daddy

From the Horse's mouth: “There will be a response of some kind to the referendum itself. If there is no sign [from Russia] of any capacity to respond to this issue ... there will be a very serious series of steps on Monday.“we have contingencies – we are talking through various options that may or may not be available.”

“Our hope is not to create hysteria or excessive concern about that at this point in time. Our hope is to avoid that, but there's no telling that we can.”

narciso

the map at 19;07 on this link, is instructive,

also apparently Lukashenko, is not so keen on the annexation deal,

I see that just breaking is the news that Jon Corzine's son, a 31 year old Drug Counselor in California, has just died.

No word on cause of death, and obviously a tragedy for the family, but I do hope if the cause of death does have to do with drugs that it is announced and gives us pause about the wisdom of making gateway drugs like marijuana legal across the nation.

Ignatz

Dana,
It does your cause no good to ignore the fact that marijuana (and alcohol and perhaps tobacco) do serve as a type of relatively harmless introduction to drugs for many people.
You can argue that many or most people don't go on to more serious drugs that they become addicted to or OD on, or you can argue that even if they do, so long as they aren't hurting anyone else, why should the government have the power to stop them.
But when you tell people, almost all of whom known at least one person who started out dabbling in pot, and ended up hooked on something pretty bad or dead, that it does not provide a relatively innocuous entrance to drug use for some people that does go awry, you weaken your argument not strengthen it.

Janet - the districts lie fallow, while the Capitol gorges itself

Yeah, narciso...I'm not buying the "evil CIA vs the righteous Senate committee" storyline.
At least not yet.
I don't really have a dog in the hunt, but the story & the roll out of the story is sketchy.

Ignatz

Of course I forgot Dana prefers weak, unsupportable arguments.
Never mind.

Ignatz

Speaking of Dana,
Couldn't find the details, but apparently the poor little guy who had to work hard, old retail that Dana linked earlier from the Atlantic is, according to Instapundit, unable to find other employment because of a history of wacko racist rants and domestic violence charges.
Anyone got details?

Captain Hate

I don't know if anybody linked this already but I'm glad this guy is on our side:

Is Bingo at the Catholic Church a gateway to Lost Wages?

If you'd ever had to deal with a family member who's a compulsive gambler, you'd know the answer to that is "potentially", bonehead.

“I probably have supported George Bush more than I have Barack Obama,” Rahall said

As he pissed his pants from reading the demographics of the FL 13 election. Nick Rahall is walking dead. But its funny to watch him claim to be something other than a loyal Democrat.

GMax

Want a list of terrified Democrats in the House? I would start with the 18 Democrats who voted with Republicans to pass the Follow the Law bill.

The Federalist has a lot of great stuff.

Jane

Corzine's son was found in Mexico a few days ago and has a long history of addiction.

narciso

It resembles either the Sandy Burglar expedition, or Kirikaou, who got a two and a half year plea, for giving the names of his associates, 'burning them' in the parlance,
to the other side,

Bori

Iggy,

I wanted to add that one of the things that rub me the wrong way about the guy is that by his own admission, he was taking advantage of the flex 40 rules of his employer. Which may also explain why his employer gave him the boot.

Jane

Anyone understand this WH/CIA v the senate thing. People keep saying it started with Bush and the interrogation of terrorists. There is not a chance on the planet Obama would protect the CIA or anyone else from that, so what are they doing that has caused the CIA to commit treason on their behalf?

Bori

On topic, IMHO, Putin's show of strength is meant to keep the Ukrainian from interfering in the Crimea and nothing more than that.

On a lighter not maybe someone could post this picture, I think it is amazing.

It's not treason, it's retreival of stolen property, regarding the most closely held info on detainees and interrogators,

windansea

Flight XXX got lust in transit.

I could tell you a story of a PSA flight SFX to SAN back in the days when stewardesses were young and nubile, and the plane was empty except for me and a friend and 2 very cute "flight attendants"

Beasts of England

Thanks, centralcal - that's a very beautiful and rare RR. I'm surprised that Ralph Lauren doesn't own it - it's up his alley!

I just thought a car that looked that ominous should have an owner/driver with a name like Beasts of England! ha ha

That car looks like batman.

I'm listening...

Ranger

Last I heard about the CIA/Senate fandango was that things hit the fan when the CIA requested the DoJ pursue charges against the Senate staffers for stealing classified information.

Bori

Jane,

I see 3 main possibilities;

a> this is a whole lot of baloney, designed to rehash the Bush era (torture, war, renditions, etc.) to appeal to their base.

b> the information implicates high Democratic officials as knowing about the programs and the WH wants that kept secret.

c> CIA has the goods on Obama and that is why the WH is helping the CIA obstruct Congress.

Remember for instance, that Pelosi claims that she did not know anything about those activities by the CIA, so the WH has an incentive to protect an ally.

Sue

Daddy,

Have you ever seen a UFO?

Sue

The CIA has Obama's birth certificate?

narciso

Yes, that point is brought up in Rizzo's memoir, which is a good primer to these matters, which references lead attorney Eattinger, was just a junior official.

"Europe is through; they won't be bothering Russia for a century, unless it is under a Crescent flag"

Putin has to convince Russian women that having kids has a definite upside or Russia will be in the same demographic pit as the EUnuchs. The Russians have recovered slightly wrt TFR but not enough to justify geographic expansion.

Would the Ukrainians actually be worse off in the Greater Eurasian Co-Prosperity Sphere?

It's a curious situation with the EUnuchs and the US using regulation and the SkyDragon battle to try and drive prices to the point where deflation appears to stop. It doesn't seem to be working any better than it did when FDR assembled his fabled brain trust and extended and enhanced the Depression. Progs really are Bourbons, quite capable of forgetting and learning nothing regardless of reality staring them in the face and showing very sharp teeth.

narciso

Looks like the autopilot in Airplane.

Bori

RB,

At least some Bourbons paid with their head for their obtuseness. Nowadays, they just get richer.

Janet

A very funny Tim Blair post - http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/timblair/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/marchy_march_marchness/#153891

a bit - "Leftists love forming committees almost as much as they love spending your money. Even the least consequential leftist movement inevitably produces a hellspawn of useless committees devoted to various pointless missions."...

and -

"This weekend’s March in March demonstrations, being held now because there isn’t a month called Stupid Whiny Bitching, have also generated the usual number of committees and such."

Jim Miller

Jane - I thought that the latest column by Debra Saunders was pretty good on the background of the facility.

Then some Democratic staffers, and probably a senator or two, concocted a report that made people in the CIA look bad -- and the two have been quarreling ever since.

And I think the reason that the Obama people let the dispute grow is that none of the inner circle is interested in what the CIA is doing -- unless they can see some political gains from it.

(Caveats: I haven't followed this closely, and have no claims to expertise in the area.)

Captain Hate

Daddy,

Have you ever seen a UFO?

I've been waiting for these threads to go full Roswell.

Jane on Ipad

Jim,

What I don't get is why Obama is protecting Bush, and the CIA. They must be willing to drop a dime on Obama and he can't purge everyone.

Captain Hate

Some issues, he's very firm on however;

I don't think it's a stretch, or a lurch, to predict a Levin rant on that.

Sue

Capt'n,

I got on a weird show. Aliens the Unsealed Files. It makes TK's and TBT's conspiracies seem plausible by comparison.

narciso

Well there seems to a certain pattern, with certain officials who were choice sources for Mayer, Priest, Rosenberg, Bravin, who followed
the Levick line as Deborah Burlingame had discovered, Grenier, Dannenberg, McCarthy, et al, and others like Rizzo, Rodriguez,

Sue

The actual name is Unsealed Alien Files.

Bori

Jane,

Maybe, he's not. Its just not there. But, just bringing it up, they feel will help them politically

Captain Hate

Putin has to convince Russian women that having kids has a definite upside or Russia will be in the same demographic pit as the EUnuchs. The Russians have recovered slightly wrt TFR but not enough to justify geographic expansion.

Talking with Rooskis in the US is quite an eye opener for just how depressing things were over there; as in no desire to return ever. Maybe things are better now but that's starting out in a very deep hole.

Ignatz

That Guardian link on China should scare people.
If they're talking like that in public there is stuff going on considerably worse behind the scenes and they're intention of compensating with public spending ala Japan is ominous.
The world will believe in the Chinese miracle just as it has every other miracle right up until it fails.
As much as it might please some to see the commies inevitably crash and burn it will weaken further an already bad world economy and of course will almost certainly spell out to the world's idiots that capitalism is fatally flawed, even when it's communists who fail.

mad jack

Rick: the only problem I have with your analysis is the implication that the progs are pushing regulation nation to fight deflation. Progs regulate because it's like breathing; if they don't do it they die.

Captain Hate

You were *on* the show, Sue?

Sue

I think I know where the plane went. Aliens took it.

Ignatz

Guest of honor, no doubt.

Eric in Boise

Close, Ig. That was actually an outfit called Western Airlines.

The only way to fly

I grew up in L.A. and remember these from the late 60s.

Get off my lawn.

Jim Miller

Jane - What I meant to say is that I don't think Obama and his inner circle have paid very much attention to the dispute. He's not exactly a "hands-on" manager, after all.

If that seems implausible, remember this: Both he and Sebelius claim he didn't know the ObamaCare website was going to have a terrible debut. And I am inclined to believe him on that.

And there are many, many precedents for top people ignoring problems (and opportunities) in organizations. Especially organizations as big as the federal government.

And even more especially if those top people have no skill, or experience, at managing big organizations.

(Whether Sebelius knew more about the web site problems than she says she knew is harder for me to tell. But I am inclined to think that she was, at least partly, surprised, too.)

Sue

Please, I'm deep in conspiracies and you want to correct my grammar?

Sue

What if daddy has seen a UFO? The number of pilots who have us larger than we might imagine. How much larger? I guess that number is top secret too. They didn't tell me.

Captain Hate

No no; I wasn't correcting your grammar, which looks fine to me. I just misinterpreted what you were saying.

jimmyk

Talking with Rooskis in the US is quite an eye opener for just how depressing things were over there; as in no desire to return ever.

I've noticed that too, CH. Not a bit of sentimentality for the homeland. They also, if I may say, can have a bit of an edge to their personalities (not all, but most). I suppose I would too if I'd been through what they had.

Sue

Oh. Sorry. I meant I was flipping through channels and stopped on that show. It was so amazingly awful I watched 2 hours of it.

Jane on Ipad

Yet Jim, they have refused to turn over 9000 pages to Feinstein. I'm going to read Saunders now.

Big news on the plane on Megyns show. Communications shut down on purpose and diverted.

So where are the passengers?

Threadkiller

You sure Ig didn't post a PSA plane?

boatbuilder

The Manet interview piece that CH linked up above is food for the soul. Do read it. Thanks CH.

Sue

One of the passengers is from the Dallas area.

boatbuilder

Mamet, damnit!

Jane on Ipad

Plane flew for 5 more hours after the transponder turned off.

Jim Miller

Speaking of hands-on managers, there's an LBJ story that I have always liked. (Can't recall where I saw it.)

He would, from time to time, place calls to mid-level bureaucrats randomly picked, and ask them what they were doing to serve the country, right then.

It is a lousy way to gather information, obviously -- but I can't say I can think of a better one, given the constraints.

narciso

Well David is much an artist, he wouldn't mind the malapropism, as much as Leonard in his own way,

Threadkiller

I see Ig's comment now, Eric.

Sorry.

Sue

Someone just said this is like a Tom Clancy novel. It really does seem unbelievable in this day and age that a large plane just disappears.

Jack is Back!

Gos, all of a sudden my kookie idaa is becoming the main lede with the MSM:) I was first, remember that!

narciso

Good summary, Jim Miller,

Jane on Ipad

Transponder turned off at one time, other communication turned off 20 minutes later.

Sue

So if their cell phones were on they can't triangulate because there aren't towers? I guess I don't understand the technology. My iPhone knows where I am all the time. I thought that was satellite generated.

Jim Miller

I see that Kerry says he is approaching the Keystone XL decision with a "totally blank slate".

He shouldn't tempt us with straight lines like that.

narciso

Come on now after everything we've heard about the NSA, SORM, GHCQ, whatever the Chinese equivalent is, that's defies credibility,

narciso

Now the agencies might not want to admit that capability, that's a different issue,

Miss Marple

A lot of old guys were talking at the auction tonight about the plane. One is retired from an airline and he doesn't believe it crashed, but was diverted.

He also doesn't believe the official story of TWA 800 (center fuel tank).

Ignatz

OMG, eric. Thank you for correcting me. How could I not remember the precursor to "the only way to fly" [western Airlines....]?
