I believe the Teamsters agreed to a cut and the Bakers struck, NK, but then you know how addled I get.

JM Hanes

Make that "casual fraud or carelessness."

daddy

Clarice's French Restaurant post about some fab French meal on the previous thread prompted this thought.

In the book I recently finished, on Thomas Jefferson taking his slave over to France to learn how to cook French food, it mentions that later, while back in the States and in Washington's Cabinet, Hamilton was desperate to create a Federal Bank and mentioned to Madison and Jefferson that if he could not get one created, he was going to resign as Treasury Secretary.

According to the book, Jefferson after discussion with Madison, decided to invite Madison and Hamilton to Jefferson's digs in NY City, where only those 3 would be at a private dinner, cooked by Jefferson's newly trained French Chef, and over dinner they would try to cut a deal that would allow Hamilton to have his Federal Bank in exchange for Hamilton's agreement to allow a new Capitol to be built down in Northern Virginia in order to pacify the Southern States.

The meal was a success, and the author went off explaining what they think the 7 courses were and the desserts and all the wines and aperitif's etc. Apparently there is a whole book written just about the probable chow and wines used to liquor up Hamilton and get the deal cut.

I suspect many here know that bit of history better than I, but I found it fascinating.

NK-

Baker's Union is 30% of the workforce and was the lone holdout in total of 12 unions. Teamsters led negotiations and honored the deal throughout as did the others.

Not the baker's.

Threadkiller (Get off your couch and leave the GOP!)

We should elect better election officials in counties where election results prove elections don't matter.

NK

MelR-- thanks, so the Bakers were the miscreant minority % union that struck, and they've agreed to nonbinding mediation. Meh-- I assume they'll still refuse any give backs and live off of their pensions.

Melinda Romanoff

NK-

Liquidation means no pensions, unless the union invested wisely on its members' behalf and didn't charge unreasonable "management fees" as is the norm.

They'll more than likely be PBGC customers, and "our" collective responsibility.

Q: What do you call a 500lb bomb dropped on a "media building"?
A. Poor weaponeering. Everyone knows a 1000lb'er is a practical minimum for complete destruction of a building (and that's the only reasonable goal).

On a more serious note, I think Rice was a fairly credible source on the Benghazi intel. The focus has been on the CIA, which, based on the fact that they actually had people on the ground fighting--even if it wasn't their primary mission--is completely reasonable. However, the attack was on a DoState asset, with real time reporting through State's chain, and they have their own intel section (which was presumably energized). And although she wasn't in the direct loop, she's high enough in the food chain to be well informed. The fact that she told a BS story shouldn't be considered proof she got her info in the green room.

After a hard-fought race and a squeaker of a finish Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach has conceded defeat in the 52nd Congressional District.

Democrat Scott Peters is ahead by more than 5,000 votes. About 90,000 mail-in or provisional ballots still need to be counted, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.

http://www.kpbs.org/news/2012/nov/19/congressman-bilbray-concedes-talks-about-next-step/

I have no idea how many of the 90,000 are from Bilbray's district. I did hear Bilbray on the radio say he is ok having conceded because he can now get on to his Thanksgiving plans.

To bad he didn't think of that when he decided to run again.

He was shocked that he didn't do so well since he is one of the few republicans that is all for green energy projects.

Interesting segment with the VP of WalMart on FOX by Stewart Varney.

Varney asked if Walmart had been contributing to the Sandy Relief effort and the VP said yes, and that they had given over 2 Million in cash and other kinds of assistance to help the victims in New York.

Then Varney asked, "Weren't you disallowed from opening branches in New York?", and the VP said yes, but then he said that when Governor Cuomo and Governor Christie called they felt they had to go on up and help out anyway. Varney smiled.

I thought that was perfect:

"Walmart, stay the hell out of New York...

only those 3 would be at a private dinner, cooked by Jefferson's newly trained French Chef, and over dinner they would try to cut a deal that would allow Hamilton to have his Federal Bank in exchange for Hamilton's agreement to allow a new Capitol to be built down in Northern Virginia

The story I recall was that the dinner topic was the assumption of the states' war debts by the federal government. Or was that a different dinner? In any case, I thought the compromise was assumption of the debt (which was viewed as a big windfall for northeast financial interests) in exchange for moving the capital from NYC to a swamp on the MD/VA border. Anyway, would have loved to be a fly on the wall at that event.

JMH's idea goes in the right direction, but if the voting process itself is tainted, then all we're doing is recounting tainted votes. Hostess Brands Inc. and its striking union agreed to mediation Monday to avoid the immediate liquidation of the baker of Ho Hos, Twinkies and Wonder Bread.
Bad news for Tastykake fans. The sugary processed snack food market has a lot of overcapacity. Having that overcapacity eliminated by Hostess going out of business would strengthen the rest of the industry -- when supply goes down to match demand, then the price can go up to a level where the companies can make it.

Of course it sucks to be the Hostess employees who protested themselves out of jobs, but just because they didn't understand that their conflict was with the bakers at other companies rather than Hostess management doesn't mean that they didn't get their clocks cleaned by those competitors...

Betsy Mccaughey on with Stuart Varney now, talking about ObamaCare and the consequences of States not setting up the State part of ObamaCare. Verbatem:

Varney, "Would this, "Don't set up an ObamaCare Exchange in your State", would that scuttle ObamaCare in that State?"

McCaughey: "Well certainly it is going to delay it and perhaps scuttle it. Here's what's going to happen. The Federal Govt is probably not going to be able to set up all these insurance exchanges by October, 10 and a half months from now. And so people will not be able to enroll in their required Health Plans thru a State Insurance exchange.

Here's the second glitch: This Law, not only calls for the State Insurance exchanges, it calls for State Insurance Exchanges to hand out subsidies to people to buy the mandated, Mandatory Health Plan. So people who were uninsured would have to buy the Health Plan, people who were previously covered by their own employer and got dumped out of Health Plans because they cost too much, they will have to buy Health Insurance on the Exchange, but where is the subsidy? This Law empowers subsidies for State Health Insurance Exchanges but in a careless error it did not provide for subsidies in the Exchanges set up by the Federal Government."

Varney: "Okay. Fast forward to lets say September of next year.

Mccaughey; "Big Trouble."

Varney: "And so in these States that don't have an exchange...?

McCaughey: And there is going to be Litigation because the Obama Administration says "We can hand out those subsidies regardless of what the law says", and the Lawyers say "No."

Varney: "The other States will say "Wait a minute, we don't want to spend our money either. Hey you Fed's, you can do it."

Mcc: "That's right."

Varney: "Now that would be the unravelling of the whole thing."

MCC: And, much litigation. Many people may lose their jobs because of ObamaCare but Lawyers, It's a full employment program for them."

Much more, including that the rules are still being written and costs are still going up by the Billions according to theAdministrations own estimates, but I suspect the full interview will soon be posted somewhere. Very enlightening to me.

Janet, I never thought much of Warner who succeeded in politics because he looked the part and--like Kerry--married and divorced a couple of very rich women.

Clarice,

Are you guys are talking about Senator John Warner?

If so, my very elderly at the time Grandparents had moved into a very swanky Condo/Hotel in Richmond Va at the time that Warner was married to Liz Taylor. I think it was "The Jefferson", and they lived way up on like the 20th floor, and Warner had a condo 1 floor lower, and across the way. Grandma LaLa was probl'y 90 at the time, but she was so excited to be near those celebrities, that she would sit in her room with the lights out like Jimmy Stewart in that Hitchcock classic "Rear Window", and try to catch glimpses of John and especially Liz, wandering around their condo scratching themselves and burping and fartin' and all the rest.

My mom used to joke that it probably added a decade to the old gal. Very much fun when I'd visit and Lala would limp around with her walker to point out Liz's digs and explain what she had for breakfast that very morning.

And I know this next bit will also catch you guys by surprise, but it appears that Lindsey Lohan's new Made for TV biopic as Liz Taylor, is being panned. Imagine that!

I have to say I agree. When I spotted Liz thru the shutters from Lala's darkened room in "The Jefferson", she looked more Rosanne Barrish than Lindsey Lohanish.

Barack Obama blunders again on the world stage
by Nile Gardiner, The Telegraph Nov. 19, 2012

It is rather embarrassing, as well as sad, that the leader of the free world can’t even pronounce the name of the most famous human rights activist on the planet. Or that he is so quick to appease Burma’s authoritarian regime by calling it “Myanmar”. Barack Obama’s gaffes demonstrate not only a marked lack of attention to detail and a high degree of amateurishness on the part of the White House, but also a disturbing willingness to curry favour with unsavoury regimes. Hardly a good omen for Obama’s second term.
