MarkO

When I see Brazil nuts, I think racist.

hit and run

Sunday's already over?

MarkO

I decry the false choice:

"First, nuts may be taking the place of other high-calorie snacks, like chips, cookies and candy."

NK(withnewsoftware)

"Holiday" prep. Have I correctly heard in the background that walmarts is doing "Christmas" commercials on TV? If yes, smart move by them, I think Christmas gift shoppers are disgusted with the 'Holiday' BS-- which holiday, Orthodox St Nicholas Feast Day?

Old Lurker

NK go look at the cartoon on Lucianne.com.

clarice

I like costco's macadamia covered with caramel and chocolate.D oes that count?

Thomas Collins

How about a thread on foods we like that the current consensus says are good for you, and those frowned upon by the current consensus?

My "good" list would include saltless cashews, tabooleh, Armenian cracker bread and roasted veggies.

My "bad" list would include egg salad drenched with mayo, my special meat sauce made with no-lean hamburger, Haagen Dazs Rum Raisin Ice Cream, Haagen-Dazs Coffee Ice Cream, and salted cashews.

I guess broiled bluefish could be on either list depending on one's view of the fat content of bluefish or the fact that my special bluefish sauce includes lime juice, lemon juice, butter, spices and tomato sauce.

Similarly, whole milk yogurt could end up on either list, depending on which supposed expert currently holds sway.

I'm with MarkO: no false choices in food! Tabooleh and roasted mushrooms washed down with red wine and Haagen-Dazs ice cream and coffee with cream rocks!

Old Lurker

Merry Christmas from your big brother:

"The FBI can secretly activate a computer’s webcam to spy on an individual without turning on the indicator light, a former official revealed to the Washington Post in an article published Friday.

According to the Washington Post’s account of what Marcus Thomas — former assistant director of the FBI’s Operational Technology Division in Quantico — said, “The FBI has been able to covertly activate a computer’s camera — without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording — for several years, and has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigations."

Dave (in MA)
And you can't think of Brazil nuts without thinking of Amazon.
And if you're of a certain age, you probably can't think of them without an old politically-incorrect term coming to mind.
James D.

OL, I especially love this:

has used that technique mainly in terrorism cases or the most serious criminal investigation

"Mainly." I wonder what that means? What percentage is "mainly?" And what sort of cases was it used for that weren't terrorism or serious criminal investigations?

Looking into Tea Party groups? 2nd Amendment supporters? Conservative PAC's?

Exes of folks in the Operational Technology Divison, or men/women they had crushes on? Or neighbors they didn't like for some reason?

Dave (in MA)

Does this count?

Old Lurker

James, then try the LUN if the Webcam thing didn't scare you.

rse

GMax-

I just got back from that area yesterday afternoon. You really should see the new Havana Beach bar and setup at the hotel that has opened since you visited Paradis.

http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/willingness-to-make-personal-sacrifice-for-the-good-of-the-whole-to-become-an-integral-component-of-student-identity/

is the new post. Yes that is a quote from the new vision of civics education.

Except it was also around in the 70s but no one but the radicals knew it.

Porchlight

I would definitely put your bluefish recipe in the "good" list, TC!

Trader Joe's Marcona almonds with rosemary are divine:

They come in tiny packages b/c they're expensive (even for TJ's) and sinfully rich. Perfect for parties.

You can find them on Amazon and ebay if you don't have a Trader Joe's near you.

Ignatz

Venezuela; the near term future of the US if the Dems have their way.

Old Lurker

Lest you still have doubts:

"Former Secretary of State Colin Powell believes the United States should have a socialized, single-payer healthcare system similar to those in Canada and Europe. “I think universal health care is one of the things we should really be focused on, and I hope that will happen,” Powell reportedly said last week. “Whether it’s Obamacare, or son of Obamacare, I don’t care. As long as we get it done.”

Ignatz

BTW, cashews without salt are a crime against humanity.

Danube on iPad

Would "surrender" do?

"Although he didn´t call it a 'retreat,' Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that all American troops will have to leave Afghanistan in 2014 unless Afghan President Hamid Karzai signs a security agreement with the United States. 'Well, you can use any term you want, ´"retreat´" or ´"not renewing our efforts here post-2014.´" You can say it any way you want. But what I´m saying is, unless we have the security of an agreement to protect our forces, then we´ll have no choice. We´ll -- we will not be able to stay,' Hagel told CBS News State Department correspondent Margaret Brennan."

NK(withnewsoftware)

“Whether it’s Obamacare, or son of Obamacare, I don’t care. As long as we get it done.” Powell doesn't add: And as long as super rich guys like me can go outside the socialized system and buy whatever healthcare we want. What a prat he is is, spoiled bastard.

Ignatz

--“Whether it’s Obamacare, or son of Obamacare, I don’t care.......”

Presumably that use of O-care is MSNBC approved because Colon is black, sort of.

Ignatz

crud

DrJ

Off.

Old Lurker

Iggy, Mrs. L keeps trying to "help" me.

When she buys nuts without salt, I add popcorn salt. Problem solved.

When she tries to mix decaf beans in with the real coffee beans in our coffee machine, I simply add no-doz pills to the mix.

Beasts of England

In a move that would make Ty Webb proud, I called a stock transfer agent a moment ago to change my address and the agent said 'You have some un-cashed dividend checks, sir.' I ask how much they totaled and she told me, adding 'Merry Christmas!'

I guess Ty would have said 'You keep them.'

Porchlight

Mr. Porch bought low-fat, low-salt bagged popcorn last week by mistake. It was 100% not worth eating. And I tried several times.

Old Lurker

Might as well just eat the foam stuff in the amazon boxes.

Porchlight

Exactly, OL. Or pack boxes with the popcorn.

Danube on iPad

Fat and salt make things taste good.

MarkO

Don't forget to add sugar.

Miss Marple

Porchlight,

I would have doctored the stuff up with melted butter and salt. LOL!

Marlene

My maternal grandmother lived in Sacramento and years ago, around this time in year, she would send my mother a huge container of walnuts. We would try to sneak handfuls to snack on and Mom would say, those walnuts are for baking! I think we kids were amazed that nuts grew on trees and were sent all the way from California to New Hampshire.

cathyf

Oooo... That gives me an idea.... I call BOE's stock transfer agent pretending to be him and change his address to mine, and then they'll send ME the dividends!

Captain Hate

Clarice's Pieces from yesterday has been linked in the AoS sidebar.

rich@gmu

and then I pretend to be cathyf and change her address to mine and volia...they'll send me the dividend checks.

yikes. afternoon all, at least the ice is melting.

rich@gmu

that was a great piece ace had with the macguffin and the hero's journey...think it i recurring theme there but it was a good effort.

which act is this play in again?

Porchlight

I should have, Miss Marple, but I kept picking it up thinking "this time it will taste good" and it kept not tasting good. Then I threw it in the trash. :)

Porchlight

should have just fed the birds with it, but I was annoyed and not thinking.

Porchlight

anonamom,

That video is wonderful and inspiring! Thanks!

Beasts of England

@cathyf, and then later rich - She asked me some pretty good security questions. None of the usual Father's middle name stuff. I missed one of them (I never can remember if I answered Sea Island or The Cloister for my honeymoon question).

Hey, y'all have a 50/50 chance at one of the answers now! Good luck! All you have to do now is figure out my transfer agent, the security in question, and my real name! ;)

The NSA.

Hey Beasts;

check, check and check! Thanks, the shutdown is making the holidays a bit lite. And can you move your monitor a bit to the right so we can get a better view. Smile more.

Porchlight

Oh goodness. The woman in the video is only 26 years old. No wonder it only took her a year. When I was that age all I had to do to lose 10 pounds was think about it. ;)

Beasts of England

Damn you NSA!

::smiles more::

cindyk

My 80 yr-old mom (who has a fixation on low fat, no sugar, super tiny portions), now serves breakfast muffins that she has my step-dad pick up each morning from the local convenience store/gas station. YUCK! Go figure.

Miss Marple

This may affect someone here or a relative. This is from Forbes, and a discussion about how many higher-priced meds won't be covered under Obamacare.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottgottlieb/2013/12/09/no-you-cant-keep-your-drugs-either-under-obamacare/

AliceH

wow, MM. Awful! I just tweeted your link.

The NSA.

That's better.

Miss Marple

Thanks, AliceH. I have a good friend with MS and this is going to affect her.

Every time we hear about the bad things in Obamacare I think "Well, this is now the end of the bad news."

And then there is MORE!

The NSA.

>>>Can Democrats Make 2014 About the Minimum Wage?<<<

an answer to a question nobody is asking.

rich@gmu

oops...

that was questions nobody is asking.

anonamom

Porch, I'm sure you noticed her face. As wonderful as what was happening to her outside was, the obvious transformation of her "insides" was even better.

Porchlight

The Obamacare bad news is literally never ending.

Thomas Collins

Exams over, rich@gmu?

Porchlight

Yes, anonamom, her smile just got bigger and bigger! And she faced the camera more.

Tonal

Gazoogle helps translate Palin;

reading days today and tomorrow. one is on Thursday, next Monday, and a project due Friday.

making study guides and office visits today and tomorrow.

oddly the material on Keynesianism is what I missed on my last econ exam

clarice

You can get marcona almonds (sans rosemary but still very good) at a very good price at Costco.

Ignatz

--womans-transformation-ketogenic-diet-88-lbs-lost-5-seconds--

If she'd stayed on that diet another seven or eight seconds...poof!

clarice

Heh--And that's before vanishing cream.

Rick Ballard

"Well, this is now the end of the bad news."

Miss Marple,

We're still looking at the peeling veneer. We haven't even touched the dry rot, let alone the termite nest at the core.

The veneer won't be completely peeled away until April 1st.

daddy

QuizTime: How do you get fired from Al Jazeera?

Answer: Questioning the Objectivity of Yasser Arafat Coverage.

Captain Hate

Shocking that al-Jizz doesn't look at the real cause of Arafish's death. Why it's almost like they have an agenda...

Jack is Back!

So, :), Fox has decided to add another group to its mix of conservative and libertarian POV's: Independents.

Debuts tonight on FBN at 9:00pm

Will be interesting to see the numbers they get.

BTW, I am a pistachio man. I eat a small bowl with my pre-dinner wine usually while watching The Five. Its also my favorite ice cream whenever i have ice cream.

daddy

JimmyK,

The Morning Call newspaper for Lehigh Valley just published a story on the 50th Anniversary of the crash of PanAm Flight 214.

Not to reopen old wounds, but it is a very informative write-up of the crash and the human tragedy, yet as a result of the lightning strike and the crash investigation something good came of it.

The Elkton crash had a practical impact on aviation. After a two-year investigation, the Civil Aeronautics Board determined the cause to be "lightning-induced ignition of the fuel/air mixture in the No. 1 reserve fuel tank with resultant explosive disintegration of the left outer wing and loss of control."

The board recommended modifications to aircraft design: mixing inert gases with fuel or adding circulation to reduce volatility, and adding discharge wicks — lightning rods — to mitigate the effect of strikes.

All of those are components on modern aircraft. I have been hit with lightning a number of times, sometimes quite loud, but never have had a problem, and upon landing we write it up in the logbook and the mechanic examines the fuselage to determine where the hit occurred, and usually is able to find the small black smudge where the strike occurred.

This ABC story has an interesting video of an Emirates heavy jet getting hit by lightning on approach to Heathrow, but does a decent job explaining why it's generally not a big deal nowadays, and why we haven't lost a plane in the States to lightning strikes over the last 50 years.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Daddy-- thanks for that aviation info.

PS: what is your personal opinion of TWA 800?

Danube on iPad

"The Obamacare bad news is literally never ending."

Let it roll...

MarkO

Just thinking about it, the mandate (or tax as the famous conservative vituperative jurist said) is not much of a mandate.

The evil here is that Obamacare (or the "N" word) severely and dangerously restricts the nature of insurance available and, worse still, access to healthcare.

It would be one thing to refuse to buy government insurance and buy something on the open market, but there is no open market. If that does not constitute taking over healthcare, what would?

MarkO

One does not need a mandate if there is no other insurance. Going without will always be an option. In this case, the choice of the economic man.

daddy

When I see Brazil nuts, I think racist.

When I see Brazil nuts, I think ObamaCare toes.

MarkO

daddy,

I feared no one would get it. I underestimated my Carolina foe.

Excellent choice of synonym. Use it liberally.

narciso,

these 'sultans of smart' somehow missed the point;

http://thefederalist.com/2013/12/09/real-wonk-gap/

Captain Hate

Dean Smith would be so disappointed if he had contact with reality.

Porchlight

I thought that might be what you were hinting at, MarkO.

jimmyk

Thanks, daddy. It is remarkable how rare crashes are today compared to those days, even though there are so many more flights. This is a list from wiki for 1963, only of those that had 50 or more deaths:

Jun 03 Northwest Orient Airlines 293
July 27 United Arab Airlines 869
Sep 04 Swissair Flight 306
Nov 29 Trans-Canada Air Lines 831
Dec 08 Pan Am Flight 214

MaryD

May I give a plug for my favorite source of nuts? It's the Superior Nut Company of Cambridge, Mass. They have a huge assortment of nuts and seeds, and I have enjoyed their Marcona almonds, pistachios, and mixed nuts. The nuts are impeccably fresh, high quality, and I think their prices are pretty good. You can save by buying from their bulk selections. LUN for the website.

Jane

Debuts tonight on FBN at 9:00pm

Opposite Megyn Kelly? That's just dumb. She is by far the best on Fox by a lot.

daddy

Excellent choice of synonym. Use it liberally.

MarkO,

I think we got permission to do so from the head ObamaCarer in Charge.

AliceH

--It would be one thing to refuse to buy government insurance and buy something on the open market, but there is no open market. --

There is a sort of "build your own health insurance" option, though. Starts with "self-pay" out of pocket for routine things, a prescription-drug-card for medicines, medical tourism for bigger, scheduleable things, and buying a cancer/illness insurance product that pays you cash for unexpected/big/urgent things -- always with the no-penalty option to just sign up for "insurance" on the "marketplace" for the next calendar year.

narciso,

Kennedy, what is this 1993, when MTV still sort of played music,

MarkO

AliceH,

Dare I say that market is, well, black?

Jack is Back!

78F at 4:30pm, up to 82 today. SW wind, maybe rain tomorrow afternoon.

Come on down!

George

How does a food that is 80% fat make you leaner?

It is because eating fat does not make you fat. This is a nutritional myth that is just starting to become well known.

Eating fat not only does not make you fat; it makes you feel full. Consequently, it has a double benefit when attempting to lose weight.

Preferably, you want to get the nuts with the lowest amount of carbohydrates like almonds.

maryrose

Jane:
love skiing out west. We went to Park City Utah for our honeymoon-no snow in Colorado in March that year. Have been to Alta and Vail in Colorado Loved them both. So much easier than skiing at Bromley or Sugarbush Vt.
I am truly saddened and confused by the Browns's loss yesterday. Brady's team will always get the calls. JIB is right about that. Oh well... there is always next year...

sbw

[Munching unsalted almonds for my mid-afternoon snack as I scroll through the thread.]

maryrose

I also liked Winter Park ,Colorado for family skiing fun.
Jane: Congrats on the news of Claire Joy!

MarkO

Everyone should visit Caro. I'll go first.

Ignatz

--Preferably, you want to get the nuts with the lowest amount of carbohydrates like almonds.

Posted by: George | December 09, 2013 at 04:34 PM --

Just what I was thinking.
Walmart has bags and bags of Almond Joys. I hope the almonds are unsalted for my health.

MarkO

Who would take the Joy out of Almond Joy?

Jane

Brady's team will always get the calls.

With all due respect that is just silly. We got screwed at least twice with bad calls this year.

Jane

I'm a fan of Wasabi almonds.

lyle

Come to Sun Valley, maryrose. Cruiser mountain extraordinaire.

Sue

Have I said lately how much I love Dick Cheney?

lyle

From PJ Media:

George W. and Laura Bush joined the Obamas on Air Force One en route to Johannesburg, South Africa, for a Nelson Mandela memorial service.

Hillary Clinton was also on board, with Bill and Chelsea coming to the service from a Clinton Global Initiative event in Rio.

The Obamas have stayed in their cabin for the flight, according to the White House pool report from the refueling stop in Senegal, while President Bush came to the press cabin twice for a total of about an hour and a half.

Once he was accompanied by Laura. Both times he was chatting off the record, saying hi to longtime reporters and greeting newer correspondents. Bush has been building cervical cancer screening clinics in Africa since his retirement from public office.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Attorney General Eric Holder and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett were also on the flight but avoided the press. The pool report noted that Holder wandered into the press cabin “before realizing the treacherous territory he’d ventured into and moving on.”

Shocked face. This admin is lousy with classless jerks. If the Bushes had not been on the plane, it would have been amusing if lightning HAD hit it. Sort of like cosmic justice.

Sue
