ack, 2012.

Elliott

A generic Republican now holds a six-point advantage over President Obama in a hypothetical 2012 match-up for the week ending Sunday, October 2.

John Boehner is still ahead, then?

Ignatz

Chart of the CPI.
Worth noting that there is supposedly an 18 month or greater lag on inflationary reactions so the run up in inflation that began this year is presumably reaction to QEI from 2009 and QEII, which ended this June, hasn't even hit the register yet.

pagar

TC, I don't think that 01:06 LUN says what you want it to say.

I'm with Charlie. I remember cautiously explaining to my child that while he was expected to be respectful to his teachers and do the work. they were not necessarily the smartest people in the world and he'd just have to use his own head to figure things out.

Or the time I had to beg his first grade teacher to let him type his essays because handwriting was so hard for him (he was younger than the others and therefore his motor schools were't so hot) because he was writing stupid essays so avoid spending hours trying to write it out. She said he'd need to learn to write by hand to perform his work years later.and I slowly but firmly explained that she could trust my judgment, that there was no occupation on earth for which he would be suited that required or conceivably would ever require he learn Spencerian script.

They are training the kids to respond emotionally to issues involving the envmt because those habits of mind created before 14 are hard to unlearn.

The Dana Center at UT-Austin has the contract to prepare the professional development for the new national standards.

Most of the content will center around issues that can be use to illustrate racial, ethnic, or environmental injustices or alleged examples of oppression or exploitation. Kids will practically ooze at the need for social change. Much like today's college kids and recent graduates.

They got control over higher ed 1st. On the counter of you turned out OK, there are specific dates to the paradigm shifts.

What BO and Arne are doing is nationalizing the model and attempting to cut off all previous escape routes like the classic-'I'll just close the door and do what I know works and the kids need".

The K-12 teachers who know the subject and teach it well are in the most danger from this constitutional coup.

Melinda Romanoff

Ig-

That was a chart of the BoJ's overnight, uncollateralized interest rate. Much like the Fed's targeted "Fed Funds" rate.

NK-

The distinction that Chaco was trying to make was a philosophical one, in this instance, that Bernanke was trying to avert the start of a deflationary feedback loop from beginning. It stopped it, for now.

Your insistence on using excellent data to "prove" that QE2 caused inflation misses a few subtleties that tie directly into the point I was trying to make.

I'll pause here before launching in.

NK

MelR-- can't wait.

Charlie (Colorado)

August 2010-August 2011 CPI was 3.6 (memory) that is DOUBLE the Fed's CPI target rate-- that is REAL inflation.

Yeah, and all the people pushing this notion were saying it'd cause massive inflation. Are you really young enough you think 3.6 pct is massive?

Charlie (Colorado)

Hey. Were you the kid?

No, but I'd like to meet his "friend".

Charlie (Colorado)

TC, those BNA articles are asking for login information.

Charlie (Colorado)

QEII as a Stimulus!?

Wouldn't this argument be more effective if I'd have said anything about QEII being a stimulus?

Charlie (Colorado)

conceivably would ever require he learn Spencerian script.

It is kinda cool, though.

NK

Ig-- Many thanks for the CPI chart;

MelR-- please reference your inflation observations to the CPI record in Ig's chart;

Charlie-- at the start of QEII CPI was about 1.5% year on year; by August 2011 the annual CPI rate had doubled to 3.8%. I never used the word "massive" I said we now have REAL inflation, and frankly DOUBLING the rate of inflation in 12 months is REAL and real scary. Will that continue? we'll see, if you're an optomist you have to believe Ben is a supergenius and the Fed cut off QE just in time so that collapsing commodity prices and a rising Dollar will head off the inflation spiral caused by the 2010 debased Dollar. I hope the optomists are right, I lived through 1970s StagFlation-- Ugh.

Clarice

He has in time developed an even "neater" architectural style of writing that is gorgeous, not that he still needs it for his work, Chaco.

CNN, at the bottom of the cable ratings for some time, keeps assuring that they will stay there. They just hired David Frum as a "conservative" political analyst. Oh, yeah, he has quite the conservative following. /sarc

Melinda Romanoff

QE1 and QE2, for different reasons, were directed specifically at the Primary Dealer system because, as money center banks, this would be the most efficient mechanism to replace the wealth destruction that had already occurred. The hope was that this injection would foster lending. Between the fraud and the greed at those institutions, neither would happen. Nor will it.

Let's walk through what happened to the flow of QE1+2 to see where the money actually went. First and foremost, the restoration of the Wall Street pay model, signing bonus (cash), salary (mostly deferred stock), and bonus (cash and deferred stock) all restored after TARP supposedly capped all that. Yes, I left out the granting of stock options, which is more complicated than it is to the story. Secondly, the lending that DID go on was under most people's radar, except to the TBTF banks. The lent it to their trading customers, their client base hedge funds, in exchange for their commissions. "Just so you only trade with us.".

This is where the distinction between stimulus by the Fed and the "hot money" trade arises, and it's an important distinction.

More in a bit.

DoT:
A very satisfactory -24 at Raz today.

The number is indeed satisfactory. But...

To be honest, I don't often read the summary he puts out with his daily poll, preferring just to take the numbers and . . . have my way with them.  But this in the summary caught my eye before I got to the numbers:

Only once, on August 31 of this year, has this president had a lower Approval Index rating.

This is the second time I've found the summary missing a prior date/rating.  The reason this one exasperates me is that Ras missed August 23 -- the day Obama hit minus 26, the lowest rating . . . evah!

Oh well.

NK

Charlie said at 12:48: "It's a lot easier to see QE2 as an attempt to prevent DEflation by increasing the money supply to counter dropping velocity."
That in effect was the Stimulus! justification the Fed gave for adopting QEII -- . Never happened -- instead the Stag worsened into a double dip (primarily because of Obama's hideous fiscal and regulatory policies) and the rate of CPI doubled. So is Ben a hero because we have StagFlation instead of Deflation?

Porchlight

Clarice,

I actually have the opposite complaint - that they don't teach enough penmanship. My daughter finds writing uncomfortable because she has a hard time holding the pencil. She also really, really wants to learn cursive. And she wants to be a waitress when she grows up so she will actually use it. ;)

Mel,
Weren't they also required to raise their capital limits and aren't they better capitalized now than then?
I don't happen to think the government or the Fed should be in the business of recapitalizing banks but that's beside the point for the moment.

Thomas Collins

Sorry, pagar and CHACO. I'll try to find a way around the subscription wall (I prefer not to do big pasting of stuff in the main thread area because I know that folks who aren't interested in the topic don't want to go through long paste jobs).

NK

MelR-- that cynical view of why money center banks aren't lending is waaaay too convenient. The ultimate reason for weak loan creation is there is no loan demand. The economy is dead- no business start ups no small business expansion etc etc because of the Obama/Dems' hideous fiscal and regulatory policies. The money center banks are like the rest of us, treading water hoping that the DC insane war on job creation ends.

Ignatz

--"It's a lot easier to see QE2 as an attempt to prevent DEflation by increasing the money supply to counter dropping velocity."
That in effect was the Stimulus!--

Believers in the Phillips curve, which includes just about everyone who is not a supply sider/Austrian/classical economist hold that inflation/growth and deflation/contraction are inseparable, so they see an expanding money supply as both battling inflation and stimulative because growth causes inflation.
The whole subject suffers from stupid theory and worse terminology.

So. About Dick Durbin's rant about BoA charging $5 a month for customers using a debit card...

I notice that Citi announced changes to its fees today. Now,they don't appear to be charging directly for debit card use,and the spokesperson explicitly says this in the article (at CNN,on b-berry can't link) - that they chose not to do that because their customers didn't want it.

But they are raising fees and increasing minimum account balances to lower or avoid those fees, and the timing is undoubtedly related to the Durbin Amendment going into effect. In some ways you might say they are trying to obscure the connection.

Which is perhaps unsurprising. Citigroup Inc is the third largest contributor to Dick Durbin's campaign committee.

Also not surprising will be Dick Durbin's silence about Citi as compared to his ravings about BoA . . . who is number 58 on the list of donors.

No offense, but that's a lot of "no"s in a row. The economy is most assuredly not dead, hiding maybe, but not dead. I'd be hiding in a trench too if the regulatory fusillade appears as promised by the Administration.

Clarice

More on the common era: (Wiki)
Common Era (sometimes Current Era or Christian Era),[1] abbreviated as CE, is an alternative designation for the calendar era originally introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in the 6th century, traditionally identified with Anno Domini (abbreviated AD).[2][3][4] Both systems are numerically equivalent, thus "2011 CE" corresponds with "AD 2011".

The expression "Common Era" can be found as early as 1708 in English,[5] and traced back to Latin usage among European Christians to 1615, as vulgaris aerae,[6] and to 1635 in English as Vulgar Era. At those times, the expressions were all used interchangeably with "Christian Era", and "vulgar" meant "not regal" rather than "crudely indecent". Use of the CE abbreviation was introduced by Jewish academics in the mid-19th century. Dates before the year 1 CE are indicated by the usage of BCE, short for "Before the Common Era". Since the later 20th century, usage of CE and BCE has been popularized in academic and scientific publications, and more generally by publishers emphasizing secularism or sensitivity to non-Christians.

MelR- the "Nos" are in large part my creative license. The economy is not dead "just mostly dead" -- but job creation is indeed dead. The data shows that "no one" is hiring -- I think we are agreed that the "dead" labor market is because of ObamaCare, EPA and other reg overreach. Loan demand --consumer and business-- while not dead is treading water at best because of weak demand as a knock on effect from the dead labor market. I think that is the reality, not corrupted money center bankers.

By applying their rental equivalence standard to owner occupied homes how do they avoid overstating inflation for the last several years?

They probably don't avoid it. Rents are well-known to be "sticky": They should have come down along with prices and interest rates, but they seem to take a few years to catch up, I suppose in part because of long-term leases. That might be reasonable for actual rental units, but as you say, attributing the same "rent" to owner-occupied housing is debatable. I don't know how big a deal that is in terms of measuring overall inflation. Owner-occupied housing is probably about 10% of the CPI.

I guess it feels sometimes like Repubs unnecessarily tearing down other Repubs. But it's part of the process. Sometimes other candidates are the only entities willing to air some of this stuff (bc the Dems are sitting on it for the general).

Some tactics are sneakier than others, that's for sure. Prime example was Rove's alleged dirty pool in SC against McCain in 2000.

Sue

Porch,

I don't believe Rove did that. And I expect them to beat up on each other. I just thought Perry would do better than he did deflecting the criticism.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Did you want us to do away with that and just anoint the frontrunner?

Party unity is for after the primary, not before.

Of course not. I just don't think it helps to have conservatives do the job that should be up to the dem opposition. Obama, not Romney, is the target. Lose sight of that and he wins, while our side is busy eating its own.

If there are other candidates preferred, tout them at the expense of Obama, not at the expense of one of our candidates.

I like Romney, but I'm not married to him. I like Herman Cain very much, and of course, if Palin got in, I would be behind her 100%, but I don't think that is license to badmouth any of the other candidates, not even Ron Paul.

I like Christie's delivery, but he has far more questionable views than any I've ever heard from Romney, yet the same who go after Romney, were salivating over Christie. Makes no sense to me.
