They're not going to default. As for a shutdown, the media will no doubt try to blame Republicans, but will the public keep buying into that?

MarkO

"The repeal of Obamacare is a worthy and potentially popular cause, but it won’t be accomplished through sheer willpower."

That's right, kids! It's gonna take some magic. This is how it will happen:

As soon as you stop wanting something, you get it.”
― Andy Warhol

NK

Shutdown is a loser politically for Repubs--
the House Repubs should continue to do what they've been doing, pass their budget ($0) for ObummerCare enforcement, Repeal ObummerCare, No debt increase without spending cuts and NO MORE defense cuts, so now the Senate Dems have to cut the $200-300B/YEAR of STIMULUS nonsense, green energy, SNAP, etcetc. is running out even faster now that the 10y Yield is 2.6%. Cut some spending goodies to the Dem tribes, hold the line on taxes, NO grand bargains, watch Obummer massively cock up Obummercare in 2014, win the Senate, repeal the whole thing in 2015. Let Obummer veto that and destroy the Dems. Works for me, requires some patience.

Danube of Thought

According to Byron York, they can't defund it. Most of the funding is provided for in the original legislation.

If I were a GOP strategist I would make it my most urgent priority to present the outline of an alternative to Obamacare that the nation could understand and would accept. And I would run on that in 2014 and 2016.

daddy

Great News!

Democrat Mayor Filner just did a completely crappy Press Conference and said that he is not resigning! Woo Hoo!

He said he is a horrible guy and needs intense therapy and is sorry to everybody whose throat he stuck his tongue down, but he is confident that if he goes to a sex Rehab program for 2 weeks and gets briefed each night on San Diego politics, that he'll come back in 2 weeks as a Mayor that everybody can be proud of because he'll be cured and he'll be able to be the man everyone knows he can be!

What a great gift this is to Republicans! Whoopie!

NK

PS: keep up with the IRS and Benghazi Investigations, get the truth out about those. The ObummerCare debacle and IRS scandal will kill a bunch of Dems in 2014, win the Senate, Control the budget and ObummerCare repeal by reconciliation. Then Obummer has to start vetoing in 2015. His approval will be down in the 30s.

Eric in Boise

running out even faster now that the 10y Yield is 2.6%.

Yup. There isn't any reason to think it will necessarily stay there forever, either.

Arithmetic is a harsh mistress who can be placated, but will ultimately NOT be denied.

MarkO

It's a tax. Ask the Dread Pirate.

If the GOP doesn't run against it this time (now that Mitt is safely gone) they are, how do you say, Doomed.

NK

DoT-- I would rather Repubs keep ATTACKING OBummerCare so that the Dems OWN IT entirely. That's the best way to run in 2014, and when Obummer vetoes repeal, it's the best way to run against the Dems in 2016. If you're Repubs why offer something you can't pass anyway, when you can attack something the majority dislike.

NK

Ericin Boise-- Amen brother-- see Detroit.

Fox News Alert:

Congratulations to Megyn Kelly, who gave birth to her third baby, a little boy named Thatcher! He has brown hair, blue eyes, and weighed in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces. His mom describes him as "totally awesome!" Megyn and her husband, Doug Brunt, have two other children, Yates and Yardley. Kelly announced that she was pregnant on Fox in February. Welcome to the Fox family, little guy!
daddy

Yay!

Weiner's up now love taking questions from reporters asking him "How can you, Carlos Danger, continue to run for Mayor of the City City?"

Weiner sez the basic facts of all this has ben out there for a long time so this is not his or the presses decision, it is the decision of the people of New York.

Even better---now he is getting angry and snarky with reporters asking him some of these questions and is showing flashes of that wonderful malevolency that we've come to know and despise from the creepy, evil pervert.

Wish someone would ask him if he thinks Filner should resign, and why or why not.

Whoopie! What a great gift to Republicans.

Where the heck is Spitzer.

NK

Daddy-- there are no Repubs in NYC... seriously.

Danube of Thought

I see no reason at all for the GOP to provide any ammunition for the Dems to blame its failure on GOP obstruction. Let the thing fail on its own. Resist strenuously any effort to make minor adjustments; the whole thing is horribly conceived and cannot be made to work. Worst piece of legislation in my lifetime.

MarkO

"Yates and Yardley." A law firm? A poet and a perfume?

NK

Yardley cologne? last time I saw that was ..what?.. 1974?

MarkO

Canoe?

Eric in Boise

Ace just put up something on Filner's ridiculous presser. The Friday night comments section on that one ought to be a barn burner.

NK

Was Canoe by Yardley? does that still exist?

MarkO

Not by Yardley. And not Jade East. Not Jovan Musk.

Ignatz

How about Hai Karate?

NK

Ignatz-- I'm logging off now, your Hai Karate reference induced a laughing fit so intense I suffered a mild cardio infarction, so I'm off to NYU-Langone. Cheers, :)

Danube on iPad

I just hope both Filner and Weiner hang on till the bitter end. "War on women" my ass.

jimmyk

"I see no reason at all for the GOP to provide any ammunition for the Dems to blame its failure on GOP obstruction. Let the thing fail on its own."

Fair enough, but where does that lead? Rs get blamed for not passing every harebrained idea of Barry's anyway. May as well resist where possible.

NK

Jovan Musk? Jade East? you guys are killing me.. but hey.. noboby say 'Old Spice' I've used that since 1974, and I see no reason to change.

Captain Hate

I don't think a government shutdown will be as bad for Repubs as NK does; rather I think it will be much worse for the commiecrats. As always I reserve the right to reverse that if the party of stoopid does what it does best.

Jane -walk like an Egyptian

I'd just defund the IRS. Can't imagine the people won't agree with that. Let them deal with it.

jimmyk

TMI, NK.

NK

sorry, I thought Old Spice use was PG rated.

Cecil Turner

Linking Obamacare and the deficit is a bad idea for the GOP. Let the Dems own both, separately. Makes for two sticks to beat them with.

NK

'Own the deficit'-- you have to admit the Repubs have to be careful with that, the natural reaction of 47+% is RAISE TAXES to cut the deficit.

narciso

Lets surrender on a system that destroys the entire economy, that isn't meant to work.

jimmyk

the natural reaction of 47+% is RAISE TAXES *on the other 53%* to cut the deficit.

Just a clarification. And true because the Rs are so inept at this game.

centralcal

Seen on Twitter: I have had my Filner of Weiner and I am ready to Spitzer.

jimmyk

Lets surrender on a system that destroys the entire economy

There's also the problem that the more of it that gets put in place, the harder it will be to dismantle.

narciso

Why bother to correct this cretinous lie, is logic;

"the natural reaction of 47+% is RAISE TAXES"

My guess is that the 47% is going to rise as more and more employees have their hours cut, more governing bodies go bankrupt, etc.

IMO, jimmyk is correct, the more of it that is put in place the more the old system is destroyed and can never be gone back to by those who want to go back.

Jim Rhoads f/k/a vnjagvet

There is that problem, jimmyk. But there is also pretty good evidence that Obummercare is falling of its own weight. ISTM letting the bummer administration govern itself into the ground is at this point a viable alternative to symbolic legislation which will have zero chance of passage.

NK

Daddy-- you are the best... BTW I am the guy on the far lsft in my photo... Cheers!!
(PS: I can't get over the fact that there was once a product in this country called "HAI! Karate!")

daddy

Yikes, Dot!

Remember that scene in the movie Men In Black number 1, where the alien bug that has taken that guys body is wearing the skin a little crooked, so he grabs a handful of flesh at the top of his head to pull it taught and readjust it?

Well I think I just figured out the full sequence:

2)

Danube on iPad

As I understand it, their whole game is to keep the balls in the air until the first tranche of voters get subsidies, after which the thing can never be dislodged.

Porchlight

ISTM letting the bummer administration govern itself into the ground is at this point a viable alternative to symbolic legislation which will have zero chance of passage.

That's where I am. I want this thing to fail all on its own, just as written. I don't want the GOP to do anything that the Dems can hang on them as the cause of all the misery Obamacare will inflict. Not that they won't try to do that anyway, of course.

JIB

Obviously, there are few club golfers here. If there were, then you would all be singing the praises of Clubman/Pinaud Bay Rum cologne and Clubman after shave.

They even stock in the locker room at Augusta National, Shinnecock and National.

Its my personal favorite after shave. Well that and the two bottles I still have of George Trumper's Wellington cologne and after shave.

Off to Sam Snead's Tavern for an early dinner.

NK

DoT-- correct, that is the plan, PLUS in a short period of time, the insurers won't be able to profitably offer 'regular/NONCadillac' group plans so everyone gets shove into Exchanges which become a government monopoly, except for small numbers of rich and cronies who buy pricey private medical care a la UK and Canada. That is the hideous/sinister Obama plan.

Porchlight

As I understand it, their whole game is to keep the balls in the air until the first tranche of voters get subsidies, after which the thing can never be dislodged.

DoT,

Agreed, but in a potential repeal/replace situation, you could let those voters keep those subsidies (basically a Medicaid expansion) and still re-write the law and save the country from a great deal, if not all, of the ruin.

Guaranteed issue still presents a major problem but maybe a federal high-risk pool could be created. It's not like guaranteed issue promises that the cost of the policy will be low (unless the person is subsidized).

At any rate I think the subsidies at this point are the least of our problems. Far more problematic are the job killing aspects of the employer mandates, the future doctor shortage, and all the rest of the damage "the HHS Secretary shall" inflict.

NK

JiB-- fabulous references....

NK

Porch@5:11-- I agree with that. The subsidies of course should be to buy private medical services or insurance-- NO gov't exchanges!

Boy I am glad Megyn came up with a name that started with a different sound. It's so important for the children to know which child is in trouble from the beginning of uttering the name in exasperation.

The first two have to wait until mid-word to the end to know who did it. And who can say "told you so."

Marlene

OT,but I've got to post this.daddy will appreciate this story. A Maine lawyer who works for Pine Tree Legal (which advocates for low income Mainers) was attacked by a polar bear at the Torngat National Park in Newfoundland. He was with a group that included a doctor,so he was treated and then transported to Montreal. The bear attacked while he slept,he was able to fight the bear and the bear dropped him. I love the JOM lawyers,but...*insert lawyer joke here*. :)

Eric in Boise

So Spitzer, Weiner, and Filner go into a bar.

And the bartender says "Hey, Honey! Get out of here NOW!! I'll explain later!"

matt

daddy, brilliant....

With all the hoo hah it would seem that one way or another Obamacare is going to die. The original economic model was a complete fraud and now that many stakeholders are realizing they got sold out just as much as the rubes, well, they ain't too happy.

Rube Goldberg devices eventually collapse of their own volition.

Obama is making a greater fool of himself every day and has been caught out as a liar time and again. He is reduced to attributing imaginary comments to reporters and unidentified Republicans whom he still demonizes every day.

If I were Boehner I would write the president a nice letter and cc Congress and the media detailing every major lie Obama has told. If they can pass 1,000 page bills they don't read, a 30-40 page litany of deceit might just be a good read.

Porchlight

The subsidies of course should be to buy private medical services or insurance-- NO gov't exchanges!

Right. Keep the current system intact.

Porchlight

The first two have to wait until mid-word to the end to know who did it. And who can say "told you so."

Ha, you are assuming the mom can remember the child's name. In my house, the children have to wait to find out who is being addressed. Typically "Sally!" is firstborn, "Sally-Linda!" means secondborn, and "Sally-Linda-Billy!" means thirdborn. ;)

Good story Marlene. Go Bears!

Hope I didn't upset with that sad story of the lost Maine hikers/drowners yesterday, but what an awful, awful pair of terrible events for those sad women. It was almost a perfect proof of Shakespeare's old scheme, that the line between comedy and tragedy is simply whether someone died or lived after going thru the same incidents. If those 2 poor ladies had swum to safety they'd probably be yucking it up over beers and doing funny TV interviews on Leno about the worst day ever. Sadly it ended so awful. Ughh:(

I want the reporters at Filner pressers to ask Filner if Weiner should have resigned and if he should drop out now.

I want reporters at Weiner pressers to ask Weiner if Filner should resign.

And I want Spitzer asked at Spitzer pressers the same questions, and I want "Why or Why nots?" tossed at all of them until they answer.

And facetiously, in the same vein of Lance Armstrong blaming the US Postal Service for being too stupid to figure out he was taking drugs so it was their fault and not his, could Weiner sue his therapist for damages for failing to cure Weiner's sex addiction?

narciso

Seriously, how would you like to be that guy, maybe they should have visited Tiger's therapist instead, sort of a sensory overload like what happened on Burn Notice.

Speaking of Polar bears, here's an excellent short article in our Lefty Blog attacking the CBD (Center For Biological Diversity) for only coming in with their Enviro-Lawsuits after everyone else involved, (Left and Right and the Govt,) have spent years busting hump ironing out compromises:

Activists' lawsuit ignores hard-won compromise on Arctic oil project

Enter CBD with a briefcase full of documents arguing that the interests of their members were not satisfied. Hello? Where were their members when the hard work of negotiation was going on? And when was the last time anyone saw a member of the Center for Biological Diversity out on the tundra?

The author, a native, was the Mayor of the North Slope Barrow Area for 6 years.

Also worth mentioning that yesterday when I went to pick up my neighbors dog at his Anchorage Law Office for my walk, I bumped into 2 old boys standing with him as Bella bounded up and licked me all over. I was dirty and unshaven and wearing my regular hiking stuff, and I just said something quick like, "Hi boys, I'm stealing Stevie's dog," then left.

Last night my neighbor said that one of those guys was former Governor Sheffield. (I had no idea). My friend says he's an old client for years and a great dog lover, plus one of Ted Steven's best friends.

I looked him up and saw he was apparently hated for 2 things:

1) Making the whole state 1 time Zone instead of the 4 or 5 the State used to have.

2) Coming within inches of being the first Governor impeached since 1930.

Anyhow, my buddy had nothing but good stuff to say about the ol' Democrat:) He looked great to me for being 85.

BTW,

In that paper I linked there are no comments yet, but from reading the paper's Comments Policy, I don't think anyone would be able to get a comment posted on any story about Anthony Weiner:

[Our policy prohibits comments that are:

Defamatory, abusive, obscene, racist, or otherwise hateful
Excessively foul and/or vulgar
Inappropriately sexual]

How the heck anyone could even discus Weiner under those rules is beyond me.

AP: The ObamaCare insurance exchanges? Not like Travelocity.

http://hotair.com/archives/2013/07/26/ap-the-obamacare-insurance-exchanges-not-like-travelocity/

When the markets first open, Hencoski said, “there will be a significant amount of manual processing of things that will later be automated.” Translation: emails, phone calls, faxes.

This is what is going to kill Obamacare with the LIVs. It's going to be a nightmare process to get your subsidy.

The other thread (where this belongs) seems idle, so I am posting the following here. The link goes to The Blaze, but the original and full article is from Slate (of all places!).

ABC News hasn’t posted a full unedited video or transcript of the interview. The video that has been broadcast—on World News Tonight, Nightline, and Good Morning America—has been cut and spliced in different ways, often so artfully that the transitions appear continuous. So beware what you’re seeing. But the video that’s available already shows, on closer inspection, that Maddy has been manipulated and misrepresented.
