In which an earnest young man discovers it is better to be respected than liked; the NY Times ponders Obama's evolution on China. I especially like this:
Mr. Obama’s turn to Asia was not precisely what he had in mind when he entered office. The shift emerged in fits and starts, after a first year in which critics, including the president’s aides, concluded that the United States had been too soft on China. In interviews, a dozen current and former administration officials described a White House that struggled to find the right tone with Beijing.
From his decision not to meet with the Dalai Lama in 2009 to his tightly constrained first trip to China, the president accommodated Chinese leaders in the hopes that the moves would translate into good will on issues like climate change or Iran’s nuclear program.
They did not. China spurned the United States on climate change standards, dragged its feet on efforts to pressure Iran and began bullying its neighbors over territorial claims in the South China Sea. That last development, in particular, persuaded the administration that the time for accommodation had come to an end.
“I certainly think we tested the limit of how far you can get with China through positive engagement,” said Benjamin J. Rhodes, a deputy national security adviser. “We needed to toughen our line in Year 2, and we did that.”
Fortunately, these lessons have been applied elsewhere in this canny White House:
To some extent, Mr. Obama’s learning curve on China parallels his early outreach to Iran: an initial hope that old adversaries could put aside their differences, followed by a jolting recognition of reality and the ultimate adoption of a realpolitik approach.
I am encouraged that it only took a year or two for Team Obama to stop believing their own BS. Well, some of it.

Ras has it 46 46 this AM after an admittedly brutal week for Mitt from a drubbing from the media. I think he just took their best shot and is still standing, and he ought to take a page out of Newt's playbook and start running against the media, cuz beating Zero looks to be easy but Zero and the unified "look over there squirrel" media together, a bit more formidable.
Remember Dick Morris confirms above in the link I provided that RAS is using a model of turnout that is halfway between 2004 and 2008 ( approx 3.5% + D ). Try putting a surge of Republicans into the model at R + 2 and see what you get.

"By allowing our attention to be focused exclusively on the danger and prevention of terrorism, we ignore the many other ways we are being attacked. Specifically, we are missing what our Islamist enemies call their ‘civilization jihad’ — a form of warfare that employs manipulative financial techniques, lawfare, infiltration of our civil institutions and government and insidious information dominance. Together, these have the effect of exploiting our liberties and governing structures against us, so that our leaders wind up imposing the very anti-American values that our enemies promote."
Welcome to The Muslim Brotherhood in America: The Enemy Within — a 10-part, web-based video briefing that is designed to explain why and how this is happening."

Everybody happy that the JEF and Rodham have commercials in Pakistan apologizing for the anti mooooooslim clip? I think he's one-upped Dhimmi Carter with that since I believe adultery-of-the-heart confined his criticism of values to those of our allies (with special allowances for the Jooos and their "divided loyalties"). Maybe the Indonesian was upset by a photo in the WSJ of somebody burning a picture of him (with an "X" drawn through his visage) since he obviously cares more about himself than the country he's sworn to defend. I found the photo amusing.

JMH, yesterday DrewM had a post over at Ace's about the Benghazi attack. He mentions an Ethan Chorin who was to have a meeting with Stevens, scheduled for the next day. Turns out Chorin spoke with Stevens by phone an hour before the attack, and then subsequently was on the phone with his security person when the attack began.
Chorin is an economic development guy per DrewM's post and had something to do with improving the local hospital. Anyway, looks like that meeting is one reason the ambassador was in Benghazi.

Good morning (my 4:54 should have "nytol").
What a fun day yesterday. I had lunch with ManTran and his son. Turns out I have family that has lived in or near many of the places ManTran has as well. We then rode the BART over to meet the others. DrJ graciously awaited our arrival at the station and drove us to the restaurant. The restaurant sat out over the water on the bay with fantastic views. At the restaurant, Elliott and JiminMtnView were already there willing and able to share with us which waitresses had the poise and confidence of seasoned athletes. We moved from the dining room to the bar, ostensibly because the dining room was going to shut down, but mostly because they only serve happy hour in the bar (which is a misnomer because we were there for at least 3 hours). East Bay Jay then arrived, and our group was complete. Well, not complete, of course because we were very much missing Ignatz and Enlightened who were unable to join us even though they tried like heck to.
Elliott and I then had to bid our adieus (he did so better than I because I think French is one of the fourteen languages he speaks). We then parked at a BART station and headed to the heart of San Francisco. Elliott had secured two tickets to The Obama Report Card - A Berkeley Law Centennial Roundtable Event.
"Sounds mind-numbingly boring," I hear someone grumbling somewhere on the internets. No. A thousand times no. It was fascinating.
I met Robert Reich, who was a part of the roundtable (which is a misnomer because there were actually 3 round tables between the speakers' seats). I'm normally a very introverted guy who would not do such a thing, but having had something like 18 beers at the meet up and two glasses of wine at the pre-roundtable reception, I couldn't help myself. Elliott had some pretty good lines ready to make conversation. Me? I was fascinated to be able to inspect Reich's scalp, towering over him as I was in stature. I'm not a tall guy, so this doesn't happen all that often. Alas, neither Elliott nor I were sufficiently sucking up to him, so Mr. Reich so he quickly sought to excuse himself.
The roundtable itself was rather interesting. Two Republicans and two Democrats, with the discussion moderated by the Dean of Berkeley Law. Pretty predictable stuff on both sides. Former California Governor Pete Wilson made a few good jabs at Obama. At one point he brought up how "convenient" Obama's evolution on gay marriage was, and his Democratic counterpart countered with a rambling defense of Obama by describing that a lot of people had evolved in the last few years on the topic because "it was out in the ether".
Part of the format for the round table involved giving attendees their own Obama Report Card on which one was invited to write questions for the panel. Unfortunately, try as I might by digging through my bag, I could not find a pen. I'm sure Elliott's unasked question would have been terrifically incisive. I'm sure mine would have remained unasked, even if submitted. I'm not sure, but it might have drawn the attention of security.
Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot to mention who Governor Wilson's Democratic counterpart is. She is a current Distinguished Practitioner of Law and Public Policy at UC Berkeley, she is the hostess of a Current TV show, she is a former Dating Game star and she is the former Governor of Michigan.
She is Jennifer Granholm.
Upon Elliott's urging, we made our way down to the stage after the roundtable had concluded so that we could meet the panelists, most especially Jenn (she didn't tell me out loud that she wanted me to call her that, but I could see it in her eyes). And speaking of eyes, I think mine gave away the crush I have on her too:
What a fun day yesterday.
Thank you Elliott. Thanks everybody I got to meet with yesterday for the fun. And a special thanks to DrJ whose community organizing acumen has me convinced that he could have gotten the asbestos out of Altgeld Gardens.

Our elementary school kid has to do a current event report each month. The teacher provides a list of sites (not required to use them) but it leans heavy toward "TimeForKids" types.
I've seen Time For Kids, it seems heavily weighed towards global warming, puff pieces on BHO and Michelle, and social justice. KidsNewsRoom.com I don't know as well, but a quick scan looks pretty similar.

Just saw that Narciso.
So Hillary gives more in depth secret security briefings to the New York Times than it does to Republican Congressmen.
And CNN has Ambassador Steven's private notebooks.
Yet they all colluded in the "It Was the Video" meme.
Again makes me question if anything changed once Mitt Romney started attending Security briefings at the White House. Was Mitt being given the same cock and bull story the Administration was putting out, or possibly was Mitt now hearing real information, thus forcing the White House to grudgingly change their BS story.
I don't know how these things work but I have to imagine some in Security have to be pissed at this Administrations cover-up, and eager to get the story of that cover-up out to the public and Team Romney.
Posted by: daddy | September 22, 2012 at 04:21 PM
Well daddy, Mitt was just observing 'the tip of the iceberg' and look at the flak he caught, when
you think of both the audacity of the MSM/ administration zysgy and that of the planner of this operation, who not only struck on September 11th, but a very particular significant date, in their calendar.

The notion that he's learned anything in four years, is extremely mistaken

was Mitt now hearing real information, thus forcing the White House to grudgingly change their BS story.
Very perceptive, daddy. If true, it's another indication that the pros are being led by amateurs.

Just incredible after what happened this week. I don't know how anybody in uniform can re-up.

Got it Mark, thank you.

" I don't know how anybody in uniform can re-up."
I suspect that no re-ups is part of the leftist master plan.

Hi, Ms Trish:
"Chorin is an economic development guy per DrewM's post and had something to do with improving the local hospital. Anyway, looks like that meeting is one reason the ambassador was in Benghazi."
Seems to be my day for dashing back and forth! Thanks for the pointer to DrewM, which I'll follow up on, this evening.
Ditto for the backgrounder on Chorin, Sandy.
Gotta run, back after sundown.

Chorin's CV says The Company all over it.
Ivy League, touchy-feely concerns, Near East Language, works for Dubai (a major ME front for us), etc.
All the guys were there at the same time (The SEALS, Stevens and Chorin). Why? MANPADS? I doubt it. Something else and it could have been the information there and they knew they were targets because of the warnings.
2 weeks and we'll all know. That is the life cycle of a secret.

Reds are in. I am sure Rob Crawford is as proud as me.
Still waiting for TC's answer as to why he thought the Cards would win the division?

Romney to ‘greet’ Obama with this billboard in Wisconsin today.

Well JiB, Certainly a consideration, and I agree that they should be there in spades, but I think that the bungling is a bit too much to connect the dots to that group, particularly for a reasonably professional agency with so much recent experience on the front line. This isn't the Mazar el Sharif and Johnny Spann era.
And Chorin, well he cannot keep his flappin mouth shut, like here, or here or here. . .
Not much professional discretion if he were to be so employed.
