So, they are following the example with the Times Square bomber, however the story usually begins here,

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2311909/Boston-news-Feds-investigating-possibility-governments-terror-trackers-knew-Boston-bombers-blasts.html

Like Abdullah Muhajir, started out at a local mosque and ended up in Yemen.

narciso

Also from the last thread;

http://dailycaller.com/2013/04/19/city-of-boston-gave-subsidy-to-bombing-suspects-radical-mosque/

I imagine Scott Shane will be very remiss on this point.

gmax

They took the jihadi to a Jewish run hospital. You gotta believe that this will rile up the crazies like nothing short of a smoldering Koran...

Jane -

There is no part of me that trusts Eric Holder to prosecute this guy.

I trust Carmen Ortiz less if that is humanly possible.

Cecil Turner

The FBI has a good article on the Quarles case and the public safety exception. I'd note it is a far cry from apprehending and transporting the subject and then subjecting him to hours of interrogation. Which is what the USA today suggests is the plan:

U.S. officials said a special interrogation team for high-value suspects would question him without reading him his Miranda rights, invoking a rare public safety exception triggered by the need to protect police and the public from immediate danger.
I think they run a very real risk of queering the conviction with this move--especially if he's very badly injured--which in this case would be disastrous.

As to the possible "high value" intelligence, I'd note they already have three others supposedly arrested. The guy in the top photo without a shirt is particularly interesting to me, since he hasn't been mentioned in any of the other news reports. There is also speculation of other help Tsarnaev may have received in the local area, as well as possible training during the six-month visit to Russia last year. Unfortunately, the elder appears to be the one we'd really like to interrogate.

AliceH

Wow, Cecil. That FBI link is every bit as good as the one TM linked in his post! ;)

narciso

Ny understanding, Cecil, is they were taken in 'protective custody' what ever that mmeans.

sailor

The question is: Will they "waterboard" him???

matt

Sometimes there are crimes that are so heinous that there is no way that the perp(s) are going to see the light of day ever again.

I think this is one of them. To my untutored eye the case looks open and shut. The tell tales are the murder at MIT and the pipe bombs and hand grenades.

Probably the same explosive as in the Marathon bombs was used. Even commercial gunpowder has tracers in it now.

If there are files then at some point they will have to be produced and the truth will come out about the history of the two.

Torch the dead one and scatter his ashes so there is no symbol, and let the other one consider his sins from an 8' x 12' cell at Florence.

Threadkiller

If a "Burn the Motherf***er down" Dorner-party is the new norm, especially when 8 year olds are killed, why worry about Miranda at all?

narciso

Except for the Chechen who attacked the Danish newspaper'

But Christopher Swift, who teaches national security studies at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and has studied the war in Chechnya for nearly 15 years, said it is unlikely that the Tsarnaev brothers were formally trained by Chechen Islamist militants, whose terrorist activities have always been focused on Russia.

Captain Hate

narc, did you read the WSJ review of the book on Holbrooke? I think the review might be more useful than the book itself.

Rick Ballard

"Will they "waterboard" him???"

Never. The script of this Kabuki farce requires us to refer to the child murdering Mahometan as a "suspect", as if the photographic evidence of him placing the bomb and the shootout were of a different world. We're also supposed to engage in some deep thumb sucking about what might possibly have motivated a member of a death cult with world domination as it's goal, founded by a child rapist and spread by murdering plunderers promised a sexual nirvana in exchange for their barbarity, to have "supposedly" committed this act.

I admit, it's weak theater, but weak theater is all we have on tap.

narciso

True, that's what the much vaunted Constitution Project, that Top Man Hutchinson signed on to, to make sure we never learn the lessons from how we handed Slahi, Quahtani, Al Libi and the like.

Cecil Turner

Wow, Cecil. That FBI link is every bit as good as the one TM linked in his post! ;)

Yeah, and it's especially embarrassing because I had about 5 tabs open on that case, and ended up forgetting where I got that one from (yep, copied it from Tom). Oh well . . .

Janet

Meanwhile it's party time in Colorado -

Who wouldn't want to follow the life advice of this guy?

In other spin on the news, Colleen Rowley (of both NSAWBC and VIPS fame) blames the Boston Marathon bombing on . . . you guessed it . . . the neocons:

But the lies and disinformation that go into the confusing and ever-morphing notion of “terrorism” result from the U.S. Military Industrial Complex (and its little brother, the “National Security Surveillance Complex”) and their need to control the mainstream media’s framing of the story.

gmax

Looks like the progs who live in the Peoples Republic of Madison got some "'splainin' to do"

While the University of Wisconsin has been raising tuition and clamoring for more taxpayer support they have been stockpiling hundreds of millions of dollars in unspent tuition and federal grant monies.

Sources in Madison familiar with the discovery tell RightWisconsin that the total of non earmarked funds in the massive UW Slush Fund is at least $450 million.

Didn't expect to get caught or just so sure that that Walker would be out and an administration that would turn a blind eye would be installed? This should mean some folks lose their cushy jobs, lets see if it happens.

henry

gmax, the total per radio was over $1 billion in badly tracked tuition receipts. The Senate and Assembly issued a joint statement calling for a tuition freeze for two years and a proctological review of the UW system's budget request. Walker issued a similar statement about an hour later. UW has increased tuition 7-10% per year for the past several years.

gmax

Perhaps Henry that a public caning is in order, or maybe a good old fashion tar and feathers party?

henry

Grrrr...

Wispolitics has details on the the full billion fraud at UW.

Rick Ballard

Narciso,

My bet is that the elder jihadi brother was fully inculcated with the explosive core of Mahometan values in Boston. Daddy might have started him down the road but there will be a local imam who provided the final impetus.

AliceH

-- UW has increased tuition 7-10% per year for the past several years.--

This tuition chart is from the Insty link on the subject. Using Ezra Klein math, I calculate that comes to an order of magnitude increase every year!!!

Ignatz

I thought killing Osama Bin Laden ended this war.
If it didn't then perhaps we are fighting a virulent, widespread ideology and not the individual cogs serving it.

Wonder if that might dictate a change in tactics and strategy?

henry

Thanks for the chart Alice. Fortunately, one of my nieces is on a full athletic scholarship... the other is not so lucky. The UW regents are lucky this broke during the jihadi chase, but it will not get swept under a rug by anything.

Buried treasure in the mountain.

I wonder if the Univ. of Wisc. is unique in this regard.

A precursor incident in testing their bombmaking skills?

Check out the date of the report.

Do our Bay Staters remember these events?

Danube of Thought

Test from computer.

NK

I agree that the 26yo was the lead jihadi here. But was he an acolyte of the Islamic center of Boston or an internet Imam follower? I bet the FBI figured that out in 2011, yet they never followed up on him. What instructions are the FBI gettingbfrom DC about jihadist investuigations? I bet that Obummer has pulled the reins in on checking up on jihadists as the muzzie vote is one of his tribes. The pain for Obummer coming out of the jihadist marathon bombing is far from over. The Dems will pay for his pro-muzzie world view.

It is weird. Sometimes I can comment with LUN, sometimes not. Sometimes I can't post if I post a link like my 12:04, sometimes it will not take but after a few minutes and I refresh again, it shows up.

Its starting to become a feature and not a bug.

Danube of Thought

I just submitted a post from my computer with the anonymizer intentionally turned off. It didn't come through. The test above was with it turned on, as is this message.

RichatGMU

kim-

no. not unique and probably average for a state university system.

That whole army of facilitators and every sort of identity dean one could dream up found on every college campus doesn't work for free.

Jack is Back!

DoT,

What browser do you use? Also do you have java scripts active?

RichatGMU

I think I'm batting about .333 on comments. Very odd.

Danube of Thought

I use Firefox. I don't know how to determine whether I have java scripts active.

I can't post from my iPad at all, and this has been true for about two weeks.

Ignatz

With my old address I could not use html and if I used a link it would not only not post I would never get a captcha; it would just tell me my comment was posted when it wasn't.

By changing my address I can now use html but still can't post a link or get a captcha, the latter not being something I ever thought I would lament.

I never use a LUN so it can't be the problem. Perhaps if I start using LUN I won't be able to comment at all.

That's a set up line in case anyone wasn't paying attention. :)

Ignatz

And I have a problem from both Chrome and FF.

Janet

Dave asked in the last thread - Lots of twittage about the NYT making excuses for the terrorists. What'd they say?

Captain Hate

Despite my frequent complaints about Firefox and Typepad, my postings have almost all flowed through intact.

I just got a copy of the New Farmer's Almanac with an unfortunately timed essay by my youngest Hatette on "Dynamite and Agriculture".

Clarice

Smart of me to say last Sunday I wouldn't give my university (Wisconsin) another dime, wasn't it? And I doubt the dodge is unique to that school.

Danube of Thought

Test with anonymizer off.

Threadkiller

Try this:

After you write your comment and before you hit post, place the cursor at the end of your email name, just before the "@".

Backspace thru the name as many characters as you like.

Retype the characters you deleted.

Hit post.

Clarice

Oh dear, CH.

Captain Hate

Eh, she ends it with a statement that using it requires a federal explosives license and that chemical companies and land grant universities are no longer recommending it.

C.R.

U of Wisc. isn't unique. The question is how widespread are these hidden funds. California had a scandal where our Parks Dept. had hidden 54 million while every year screeching at budget time about closing State Parks due to lack of funds.

May I just add to Rick Ballard, since I have de-lurked for a moment, that your comments are priceless.

Jack is Back!

DoT,

Go into FireFox preferences and under content there is a box Java Script Enabled. Make sure its checked. I am using Safari and for some reason not having the problems I have had in the past weeks. But I have taken the LUN out. Plus not using TypePad avatar anylonger. Seems to work.

Here is something chilling. Joker was Tweeting while on the lam

Some much for the "young, innocent, follower" narrative.

Danube of Thought

I don't see where there's an issue with Mirandizing this guy. If he's not given the warning, nothing he says can be used against him at trial, nor anything learned by pursuing leads based on what he says. But this guy is slam-dunked already, no matter what he does or doesn't say.

Frau Sprengstoff

No fair, C.R., if you go silent again. We need more CA voices.

RichatGMU

CH-

Congratulations to the younger Hatette for getting published.

Clarice

I second C.R.'s comment (I posted Rick's comment on FB where it's being met by thunderous applause) and Frau's post as well.

Danube of Thought

Thanks JiB. At Firefox preferences I see no such box.

Janet

I hate the picture of the white hat Islamic murderer up at Drudge right now. He was a good looking young man...& the left/Islamics are gonna turn him into the new Che.

Here's the only pic that should be used.
Murderous punk loser with a bloody face & his underwear showing. LOSER.

Today's WSJ is an absolute must read.

They interviewed the father of the terrorists, who told them that the FBI visited Tamerlan and in his father's presence told him they knew where he lived. To quote the article:

"The boy's father, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, said he was present when the FBI interviewed Tamerlan in Cambridge. He said they visited for what they called "prevention" activities. "They said:We know what sites you are on, we know where you are calling, we know everything about you. Everything." Mr. Tsarnaev said.

So this begs the question "whose heads are going to roll for this colossal F-up?"

Jack is Back!

DoT,

Under the Content tab in FF preferences.

Captain Hate

Thanks Rich; she's a pretty good writer.

To add to what CR said, good luck getting any comprehensibly accurate accounting out of any entity in the government/education complex.

sailor

DoT, On firefox, go to tools and click add-ons. I have Java Platform disabled as it says it is vulnerable. Have no trouble listening to things on the internet with it disabled and also no problem posting.

narciso

Congrats Captain,

sailor

What I would like to know is when is carjack man coming to the airwaves to tell his story??

centralcal

sailor: I followed your advice to DoT - I don't have Java anything in my add-ons.

Yesterday, I could comment just fine as long as I did not copy anything from Twitter. Once I pasted a full or even partial copy of a tweet I lost all comment ability. The only fix was to close the JOM tab completely, come back to the tread and type whatever I had read on twitter. Comments then went through just fine.

Quite puzzling.

Danube of Thought

Got it--Java Script Enabled has been checked all along.

Great link, Janet. He said the same thing on Fox News last night (O'Reilly show, I think).

Janet

a bit from the Carr column - "This is what I was thinking about yesterday, with much of the city under what amounted to martial law. Once more, law-abiding American citizens were paying the price for the insane immigration policies that have so damaged this society in recent years."

Massachusetts residents also take care of Obama's illegal alien Aunt & his illegal alien Uncle.
If the Gang of 8 want to take care of all these people from other countries...then do it with their own property & money. Don't make us do it.
They seem more interested in pleasing citizens of other countries than of defending our Constitution & the interests of AMERICANS.

RichatGMU

Vlad probably laughs his ass off every time he picks up Obama's Columbia thesis and the LA Times tape, while knocking back a few vodkas with his old service buds. They all are thinking "how could anyone believed the shit we put out" and "how did we get so lucky".

crossing fingers this goes through.

...""Dynamite and Agriculture"."

I have, in one of the drawers at my lab bench, an early 60's booklet titled something like "Agricultural uses of Dynamite" with nice watercolor style illustrations showing how to blow out stumps, clear a ditch etc.. Keep meaning to bring it home for my girls.

Are their any ties to this Russian speaking Imam I heard John Batchelor mention? Seems significant. It's starting to look like this whole thing (intelligence failure) can be laid squarely at Holders, and ultimately iBamas feet.

Porchlight

Congrats to your Hatette, Cap'n!

I couldn't make it work at all with IE. I tried modifying e-mail addys, leaving out links, etc. Nothing worked for more than a post or two. I finally switched to Chrome and registered/signed in to typepad, and it seems to work fine (except for my klutziness with Chrome).

Rick Ballard

"So this begs the question "whose heads are going to roll for this colossal F-up?""

Matt,

Isn't that a little harsh? After all, the FBI came "this close" to almost preventing a bombing that only killed three and maimed a few dozen. You have to admit, their complete knowledge about and profile of the perpetrator allowed them to make the correct calculation regarding flushing him out with the "blurry" photo ruse. Would he have flushed had they provided his name and the perfectly clear photos which the FBI used to determine his identity before executing the flushing ruse?

peter

In answer to a question someone posted on one of the threads here within the last 48 hours, the MIT police do carry semiautomatic weapons per the Carlos Slim's dancing chimps.

Jack is Back!

skoot,

I have the same questions regarding what the hell have been doing since 911 regarding counter-intelligence and gathering informaiton on our domestic threats beside the Tea Party and 2nd Amendment protectors. Now the information on the FBI interviewing this guy 2 years ago. Shouldn't that have been one of the first things for the FBI to do is go through all their G2 on local possible jiahdi's which evidently the Russkies thoguht Tamberlan was, etc.

I don't feel that secure and safe just because we won this one. The FBI has a lot of explaining to do not take victory laps.

SAIC-FBI

We know who you are also, pagar.

And if so much as buy an unlicensed cupcake or glass of lemonade then you will regret it.

matt

I often use the flushing ruse at home. Querida hates it when I do that and also when I leave the seat up.

Let's see. Police bomb sweep is a training exercise, which is what they would have called it regardless. Perps do a drop and run to get around it? We don't know.

FBI identifies Tamerlan as going to naughty jihadi web sites and warn his ass in no uncertain terms. Tamerlan goes to Rooshia for an extended vacay.

I would expect that he was on several watch lists and there seems to be some talk of a warning from a foreign government about Tammy's activities and possible intentions.

The devices designs came from the Jihadi cookbook, which he may have downloaded off a web site (why don't we block these?). The devices were timed very closely together. They knew what they were doing and had good mission planning. And jihadis aren't very good at exit plans as they're usually waiting on their 72 virgins.

So why didn't the FBI or DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY have a tight hand on this guy? They knew where he lived. Did they stake it out? He seems to have been a logical suspect from the outset.

Seems like with all of the billions and all of the interviews and all of the internet and wiretaps the homeland security ain't so secure.

This guy was on the radar and they still botched it.

He asked agencies to provide details on how to grant outside attorneys the security clearances necessary for them to adequately represent employees discussing classified matters with congressional investigators.

“Some witnesses may be required to retain personal counsel to represent them before the committee and in the event the agency subsequently retaliates against them for cooperating with the committee’s investigation,” he said.

“Additional witnesses may be compelled by subpoena to give testimony to the committee and can be reasonably expected to retain personal counsel at that time.”

To me preventing an attack or blowing a terrorist or his state sponsor to hell is a win.
Reactively catching a guy after he successfully pulls off a terror attack is in no way a win, especially as it was here on the home front.
It's doubly a loss that he came up on their radar and they apparently didn't do any further digging.
