To be charitable, Alter must've been drinking heavily when throwing out the challenge. Wehner does a good job of responding to it but I'm sure most posters here could've hit a home-run off of Alter's softball lob.

Clarice

Don Surber also did a good job wrapping the bat around Alter's head.

I wish hit and bgates were hired by the rNC to do a video of the manifest b.s. of the Won.

"I'm sure most posters here could've hit a home-run off of Alter's softball lob."

Looks more like T-ball to me. Other than that . . .

If it were me I would have saved the "More On" joke for the 'Obama On the Economy' thread.

Of course if it were just me I probably wouldn't have even gotten it yet.

(I had to get up off the floor to type this.)

Gmax

I think the commenters on Alter piece kicked the living crap out of him so much that it looked like fun to the conservative pundits who then joined in the fun...

Ignatz

Alter asks,

“Tell me again why Barack Obama has been such a bad president?”

and Wehner wrote an excellent description of how Barry has become such a failure but never answers Alter's question.
Why he is such a failure is because he is a rigid, condescending, far-left ideologue who will not accept that his insipid, threadbare, lefty ideas have failed, just like his obtuse, cheer-leading lap dog, Alter.

DebinNC

From Mel's link:
............................................
In a rare expression of direct democracy that invoked a 100-year-old state law, all 200 people present got to vote, and resoundingly overturned the township's plan to build a new $1.5 million civic office."We directed an out-of-control government to listen to the people," said Debra Holscher, the campaign's leader, who kicked off the insurrection by scribbling out a petition and getting 17 people to sign it at the town's annual meeting in April.
.............................................
Kudos, Debra Holscher, 54 yr-old retired professor of occupational therapy, for "railing" against government waste.

Cecil Turner

And it's not like they weren't warned. The inefficient redistributionist approach to stimulus was called out before it even got voted on. And when it (unexpectedly!) didn't work, they act as if it was inevitable (and pretend the famous graph with the simplistic algorithm for a <8% unemployment rate doesn't exist).

But the most impressive graph is the one of the lefties' perfectly flat learning curve.

peter

OT-I agree with poster number 3 at LUN.

Remember this, when Zero gets around to another speech and starts in about the need for infrastructure spending. Really now. And just how much of the 850 Billion stimulus bill was infrastructure spending. A mere 7%. Sorry buddy you spend the groceries and half the rent, you dont get to point to something you want more now.

Lessee here - per capita GDP as of Q4 08 (closest to the '09 Super Bowl) was $42,118, thirty months later it was $42,469 for an annualized growth rate of .33% versus a normal rate of 3%. A normal growth rate would have put per capita GDP at $46,023 by the '12 Super Bowl so the Blightworker needs a 16.8% annualized rate of increase over the next two quarters in order to keep his job.

My bet is that he misses by about 16.4%.

Irene Update:

Brother John in Bettie North Carolina says the eye passed over and it lasted an unusual 2 hours or so,indicating that the storm was slow moving. Says that he decided toleavethe goats in their pen, but that during the eye he ran out to check on them and the surge had put about 7 inches into their pen and that they were scared, so he hauled them into the house along with the rest of the menagerie.

The goats are cool in that they think they are dogs and run around with the dogs in the brackish water out back in the sound when John is clam digging etc.

Said he has a generator and that allpoweris off but his cellphone workedgreatwhen I called. He saidthat when the phone wen toff at 5 am this morn, what with all the dark and the animals in the bedroom clustered around, that he went into the hall and found instead he had walked into the closet. Ha!

When I called about an hour back he said the wind was blowing a sustained 80 MPH or so and it was really shaking the house, but everything was basically holding. Says he has 1 big leak from the ceiling and a strong leak from a door since the wind is blowing sideways.

The water out front in the inlet is usually not very deep for a few hundred yards out until you get out in the channel, but he says looking out it looked just like the ocean today with huge waves crashing into his property and rushing up under the house. He is about 40 feet back from the waters edge. So so far a thumbs up and "a Mullet Blow."

Off to work. Bye.

JiB,

Thanks for the reading recommendation. Looks interesting.

I read a column this morning by Fr. James V. Schall S.J. on the fragility and instability of Islam this morning. LUN. In the context of the unrest in the Middle East I think it is one more very interesting data point.

The data is telling us that the Islamists are winning the political contests, and yet Schall thinks that the faith is more brittle than ever. I have a feeling we're going to find out a lot about the future state of global affairs in the next year or so.

With all that is going on in the world and all of the just plain weirdness, one has to wonder what is going on.

More on the Lacey Act, which was amended in 2009 to apply to wood:

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2011/08/cross-the-border-lose-your-bentley-the-lacey-act-applies-to-automobiles-too/

The Lacey Act effectively permits wooden musical instruments to be seized indefinitely, without compensation, and places the burden of proof on the owner, not the government. Do you own an $11,000 2011 Gibson Eric Clapton Edition Les Paul? Want to take it to Canada and back? You’d better be prepared to document the source of all materials to the government’s satisfaction upon your return, or you could lose it indefinitely. If you thinking documenting that is tough, what if you’re ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons returning from an overseas tour with your real 1959 sunburst Les Paul, for which you’ve already turned down at least one $5,000,000 offer? Good luck documenting the wood from a fifty-two-year-old guitar.

Very few TTAC readers travel with guitars, particularly across the country’s borders, so I don’t expect this to worry you personally. If, on the other hand, you want to drive across the Canadian or Mexican border in your own car — or even a rental — consider this: The same law that allows the Feds to raid American manufacturers and seize the possessions of Americans without compensation applies to cars, too.

Simply possessing the timber product can make you a felon, regardless of whether or not you were involved in the harvesting, were the original importer, or had received any information regarding the source of the timber product.
macphisto

in the interests of fairness, Gibson and its president are widely disliked among guitar players nowadays. when Henry (i can't spell his last name, sorry) first took over Gibson he brought it back from the abyss, when Norlin had run it into the ground in the 70s and 80s, but in recent years the company has made a lot of questionable product and business decisions, gone heavily into debt, optioned the rights to their trademarks to LaSalle Bank in exchange for lines of credit, had some fairly serious quality-control problems, and been heavily criticized for focusing on the expensive collector-guitar market--the $30,000 Jimmy Page replica Les Pauls and such--rather than on instruments regular folks can afford to play. scuttlebutt has it that he's rather a tyrant, impossible to work with, goes through subordinates like i go through Coca-Cola, and doesn't take advice. a lot of guitar players HATE Henry with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns.

but from everything i can find about the case--or more properly cases, one of which has the delightful title US vs. Ebony Woods--they turn on utterly minor technicalities. Ebony Woods has been in settlement talks for two years.

Natural Security.

To extend the Irene causing jobs meme breaking enough windows to drive wide fallacies through metaphor I'd like to propose the Federal Government as Irene model.

The Eye is the District of Columbia. Winds, driven mad by Maria and gorged on hot tropical taxes, wreak destruction, esp broken windows, in all directions. The eyewall is made up of tangled journalists and the vacuum at the center of it all exceeds all previously measured values.

Extraneus

Thanks for that comment, macphisto. I didn't know about that. I do know that nobody who could afford an American Les Paul, ES-175 or ES-330, would buy a Japanese Epiphone version. Of all the guitars made in Korea, Japan or China, some of which are excellent and have been produced offshore for decades (I recently checked out a Chinese Gretsch that was perfect in every way you could see), American made guitars are still the standard except for some Spanish-made classicals. Same with Fender.

How many other American manufacturing companies make products that are still far and away considered the best in the world?

the Lacey Act, which was amended in 2009

Hmmmm, the timing is perfect to let El JEFe come down hard on people who don't want to pony up campaign contributions, no? I'd be willing to bet the usual herd of RINOs were on board for that as well. Hmmm, looks like it was snuck in as part of a farm bill; since I don't recall anybody from the party of stoopid making a big stink about it, looks like they got rolled again. I believe the amendment was in 2008 although maybe somebody has a better source than what I found through Bing.

Janet

Our local news just did a "shout out" to the wonderful actions of mayor Bloomberg & the DHS for hurricane Irene preparedness.??? Is it THAT bad up there?? The hype all seems kinda phony....

macphisto

my previous comments shouldn't be taken as a condemnation of Gibson's instruments. indeed, much of the animus towards Henry that i've seen among players stems from the feeling that he's harmed the company and the quality of the instruments by poor management in recent years. and i would be willing to buy the idea of investigating illegal use of endangered woods. but ordering the company not to ship any product from their production facility? that's clearly an attempt to harm, not an atttempt to investigate, and i can't imagine that a District Court in Tennessee would uphold that.

(2nd try) ...
I have a 1963 Gibson ES335 that is probably the best electric guitar in the world. It received some water damage in a fire a few years back and I had it refinished by an original Gibson guy who stayed in Kalamazoo when Gibson moved (labor issues apparently). He refinished guitars as a side gig but also worked at the original Gibson factory for Heritage guitars. Founded in 1985 by former Gibson employees at the site of the original Gibson factory.

Janet

Irene is a category 1 hurricane.

Category 1 Hurricane:

Winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Storm surge generally 4-5 ft above normal. No real damage to building structures.

Obama takes charge at hurricane command center.

Janet

He is taking charge!...off the bike & into the big command chair.

Extraneus

Nice, boris. Such a unique sound. A 1963 ES-335 is something to put in your will. What's that thing worth these days?

Jack is Back!

He was told that if he shows up in that chair that there is a 50/50 possibility that the 'cane can be downgraded, something he is good at, and he can claim credit for losing only Quoge but not Southampton.

rse

When we stayed for Dennis back in 2005 my husband and son took bikes out on Hwy 98 if you know your panhandle routes and let the winds propel the bikes along. One of the few times either ever wore a bike helmet.

Red went with me to the grocery store and still remembers all those men with their carts full of beer.

I still remember her asking me if she could go to a "real" hurricane party. Yes, dear, but not beachfront. Of course she and her father were standing on a walkover the next day when it started to fail.

boris

What's that thing worth these days?

Probably a few thou. The finish is completely restored but you can still tell it's been played. Years of Allman Brothers, Led Zepplin, Paul Butterfield, Savoy Brown, Dave Mason, Jimi, Eric and many more left their mark on the frets, pickups and other hardware. The tuners were replaced with grovers long ago.

boris

Ooops, can't forget the Doobies.

MarkO

I’m sitting with my ‘59 Gretsch Anniversary model, smoked green. Obama wasn’t even born. I think I’ll play “Forty Miles of Bad Road."

That is cool, boris. I think overall I prefer the Gibson sound to the Fender. Gretsch is pretty neat too. One time we were at a barn sale in SE MN and my friend found a Tennesseean (not sure of the year but it had the fake f-holes so maybe a '64?) which he bought for $13. I felt bad for the old guy who didn't know what he had. Another friend bought a Stickley chair for $35.

Clarice

Porch, I'd go in a minute if gj duty hadn't completely worn me out and played havoc with my schedule.

Porchlight

Wow, that is seriously embarrassing for Obama. You can see it in his face. I'm not saying Irene is nothing but to make a big fuss over "taking charge" when it's already been substantially downgraded from earlier predictions...not what he was told he was coming back for, that's for sure.

He can't help tripping over himself. He wanted to be the anti-Bush and now he just looks like a fool.
