A sobering and thoughtful piece from Matt Continetti at Free Beacon this morning:
Can we pause from our hypomanic poll checkups? Can we stop tweeting about the early vote? Is it possible in the final days of this close election to step back and reflect, if only for a few moments, on the challenges that will face whoever is elected president on Tuesday? I’m as guilty as the next pundit of obsessing over the fight between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. My nerves are fried. I’ve been freebasing poll crosstabs like an addict. But the fiscal, economic, and foreign policy crises that will likely unfold in the coming months cannot be ignored.
He suggests that if Romney wins, we still control the House, but Senate remains Dem by narrow margin. Troubles will be significant and many. Press will be primed to "bite" (I think bite is rather mild, personally, it will be non-stop attack).
After winning, we will have to be even stronger than before.
Well the good news is that the November insider newsletters were prepared before reelection was in jeopardy and contained a gusher of the 2nd term agenda involving our children and our future.
I suspect that teaching middle schoolers to emulate a pack of geese to show their collective commitment to each other and operation as a team will not play well.

And the Supreme Court may be called upon to rule about whether Obamacare as a tax/funding bill, actually originated in the House.
The most important thing, if Romney wins, will be for tea party types to force Duke and Duke types to research abuse over the past four years to legislate sufficient checks to see they cannot happen again.

I have cell service and Internet access on my iPhone. My town is a mess . No power anywhere. A portable substation has been brought in as a first step but all the many trees, downed phone poles, wires need to be cleared first . Needless to say, I am without power, phone, Internet, and water pressure low. A friend the next town over has power and I am spending nights there. Heard on NJ radio station that union NJ electric crews are blocking nonunion work crews from other states. Blocked a crew from Alabama. They went to Long Island instead. Christie needs to go ballastiic with them. We need all the help we can get. I understand a northeaster is headed our way next week. What's next, a plague of locusts.
I am grateful though that my friends and family made it through in one piece with houses still standing.
" Wealthy Columbia Univ. donor: School told me Obama had 2.6 GPA
By Neil Munro @ The Daily Caller
The shroud over President Barack Obama’s college records — recently spotlighted by Donald Trump’s $5 million challenge — is prompting Americans to share what they’ve got, and The Daily Caller is getting its share of leads, including one story that the president scored a GPA of only 2.6 at Columbia University.
The 2.6 grade can’t be confirmed, is contradicted by some evidence, and it doesn’t say anything about the courses, professors and associations Obama was immersed in during his two-year stay in Columbia.
But the source is credible, and he’s contributing to the collective effort by Americans to find out more about their president — who is a champion of a greater role for himself and other government officials in Americans’ personal lives, social norms and career opportunities."
170K jobs 'created' of which 90,000 assumed based on Birth/Death model of jobs assumed to be created, but BLS can't yet find in the payroll data. In other words, 80,000 actual payroll jobs, less than half that are needed to keep up with demographic expansion. The Jobs market remains dead, Obamacare killed it in March 2010. On the broader Household survey side, U-3 goes UP .1% to 7.9%, but U-6 (underemployed) goes down .1% to 14.6. I don't have time today to read the whole report... but bottom line, nothing has changed the jobs market is dead, and will remain so until Obamacare is repealed.
Benghazi on the news to dispell the idea of "trust." Hmmm, why would the MSM do that? Do they now believe JEF is toast (along with Dingy Harry)? Is it an attempt to hold some credibility for pushing prog themes against Romney? (i.e. the ideas are good, but Obama, Stalin, Castro, Chavez, Europe etc. are failed leaders)
Thursday Thread-- Clarice was en fuego-- I particularly liked the Taranto logic and the Carnegie Hall cannibalism quips.
Have Blue-- was exactly right about the union issues in Ct and NJ turning away non-union Utility crews. And effin' outrage, especially last year in north central Ct which was slammed by Irene. Have Blue was also spot on about Ct politics.
Have Blue-- if I can ask, whereabouts do you live in the "Land of Steady Habits"-- NOT ANY MORE.

Fat boy has backed his rounded carcass into an ill fitting corner with his lovefest with the JEF. Utility unions are real nut crackers who love flexing their muscles at times like this and the Indonesian won't do a damn thing to counter them. Neither will his other mancrush Brooooooooooooce.
When I started making election predictions eight years ago, I had a very different perspective than I do today. I knew relatively little about the history of presidential elections or the geography of American politics. I had a good background in political science and statistics. So, unsurprisingly in retrospect, I focused on drawing confidence intervals from poll averages.
Since then, I have learned substantially more history, soured somewhat on political science as an academic discipline, and have become much more skeptical of public opinion polls. Both political science and the political polls too often imply a scientific precision that I no longer think actually exists in American politics. I have slowly learned that politics is a lot more art than science than I once believed.
Accordingly, what follows is a prediction based on my interpretation of the lay of the land. I know others see it differently--and they could very well be right, and I could be wrong.
I think Mitt Romney is likely to win next Tuesday.
For two reasons:
(1) Romney leads among voters on trust to get the economy going again.
Fat boy has backed his rounded carcass into an ill fitting corner with his lovefest with the JEF.
Yep, question becomes how bad must it get on Staten Island, how long must power stay off on Long Island, how much dumpster diving must occur in NYC before Christie allows that O maybe isn't doing such a wondrous job after all. And it can't be a NJ vs NY thing, as recreational runner enthusiast and enforced diet maven Bloomberg has added his own hosannas to O.
Speaking of Obamacare, I had an interesting conversation with the receptionist at my kids pediatrician. I was making an appointment for a troubling cough that they can't seem to shake. Before she could process the appointment she needed to update their file with two pieces of information:
"Would you consider yourself Latino or Non-Latino? If you are Non-Latino, would you best describe yourself as White?"
WTF??
She says the questions became mandatory this year.
When we were discussing the Federal home loan modification program a couple of years ago I remember looking at some of the HAMP documents.
Got an e-mail saying that Allen West, Michelle Bachmann, and Steve King (IA) are in very tight races now. Anyone know if that's true?
WSJ comes about as close to endorsing Romney as they ever have come to making an endorsement.
Peter, Tonto, NK, Have Blue, NJ Jan, any other tri-staters, hope you all have power and gasoline, if not now, soon. I'm sure unions are a problem in NYC too. 2-hour waits for buses from Brooklyn to Manhattan?

Romney Certain Voters 46%, Obama Certain Voters 44% (same as yesterday).
Without leaners, Romney is up 48%-47%.
So I'll only be wrong once, I'm sticking with my prediction of Romney 270-268 in the EC and Romney 51%-48% in the PV, and then all Hades breaking loose (recounts, court cases, attempts to turn electors, Chris Matthews saying Romney should just give up for the good of the country, and so on).
Thanks all. Food is available and my friend is wonderful. She has opened her house to a few of us. She is one of 10 houses in her town that has electricity. Gas is not very available. 3 - 7 hr waits at the few gas stations open and they are being covered by police due to fights, etc. I filled up prior to storm so I'm ok for now. So far, no timeline has been given for power restoration. Am hearing 11/5 to 11/11. Will try to check in later Internet access permitting . It's sporadic

The Staten Island stories are awful, elderly people found dead, children swept away.
What's the consensus of opinion on the NY marathon going on? I understand the benefits of a city moving forward to getting things back to normal by not cancelling it but the prospect of a bunch of interlopers commandeering the streets when residents are having a hard time getting from Point A to B seems a bit much.
Well I have one more interesting tidbit before descending into the bowels of what is planned as moral education to prove a positive school culture.
One of the oldest and most expensive private schools in ATL is switching its tony preschool to Deweyan/socio-cultural/it's the environment learning. They are selling it as an Italian approach and I immediately said Reggio Emila? Surprise that I knew. I am staying out so far apart from a private Told You So to hubby and just collecting info. Lining up between outraged parents and others angry that parents are not willing to defer to pros in charge who would not lead them a stray for that much money.
May need to sell popcorn down by the Chattahoochee before this is all done.
Must go after private schools. Which was by the way the price for vouchers in LA just as we feared.
What's the consensus of opinion on the NY marathon going on?
I don't feel that strongly--it's a huge pain every year, so this year is no different. I'm not sure what prevents them from postponing it a week or two, though there may be good reasons. I have no doubt that Bloomberg made the decision for the wrong reasons, though.
Don't forget the promised Reginald Denny-style beatings and lynchings. It will be a good idea to be very cautious about personal safety during the week or so after a Romney win.
Wait, why do we need an investigation? Geraldo KNOWS what happened because he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Why does Fox keep him around?
Today marks the 8th day out of the last 9 that Romney has cleared 50% on early voting here (based on my allocation of votes which are recorded by party affiliation and not for whom the vote was actually cast).
I am showing Romney ahead by 58K votes, which compares to McCain being behind by 272K in 2008. With two days remaining in early voting, Romney will likely pick up another 25K vote cushion, having added 12.8K per day over the last 3 days.
In 2008, McCain garnered ~258K more votes on election day than Obama. If Romney matches that margin, the vote would end up right about 54-46 Romney. If Romney outpaces that McCain performance, in roughly the same measure he has in early voting, the 56-44 result from Bush's win in 2004 becomes possible.
Now, all of my numbers are based on assumptions. And assumptions can certainly make an ass out of the person making them. I am an amateur doing amateurish work, afterall, and there are a lot of variables I am steadfastly not considering. And speaking of and caveats -- and assumptions and asses while we're at it -- do let the record reflect, I am no Nate Silver.
It appears that Romney is outspending Obama on the air by a two-to-one margin. According to Mark Murray at First Read, team Romney is spending $82.9 million in the final week of the campaign compared to Obama's $44.6 million.
As I think about the marathon more, I think I'd be pretty pissed off if I were on Staten Island seeing all the resources going into it. I think it starts on Staten Island, doesn't it? Ridiculous. Bloomberg is a prima donna.
7.9. Santelli predicted this number 2 months ago. 7.8 was a lie just to help Obama. Sept. jobs 140,000. Why would 171,000 generate a higher number than Sept. Oct. numbers will be revised AFTER the election. It's higher than when Obama took office. Zandi actually said on Inauguration Day it was 8.1 or something. The economy is stagnant and Mitt is right to call it that. Obama's presidency is stalled just like the economy. He has no real plan to turn it around. He needs to be s----canned on Tuesday
It seems the height of stupidity to run a race in these circumstances & asking for trouble to assemble big crowds when emergency responders are already overwhelmed & tired.
Staten Island Borough President Jim Molinaro…urged New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg Wednesday to cancel Sunday’s New York City Marathon. The race’s staging area is on Staten Island and Molinaro said it would be “crazy, asinine,” to have the race after what has happened.
“My God. What we have here is terrible, a disaster,” Molinaro said Wednesday. “If they want to race, let them race with themselves. This is no time for a parade. A marathon is a parade. Now is the time to put your shoulder to the wheel. If they want to prepare for something, let them prepare for the election, not a marathon.”
“Do you realize how many police officers you need for a marathon?” he asked. “There are people looting stores on Midland Avenue. There is looting taking place in the homes on the South Shore that were destroyed. That is where we need the police.”
H/T The Corner, original article at ABC News in the LUN
Why would 171,000 generate a higher number than Sept.
Larger work force number. Although 170k every month would never get us out of recession, the internals weren't too bad - doesn't matter, though, as they're all baloney anyway and all that anyone cares about is the main number.
JimmyK explains the marathon decision correctly. Who knows if it's right or wrong to put it on--- the point is this SOB mayor nanny is pushing it so he and his pals --the billionaires and celebs-- can gather and sip Mimosas and eat gluten free snacks while cops who should be guarding burnt out Breezy Point and Fire EMTs who should be checking on the physical condition of the elderly in State Island shelters will be tending a handful of blazing fast Kenyans and thousands of upper middle class wannabe runners from all over the world.I have always been taught and have rejected class warfare and envy, but with this Helo/Gulfstream liberal billionaire Bloomberg, I'm warming up to the idea.
The ABC news article I linked above is heartbreaking & gives you a sense of the complete devastation that some of theses families are facing. It is not the time to move on until the people in immediate distress have been helped.
The scenes I've been seeing on FOX of the destruction on Staten Island are nothing short of heartbreaking. Perhaps they're low in the pecking order for help, though, as Staten Island actually went for McCain in '08:
Sheesh. I wish there was something we could do more than wish you well. I don't even have an idea of how I could help. Is there something I can do from Texas?
We need all the help we can get. I understand a northeaster is headed our way next week. What's next, a plague of locusts.
NJ Jan,
It's sounds exactly like what we went thru with the Tornado. After it hit we had storm after storm,
Amy is frantic to figure out a way to help. If you have any ideas let me know. Amy wanted to rent a Uhaul and fill it with gas cans - I assume that is illegal. I suggested inviting displaced people to come stay with here for awhile. Anyone have any other ideas?
As hundreds of thousands of Big Apple residents suffer in homes left without power by Hurricane Sandy, two massive generators are being run 24/7 in Central Park — to juice a media tent for Sunday’s New York City Marathon.
And a third “backup” unit sits idle, in case one of the generators fails.
The three diesel-powered generators crank out 800 kilowatts — enough to power 400 homes in ravaged areas like Staten Island, the Rockaways and downtown Manhattan.
NY Post h/t Hot Air
I'm with Molinari on the marathon..also on the Red Cross.
I hope the Romney margin of victory is sufficient that we don't have lingering fights and recounts. I have no doubt that his work will be hard but that he's up for it.(Man Eeyore doesn't had describe some of you.)
******BREAKING NEWS******MICHELLE OBAMA CATCHES CHRIS CHRISTIE IN BED WITH THE PRESIDENT********PRESIDENT THROWN OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE......FOR REAL******FRIENDS SAY THEY'RE TRYING TO WORK THINGS OUT*******CHRISTIE DESCRIBED AS A 'SENSITIVE LOVER'*****
This time I put my money on Mia Love, Allen West, Josh Mandel and Mitt Romney---bring it home guys. (As for the upthread question,, I think West is as always a big Dem target but that he's doing okay. He's made himself a national figure which means he gets sufficient financial help to fight back.)
"espite what the Obama campaign wants you to believe, early voting results show President Obama doesn't have an advantage over Governor Romney.
In fact, Mitt currently leads Barack Obama 52% to 45% among voters who have already cast their ballots.
Poll after poll reports Mitt leading among independents -- and 2.5 million independents in battleground states have either voted or have ballots in hand.
Thanks to you, our paid media effort, ground operations, and voter contact programs are fully funded -- which will help our momentum even more.
The Republican team has the resources to expand the map in ways that weren't possible in past cycles -- without reducing efforts in other target states."
Power back on overnight here in Morris county, NJ. I haven't left the house since Sunday, when I bought 15 gal. of gas for the generator, so I haven't seen the gas lines. Hope everyone in the city and along the coast are well. I put a winch on my quad a few weeks ago, so I sawed up some blow down with my Stihl 028 and skidded them like a lumberjack (no laughing Iggy:)
Running the marathon is absurd; it should be cancelled. Elite athletes train to peak in something like a three day window, and I don't think alot of them would come next week or the following week.
Stay warm, everyone. It's going to be cold tonight (maybe get a good winter bag if you don't have one).
Just heard on the radio... Mitt's rally at State Fair is past capacity (10,000? in the center), people still arriving directed to overflow space in the annex. 9:30 central start.
I think West is as always a big Dem target but that he's doing okay. He's made himself a national figure which means he gets sufficient financial help to fight back.
Allen West losing is unthinkable. Anybody who would vote against him is, by definition, a horrible excuse for a human being.
Thanks Henry-- 5Xs Order of magnitude of JEF's crowd in Green Bay (union town), and most of them went to see the Packers who showed.RR are ahead in national polls, the EC will be decided by turnout. GOTV-- if the good guys turnout, WE WIN. I have no doubt.
JiB-- you are a lucky man, what a handsome chap. I was in Arles last month, that image is just as good as anything I saw by VvG.
When are you going to Southampton next? I'll drive out buy you a drink.

Perhaps in the black community, the question should be not "What have you done for us lately?" but "What have you done TO us lately?"

I know some people who test well and others who got good grades. Neither is a guarantee that a stupid idea won’t take root.
That is why, even though one who believes a poor idea might be offended, democracies allow the least among us to laugh bad ideas to their knees.

Morning Jay: Why Romney Is Likely to Win
6:00 AM, Nov 2, 2012 • By JAY COST
(2) Romney leads among independents.

When we were discussing the Federal home loan modification program a couple of years ago I remember looking at some of the HAMP documents.
http://www.askaloanmodguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/HAMP-application-Form.pdf
One page is for signatures. Of the remaining two pages, half of one page is devoted to finding out your ethnicity and gender.
Something stinks.

Have mud boots on.

I don't feel that strongly--it's a huge pain every year, so this year is no different. I'm not sure what prevents them from postponing it a week or two, though there may be good reasons. I have no doubt that Bloomberg made the decision for the wrong reasons, though.

Hi ho.

Well, this seems like good news:
It appears that Romney is outspending Obama on the air by a two-to-one margin. According to Mark Murray at First Read, team Romney is spending $82.9 million in the final week of the campaign compared to Obama's $44.6 million.

As I think about the marathon more, I think I'd be pretty pissed off if I were on Staten Island seeing all the resources going into it. I think it starts on Staten Island, doesn't it? Ridiculous. Bloomberg is a prima donna.
Posted by: jimmyk | November 02, 2012 at 10:02 AM

Why would 171,000 generate a higher number than Sept.
Larger work force number. Although 170k every month would never get us out of recession, the internals weren't too bad - doesn't matter, though, as they're all baloney anyway and all that anyone cares about is the main number.
Posted by: hrtshpdbox | November 02, 2012 at 10:09 AM
