objective, either. No one knows who we are supporting, or where our action might lead -- certainly not the obviously incompetent and useless CIA, or the mad cow hack heading the state department. Here we are with just another Democrat spasm, a prescription for disaster like World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and Kosovo. These phonies make me sick.

RichatUF

DoT-

Didn't the Pentagon slow walk assets (and loaded the operation as heavily as they could) the various Serbian bombing campaigns?

Danube of Thought

I just don't recall, Richard.

Rick Ballard

Rich - Idle thoughts

1. Daffy was cheating on his OPEC quota.

2. World demand for oil has not recovered, even as new production continues to climb.

3. EUtopia depends upon the taxes from high oil prices in order to purchase spackle and paint for the cracking facade.

4. Venezuela, Russia, Brazil and Mexico will all collapse rather quickly should oil drop to its economic value as expressed in the price per BTU of NG.

5. The US is collecting a rather tidy sum in both fuel taxes and corporate income taxes as a result of the artificially high price for oil.

6. The Arab League branch of OPEC is acting as enforce against Daffy for his cheating heart - and hands and mind etc.

7. US dependence upon Persian Gulf oil is at its lowest in 50 years due to Canadian production. We could cut off purchases from the KSA and replace them from other sources without batting an eye.

Emperor BOzo the Moronic is not acting in the interest of the US - he's acting in the interest of the Socialist Internationale.

Jane

So who gets to name the mission?

Odyssey Dome?

WTF?

centralcal

I thought the same thing, Jane.

Ann

Jane:

It is Odyssey Dawn and someone tweeted that it sounds like a hooker...I agree.

So has Emperor Bozo promised a withdrawal date yet?

I can't believe he has committed us to war and we are not in charge. The French can't handle the shanty towns of muslims setting cars on fire. Ditto WTF.

Rob Crawford

Lack of IFF could pose some interesting problems.

The rebels are being encouraged to drive their tanks with the turrets facing rear, as the French are used to their own tanks being in that configuration.

centralcal

Tweet: @markknoller It was on this date in 2003, that Pres Bush launched attack on the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.

Hhhmmmm.

Rob Crawford

So who gets to name the mission?

Odyssey Dome?

From what I understand, it's supposed to be done by a random selection of two words. The mission names are SUPPOSED to be gibberish, but all-too-often a PR expert gets their thumb on them.

The reason they're supposed to be gibberish is to keep the name from including any valuable information.

If you like, look on the lack of a PR-focused name as another sign of how much attention the Obama administration has shown this, and how much they expect the press to show it.

centralcal

So, tell me again who is President? Dumb Bastard or Cankles?

RichatUF

DoT found what I was looking for:

"...the army insisted on beefing up Task Force Hawk, as it came to be called, with a dozen seventy-ton Abrams tanks and forty-two Bradley fighting vehicles. To support the Apaches, the Army added thirty-seven other helicopters-Blackhawks and Chinooks. A larger, heavier force took longer to assemble, longer to deploy, and was more difficult to support. In all, protecting and sustaining a mere twenty four attack helicopters ended up requiring 6,200 troops and 26,000 tons of equipment, to include 190 containers of ammunition and enough spare parts to support twice the number of aircraft actually deployed..." (Bacevich, American Empire, p.189; qtd in Lowery, Legacy, notes #166, p.431)

Porchlight

@markknoller It was on this date in 2003, that Pres Bush launched attack on the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.

President Bush launched attack? I guess I would have said that US Armed Forces launched attack, but what do I know.

RichatUF

Rick-

I hadn't thought about that. I figured that the French would love to displace BP and Eni from Libya.

Rick Ballard

Rich,

BP and ENI are more concerned about keeping the price up at the moment. ENI has the Kazakh field heading slowly towards full production and BP still has Thunder Horse on a very tight rein.

I don't doubt that France would like to have Total replace BP and ENI but the main thing is not to let the price of oil drop back to where it should be on a supply/demand basis. EUtopia would sink like Atlantis should that happen.

I'm just cynical and jaded enough where Obama is concerned to believe he procrastinated long enough for the country to have their mind on basketball and his brackets and maybe not notice the Libya situation. Sworn opponents of the Deadly Duck who deserted from his army in a desperate attempt to gain freedom, liberty and quite a bit of oil. The oil is obviously of tertiary concern and funds from its sale will be used only for the the betterment of the Libyan people.

And establishing the world wide Caliphate, of course.
