While pretending to abide by my New Year's resolution at the gym I noticed a baffling story about... well, the sound was turned down, but what I gleaned is that Lance Armstrong was cheating with Manto Te'o's girlfriend. Or something...
Can anyone fill me in?
Forget the gym, was there a resolution about cutting back on the caffeine? That's four posts today, after four yesterday, and the day is young. TM is on fire!

Funny that you mention this TomM.... I have not read the details about the Manto Te'o fabricated girlfriend story, but it got me to thinking. How does any of us know whether JOM is a "real" conglomoration of commenter contributors made up of real life people, as opposed to JOM really some kind of Potemkin Village of ficticious commenters fabricated by Tom Maguire? OK I know I'M real (I think), I've met Jackis Back and JimmyK (I think), but what about everybody else? And what about TomM... what if you're some kind of fabrication of a LeftWing data miner grabbing valuable RightWinger cabal info? It's all very confusing.

Posted by: narciso | January 18, 2013 at 01:45 PM
Today's NYT has a story about Armstrong and the Andreu family, whose lives he all but ruined after they claimed he'd been doping. He met with them privately, but won't own up to what he did to them and apologize in public.
Re Peter's link, I don't fault the media for not tracking down info about celebrities and athletes, but the lack of interest in the facts about govt figures with a D after their name is shameful.

"Now you're not going all sylvia on us, are you.." well....it's worth a thought anyway...
Posted by: NK | January 18, 2013 at 01:48 PM
JimmyK-- Armstrong will be ruined by this, and rightfully so. Now that he done his "Limited hang out" and partially admitted the truth, all of the people he victimized over decades will get a forum to get the whole truth out. US Doping Agency staffers will leak to the media what they learned interviewing dozens of witnesses, Armstrong wasn't just a cheat he was a dope ringleader who pushed teammates into using to help HIM win. To win he needed a stronger team, one of the ways he did that was to force junior team members to juice HIS way.Now that he has 'confessed' and he's running out of money, the witnesses will come forward because they will be believed and he can't hurt them anymore. I don't like to see anyone who accomplished so much ruined, but in his case, it's deserved.

There's a street corner in Downtown LA where you can write a name down and get a California Driver's License, SS Card, and all sorts of other wonderful forms of identification for probably $25 a pop.
Not sure if I would run them through a computer, but I have always coveted the name Inigo Montoya.
Posted by: matt | January 18, 2013 at 02:30 PM
NK,
In most states open carry of an unloaded weapon is legal.
It is almost undoubtedly only a semi auto version of the AK.
It would presumably be legal to carry an unloaded legally owned NFA weapon in an open carry state.
To repeat, no legally owned NFA weapon [machine guns, silenced firearms, etc] has EVER been used in the commission of a crime in the USA.
Posted by: HCOAB | January 18, 2013 at 02:37 PM
NK, I don't know VA law. That gun is probably an SK (semi-automatic variant of an AK), which would be fine here in WI (we have constitutional open carry). Fully automatic weapons require a federal license to own, I don't know what restrictions there are on carrying one. Waving any weapon about with your finger on the trigger will get you in trouble with the law -- that is brandishing a weapon and a dangerous action.
Posted by: henry | January 18, 2013 at 02:38 PM

I have acted as a consultant on HCOAB's campaign regarding gun laws so you can generally trust what she has to say. :)

Posted by: henry | January 18, 2013 at 02:47 PM
Unloaded firearm = "lawful in most states". Apparently, not so in Ct. In my little town, the political types decided not to pay a bounty for firearms surrendered to the police. Instead, they continued an existing amnesty program for surrendering weapons to the police -- BUT THEY ADDED-- if you don't have a carry permit, you must invite the police to your home to recover HANDGUNS, because the amnesty doesn't extend to public carry to the police station. Invite to police to your house to surrender a firearm... no questions asked. Hmmm... what could possibly go wrong?
Posted by: NK | January 18, 2013 at 02:51 PM
At least, one in private hands. There was a Dayton police officer who used his department-issued rifle to kill an informant.
Add that to the performance of the NYC cops in the shooting last summer that ended with 7 completely innocent bystanders shot because "fire discipline" is something they file a union grievance over, and it seems to me that the gun grabbers should be going after the cops' guns.

BofE -- problem is, based on the second situation, your imaginary girlfriend has to be Sheryl Crow.
Posted by: Rob Crawford | January 18, 2013 at 03:13 PM
In June, 2005 while she was Armstrong's pal, Sheryl Crow was the entertainment at the pre-opening of the Bloomberg News building on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. About 400-500 guests. She sang and played guitar for almost 3 hours; she's a really good guitarist-- especially acoustic. Great show for such a small crowd-- mayor Mikey must have written a huge check. BTW-- she is really cute.
Posted by: NK | January 18, 2013 at 03:21 PM

Posted by: NK | January 18, 2013 at 03:22 PM
So from Biden we get this: We need more gun laws because we don’t have time to enforce the ones we have
From Thomas Jefferson we get this: That Government is best which governs least.
And from an NRO story we get this:
by most estimates, there are at least 4,000 separate criminal laws at the federal level, with another 10,000 to 300,000 regulations that can be enforced criminally. Just this year 400 new federal laws took effect, as did 29,000 new state laws.
Looks like Joe Biden's vision of America is beating the heck out Tom Jefferson's vision.
Posted by: daddy | January 18, 2013 at 03:26 PM
--At least, one in private hands. There was a Dayton police officer who used his department-issued rifle to kill an informant.--
I stand corrected.
In the 79 years since it was passed there have been two violent crimes committed with NFA weapons, one by a cop one by a private citizen.
There have been fewer than ten crimes in toto including paperwork violations.
I personally make a bit of a distinction between publicly owned NFA weapons like the Dayton cop used and privately owned ones.

Why did Armstrong believe he could lie with impunity for years? (make no mistake, these were deliberate well planned lies) Who nailed Armstrong? something called the US Doping Agency, which tests US olympians-- Armstrong was on the 2000 Olympic Team. Armstrong wasn't nailed back when he was competing by the worldwide cycling organization (International Cycling Union), the World Anti-Doping, the IOC, the Tour de France none of those Euro organizations. the Euros were more than happy to shut their eyes to Lance's (and everybody's doping in the 90s-2000s) because he made their pie bigger by bringing in US bucks to cycling. Armstrong just couldn't know that US Doping regulators would take their job seriously in the future. Cycling and Euro dope testing in general is hopelessly corrupt-- they pass all these fancy rules, then simply ignore them. BTW-- I have no doubt the Brits who dominated cycling last year (London Olympic year, BTW) cheated like hell, and eventually, testing will catch up them and they'll all be stripped, of their titles, Tour de France, Olympics, -- the lot.
Posted by: NK | January 18, 2013 at 04:46 PM
I am no Lance Armstrong fan but I once was because I believed him and one of his best high school friend's father is my neighbor and he swore by him. But he got sucked into the big time professional bike racing PED use. They all did it and that is how he reconciled he wasn't cheating because he was only keeping up. BS of course but that is how these guys think.
So, we are crucifying Armstrong but at the same time we are voting on Bonds, McGwire, Clemens and Sosa and Palmeiro for the HoF. Why? Why are these guys even being considered? If Armstrong is now the new bar how do these guys get to limbo underneath without even bending?

I'll bring you up to date, CT. Baseball writers refused to vote Barry Bonds into the Hall of Fame because he lied about taking Viagra to enhance his performance at those Zumba dance classes in Maine. After being arrested, the Zumba dance instructor turned her life around by becoming Manto T'eo's online girlfriend. She became seriously ill when a blood transfusion from Lance Armstrong went awry. She needed the transfusion because she wanted to best Ignatz's bike lady in a one on one race at the Playboy Mansion that was held as part of the festivities surrounding Hef's wedding to Crystal Harris.
I think that about covers it.
