98% of the voters love Obama.
98% of the folks in state mental hospitals love Pelosi.
98% of what I hear from the main stream media is utter rubbish.
I think I'm starting to get my facts straight--that first one was a whopper!

Of course if the figure were 100%, that would still not affect the question whether religious institutions should be coerced by the state into providing it for them.

As Clarice has stated on another thread, all this is not the question. The real question is of religious freedom. I agree--I am SO tired of all of these people talking about the birth control pill.

And they said Romney was like Father Knows Best.

Sister Keehan is well paid and her group will make a lot if Obamacare isn't overruled:
"So let's get down to brass tacks. How much is Sister Keehan worth for such political interventions? The checkered Catholic hospitals Keehan represents as chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association stand to receive gobs and gobs of cash from the federal government if Obamacare holds up past 2012. Consequently, the members of the association are more than happy to pony up huge salaries to executives skilled at manipulating the Catholic electorate for Obama.
Keehan is worth $962,467 to them in total salary and benefits, according to the Schedule J (Form 990) 2010 document sent to me by CHA. Theoretically, this is paid to the nun's order, though CHA adds an intriguing caveat to its compensation figures:"

Posted by: A Casual Observation | February 17, 2012 at 08:31 PM
So, Clarice, what happens with a brokered convention? Do the "men in the smoke-filled room" pick a candidate or what?
Posted by: Not Sara | February 17, 2012 at 08:31 PM
Am Spec says if it weren't for the Tea Party the bishops would be square with Obama's overreaching HHS regs. I'm not sure of that, but if the Tea Party succeeds in putting some spine in the Bishops and the Republican party that would be a good thing. As Steyn says Obama's budget deficit projections are reaching to Gingrich's moon colony.

But, I thought all of you said that the Catholic Church would not back down for anything, and, now, Clarice, you are saying the Am Spec is saying the Tea Party is the reason the bishops are not backing down? That is really, really sad that they--the bishops--do not have more backbone than that--that they have to use the Tea Party for their resolve to not back down. That is pitiful.

The delegates selected by each state meet and hash it out. Those committed to each of the candidates by virtue of primary and caucus victories probably will vote for their guys in the first round but since no one has a majority which is why the convention will decide it will wheel and deal, and I suppose non candidates like Palin will have an opportunity to speak and try to garner support for one of those men or someone new.

Livid.
That's what I am---Livid.
Here I woke up in Summit, New Jersey this morning and thought I would wander the town looking at the tribute to their latest great dead cultural icon, Whitney Houston.
We're at The Summit Lodge, some place that back in the about 1868 was a barn, but they've since turned into a hotel. The company canceled the hotel contracts with Rahway and East Brunswick and Secaucus, so here I am, after landing at Newark at 2 am last night, waking up to a brand new New Jersey layover hotel in a new town--- Summit.
According to WiKI it was named Beacon Hill back in Revolutionary times, and a place where a huge light on a stick atop a big hill could send a beam 18 miles away to Geo Washington's troops that the Redcoats were on the move after him. After the War it became known as Turkey Hill, then later Summit Hill, and finally simply Summit. (Had an old girl-friend from this place 40 years back, but one of us was too intelligent to marry the other, so I'll not go into that.)
Anyhow, upon waking this morning and discovering that Rush Limbaugh's broadcast was like that offsetting Winston Churchill pudding--"without a theme", I turned him off and decided to stroll the town, and the theme that struck me was the appropriate respect that ought to be given by the State of New Jersey to her latest dead cultural icon, Whitney Houston.
Fixing to drown my Whitney sorrows, I asked the way to the best tavern in town, and was instructed by the concierge gals to exit the hotel and turn right down Springfield Avenue. This I did.
T'was a bright, sun shiny day, 50 degree's and gorgeous, when I began my walk at 2 local, 10 am Anchorage time.
Just up at the corner I came upon the Summit City Hall and Police Station building, and thank goodness they had the American Flag and New Jersey State Flag at half mast on their flagpole, respectfully honoring the culturally iconic dead crack addict. That was certainly good to see.
Next I continued my saunter down Springfield Street for a few blocks, where glancing to the right down Maple Street, I was appalled to see that the Flag outside the US Post Office was at Full Mast, not half mast. WTF?
This had my blood boiling, so I turned right on Maple and was able to notice that the next Flagpole beyond the Post Office was at Half Mast. (Whew!) This was reassuring, as shortly the large YMCA sign came into view, so I knew that that outfit was up to snuff on honoring the snuff addict; but then, even more shocking, I noticed I was wrong, and that the YMCA , just like the Post Office, had a recessed Flagpole with the Stars and Stripes, at Full, not Half Mast. What I had actually been seeing at Half Mast was the Flagpole in front of the next building down, the Summit Free Public Library. They, the Librarians, had had the courage and respectfulness to lower their flag to Half Mast in honor of their State's latest drugged out dead iconic crack addict, not the YMCA.
I just about pooped I was so angry. The Postal guys I could forgive because they are generally incompetent and crazy public employees, but the YMCA? What the hell is their excuse for not kowtowing to public pressure and Governor Christie's demands that they honor the suicidal gal that voluntarily spent many, many thousands of dollars snorting illegal, soul deadening drugs up her nose?
Livid. Did I say I was livid yet?
Well not hardly, because there, just across Maple Street from the Library was the Central Presbyterian Church, and those scumbags had a humongous Flagpole, with "Old Glory" raised to Full mast. Inconsiderate a-holes. Across Broad Street was the Lawton C Johnson Summit Middle School, and it had not 1 but 2 Flagpoles disrespectfully waving the Star Spangled banner at Full Mast. Bastards---Don't they care about promoting role models for our children? And if they won't get onboard and promote reverence for New Jersey's most infamous suicidal crack addict, then who will they promote as role models?
But it gets worse.
The Summit Volunteer First Aide Squad? Full Mast.
The ElderCare Facility? Full Mast.
The Broad Street Jeep Dealership? Full Mast.
And the most unkindest curt of all---the War memorial Park.
There, in that bucolic Elm Street park, surrounded by the Train Station and the Post Office and the Library and the Churches and Schools, and amidst monuments commemorating Summit's War Dead in the Revolutionary War, The Civil war, The First World War, The Second World War, The Korean War, and The Vietnam War, those disrespectful sunsuvbittches had the gaul to have raised the Flag of The United States of America to the top of the pole, and just below it, waving even higher than the Library's flag at half mast across the Street, waved the POW/MIA banner.
What an unpatriotic bunch of bastards are these Summit New Jerseyians. I hate 'em all. I was so livid that I asked a cop for a steer to a good drinking hole and he pointed me to The Beacon Hill Tavern.
Took me a couple hours to get out of my Patriotic funk, but after a couple pints and jabbering with the locals about their Revolutionary History, I felt a bit better. They seemed to be honest, decent folk, exceptionally well versed on local revolutionary history and George Washington and Thomas Paine and the Constitution and the requirements of citizens in a Constitutional republic, but what with their Police Station and City Hall and Library not fully participating in Governor Christie's program to honor their most famous recent dead illegal drug-abusing drug addict, can I depend on them to lower their flags to Half Mast when Snookie loses America's got Talent?
Geez. I just don't know anymore.

I'm trying to comprehend how anyone can seriously propose a brokered convention. That would mean, wouldn't it, that we'd have a nominee who had not participated in a debate, had not walked the streets asking for votes, had not sat for (and endured) interviews about his candidacy, and had not been vetted by both friends and enemies. I don't see it as remotely possible.
Posted by: (Another) Barbara | February 17, 2012 at 09:55 PM
And I forgot to add the most important consideration of all: had not received even one vote from the rank and file as their favored candidate.
