Sue

Sean Hannity interviews Paul Ryan today on his radio show. 4 pm ET.

Dave (in MA)

When the guys at Walter Reed were working on the Sage of Scranton in 1988, did they use an ice cream scoop?

sailor

Well, AliceH, someone is promoting the idea since it's all over the internet. It has always been known that operatives send "stuff" to Drudge to get an idea going. Now--I don't know whether it is Repubs or Dems doing this.

Ralph L

Well it was the school that gave us Woodrow Wilson
I went there four times longer than he did and probably learned half as much. It's amazing an editorial writer at the Grnsboro News & Buttwipe took them to task for it. The Administration is trying to separate the College from the few remaining ties with the Presbyterian Church. The first President, a Rev. married to my triple great aunt, was the f-i-l of Gens Stonewall Jackson and D H Hill and another rebel gen.

Danube of Thought

In my lifetime incumbents Truman and LBJ declined to run for an additional term for which they were eligible (both would have lost badly); Carter and GHWB were ousted.

FDR, Truman, LBJ, Nixon, Reagan and Clinton won as incumbents.

That's 6-4. In a lousy economy with a huge majority thinking the country is headed in the wrong direction, booting out an incumbent is not all that hard.

Sue

I had a crazy theory when I heard Palin said Obama should get rid of him but didn't want to say it. Someone here did so I can say it and not feel like a lone wolf. I think republicans got wind of Obama dumping Biden and figured if they told him to dump Biden he wouldn't be able to. So, not only am I Eyeore, I'm Sybil.

Strawman Cometh

Jeopardy! last night, broadcast here in Durham on the local ABC affiliate, featured more Prezzie political ads then I've ever seen. Each break had one, some two, from each candidate. They were all official (I approve of this..) ads, not from the PACs.

narciso

Both Truman and LBJ were serving out other terms at the time of their second term,

MarkO

She was not named after Sir Edmund Percival Hillary, who climbed Mt. Everest when Mrs. Clinton was about 7, unless by “after” you mean chronologically following Sir Edmund having the name.

The lie is so grand it's nearly Obamian.

Ranger

The funny thing is that all the gaffs that Biden is making are no worse than the stuff Obama way saying in 2008 ("Iv'e been to all but one, 57 of the states so far" for example). The difference is this time, people are noticing.

Obama is comfortable with Biden becaues Biden is more of a fool than he is himself.

sailor

But, Sue, Palin said also that she did not want O to do that because the Repubs would do better with Biden on the ticket.

Sue

Is that comment really meant for Sue or Sybil? Because Sue knew better but Sybil had to say it.

Sue

I think we can safely blame Obama for the shooting at the FRC. And I don't really need a reason, other than the tone of his campaign.

hit and run

Sue:
I think republicans got wind of Obama dumping Biden and figured if they told him to dump Biden he wouldn't be able to.

I wouldn't think it necessary for Repubs to have gotten wind of it. I think it's most sh*t-stirring to promote the idea that things are going so badly for Obama "people" are talking about him ditching Biden. But, yeah, by talking about it -- it kinda forces him to think twice before doing it. I'd say it's not that different than the Petreaus lie-mongering Obama did (that worked out swell, Hi Paul Ryan).

But we should probably up our game, a la Harry Reid.

"A source whom I trust and who is close to the thoughts of Obama's inner circle has reliably informed me that dumping Biden has been seriously considered."

(Don't tell anyone, but I consider bgates extremely close to the thoughts of Obama's inner circle - as evidenced by his parodies. So. My statement is "true".)

DrJ

daddy,

A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I Got A Gal...in Kalimazoo

You also have a guy here from Kalamazoo (raises hand!).

Sue

Hit,

It would probably freak Biden out if we could get someone to say that. ::grin::

Ranger

Well, this is an interesting new tac for the MFM:

Does every vote count? Why some Americans don’t think so

Why 90 million Americans won't vote in November

They could turn a too-close-to-call race into a landslide for President Obama— but by definition they probably won't.

So, basically, Obama won't win, but it's the "will of the people" that he should.

sailor

I think you are right, hit--the first part of your statement. With everyone talking about it, O is such a narcissist that he probably would never admit that he had made a mistake putting Biden on as VP in the first place. So, there O is--"caught between a rock and a hard place." what to do, what to do?

derwill

I think Sue might be right. Imagine Obama taking the political advice of that hick from Wasilla who thinks she can see Alaska from her house. There would be so many liberal heads exploding we'd all be drowning in brain matter.

Danube of Thought

Both Truman and LBJ were serving out other terms at the time of their second term,

But both had been elected to a full term on their own. Truman in 48 and LBJ in 64. Both could have run again but elected not to do so in light of the prospect of certain defeat. I see no reason to exclude them from a listing of incumbents who got treated to the boot-tip.

I have excluded Ford because he never won a term.

Sue

GWHB would have been re-elected without Ross Perot's presence.

NK

I think Ranger may have the best observation why Biden stays-- he's an idiot who makes Bam feel good about himself, and is no threat to Jar Jar or Moochelle. Hillary will make Bam crawl and is a threat to Jar Jar, that may keep Slow Joe on the ticket.

JM Hanes

I haven't caught up yet, so apologies if this is a repeat of anyone else's observations.

Rove's maps are not predictions. They are monthly snapshots of how things look according to existing polls -- which include upfront qualifiers about states where there has been virtually no recent polling. This month, for example, he noted that Texas is obviously not a "lean" Romney state; it's only pink because that's how the numbers he has in hand, to date, come out. In other words, Rove makes precisely the same kind of points about the unreliability of state polling, at this juncture, that folks at JOM make all the time.

I'd wager that showcasing his maps generates less money than the $$ FoxNews pays him for those mapping segments on Special Report. The pretense that Crossroads GPS is a grassroots advocacy outfit may be convenient for tax purposes, but the sum total of the contributions that come in from the general public probably look like a rounding error on their real spreadsheet. They raise the kind of funds that makes their existence possible by cultivating deep pocket donors, face to face, in private.

Sue

JMH,

I've tried that. It hasn't worked. But it's nice to see you read what he wrote too.

hrtshpdbox

Is Biden imploding by design, could he just be a step or two from saying "Gee, I don't feel so good", making for an easy path to the exit doors? Didn't the campaign just say that Biden's "chains" comment was "not helpful", and isn't that the first time any Dem has dared take exception to the rantings of Slow Joe? Other than Condi, I can't think of a Republican who would cream Biden more thoroughly in a debate than Ryan would/will; with a nod Obama can make sure it doesn't happen. I can't see Hillary taking the slot, so that leaves...Andrew Cuomo, Kirsten Gillibrand, Ed Rendell, Bob Casey... Sure it's crazy, but crazy stuff happens much more often than people want to admit.

sailor

IMO, Biden is just losing it! So many spoken mistakes. He should be withdrawn from campaigning or at least speaking on the campaign trail. Now, that is what the WH should do--but I don't want them to do it. Keep him speaking, please!

narciso

Yes, we don't take most of those polls seriously, if we're supposed to take his
number crunching seriously, let's look at the numbers, they don't make sense.

Frau Kuriositaet

Kalamazoo native

You say that like it's a bad thing!

DrJ - that's an alert for TK.

Huma's theme song could be "I've got a gal in Kalamazoo."

MarkO

Rob Crawford

Come on.

Np, they are more likely to be eaten,

Danube of Thought

GWHB would have been re-elected without Ross Perot's presence.

The polling suggested otherwise; many Perot voters indicated a preference for Clinton had Perot not been on the ballot. GHWB approval at this point in 1992 was 29%

Obama is at Gallup 45% today. No victorious incumbent has ever been that low this late.

sailor

DoT, I so hope you are right.

Ralph L

Jeopardy! last night,..., featured more Prezzie political ads
Wasted money--I'd have thought J viewers would already have made up their minds and be highly likely to vote. Course, in the Triangle they're mostly Zero voters.

derwill

Well, now we know what the narrative will be if Obama loses: It is settled science that the intent of all the people who didn't vote was to vote for Obama, therefore President Romney does not have a mandate because his election was not legitimate, so he should listen to the will of the people and govern as Obama would have governed, since technically Obama won the election because all the votes that weren't voted were votes for him . . . Or something like that.

Jane - talk is cheap!

Sudden, mysterious, tragic death? Hey - they're Chicago thugs, don't put anything past them. Plus imagine the sympathy that would elicit, with the media wailing and moaning, re-elect for the memory of Joe!

Sadly that is not out of the realm of possibility.

I don't think Hillary wants it - but maybe I don't understand her lust for power well enough. Given how little is demanded of you, she might see it as a much easier job.

Time for Chelsea to get pregnant.

I remember leading Dems grumbling about the flawed candidate the Party had chosen just before the convention in '92, but they sucked it up and went wild for the cameras, causing Perot to drop out temporarily.

sailor

Jane, I don't know that Chelsea's marriage is such that she could get pregnant--I think Chelsea and her husband live apart. He is in Colorado, I think, "finding himself."

John Fund:

"Last night, a frustrated Rudy Giuliani acknowledged it on CNBC. 'I’ve never seen a vice president that has made as many mistakes, said as many stupid things,' he told Larry Kudlow. 'I mean, there’s a real fear if, God forbid, he ever had to be entrusted with the presidency, whether he really has the mental capacity to handle it. I mean, this guy just isn’t bright. He’s never been bright. He isn’t bright. And people think, ‘Well, he just talks a little too much.’ Actually, he’s just not very smart.'"

But believe me--he'll be on the ticket.

Extraneus

Sarah Palin suggests Hillary after Giuliani says this? This has to be a coordinated attack. They're trying to force Obama to keep him.

“I think if it came from somebody serious, maybe we’d get all excited about it,” Giuliani said on CNBC’s The Kudlow Report, dismissing Biden. “But I think the vice president of the United States has become a laugh line on late night television. I mean, I’ve never seen a vice president that has made as many mistakes, said as many stupid things. …There’s a real fear if, God forbid, he ever had to be entrusted with the presidency, whether he really has the mental capacity to handle it.”

“I mean, this guy just isn’t bright. He’s never been bright. He isn’t bright. People think well, he just talks a little too much. Actually, he’s just not very smart.”

And if he's dropped, I sure hope the Republicans are ready to immediately trash his replacement.

Extraneus

Ooops, didn't see your post there, DoT.

NK

Dump Biden: I think that plays as well as McCain suspending his campaign.

Janet

“Just how panicked would we all be if Barack Obama suddenly had chest pains?”

I would rather have Biden as POTUS than Obama. Biden is a goof head but he doesn't just outright hate America.

Rob Crawford
And if he's dropped, I sure hope the Republicans are ready to immediately trash his replacement.

*AND* trash Obama's judgement for either a) forcing an obviously unwell man to campaign and then callously dropping him, or b) bowing to the far-left in his choice of the replacement.

Or both.

Jim,MtnViewCA,USA

A good point, but I think Beldar's point is more along the lines of "how come the pundits have been studiously ignoring this situation for the past 3.5 years? this is serious stuff"

Captain Hate

I would rather have Biden as POTUS than Obama. Biden is a goof head but he doesn't just outright hate America.

It would be like having McRINO as President albeit weaker on defense.

derwill

Speaking of blowing things up . . . One thing that could be a major game changer in this election is Iran. I don't think Israel would do a preemptive strike before the election unless they believed they had no other choice, but they might not have any other choice.

And if Obama's internals are showing him losing handily before the election would he start a war with a Iran in order to cash in on the rally around the flag sentiment? Would it work?

Captain Hate

And if Obama's internals are showing him losing handily before the election would he start a war with a Iran in order to cash in on the rally around the flag sentiment? Would it work?

It would turn a landslide into an even bigger one. His base would desert him and nobody else would trust him.

derwill, That brings "Wag The Dog" to mind. IMO, I don't think O will do that unless he is desperate and sees himself losing. And I think he has such a high opinion of himself, that he honestly cannot see himself losing.

Fishbowl DC changes their copy (sigh - Betsey Rothstein is notorious for this!) and now has inserted this inside the paragraph I posted earlier this morning:

Not exactly. That’s actually Lady Gaga on the cover, but the former first daughter is featured on the inside of the mag’s hefty September issue.

So it was GaGa all along. Of course, no one could tell the difference!

Clarice

Yes, Sue and JMH, I concede I misspoke when I called Rove's map a "prediction".

As for Hilary, Hit, let's stir up a bit more,,why did Conde Nast feature a substantially airbrushed Hil in their travel mag and (ridiculous but stylish) Chelsea cover on Vogue?

My too subtle for prime time give away was the spelling of "Hillary" and the obligatory "!" Mrs. Clinton gave herself. It may be the ultimate lie that Barack Husein Obama was named after his father. The answer is blowing in the DNA.
IMHO Barry the Hindmost should be an Obama Junior and not an Obama the Second.

Clarice - see my comment just before yours - Fishbowl changed their blog to day it was NOT Chelsea, but was Lady GaGa.

I don't think there is anything--including dropping a nuke on Tehran--that would cause Bam's base to desert him. Somehow they would find a way to rationalize it to themselves. For one thing they would correctly surmise it was done to win reelection, and what's a few hundred thousand dead Persians when it comes to the Cause?

How the muddle would react I have no idea. A war like that in the Middle East would be so disruptive and catastrophic, the consequences so numerous and so many of them unpredictable . . . NK's right--a wildcard. I pray we never find out.

Listen, folks, as far as I'm concerned there's only one person who chooses who the Vice President is, and his name is Barack Hus...Obama. And the American people. Of course, you guys get your say, right? That's what this is: It's election season! And so everybody gets political.

But I'll tell you right now the same thing that I told Barack in 2008, that I am ready, willing, prepared, able, and eager that if the worst should happen - obviously not eager about that part, but if it did, and you don't even want to put that thought into the air. Don't want to give the crazies any ideas. Especially on a day like now, when we're learning that a far right-wing conservative Christian organization has been involved in a deadly shooting right in Washington DC. I mean that's what we're dealing with every day, folks.

And now they'll come out, Fox News, and Rush Limbaugh, and all the rest of 'em, who want to tear down what we've done and take America back into the Stone Age of the 1950s and the 1800s instead of working with us on a bipartisan basis without all the name-calling, and they'll say that Joe Biden accused everybody on the right of being a potential mass murderer. I never said that. I have no way of knowing how many, or what they're all thinking. My job as Vice President isn't to count every one who might be a threat, but to be aware of the ones who are a threat, and plan to deal with those as best we can, besides helping on the different initiatives that Barack gives me, and so far I've done it. And I'll continue to do it.

And I'm going to do it for another four more years, and Barack is going to do it with me. God bless you and God bless America! And every other country, whether Allah or God or even for the agnostics, because we have freedom of religion which is so very precious.

OT --- I'm really glad Insty reader John Henry took Glenn to task for comparing Biden to Admiral Stockdale (whom I admire to this day)

It is grossly unfair to mention Stockdale and Biden in the same breath much less compare them.

Stockdale was a highly decorated Naval Aviator (26 personal combat decorations, including the Medal of Honor and four Silver Stars) Served as President of the Naval War College, POW for 9 years in whihc he served as an example we should all hope to be able to emulate. President of the Citadel, Fellow at the Hoover Institute and more.

What has Biden ever done? Not particularly smart, he managed to get elected to the public trough. His primary accomplishment has been getting re-elected. His life has been so unaccomplished he had to plagiarize someone else’s biography when he ran for prez a few years ago.

Shame on you for comparing them. Biden isn’t fit to scrape the mud from Stockdale’s boots.

Fortunately for fellow prisoners, Stockdale was a student of philosophy and shared the lessons he learned from Epictetus.
A real huckleberry...

Who do YOU think has been writing Biden's material?

Admiral Stockdale (whom I admire to this day)

As I wrote to Glenn,
I remember laughing at that video clip [an SNL skit making fun of Admiral Stockdale] when I was a kid, and looking forward to Dennis Miller tearing in to the old fool. What Miller said instead was and remains the only statement I've ever heard from somebody in the entertainment industry that made me ashamed of my own conduct. It deserves to be reprinted here:

Now I know (Stockdale's name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let's look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with.

The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those f***ing animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.

Somewhere out there Paddy Chayefsky must be laughing his ass off. ...
