Obama's giving a speech? Another one? Wow. Who'd have guessed. Then again, it's too dark for golf.

fdcol63

It'll be just as inane and embarrassing as his last one.

I'm prepared to be impressed with the magnanimity with which he assigns responsibility for this once in a lifetime display of the professionalism of the administration foreign policy team.

daddy

Just for interest, is anyone in the news mentioning possible terrorist activity expected for tomorrow, since it is obviously the anniversary of 9/11 and Benghazi?

I'm not hearing any. I do know via my job we have received within the last 4 days advisories about Security alerts for Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq and Lebanon, but nothing specific.

Usually just around 9/11 anniversary time something happens in India, but all the Times of India has today is a story that Pakistan freed seven Afghan Taliban leaders on Saturday, and that they just decided:Pakistan to free top Taliban prisoner Mullah Baradar.

Do you guys think that possibly the Muslim Brotherhood/Hezbollah etc, have been advised to sit still terror bombing-wise to see if we can defeat ourselves this 9/11 Anniversary without any of their bombings gumming up the works?

And speaking of driving a Coupe de Gras, it's hard to beat this fun story:

Neil Young’s Electric Car Breaks Down, Left ‘Helpless’ on California Highway

Neil Young, a high-profile proponent of cars powered by alternative fuels, was recently stranded on the highway when his own $1 million biomass-powered hybrid car broke down.

California highway patrol officers found the Canadian rocker stranded on the side of a road near Donner Summit, Calif.

Young was on his way to an environmentalist festival...

Ha Ha Ha!

I'm going to guess at two overarching themes.

Any good stuff he did.
Any bad, he didn't do that, the world did.

"What could be worse for America's standing in the world than a Congress refusing to support a President's proposal for military action against a rogue regime that used WMD? Here's one idea: A U.S. President letting that rogue be rescued from military punishment by the country that has protected the rogue all along.

"That's where President Obama now finds himself on Syria after he embraced Russian President Vladimir Putin's offer to take custody of Bashar Assad's chemical weapons. The move may rescue Mr. Obama and Congress from the political agony of a vote on a resolution to authorize a military strike on Syria. But the diplomatic souk is now open, and Mr. Obama has turned himself into one of the junior camel traders."

Wherein Pres. Weak Horse™, through his brilliant leadership and moral superiority, single-handedly faces down the use of chemical weapons.

He will claim credit for devising the strategic initiative to disarm Syria of its CW's, and portray himself as the great international leader, standing up to evil.

He will pretend he never ignored his responsibilities these past two years, during previous uses of CW. He will act as if he has not supported al-Qaeda affiliated rebels in Syria, after the debacle of helping bring the Muslim Brotherhood to power in Egypt.

All he has accomplished to date is to show his ineptitude, his weakness, and to accomplish the aims of the Russians: Assad stays in office, and the Russians retain their naval base at Tartus.

daddy

My fellow Americans...

Assad is a bad guy. We've worked to support the moderate opposition.
We cannot resolve someone else's civil war thru force.

But that changed when he gassed a thousand people with poison gas. We saw the video of this crime against humanity.

In WW1 many died of poison gas. In WW2 the Nazi's used them. Now the Congress and 98& of humanity joined to say these weapons are unacceptable. We know the Assad regime was responsible. We know they gav out gasmasks to their troops, and then launched the rockets with the gas, and then the hospitals filled. We know it was serin gas.

Dictators depend on the rest of the world to look the other way. The question now is what the world is prepared to do bout it.

If we fail to act it will be a threat to our national security. If we do not act we will have our troops facing poison gas on the battlefield, and if we don't stand to stop it it will be used in Mid eat battlefields.

We shoild not accept this. This is why I determine it is in the National security interests of the US to strike Assads poison gas assets. That is my opinion as President. But I also thought it was my job to ask Congress for the authorization to make those strikes.

I know it is not a popular thing to ask for military authorization, especially since I have spent so much time stopping our overseas wars. Let me read some letters you have sent to me.

I will not put American boots on the ground in DSyria, nor pursue a long time operation. This will be a quick short action.

The US military does not do pinpricks. We will send a message to Assad. We will not remove him as a dictator---we learned that that does not work in Iraq.

Assad can not really harm our military, and Israel is strong enough to defend itself. But Al Quada will get stronger in Syria if we do not punish Assad.

Finally, might this lead to other countries. Should we be the world's policeman? No. We have tried sanctions, but he still used chemical weapons.

However, Russia has joined in helping us to deal with this issue diplomatically. I have asked for Congress to delay their vote as Diplomacy continues. We will continue to rally for support around the world who agree we need to respond militarily if diplomacy fails,

And I thank our military.

My fellow Americans, for decades we have been the international leaders. You on the right must reconcile your beliefs with what I want to do and you on the left must look at the videos and say can we allow this. You must ask yourself what kind of world will we live in if we choose to allow dictators to use poison gas and we look the other way?

With modest action we can stop children from being gassed form poison gas. That is what makes us different.

Thank you. God Bless America.

IF - and that's a *BIG* "if" - Pres. Weak Horse™ was *really* concerned over Assad's use of CW's, he would have prepared a UN resolution sometime in the past two years, calling for the international community to take action against CW use in Syria.

He has done *nothing* in the UN regarding the use of CW's in Syria.

The MFM will reliably fail, once again, to report this apparent discrepancy between what Pres. Weak Horse™ says and what he has done.

Rand Paul,

I see no clear ally on either side and I se no compelling American interest. It is a violation of international Law. If Assad is responsible he deserves death for this. To my mind Obama is arguing for stalemate and I do not see an American objective in going for stalemate.

You guys are all probably watching him also.

It is interesting to me that immediately FOX now goes to Rand Paul and not to McCain and Lindsay Graham or anyone else for that matter. Like Rand or not, he seems to be the Senator gaining "gravitas" as the outspoken US Republican forcefully stating his opinion. He does have his eye on the Presidency, as is obvious from a question he just answered to Bret Baire.

Allen West
President Obama stated at the end of his 16 minute speech, "terrible things happen across the globe….we should act, that's what makes America exceptional." I find his words utterly disgusting because tomorrow we will remember four Americans who were abandoned by President Obama to die in Libya. I found no righteous indignation and call for a moral obligation to avenge and punish their islamic terrorist murderers - matter of fact, Obama called it a "phony scandal." Christians are being butchered daily, where is his outrage? Israel is taking rocket and missile fire, where is his outrage? Some 100,000 Syrians had been killed by conventional munitions, and this was not the first chemical attack, where was his outrage? Obama has shown incompetence and weakness and has not presented a credible threat to Assad and Putin. If he wanted to respond he could have, God knows he did not seek congressional approval for Libya. He has been strategically outmaneuvered by Putin, lost the initiative, and allowed Putin to look like a statesman while he looks like a confused community organizer.

Rand is up and he is directly going against Obama's points, pretty much one by one.

He is tho' giving the President kudo's for recognizing that as the Commander in Chief he has a Constitutional responsibility to come to Congress for a vote. Then he says that Obama does not personally believe that. Rand says he will vote NO unless there is a compelling American interest.

Gretta said Rand elected to do that speech on his own, and was not picked by the Repub's to do that speech.

I thought he did a good job. If nothing else I think Rand Paul will appeal to college kids, which I definitely see as a plus for a guy with an "R" behind his name.

Karl Rove BTW is disagreeing with many of Rand Paul's points.

Quiz Time: Who just admitted defeat in the NY Mayors race?

Here's a tip:

Jim Miller

In early returns, Democratic state senate president John Morse is trailing in his recall election. (The other Democratic state senator, who represents a more Democratic district, is leading in her race.)

If he is removed, that won't tip the balance in the Colorado state senate, but it will reduce the Democrats to a 19-16 majority, so the Republicans would only have to gain two seats, net, in the next election, to take control.

I don't know what the prospects for that are. My 2012 Almanac of American Politics says that Republicans had a registration lead, 874,962-612,389, with 789,851 independents.

But I have also seen, recently, the claim that the Democrats had gerrymandered the state very effectively.

daddy

And this looks promising for opponents of Client number 9:

If it's cut off in the pic, it reads:
Stringer 66%
Spitzer 34%

Jim Miller

Correction: A registration lead of 874,962-812,3989.

narciso

Well he did have Scarlett Johansn campaigning for him, Stringer;

Jim Miller

One more try: 874,962-812,389

So what does Weiner do know? I don't think he is psychologically capable of not seeking the limelight. But would MSNBC or CNN or any other network be so foolish as to actually offer him a show or a radio gig? Beats me.

And it seems to me that Huma's only chances for media redemption now are to dump the guy, or stay in the shadows and hitch a ride on Hillary's Team---but that raises the question of will Team Hillary consider her now such damaged goods that they should toss her under the bus for the sake of electability?
