I hate to go off topic and be first but this was just too good not to post.

LUN on paying all that tuition money to officially be a "changemaker". And you thought I was kidding about civic engagement now being the primary focus of higher ed at noted schools.

sbw-if you are around, that book we talked about T'giving, The Defeat of the Mind, is a great complement to Revel's insights. I love used books especially if with shipping I am out less than $5. It's so cute when the do-gooder used book shop thanks me with an insert for saving the trees.

President Obama's slow ride down Gallup's daily presidential job approval index has finally passed below Jimmy Carter, earning Obama the worst job approval rating of any president at this stage of his term in modern political history.

Cain sounds like a CEO.

MayBee

We should let Obama go back to the most successful public office he's ever held, The Office Of President Elect of the United States. Then we can let someone else run the country.

peter

hilarious, Daddy.

MayBee

Whoever the next president is, I hope he asks to use Blair house a week early so he doesn't have to stay in a hotel.

steve

So... the allegations are not true and yet I'm thinking of dropping out of the race?

There's a disconnect there somewhere.

MarkO

Fagin Cain?

I'm reviewing the situation:
Can a fellow be a villain all his life?
All the trials and tribulation!
Better settle down and get myself a wife.

I will miss him.

MayBee

Steve- the allegations may well be true, but there's no disconnect.

Staying in the race is based on whether the family has a stomach for this, how fundraising is affected, and what the poll numbers are saying.

daddy

American Airlines files for Ch. 11 protection.

Tad scary from my perspective, especially considering the probable melt down of the Euro.

John Hansen

I think whether he stays in the race or not is has no bearing on whether any of the allegations are true. Just another pragmatic decision about whether it is worth fighting for or not.
Let me state I am not a Cain supporter. What I am shocked about is how unsubstantiated accusations were allowed to sink his campaign.
I mean when you examine each allegation, all but one give no evidence and no specifics ( locations, dates, etc. )
The one story that gives any details tells a logistically impossible tale.
1. Seated in a car ( both face forward ).
2. One hand under skirt.
3. One hand pushing face to crotch.
This is not a possible scenario. Try it. No matter how you try it you can't use your two hands to simultaneously do both actions. The story fails under the most obvious of failures, it is logistically not possible.
Cain's was allowed to be destroyed by unsubstantiated allegations because the establishment Republican people and Republican bloggers considered his campaign amateurish, his style unelectable. Therefore democratic operatives were given the green light to smear him and no defense was put up against charges which were really, really, weak.
Just proves to me that there is a professional political cadre out there that still won't allow someone from private life to get elected.
Since a professional politician is all we can elect, and none of them will ever take a CEO approach to cutting government, we are doomed to a slow death by the unending advance of government. Someday, you professional politician likers will apologize to the Tea Party people. You couldn't help yourself. You can't stand to let an amateur win.

The Office Of President Elect of the United States

Just when I had forgotten that sorry spectacle. How embarrassing. I bet even the diehard MSM Obama buttkissers cringe a little now when they see photos of that seal.

bolitha

I am very sorry for Herman Cain. I was very "big" for supporting him, but I do think he is now finished. It's not the affairs, if there were any, it's the cover up. I really do not see how he would have thought that all of this would not come out. Any Republican running against Obama should expect to have everything in that candidate's past to be revealed. Just think of all Obama's past that we know nothing about! Amazing.

Another new Enviro challenge filed against Shell Oil to prevent their Drilling in the Arctic.

You guys I think all know the playbook by now:

1) File the challenge in late November/December;

2) Court steps in and calls an open ended time out to investigate the new challenges;

3) Shell puts off drilling for another year due to Courtroom uncertainty and logistical costs;

4) Enviro's win, Industry loses, and all without the Enviro's spending a nickel of their own money, since the Legal Challenge is ostensibly for "The Public Good."

Samo, samo.

Tune in next week, same time, same station, for another exciting episode of Enviro's Suing Shell Oil.

Daddy, I just saw a note somewhere where Citibank has downgraded AMR's stock to worthless. No information about why Citibank thinks their stock has any value.

Clarice

Excellent, MayBee.

None of the charges against Cain have any substance to date, and I am furious that smart people like Richard Miniter are wrapping their white togas about them and running. I think the constant charges PLUS his less than stellar performance in interviews are making his nomination unlikely.

Old Lurker

Agreed, Clarice.

Delingpole on the Dennis Miller Show.

Decent segment. James made some good points contra Dennis, saying that as long as the EPA is still empowered, then the Economy killing AGW agenda is still alive and well and deadly.

My impression from catching part of Steyn was that Steyn is far from sold on Newt, whereas Dennis is now pretty strongly behind Newt due to Herman's meltdown.

Cain has been assessed and found wanting. It's unfortunate that sexual harassment charges and a mistress are pushing him out. Because that's not why he's not qulified to be President.

After a nationwide search...

Chelsea Clinton has been hired by NBC News.

Just six weeks ago, Clinton was appointed to the board of IAC/InterActiveCorp, the Internet media conglomerate controlled by Barry Diller. For her efforts, Clinton will be paid about $300,000 a year in cash and incentive stock awards.

Not bad for a 31-year-old in graduate school.

At about the same age as her mother when she turned spare change and pocket lint into $100K in cattle futures while the old man was telling Juanita to get some ice.

MarkO

I believe there is a general sentiment that Cain is dissembling. Not that there's anything wrong with it.

jimmyk

I don't get the morality involved.

News value is always relative to what we already know. Cain is relatively unknown, so everything we learn (or that is claimed) counts more. Newt enters the race with baggage, but that's all factored in already along with his record in politics.

If Obama were discovered to be having an affair, as long as it wasn't with a live boy or a dead woman, it wouldn't be that big because he's now being judged on his record. If it had been found out in 2008 he might have been toast (except for all the special MSM treatment he got).

-- Richard M. Nixon: 50 percent.

Newt's peccadilloes have been known for years while Cain's alleged ones all came to light in the last month.

Is that definitely LBJ in 1963? Seems doubtful since JFK wasn't shot til the end of the month. Are you sure that isn't LBJ in Nov 1967?

"I don't get the morality involved"

There is no longer any morality in politics. Unfortunately we the voters are left holding our noses and picking the -hopefully- least immoral of Immorals.

In Bambi's case however, the lovely MSM is sheltering his dirty bag of tricks while he spends us into oblivion.

Porchlight

Note JBJ. he went on to win 44 states against Goldwater.

Kind of an outlier election, but your point is taken.

Here's what I don't get - LBJ was never re-elected. A year before his victory over Goldwater, LBJ was vice president. So how does his 44% approval rating count in this matrix?

Perhaps his approval rating was 44% at the time of his swearing-in on November 22, 1963. But again, not very relevant in this context, nor predictive.

Melinda Romanoff

How do you like your stir fry?

Rick Ballard

Ignatz,

Johnson was at 42% in late November, 1967. The problem may be the offset dates in the Gallup toy. The toy uses days from inauguration, not actual similar dates.

Porchlight

I posted before I saw Iggy's 4:25 comment.

LBJ really shouldn't be on Gallup's list. No way to compare him fairly with the rest.

My assessment is that Cain must have had a few affairs during his lifetime, and his handlers were not adequately prepared for the bimbo eruptions, largely because they never expected him to be so successful. A shame really, because I think he is a decent guy. Unfortunately, even with a "non-politician" persona, preparation is necessary to get elected.

Appalled

Clinton cheated on his (J. Flowers), and everyone knew he lied about it. He still won. On the other hand, women loved him and they are repelled by Newt.

You have more information than even the MFM have. Where did you get it? But you're right when it comes to a morality play, Cain is no match for King Clenis and his his own Rosencrantz and Gilderstein (Carville and Begala). When you have a compliant, enabling and co-conspiritorial media in your corner there is no scandal or even a disqualification.

Cain is now more than qualified to get his own show on CNN.

Porchlight, I, also, think he didn't tell them. I think the appearance of his not telling the truth about things, and, also, his poor performances with domestic and foreign questions are going to prevent him from getting the nomination--agree with Clarice. But, I also think that he will quit the race because his fund raising will dry up.

Off the top, does anyone remember something from a few years back about finding some guys in Europe with an astonishing amount of unexplained cash on hand, either Mega Millions or Billions? Just thought I'd ask.

The LBJ 44% above was from November 1967. He didn't pull out of the election until after he had a fairly weak margin over McCarthy in the first primary and RFK jumped into the race.

On the other hand, women loved him and they are repelled by Newt.

Every time I saw Clinton on TV, I wanted to slap that arrogant sneer off his face. When I see Newt, I want to hug him as a big cuddly bear.

jimmyk

Or because he didn't tell them? If so, not cool to sandbag your people like that. It doesn't speak well to his executive ability either.

Assuming the story is true. Occam's razor might point to it being false, which both explains why he didn't tell them and why he thought he could run for president. It's easier to explain why the lady in question might be lying.

If I were a gambling man, I'd bet on the story being true (or essentially so), at even odds, but not at 4-to-1. Why do we believe her any more than Anita Hill (who I still believe was 100% lying).

From a link posted on TVNewser comes this about Cain:

As word comes that Republican presidential hopeful Herman Cain is "reassessing" his campaign, he has abruptly canceled a private dinner with New York's media elite planned for this Sunday.

Cain had reached out to New York Post columnist Cindy Adams to host a gathering at her Park Avenue apartment so that he could meet some of New York’s top journalists and politicians.

Among those on the guest list were Barbara Walters, Matt Lauer, Bill O'Reilly, Lesley Stahl, Senator Chuck Schumer and Greta Van Susteren who recently interviewed Cain and his family on Fox News.

Van Susteren's husband, lawyer John Coale, is a friend of Cain’s and serves as an advisor to him.

Adams told NY1 she received a call this morning from Coale after Cain asked him to cancel the dinner in case he drops out of the race.

Sara

Why do we believe her any more than Anita Hill (who I still believe was 100% lying).

Because it has nothing to do with infidelity or how he handled the questions. The Lefty meme is simple: Cain = one of those oversexed black men that no white woman is safe around. This is what blatant racism really looks like. They tried to attack his credentials and his intelligence by calling him "the pizza man," and that didn't work, so the next best thing, show him as a predator of white women.

rse

Thanks pagar.

The sad thing is most students do not want an education, they want credentials. Even the ones who want an education get a worldview instead without the ability to recognize the substitution or appreciate the difference.

I have said I could write a whole book just on the higher ed material I gathered figuring out K-12. It will be hard for parents and students who took out loans and thought they were avoiding the trendy "studies" areas to gain something solid and useful to discover what kind of conferences and recommendations the admin were simultaneously entering into on the true direction of higher ed. Very close to a theft by deception scenario. Primary defense would have to be ignorance and a claim to be more political than academic. That would be rather toxic to the rep as well. This game is about up.

Porchlight

Why do we believe her any more than Anita Hill (who I still believe was 100% lying).

I too believed that Anita Hill was 100% lying. But it was a point in Thomas' favor that no other women came forward. Whereas in Cain's, with multiple women making claims, I'm afraid it's looking more like a smoke, fire situation.

Rick Ballard

The Gallup initial polling for Johnson showed him at 78% for the period of Dec 5-10, 1963. Gallup's last polling for Kennedy showed him at 58% for the period of Nov 8-13, 1963.

The 44% is definitely from November '67 - on the way to LBJ's 'no mas' moment.

Yes, though they are not particularly credible with their own histories of stalking and lawsuits and bankruptcies, whereas the claim was that Anita Hill was credible because of her exemplary background.

Well the one that does is that he has been an unserious candidate who didn't trouble himself with gaining knowledge of the issues or forming positions he could defend. I'm more shocked at his presumptuousness in thinking he was qualified to be POTUS than I am with anything in his private-life background.

I think the 13-year affair thing has legs. I suspect so, anyway, and fear we'll find out via photos, love notes, etc., etc. if he doesn't get out of the race. My guess is he'll do so within the next 48 hours. My hope. Yes, Democrats have survived much worse, but we are not Democrats.

One of the other news stations here in the ATL just did a story on the "Cain accuser" and was not very complimentary to her at all...

That story about 'some' evictions? They had her magistrate court print out and it looked like a few pages of single spaced order after order after order.

If she was Herman's squeeze, wouldn't he have kept her in clover?

If she was a friend he was trying to help, wouldn't he try to find her a job or business partner and not keep her in clover? Looks to me like he was trying to help someone out and was a smart enough business man not to loan her any money... it looked like over 30 eviction notices on just the first page alone.

Plus the defamation suit which she was forced to write an apology letter and notify the clients that she was spreading the 'lies' to which she was forced to retract.

She accused the body builder of using 'drugs' and had a falling out with her and was sending their clients emails about how 'evil' she was. Bodybuilder sued and got more than a summary judgment (what most of the msm has reported) for her not showing in court. She was forced to write a letter to all the clients in the email retracting the claims. Irony of ironies, she was partnered with the apolla and they were working out of the MLK community center teaching 'spinning' classes.

IIRC, her employment history makes the bimbo from Chicago look down right stable.

I'd say Herman has a soft spot for sob stories and tries to help out damsels in distress. Anything else is innuendo.

Would you fly your 'mistress' all over the US spending money on her and yet let her be evicted from place after place after place? I notice she does not claim to have any cancelled checks or proof that Cain paid for any of her difficulties. Stinks to high heaven...

And the MLK center is all kinds of red flags as a locus for this particular smear.

(Another) Barbara

My impression from catching part of Steyn was that Steyn is far from sold on Newt

Well, that's a sweet way of putting it, daddy. I'd say that Steyn slashed Newt, burned 'im and salted the earth for miles around him.

Cain is insisting to Channel 2 that he is staying in the race.

He is still denying. He did not have a sexual relationship. She was a friend. Ed Buckley is representing her and has rep her before (on what?). He acknowledges knowing her for 13 years. Lin Wood stands by Cain.

White claims there were leaks and that she was threatened with the story breaking with or without her. So that is why she came forward and she 'can't imagine anyone wanting coming forward for all the problems it will cause.' Her body language sux.

I predict her ex business partner will come out and state that she is full of shit and the story is all in her head and that Cain got them together to try to start a business and that she never saw anything inappropriate- though not for want of the stalker's trying.

The local tea party is claiming that he has lost their support. Cause of how he handled the crisis. Never heard of the lady claimed as the head of the local tea party, though. Typical. A party with no head can be usurped by all sorts looking to claim the mantle.

Anyways that's the latest on the ground here and my 2 cents.

"Are you sure that isn't LBJ in Nov 1967?"

I mistakenly assumed it was 1963 (although that wouldn't make much sense), because I thought the list was intended to compare the incumbents' numbers a year before the election, and LBJ didn't run in 1968. But on reflection there's no reason not to include a guy who decided against running. So that must have been Truman in 1953, not 1947 (which wasn't really a re-election, just as LBJ wasn't in 1963).

And it must be LBJ in 1967, which makes the whole thing that much sweeter.

Craig Murray has been following the UK/Iran Mictoration Olympics for a while. Just found him. Former whistleblower. The Fox/Werritty/Gould connection has a certain stink.

http://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2011/11/matthew-gould-and-the-plot-to-attack-iran/

"I was particularly concerned by this because I knew slightly and liked Matthew Gould, from the time he wrote speeches for Robin Cook. I hoped there was nothing much in it. But then Gould’s name started to come up as professional journalists dug into the story, and reported Werritty’s funding by pro-Israeli lobby groups.

I decided that the best approach was for me to write to Matthew Gould. I did so, asking him when he had first met Werritty, how many times he had met him, and how many communications of every kind there had been between them. I received the reply that these questions would be answered in Gus O’Donnell’s report.

But Gus O’Donnell’s report in fact answered none of these questions. It only mentioned two meetings at which Fox, Gould and Werritty were all three present. It did not mention Gould-Werritty bilateral meetings and contacts at all. To an ex-Ambassador like me, there was also something very fishy about the two trilateral meetings O’Donnell did mention and his characterisation of them.

This led me to dig further, and I was shocked to find that O’Donnell was, at the most charitable interpretation, economical with the truth. In fact there were at least six Fox-Werritty-Gould meetings, not the two given by O’Donnell. Why did GOD lie? I now had no doubt that my informant had pointed me towards something very real and very important indeed."

I am very pleased to announce that this afternoon, Querida and I were happily married at Isla Negra, the summer home of the poet Pablo Neruda.

Neruda was one of the most contradictory individuals I have ever read of, but he wrote some pretty powerful stuff.

Querida and I shall be off now to Patagonia counting monster trout and the occasional salmon and climbing mountains and stuff.

Rocco

Climbing mountains indeed...congratulations!

Matt,

Best of wishes to both of you. Have an unforgettably wonderful honeymoon.

Well there's something 'awry' with this process, which I saw 4 years ago, going in
for 'beatings so morale improves' debates have served little function,

Congrats Matt.
