The NY Times profiles Yankee DH Travis Hafner with this baffler of a headline:
The Yankees’ One-Tool Player
C'mon - everyone knows the five tools are run, throw, field, hit, and hit with power. Hafner won't make Yankee fans forget Lou Gehrig but his career numbers suggest he is an adequate two-tooler at the plate.
Well, I don't think he is where we are pinning our (fading) hopes anyway.
A veritable cornucopia of bad and occasionally lewd pun opportunities.

Posted by: Danube of Thought | February 23, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Ignatz,
My mind keeps trying to tie the Oregon gun grab to the "shoot on sight" order issued by LA security forces on Dorner. The indiscriminate slaughter occasioned by the shoot on sight order did not get very much media coverage while media immediately pimped the fact the last security officer shot by Dorner left a widow with a child. It will be interesting to see if there is any follow through on the 'tears for security forces' meme.
I find it very regrettable that the authors of such legislation will not be at risk of dieing during attempts to enforce it.

My eighty year old next door neighbor is a naturalized citizen from Canada. He has family members in Canada, the UK and South Africa. Three years ago, his older brother in South Africa, living next to a national park, was tied to a tree and tortured until he told what valuables he had and where they were. Of course, there wasn't much to be had but the man was tortured to death. He could have used a gun for protection.

Conservatives need one of the three alphabet networks if they wish to rectify the MSM's status as cheerleaders for Washington DC State, also known affectionately as ol' FU.
Alternatively, next time they're in charge of congress and the WH they could gut NPR and PBS and make them house organs of the Republican Party.
I'll wager the lefties will suddenly discover privatization has its merits and in any event gov funding of any media is a pretty lame idea.
Posted by: Ignatz Ratzkywatzky | February 23, 2013 at 03:55 PM
Be careful. Newsweek was overpriced at a dollar because of pension liabilities, etc. Now they don't even print.
Disaggregating newspapers into local, regional, and national, its the national that has lost its purpose.
I would sooner discover who owns the local weeklies surrounding Boston and contribute useful content to them.
Remember, news puts information in context to help you better plan your future. News, contrary to the NY Times, does not lead you with an inaccurate map to do what the publisher thinks you should do.
Posted by: sbw | February 23, 2013 at 03:59 PM
There is a lot of hype Jimmy. Supercapacitors have their advantages and disadvantages. Yes, they charge up faster than batteries, but they self-discharge at a much faster rate, and as they discharge the voltage across them reduces. They also can't currently compete with batteries in terms of stored energy per unit weight. They're good for specialized applications, but not battery replacements, at least not yet.
They're dangerous, too, since they discharge immediately when shorted out, like capacitors and unlike batteries.

I would argue that is precisely what the MSM now does and what the Common Core as it is actually intended to be implemented is intended to do.
I mentioned on an earlier thread that zuboff's subsequent book mentions numerous names I recognized. What I did not mention is how many of them were tied to Facing History which is really designed to be moral character devt.

Tenth Circuit on concealed carry:
"The Second Amendment's guarantee of a right to bear arms does not extend to the right to carry a concealed weapon in public, a federal appeals court in Denver has ruled.
"'We conclude that the carrying of concealed firearms is not protected by the Second Amendment . . .' Justice Carlos Lucero wrote on behalf of a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
"Lucero cited case law dating to the 1800s that put restrictions on walking around in public with a gun.
"I'n light of our nation's extensive practice of restricting citizens' freedom to carry firearms in a concealed manner, we hold that this activity does not fall within the scope of the Second Amendment's protections'" he wrote in the ruling issued Friday."

It is also,IMO, much harder for the Veteran to win when appeals are needed to overcome a VA decision than it needs to be.
It is IMO too, Pagar. The sad fact is that the quality of the "veterans' representatives" is, to be charitable, highly variable. However, there are many who are excellent, and thanks to one of them I was able to overturn an erroneous VA determination on my disability benefits without resort to the appeals process.
If you know anyone who gets an adverse determination from the VA, tell them to contact their local representative of VFW or similar organization.

Just got back from seeing Lincoln and all I can say is wow! What an incredible perspective and rendering of a critical time in our history.
As I sat and watched the interplay between the different factions and their reasons and the consequences and Lincoln's steadfast commitment, it brought home to me the greatness of the man and of our country. David Strathairn and Tommy Lee Jones, and for that matter, the entire cast were magnificent.
As we were leaving, I said to Querida that three of the Oscar nominees are really sort of America-only films; Zero Dark and Argo are the other two.
I find it quite odd in light of the Left's antipathy to our history. There was no glory for Carter in the Teheran affair, and Zero Dark has the Left in a tizzy.
So if this is true, then how can a good Stalinist in Hollywood vote for any of them.
Querida noted at lunch after, looking out over the ocean, that the Democrats still are oppressing the African American population after all of these years. It has been nonstop BS ever since 1865.
