A U.S. official said Friday that investigators are also looking at the possibility that the jet’s disappearance was "an act of piracy."

Reposted for JIB from previous thread:

Now the Indonesian Air Force is saying that their radar on Aceh, north Sumatra did not pick up an indication of a plane crossing into the Straits from the east out of Malaysia. Its radar has a range of 445miles enough to reach Penang.

Therein lies the rub, unless they are using some new fangled stealth technology, there should be a radar signature, somewhere in that track

Big Data. Can't complain that it took a week to figure out the plane sent status info to the ether and satellite companies to find the messages -- it took that long for the FBI to figure out the Russians warned them about the Tsarniev clan long before the Boston Marathon. Why the delays? Don't blame the computers. Results operate at the speed of the bureaucrats asking questions, usually the wrong questions, and frequently questions about pron instead of whatever it is we pay them to do.

Miss Marple

Jack is Back,

Well, no, I really was at the food pantry, but I am glad someone asked the question about that flight simulator!

And, because the plane has now been missing for over a week while everyone has been searching for wreckage, there has been quite enough time to land it, unload it of dead passengers (via daddy's depressurized cabin theory) or massacre them on the ground.

There has also been enough time to re-paint the plane with another carrier's logo and fill it full of whatever nasty thing terrorists have in mind.

If you ask me, this is a carefully thought-out plan and everyone in the world is 3-4 steps behind.

Now where is the plane? They have had time to do all of the stuff I said above and fly to almost anywhere.

Jane

Is a "keep alive" ping, the same as a "I'm alive" ping?

The co-pilot apparently had a simulator in his house.

NK(withnewsoftware)

"the daunting vastness of the Indian Ocean,"

is the NYT now using the Grantland Rice style book? Jeez.

When we learn what really happened, each of us will probably facepalm and say "why didn't I think of that?"

Account Deleted

Miss Marple,

When they fire it bac kup the engines will report. Boeing may have other means of determining its whereabouts as well. If they do, I don't want to know about it.

The news on the engines could have been a warning to miscreants that the plane cannot be used as you suggest.

BR

Heh, Narciso, I see you've joined Mikey and the Clan of THWOT over at Ace's :)
See 68.

THought War on Terror

Miss Marple

Rick, Very good point. I forgot about those engine signals.

I don't think that whoever was piloting that plane knew, either. Maybe they thought if you didn't buy the technology it wasn't installed, not that Rolls wouldn't report it.

But that information suddenly appeared and was publicized pretty quickly, so I think you are right.

I personally think that to find the plane they are going to have to assume it landed somewhere and refueled.

BR

Like I said before, TK, Flight XXX got lust in transit and deviated by XXX Pirates!

Captain Hate

Tammy Bruce: Renee Elmers is John Boehner in a dress.

Old Lurker

Henry, if we were waiting for some government guy to ask the magic question I would agree with you 100%

But you KNOW that if you were an engineer at the other end of the system (RR or Boeing or Onstar or whomever), the first thing you'd do at work hearing of the mystery is to query your own system. The temptation to do that would be irresistible. If that indicated the plane flew on, how could that have remained secret? Somebody would have spilled the beans.

NK(withnewsoftware)

OL-- I agree with your 3:01. One caveat: what if this is a hostage situation. And the Malays/ChiComs/USA know the plane's whereabouts not just from Tracking Tech but because of randsom demands.

Miss Marple

CNN aviation expert background:

Miss Marple,

An intelligent hijacker might now be wondering whether RR or Boeing might also have included a long distance OFF switch without publicizing its location or capability.

henry

OL, I agree. However the proprietary nature* of that info might keep you quiet long enough for govt heavies to convince you to clam up.

*routine exposure of customer data leads to fewer customers. You notify your customer of what you found ( and possibly the relevant govt), but not the press. After Snowden, this is even more true for foreign customers.

Shocking that there's no mention of Jolly's anti-amnesty stance:

Eric in Boise

CH, I was so disgusted by the antics of Ellmers' predecessor that I sent her campaign a hundred bucks, and was quite pleased when she won.

I'm not feeling too pleased with myself right about now.

Captain Hate

Eh, you never know how they'll act once in office, Eric. Look at Kelly Ayotte who ran as Tea Party but has been anything but on a variety of issues; although she was very good on Ukraine on FNS. As bad as Ellmers was with Laura, her predecessor may have been the same.

Jack is Back

RB,

It has to be aloft with the landing gear up for the pinging to continue. ACARS stops the moment landing gear is engaged.

Also, if you are smart enough to plan a pirating of an airliner then most likely you will know how to disable the ACARS.

But it still never ceases to amaze me that we here at JOM started speculating about this days ago and finally someone in G2 woke up and started to imagine the unimaginable. I have a feeling they monitor this site because we aren't afraid or hampered to think outside the box.

NK(withnewsoftware)

Property Owners PAC luncheon earlier this afternoon. Several Repubs spoke including the State Chairman, (Dick Nixon's SIL Chris Cox is chairman -- he married Tricia back in the day.) Nice guy, but there is nothing sadder than NYS Repubs, as useful as teats on a bull. Just pathetic; thank god CaptH wasn't there to see it, I would never hear the end of it.... oh hi Captain.

Porchlight

If you ask me, this is a carefully thought-out plan and everyone in the world is 3-4 steps behind.

I'm with you, MM. We may never learn what happened, but I am personally certain that it is the work of very bad actors and that it was done with a definite very bad purpose in mind.

narciso

Yes, they go rotten rather quickly, what I was referring to earlier;

http://www.interpretermag.com/ukraine-liveblog-day-24-russia-mobilizes-near-the-border/

Porchlight

Ellmers barely squeaked by in 2010 to win that seat. IIRC it was one of the few close ones in recent memory that Dems weren't able to steal. I doubt we could have done much better and if she hadn't run as Tea Party, she probably wouldn't have been elected at all and we would have had a Dem in the seat.

Of course, given the size of the GOP House majority, maybe a Dem wouldn't have been so bad as at least they're a known quantity.

Eric in Boise

her predecessor may have been the same.

Well, her predecessor verbally (and physically, IIRC) abused a citizen who had the temerity to ask a challenging question, so at least she hasn't done that. Yet.

Sue

I don't understand republicans for amnesty. They aren't going to vote anything but dem.

Sue

Or republicans for any kind of immigration reform.

matt

You can bet some Progressive is going to want to ban something if something bad happens with that MAS aircraft.

NK(withnewsoftware)

repub amnesty immigration = big/medium business demanding open borders to suppress wages, and small business doesn't want immigration enforcement, because only hiring legal workers would kill their margins. Money talks to repubs as well as dems.

Threadkiller

Republicans for amnesty is the plan to woo LIV Asian professionals, Sue.

narciso

well, Sue, it's rare that immigration restrictionists are given a serious hearing,
to Jorge Ramos's credit, he gave Krikorian and a number of others, an opportunity to express their reservation, on his Sunday Morning show,

NK(withnewsoftware)

Krikorian is very thorough in his immigration thinking... he admits his recommendations are debatable, but they are definitely factually based. Now TK on the other hand....

Porchlight

I don't understand republicans for amnesty. They aren't going to vote anything but dem.

I've always given to understand that their donors are big business people who want a steady supply of cheap illegal labor, Sue.

However, if you make all those folks legal, don't you then have to pay them minimum wage? So that part I don't get. Without question the beneficiaries of amnesty are going to become Dem voters. Any pretense to the contrary is a total sham.

Threadkiller
Promoters of California’s top-two primary voting system claim it will produce more moderate winners when both candidates are from the same party because of the need to attract general election votes from the other party.

We will get a good opportunity to test that claim in November when it appears that Rep. Tom McClintock, easily one of the most conservative members of Congress, will face a fellow Republican for his fourth Congressional district seat.

http://ncroadkill.com/2014/03/14/mcclintock-race-could-be-a-good-test-of-top-two-voting/

Sue

Minimum wage, workers comp, etc. the cost to businesses would go up and democrats reap the benefit of new voters.

Jim Miller

Ellmers sounds like an interesting congresswoman -- and way better than her predecessor.

She won a very narrow race in 2010, 93,876-92,393. According to the Almanac, no one in the national party had paid much attention to her before she won the primary, and most thought she wasn't ready for prime time even after she did. (Re-districting has probably made the district safe for her.)

I don't watch cable TV, so I don't know anything about her appearance on the show, but I suspect that she is still not, by any means, a professional politician.

What she is, is the daughter of an auto worker, who worked her way through school, became a surgical nurse, married a doctor, and became involved in politics only after Obama was elected in 2008.

Given her profession, I wouldn't be surprised if she is a compassionate conservative.

Which is, on the whole, a good thing, in my opinion.

Jack is Back

Watching Cavuto and an expert was just on to give my theory more credence than I originally proposed:)

All of a sudden the idea of air piracy has become conventional wisdom.

NK(withnewsoftware)

"Business"-- large/medium employers (and some smaller firms with technical expertise) want increased LEGAL immigration to fill their needs with cheaper professional labor-- no $100,000 college debt to be paid by Indian expats, so they work much cheaper. Smaller employers want to waterdown e-verify and other hiring enforcement to keep access to illegal labor.

Bori

Sue,

Knowingly hiring illegals is, well, illegal. If caught the business owners would not only have stiff fines but jail time. Any savings from hiring illegals could go out the window fast.

21_cathy_f_in_tripep@d_prison_98

When you can be fined 100's of thousands of dollars for verifying your employees' immigration status, it's hard to imagine any way to water it down further...

NK(withnewsoftware)

yet, as we speak, there are several million illegals earning their livelihood as employees or independent contract laborers. Go figure.

Sue

And apparently voting in one county in Florida.

Jim Miller

In looking up Ellmers, I ran across this little bit in the Almanac, which I have to share:

"But in 2011, North Carolina was the site of the Democrats' worst redistricting devastation, the seeds of which were sown fifteen years prior. In 1996, Democrats in charge of the General Assembly exempted redistricting matters from the new gubernatorial veto powers, reasoning that they would always hold the legislature but voters might occasionally elect a Republican governor."

Then came the 2010 election. And so then-governor Bev Perdue, a Democrat, got to watch, helplessly, while Republicans redistricted the state.

The new Republican gerrymander is about as effective as the previous Democratic gerrymander.

Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc. and Credit Suisse Group AG were among 16 of the world’s biggest banks sued by the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. for allegedly manipulating the London interbank offered rate from 2007 to 2011.

The FDIC, acting as receiver for 38 failed banks including Washington Mutual Bank, IndyMac Bank FSB and Colonial Bank, claimed that institutions sitting on the U.S. dollar Libor panel “fraudulently and collusively suppressed” the U.S. Libor rate.

in re: immigration...the thing I don't get is that many illegals are employable because they are illegal. granting amnesty is just going to put them out of work and encourage a new wave of illegals (unless the economy gets worse).

rse

Apparently the Chamber nationally or a group of the large urban ones have done a very large ad buy to tout the Common Core. It is to be run over several months primarily on Fox. The idea is to supposedly pressure Conservatives to quit griping and get on board the inevitable express.

It was in Politico this am. Not only do they want a Fascist economy, the leaders seem to want vision compliance all the way around.

Even without all my research, if something is a good idea you don't have to get out in front and preempt debate like this.

Mathematical Fun
Your cell phone number shows your age:

[1] Take a look at your last digit of your cell phone number
[2] Use this figure and multiply by 2
[3] Then add 5
[4] And then multiply by 50
[5] And then add the number 1763
[6] The last step; with this number, subtract your birth year.
Now you see a three-digit number.
The first digit is the last digit of your phone number, the next digits are your actual age!

****

If you're on Flight XXX, add another step:
[7] imagine you're a little older and safely at home.

MM; I agree with your analysis wrt the missing plane Piracy or terrorism. Turning off devices used to communicate your whereabouts is a sure sign of something gone amiss. I pray for the families and hope one day we don't have to experience this kind of fear of the unknown.
As for Kerry: Wouldn't Saturday -before the referendum have been a better choice if a red line was going to be drawn? On Monday all that is left is the counted ballots tying Crimea to Russia.

Miss Marple

JiB, I have noticed through comments on another site that CNN has gone into the "plane has crashed in the Indian Ocean." They are insistent on it, more than seems normal.

About illegals:

If they are working for cash and can keep it all, they are not going to register and have to compete with those who get a paycheck with withholding. They are not stupid and they know that not only do they not have to pay taxes, they hold an advantage with cash transactions with many employers.

Heck, there are guys around here who are NOT Hispanic who offer to work for cash. Why would the Hispanics get suckered into that?

Personally, I think we should all ask that since the government cannot apparently control the border and all of these competing people who get paid in cash with no taxation are allowed in, then we should be allowed to compete the same way. All of us should be allowed to be paid in cash and not pay taxes. Look at what a boost to the economy THAT would be!

MM,

US intelligence that's who. While I was in my PJ's just being goofy with my theory, the bureaucrats were cutting red tape and doing their thing finally using their assets.

Now, Shemp is going to reveal the ground shaking information about ACARS which we have been discussing for days since the plane went missing. Geeez!

Sue

Glasater,

That's what I'm thinking. Shep said in 3 seconds they would be asleep.

21_cathy_f_in_tripep@d_prison_98
The FDIC ... claimed that institutions sitting on the U.S. dollar Libor panel “fraudulently and collusively suppressed” the U.S. Libor rate.
Follow the logic here: these banks, which are fundamentally in the business of loaning out money for interest, colluded to keep interest rates down.

What conspiracy theory are we going to hear next? Car makers colluding to keep the price of cars down? Computer makers colluding to lower the price of computers? Ice cream makers colluding to lower the price of ice cream?

They'll win, though. Only in the law can people be convicted of giving money away because that's exactly like stealing (except for a sign.)

Jack is Back

Climbing to 40K tells me that someone came into the cockpit and tried to take over. Pilots lose control, plane startts to climb, them regains control to the pirate and lowers altitude while it turns.

I worked on the Arun LNG project in Aceh. Very militant, separatist muzzies there. We lost two guys to execution - Aussie and Kiwi. Hacked to death. Not a nice place but the money was great.

NK(withnewsoftware)

LIBOR manipulation-- the rate would benefit/hurt deal participants depending on which side of the deal they were on.

Pretty sure this was all a terrorist needed to see to figure it out on his own.

Sue,

According to a Pilot forum it would take 30 seconds to a minute before everyone would lose consciousness.

There is actually a chart that was posted on one site that listed how long people it would take people to lose consciousness at different heights but I can't find it now.

Sue

So did Shep mean 30 but said 3? Typical.
