Enjoy the road, and thanks for the new thread.

Walter

...and it's such a hardship getting reliable connections in the Sea of Abaco.

Enjoy your vacation, Tom!

rse

If you are going to the Sea of Abaco say hello to Marsh Harbor and Hopetown for me.

Marlene

NASCAR fans! Sunday's race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is named the "Crown Royal Samuel Deeds 400". Samuel Deeds is a Maine native who won Crown Royal's contest,"Your Heroes Name Here." Deeds was seriously injured in Iraq saving two members of his platoon. He required 40 surgeries. After years of recovery and while on vacation,he rescued three swimmers caught in a riptide off the NC coast.Quite a guy. His mother lives locally and is having a party at a campground, with the race shown on a big screen TV. Crown Royal is donating "merchandise" to the picnic. :)

Marlene

oops...hero's.

Captain Hate

Yes typing lengthy posts from a smart phone is soooooooooooooo much fun.

Walter

Done, rse. Went to Captain Jacks for dinner and the younger son conned me into buying him a bingo card. He won $175. Torn btw letting him enjoy his victory and appropriating his profit towards the rum drinks budget.

Pro tip: everybody will fall off a paddleboard at some point. It's just plain stupid, however, to try it for the first time barefoot over sharp coral after three rum punches.

Jane

LOL Walter, sounds like your son is the saner of the two of you. Let him keep the dough.

Have a great Vacation TM!

JIB

Our friends spend their summers down at the Sea of Abaco, on their boat, with their 3 kids who are school mates of Frederick. The dad is on facebook and post a photo a day of the out islands and emerald green sea. Nice.

NK

Godspeed to the family Maguire, and enjoy the open road together.

hit and run

Take the money, Walter.

Use it as a teaching moment of the dangers of how centralized authority tends toward tyranny when drunk on power.

You can rest easy that way knowing it was for the children.

MarkO

The arbitrary superiority of personal feelings as a substitute for facts and reason:

The only minority on the all-female jury that voted to acquit George Zimmerman said today that Zimmerman "got away with murder" for killing Trayvon Martin and feels she owes an apology Martin's parents.

"You can't put the man in jail even though in our hearts we felt he was guilty," said the woman who was identified only as Juror B29 during the trial. "But we had to grab our hearts and put it aside and look at the evidence."

NK

This is interesting... Lefty Juror B29 believes GZ is morally guilty or murder, But under Fla Law, Not Guilty verdict was mandated and she so voted. Pleasantly surprised that a lefty juror followed the law (PS: JiB here's you're Fla voting problem right here, she's transplanted from ChiTown, low income MedAid, with 8 kids (single mom?): http://abcnews.go.com/US/george-zimmerman-juror-murder/story?id=19770659

centralcal

B29 was the hold out, by her own admission in her interview. Her "feelings" kept getting set back by studious review of the evidence imposed by the other jurors.

Danube on iPad

I must say, something about that killing bothered me a great deal (and still does), but the law clearly mandated an acquittal.

Q-tip

More to come on this. B29 was not the only discouraging word on the book-hawker. Juror misconduct is a nasty business for the courts. They like to keep people showing up. But if any juror was coerced or bullied by another, it will do more damage to the jury system than a misconduct charge.

MarkO

More:

Jeff Weiner ‏@JeffWeinerOS

B29 says case never should've gone to trial. "I felt like this was a publicity stunt." Feels she owes #TrayvonMartin's parents an apology.

MarkO

Followed, inexplicably, by this:

Jeff Weiner ‏@JeffWeinerOS

B29 tells @ABC she was the one who initially wanted to convict #GeorgeZimmerman on 2nd-degree murder. "I fought to the end," she says.

Ranger

Funny how demanding a studious review of the evidence gets translated into "coerced or bullied" by a leftist troll. It's as if they think the purpose of the court system is to impose the capricious will of the uninformed on the defendant, rather than to follow the law guided by evidence.

Some Guy

I must say, something about that killing bothered me a great deal

Me too.

Well, until the trial, but now not at all. I’d always assumed that the State must have some evidence that we hadn’t heard that would shed some light or undermine Zimmerman -- but they produced nada.

Porchlight

B29 doesn't sound too bright. Just saying.

NK

Juror B29 didn't miss any MENSA meetings to be on the jury. That said, I'm gratified that she took seriously the jury instructions and correctly applied the law to the facts. That's more than I can say for alot of people.

Porchlight

but they produced nada

They not only produced nothing against Zimmerman, they actively corroborated his account of the night's events. They also produced Jeantel who testified that TM was so enraged at a guy who he presumed to be gay and who he believed was pursuing him for sex, that he went nearly all the way home before he decided to go back and beat the crap out of the creepy ass-cracker.

Q-tip

She was smart enough not to seek a book deal.

Porchlight

She was smart enough not to seek a book deal.

Or publishers were smart enough not to seek one with her.

bgates

Funny how demanding a studious review of the evidence gets translated into "coerced or bullied"

Puts an interesting spin on the No Bullying campaign.

Some Guy

stop it

narciso

Words don't mean anything apparently, OJ, got away with murder, he butchered two people quite deliberately.

MarkO

I refuse to be bullied by facts, logic, law, common sense or self-preservation. I have my feelings to keep me warm.

DrJ

Off.

bgates

something about that killing bothered me a great deal

At what point did Zimmerman make a mistake?

When he got out of his truck inside the housing complex where he lived?
When he started walking through the housing complex where he lived?
When he made eye contact with a stranger in the housing complex where he lived?
When he got knocked to the ground by a younger guy with a longer reach?
When he defended himself with the last option available to him?

daddy

Another day, another dollar, another Democrat lies to us:

RANGEL ON HUMA: 'I DON'T RECALL SEEING A WIFE LOOKING AND FEELING SO SAD AND EMBARRASSED'

Jane -walk like an Egyptian

Funny how demanding a studious review of the evidence gets translated into "coerced or bullied"

I noticed that too.

Q-tip

"Words don't mean anything apparently, OJ, got away with murder, he butchered two people quite deliberately."

The prosecution was just as inept. But, of course the verdict was called 'jury nullification' rather than an objectivist's view. Emotion played absolutely NO part on either side. We just felt he was guilty, and that's a tactile response to the gloves.

Porchlight

Let me say for the record that the only thing that bothers me about this killing is the national Lynch Zimmerman campaign from the media, race hustlers, White House, DOJ, assorted leftists, "black community," and LIVs that was the direct result of Obama's perceived need to rally the FL base in 2012.

boris

"the national Lynch Zimmerman campaign ..."

Yes there is something quite evil when the family rescued by GZ have to avoid the public eye.

daddy

2 stories at Instapundit show us just how interested the Administration is on ensuring everyone gets to participate in the Democratic process:

1) Holder to challenge Texas Law in order to ensure that all US citizens get to participate in the Political Process

2) Obama yesterday refuses to allow College Republican Students to attend Obama's speech on their very own campus.

Q-tip

The McMartin trial was another LA example of how little emotion plays in our court system. Thorough and justice oriented public service is a hallmark of any DA's office.(snort!)

Danube on iPad

"At what point did Zimmerman make a mistake?"

I didn't say he made a mistake, I said something about it bothers me. Maybe it's that he strapped on a locked-and-loaded 9mm to go to the Target store. Perfectly legal, but it creeps me out a little

narciso

And the Fusters and the Amiraults, but that wasn't about evidence, Reno earned her stripes in the former, and Coakley in the second.

boris

But an empty 9mm would have been okay?

Captain Hate

Obama yesterday refuses to allow College Republican Students to attend Obama's speech on their very own campus.

It sounds like it was a school or Secret Service decision but what an insult to the concept of an open forum for exchanging ideas. The University of Central Missouri owes everybody an explanation for this. At least the students didn't have their intelligence insulted by another pedestrian recitation of lies by Ear Leader.

daddy

Victor Davis Hanson supposed to be up on hour 2 of Dennis Miler. Check your tape delay.

Q-tip

They were costumed in TeaParty garb.

Some leftist's with Che Guevara T-shirts were also deemed a threat.

Frau Dinkelbrot

Are those MO Republican college students--ten in number and deemed security risks--also required to wear a scarlet or yellow "R" on their lapels?
Pfui!

rse

JIB-

Frederick would like Tahiti Beach further down Elbow Cay from Hopetown (the hurricane hole with the famous candy striped lighthouse).

The water is clear and you can see the starfish walking around in the sand.

I still remember the Diva being 3 and another little boy on the beach was German and he had on Euro toddler beach attire. Nada. "Where's the little boy's swimsuit mom?"

Walter- my kids were on the boat we had rented and I was last to get on and they started rocking it for fun. I had a choice between a painful split and going in the water. For years my kids still giggled about mom going in the water. I wish I had at least had a few Goombay Smashes so that it wasn't such a vibrant memory.

Captain Hate

Some leftist's with Che Guevara T-shirts were also deemed a threat.

Do you have a link for that because I couldn't find that in the article daddy provided. This was in it:

The small group of College Republicans were confused as to why such extreme security precautions were directed at them – but not at the 2,500 other audience members who were granted admission to the event

Frau Dinkelbrot

JOM's TM: Have a wonderful trip, gracious host. Don't worry about us. I'm sure we basement folk will behave and keep the party noise at an acceptable level. We haven't had the police called before.

rse

Oh, and if you have never seen the famous picture of Hurricane Floyd right before it hit Elbow Cay, look it up. It is as tight an eye as I have ever seen. Unbelievable damage.

cathy_f
I must say, something about that killing bothered me a great deal
What, that just once, it was the thug who got killed rather than doing the killing?

In the last 17 months there have been several dozen people attacked out of the blue by total strangers screaming about "justice for Trayvon" who killed or severely injured their victims. They are apparently bothered a great deal that Trayvon didn't succeed in killing or maiming a creepy ass cracker, and see "justice" in making up for his failure.

Marlene

The BDN has a report from Reuters that Quebec provincial police are executing a search warrant at the Farnham,Quebec office of Montreal,Maine and Atlantic Railway. Police raided the office in search of evidence related to the investigation.

NK

Personally, my reaction remains that the GZ/TM killing was a pitiful tragedy where 2 young men managed to cross paths in a place both were lawfully entitled to be, and one winds up shot dead and the other's life is ruined. Tragic, absurd and entirely avoidable tragedy. No good came of it, only race hustling profiteering.

Q-tip

sorry capitan. Snark doesn't translate well. It was a nod to Obama's relentless hatred of what people call his 'base' (snort!)

daddy

Intelligent banter between Dennis and VDH, and VDH continues to tell the truth.

On Rachel Jenteal:

VDH: Rachel Jenteal was functionally illiterate... I taught for 21 years at fresno State. I had some brilliant African American students. I had some brilliant Hispanic students. I had brilliant students of all ethnic backgrounds. Rachel Jenteal would not have been one of those.

I suspect VDH will get plenty of incoming Racism allegations for that from the usual suspects.

Porchlight

Maybe it's that he strapped on a locked-and-loaded 9mm to go to the Target store.

Maybe you would have too, if you lived in that neighborhood at that time. Remember there had been a home invasion at a neighbor's unit just six weeks earlier. That was just one of many robberies and burglaries that had taken place in the complex since Zimmerman moved there.

Frau Dinkelbrot

No link found yet for the student wearing a Che T shirt not admitted to the preezy's blather. Natl. Review suggested that next time, the students wear that very shirt or a cap with "Obama Girl" on it.

Has a Che shirt ever been judged offensive by the dems?

Porchlight

Haven't started catch-up yet, so apologies if you've already covered this comment made by Anthony Weiner today, but the wording strikes me as simply another lie from another Democrat:

(CBSNewYork/AP) – Democratic Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner admitted Thursday to having additional sexting partners after he resigned from Congress following the bombshell revelations of his tawdry chats with a 22-year-old...

“I don’t believe I had any more than three,” said Weiner.

Anybody believe him? I don't.

But just consider the wording of that. It allows him to come back in future and modify whatever number eventually raises it's ugly head, while claiming he was not lying because he can say he was honestly talking about what he "believed" at the time, etc.

centralcal

I was, at first, in the tragedy for both category, until I watched the entire trial.

The frightened "child" - okay the teen:

1. he is scared or edgy because some stranger is "following" him or checking him out. He's got a cell phone and ear buds to keep his hands free - he could and should have called 911. He didn't.

2. he is (at one point in time) practically at the door of the home where he was staying and could have gone inside, locked the door, and called 911 from there. He didn't.

3. once the altercation started and he was straddling and punching and slamming his "stalker," he could have responded loudly to John Goode when he appeared and yelled for help or for someone to call the police or some how indicate he was trying to subdue this person who was frightening him. He didn't.

Trayvon Martin did NOT do one thing to indicate he was in fear and needed help.

Janet

An un-PC post -
I bought a pack of American Spirit cigarettes today (the menthol mellow ones)

So good....I'm not kidding. I'm blaming Jane for this cause her friend from Sturbridge first mentioned them to me.

jimmyk

Maybe it's that he strapped on a locked-and-loaded 9mm to go to the Target store.

Good thing he did, no? Or he might have been a homicide victim that we never would have heard about.

Now there are those who speculate that he would have been more "cautious" about the infamous "getting out of his truck," had he not been armed. I think that is complete speculation and 20-20 hindsight, as there was about as much chance of that ending up in a violent confrontation as there was when he rescued that family from the overturned SUV. I would guess he would have done the same thing had he not been armed, but might have ended up dead or permanently brain-damaged.

Janet

This Powerline post was really good on the gun Zimmerman carried - http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2013/07/stephen-hunter-comments-on-the-george-zimmerman-verdict-and-guns.php

I would not be surprised if some experienced lawyers have had a number of clients who's version of certain events turned out to be "self serving". They may expect that from clients and have found it wise to adjust what they think really happened accordingly.

Pure speculation on my part, but it would explain some otherwise puzzling takes on the incident.

matt

Turns out the Carlos Danger has a foot fetish according to Fox News, who have the sexting photos from the girl. The man is a freak. He must have loved Hillary's cankles.

I think Mr. Weiner's campaign is suffering severe electile dysfunction.

Janet

...and as inappropriate as it is...I appreciate the site that broke the story - The Dirty - for posting the uncovered pics of Weiner's business. Why protect him at all?

I was glad that that one guy yelled out, "bye-bye pervert" at his resignation in 2011...forever ruining a "poor, really sorry" Rep. Weiner clip.

Jane -walk like an Egyptian

I miss Chubby too. She gave me the best make-up tip I've ever heard.

That's funny Janet. What makes them "sooo good"?

Some Guy

Maybe it's that he strapped on a locked-and-loaded 9mm to go to the Target store. Perfectly legal, but it creeps me out a little

I’m not an expert, and any out there please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the two safest modes of concealed carry are “never” or “always”. It’s the “sometimes” or “depends” that may lead to wayward consequences. This makes sense from a human behavior standpoint, if you only carry when you think there is a good reason to, you may be a hammer looking for a nail.

Rather than creepy, it strikes me as consistent with being a responsible CCW individual.

Good points on Huma today on Dennis Miller's Show. (not verbatim)

He started off his comments comparing the Left's fawning "Brilliance" of Huma to their portrayal of Sarah Palin, and how odd that to earn the sobriquet "brilliant" by the Left is if you enable your husband to continue to get away with texting his schlong to anonymous 22 year olds all over the Internet.

But ultimately Dennis said that there are only 2 possibilities: Either Huma knows all about Weiner's problems and is okay with it, which is unsettling, or she is completely clueless about her husbands problems, which is just as unsettling.

Porchlight

I've been smoking American Spirits for about 15 years, Janet, but have never tried the menthol. Actually recently I switched to Nat Sherman Naturals because they seem to go stale more slowly (I only smoke once or twice/week).

jimmyk

The man is a freak.

Not to engage in armchair psychoanalysis, but I suspect he's not that unhappy at his "stuff" going public, that he's a would be exhibitionist who as a public figure can't go around in a trench coat flashing young women, so he does this, knowing that it's almost certainly going to go viral. Let's for sure elect him mayor.

Porchlight

Calvin is still available.

Just so. Thanks for the reminder, Frau!

jimmyk

This makes sense from a human behavior standpoint, if you only carry when you think there is a good reason to, you may be a hammer looking for a nail.

Good point, SG.

Related to this, I recall at some point reading that GZ claimed he had forgotten he was armed. Seems a bit hard to believe, but if it's something you do as a matter of course, it's possible he wasn't overtly aware of it.

Janet

What makes them "sooo good"?

very smooth. They burn slow so they don't burn away when I'm not puffing on them (which is rare).

Anyway...don't anyone START smoking. That post was just for the JOM addict community.

jimmyk

Or to put it in coherent English: if it's something *he did* as a matter of course...

Sandy Daze

Zimmerman is a sheepdog. Samuel Deeds is a sheep dog.

There are three type of people in the world--okay, I am profiling--

Sheepdogs
Sheep
Wolves

TM was not a sheepdog, he was not a bleating lamb.

~~

What am I? You may be wondering, what are you?

I ask God, I ask myself all the time, please let me be worthy to the challenge.

I thank God for the sheepdogs amongst us.

I bet Dana & Mark Gerstle are glad that a sheepdog found them, and not a wolf.

Trayvon's daddy's been inducted into the Race Hustler's Hall of Fame. With a trademarked dead son, there's no telling how big an empire he can build.

Some Guy

Related to this, I recall at some point reading that GZ claimed he had forgotten he was armed. Seems a bit hard to believe, but if it's something you do as a matter of course, it's possible he wasn't overtly aware of it.

How many times have we all forgotten that we have a 'concealed carry' phone? It's pretty common to think "I should have taken a photo of that" or "I could have just texted and asked" a minute or two after the fact. When we are busy reacting to the circumstances, it's easy to forget what tools are at our fingertips.

Janet

Actually recently I switched to Nat Sherman Naturals

I'll have to try them next. (wrote the name down). I'm a connoisseur of exactly nothing. :( So gonna try some different cigs.

Sandy Daze

Regarding Huma, there is another explanation.

She is there to further the Muslim Brotherhood's penetration into the American governing class. In that regard, she is what in earlier times we might have called a spy, who is willing to accept any indignity that will further the cause of the MB.

Andrew McCarthy details all of the connections hin the Huma Unmentionables.

peter

Please stop talking about how great cigarettes are because even though I quit over 25 years ago, I still have the urge. Glad they don't make Balkan Sobranies anymore. Loved those little metal boxes.

Danube on iPad

I don't know, Some Guy. I'm in CA, so there's no way I'll ever have a concealed carry permit. Bit if I did, I believe I'd only carry when I thought there was a higher-than-normal risk of trouble, and trust in my judgment to avoid being a hammer looking for a nail. Maybe, as Porch suggests, if I lived in that neighborhood that would be all the time.

But as I say, I'd have voted to acquit.

daddy

Cross-posting from 2 threads back.

Well I guess I'm just naturally suspicious, when it comes to trains in Spain,

The latest seems to be that the driver was speeding,

Narciso and JimmyK,

Thats the same thing that happened in Japan in 2005. I recall this one for some reason (I was probably over there at the time), but the cause was definitively proven that it was the driver exceeding the proper speed in taking a curve.

Amagasaki rail crash---107 deaths

Type of incident: Derailment
Cause: Overspeed on curve arising from harsh penalties for lateness; retraining system

Sandy Daze

Regarding the train...

Enhanced still photo of the 0.25-second prior to yesterday’s Spanish train derailment, taken from a raw video feed. Note the electrical ‘flash’, probably caused by a crossover of the train’s electrical contact and a detonation circuit rigged to the overhead power lines. The video clearly shows that the derailment occurred 1-2 cars after the locomotive, not at the locomotive, and in sequence with the flash. It also clearly shows lateral blast effects visible after the flash, but before the derailment occurs.

This makes three commuter trains in the last month or so; US, France, and now Spain.

Hmmm.

Porchlight

When Kim Jong Il is in a bad mood he beats his press corps with bundles of Obama's press clippings, shouting "why can't you guys write stuff like this?"

-me, June 28, 2011.

"President Obama said reporters praise his economic proposals as 'great' and tell him they are 'all good ideas,' " TheHill.com notes in a report on yesterday's speech. No doubt the guys at the Korean Central News Agency say similar things about Kim Jong-un's ideas, although one is more inclined to question the latter's sincerity as opposed to their intelligence.

Sandy Daze,I mentioned this morning that our daughter and her boyfriend will be in Europe next month. So,I really hope the train is called the Glacier Express because it moves at a glacial pace!

daddy

We are enjoying the thrill of the open road

TM,

Fer Gawd's sake, whatever you do, don't drive to Maine!!!

The women apparently were returning late to Stiner’s home after getting lost in the fog earlier in the day while hiking ...Hanscom used an ATV to travel along the shore and found the (lost) women (hikers) and their dog. He drove them to a nearby home and then wardens brought them to their vehicle, which was in the state park. They were last seen driving toward the road...

Then they got in their car and drove off...and in the fog turned the wrong way off a boat-ramp and drowned in the ocean.

matt

The train was a few minutes out of the main Santiago station and was hauling ass. Usually 2-3 minutes out is when the train begins to decelerate. There is something wrong here that has not yet been disclosed. Pulling in towards the station at double the normal speed is insane.

NK

sandy we love you, but you're off base on the 'flash'. The flash is electrical arcing as the train's pantograph breaks connection with the overhead cantenary wires-- on this train configuration the pantograph is NOT on the head locomotive car, it's on a trailing passenger car, that's why the flash is aft of the engine car. derailment aft of the engine-- many possible explanations of that, in fact a curve derailment is most likely to happen at the linkage points of the trailing higher COG passenger cars, than the leading heavier locomotive car. TBD.

narciso

More slapping with a wet fish;

National Journal's Norm Ornstein published a column yesterday titled "The Unprecedented--and Contemptible--Attempts to Sabotage Obamacare." Although allowing that opposition to ObamaCare is "not treasonous"--a good thing, as a substantial majority of Americans would be traitors if it were--it is "sharply beneath any reasonable standards of elected officials." (What does "sharply beneath" even mean?)

Marlene

Very sad, daddy. One of the women was five months pregnant. The tide is very strong up there.

NK

Narciso@5:44-- as you've pointed out many times, heavy flack means we are right over the target. Norm Ornstein knows the Obamacare implementation will be a chaotic disaster, so blame the conservatives ASAP.
