If you are dying to dole out birthday wishes, today is the resident lesbian's birthday. Except she doesn't read here, so don't kill yourself.

It's also the anniversary of our partnership (I think 8 years). Best thing I ever did.

It's also the 40th birthday of the Rubick's cube which means Amy is older than that little box.

Excellent, jimmyk.

Let's hear some of the private conversations of leftists.

Speaking of the resident Lesbian, apologies if narciso has already linked this from his fishwrap but its big news all over Florida today:

Republican Rep. Charles Van Zandt: Common Core will make all your children homosexuals

So it begins and so it ends.

Jane

Trust me JIB, the resident lesbian would not approve.

No, jib, but the psychosocial is definitely the focus. http://www.invisibleserfscollar.com/shaping-a-mind-is-more-important-than-stuffing-it-grasping-the-psychosocial-key-to-fundamental-transformations/

digital signal processing and money and banking ...

Well, Rich, if you want to make money to bannk in the field of digital signal processiing look to the advent of GSM-R technology here in America. [Global System for Mobile Communications - Railroad] It is the comms component of a Rail Traffic Management System like ERTMS in europe and integrates with Rail Traffic Control Systems.

There should be some pretty good entry positions with the rolling stock vendors, infrastructure operators and component providers.

why not? when I first heard it that was the first guess I had. the vets are just numbers in a spreadsheet to the VA bureaucracy.

You answered your own question.

Man Tran on iPhone

JiB and Rich,

I've poked around a bit with GSM-R and I don't think it will sustain combustion. EUtards, yes, but not here afaik. A pal in Leesburg ran the Comms committee for a couple decades and the RR guys never saluted it. The Chinese are paying lip service, but I haven't seen any build out. (Plus that would be all Huawei.)

For my own selfish needs, I would love to have it. Wayside comms is a real hash up when you need it along 150k miles of RoW. BNSF's exploitation of MeteorCom was a poor start with about the BW of a string and two cans.

She wrote Strange Justice? I actually own that POS book. My lefty brother gave it to me and it sits on a bottom shelf behind a table where you can't see it. Been meaning to get rid of it for years, but when you can't see something, you forget about it. Plus I have a thing about getting rid of books that were given to me by family members, even if I don't like or want the books.

Rich,

Yeah NoVa, but he's retired now. There's a major brain drain in the RR community -- especially on the research side. Among other efforts, I'm working at a loss to mentor the kids at UIUC, because they have shown a serious leap beyond the usual grad student effort to reinvent Nadal's Limit or some other pretend effort.

narciso

Yes, Porch, along with Jane Mayer, before she slimed the Koch brothers, and was the Gitmo detainee devils advocate, she trawled this muck.

Yuck, narciso.

I used to get her mixed up with Leslie Abramson.

Needless to say, her account was incomplete,

Thank you for those links, jimmyk. I was just thinking I would like to revisit the Anita Hill case and refresh my memory.

Joe Biden also had a despicable role in that travesty.

I really hate these people.

Things seem to be spiraling downhill rather rapidly. How many people reading this blog today will be punished somehow in the future (fired, audited, worse) for their political views?

Porchlight

"spiraling downhill"

Apologies to Taranto for the mixed metaphor...

More from the "smartest guy in the room," again:

“I hate to be blunt about it, but that’s the play. And, by the way, when I say a party has been captured, it’s because I actually want an effective, serious, patriotic, capable, sober-minded Republican Party. That’s part of why we got a Intercontinental Railroad system.”

The defense will be that there are trains to Canada, or something.

Of course, not when Lincoln was president, which was the context of his statement.

Is every single person in Rhode Island a blithering nincompoop?

Instead, students who would normally be recognized at the annual spring tradition will be honored during team-based recognition ceremonies and graduation.

The notice was sent to parents over the weekend in an e-mail signed by School Principal Alexis Meyer and Assistant Principal Dan Seger.

These folks should be shown the door on a rail with tar and feathers the announced price of any resistance...

I think he was referring to our Intercontinental Ballistic Trains.

The level of dumb in this society is sickening. Went to get a cup of coffee this morning and I swear there wasn't an everyday ordinary person in the place. Metrosexuals, pansexuals, housewives thinking they're 21 years old. Young girls wearing the most revealing clothing imaginable. Morbidly obese people. It is as if their body and brain chemistries have gone haywire.

Matt "The level of dumb in this society is sickening"

Did you see the story yesterday about MacDonalds testing kiosks for taking orders and credit cards?

Ooops...there goes another slice of jobs.

narciso

'Mr. President, I gather all that, but you know what also sounds like the Intercontinental Railroad, the Keystone pipeline, which you have refused to approve, btw, I imagine the Railroadhad a sizable carbon footprint, since it was run with coal,'

Btw, Mr. President, I agree that Benghazi was just a 'bump in the road' although why are we preparing to evacuate the American Embassy there,

Porchlight

My understanding was that a job was not lost, but there was a warning of some sort. I could have misinterpreted, though.

Porchlight

Did you see the story yesterday about MacDonalds testing kiosks for taking orders and credit cards?

It really makes complete sense. You can already order online from tons of restaurants - why not make it possible in the restaurant itself, too?

Stupid minimum wage hikers will never figure out the pattern here.

Old Lurker

I know, Porch. And once you are used to them, who would not rather get a boarding pass from a kiosk than some surly non English speaking person at the airport? If you need cash, would you go to a free ATM or stand in line at the bank? Would you rather use the self checkout at Home Depot or the semi-live person?

Next up, one only has to watch a few "How its Made" shows on the History Channel to wonder why humans flip the burgers in the first case at McD's.

And on and on.

Old Lurker

In the 30's and 40's my Grandfather owned coal mines in WV. Lot's of people worked there. In the 60's my Father was the tax lawyer for the guy who automated WV mines and put most of the old miners into retirement.

John L Lewis never made the connection.

Porchlight

I kind of like the human interaction at Home Depot and the grocery stores, but otherwise I'm with you, OL.

Eric in Boise, I hope we can turn it around so that your retirement project abroad isn't necessary. Feeling squaredancey today though.
