Old Lurker

My mother always claimed it was not the drinking that caused hangovers, but the stopping.

Charlie (Colorado)

I know there is a lesson there.

Denial is not a river in Mesopotamia?

Her family believes that Amy Winehouse died of alcohol withdrawal.

So why didn't they bring her some?

Since this thread, is about denial, Cain's latest comments, seems to have ignored the nature of his new friends at the ADAMS center.

when everyone around her said she was drinking massive amounts of alcohol and she stumbled off stage incoherent at her last gig, and apparently she purchased ketamine, coke, and some other goodies I find this very hard to believe.

It is as if all of the major institutions in the U.K. are losing credibility and collapsing.

I suppose it's possible that alcohol withdrawal might have been the proximate cause of death. But she was ingesting unbelievable amounts of drugs and booze, so absent major intervention, some combination of those things was going to kill her. At some point the train just can't stop.

Mr. Winehouse and Joseph Jackson should start a record label together.

Death from alcohol withdrawal is possible, and there were no drugs or paraphernalia near her body.

Let's wait for an expert to weigh in on this.

Where's hit?

Who is or was Amy Winehouse?

Thomas Collins

Who knows what caused her death (see Mel's post). She clearly dissipated herself. To me, when I try to be rational, I say to myself that a wonderful talent dissipating himself or herself should cause no more or less sadness than any other child of God dissipating himself or herself. However, I must admit that her death evoked an especially wistful feeling in me. She is one of the few entertainers or athletes whose skill evoked awe in me. When I heard of her death, the only other three I could think of that evoked similar awe in me were Sandy Koufax pitching, Frank Sinatra singing and Jim Brown rushing.

Funny, when Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix died, each at age 27, I thought they were old. When Elvis died at 42, i thought he was ancient. Now I think 42 is young.

Funny how that works, Peter:)

For many of us the saying "There but for the grace of God go I..." could apply.

Possible to die of alcohol withdrawal?!?!?! Dang! I gotta go...

For many of us the saying "There but for the grace of God go I..." could apply.

Amen. I joke about moving out of Austin "just in time" or I'd be in jail/rehab or some combo thereof...but it is no joke. There is nothing cool or fun about that lifestyle.
I'll be my little Bible thumper self & say that someone needed to introduce Amy to Jesus. She couldn't quit using, but God would have done it for her if she'd have let Him.

I worked in an ICU in the late 70s and yes people can die from the DTs.It is not a nice death

Hi Jean!

Belarus Bytes

Apparently we could have won the Cold War much sooner if we had just taken out all of the vodka factories in the Soviet Union.

The Lesson: If you try hard enough for long enough, you will eventually succeed in killing yourself.

JM Hanes

Per the article:

"Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death," says the source.
Going cold turkey can certainly be fatal, but there's nothing "eventual" about it. It seems pretty clear that the family is not talking about the medical effects of sudden withdrawal.
"Mitch [her father] said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."
Things don't look better when you first sober up. You finally have to face down your demons and face up to what you've become and the things you may have done. The sun doesn't come out till you're a lot further down a torturous road.

JM Hanes

LOL, Belarus!

The DT's are the result typically of withdrawal for some period of time, usually cold turkey. They start with the shakes and progress from there, I believe.

From all the reports she was still using and her friends and family were terribly concerned.

She was also reported to have had seizures in the past. The woman had demons that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Just to give an example, a guy I knew reasonably well died suddenly and mysteriously a few years ago. It devastated his family, but there was something fishy. They said it was a one car accident somewhere out in the boonies, but I got curious and checked everything up to Idaho and there were no one car accidents on the day reported.

A couple of years ago I mentioned it to a cop friend who volunteered that he knew the case and that it was an OD. Very wealthy family, and they bought silence. Right here in good ole Los Angeles.

There's a reason I'm cynical. But I am an optimistic cynic.

Don't give up drinking just yet.

This just got elected one of DC's Fifty Most Beautiful People.

Here is some of the competition -

(that is beautiful Mikulski schnoozeling Hillary's chest)

Carp Janet,

I have to be sober for the next 12 hours:(

Did Henry make the list?

or Dick?

Hey Barry, the napkin goes on your lap.

He looks baked.

I'll give him his shutter eye. Knowing his restaurant habits though, I'd bleach the bottle.

That's an old picture of Obama. The first time I posted it, we joked that he needed Michelle's strong arms to help him open the bottle! That one & the Mikulski one always crack me up.
The FLOTUS has too many to mention...holding a giant yam, a possible giant yam under her dress, thong underwear, backwards shirts, MC Hammer pants,...

I need Ann to bring me some new material!

Melinda Romanoff

That has nothing to do with why I want to bleach the bottle. Go wash your hands.

Whats the difference between Amy Winehouse and an F-22 Fighter Pilot?

The Pilot has more toxins in his blood.

Dave (in MA)

Did anyone have Hideki Irabu in the death pool?

Close enough to shiver.

I'd bet status epilepticus from the tremulous delirium. I am very close to someone whose spouse checked out that way.
