What were the terms of the non disclosure agreements?

Why did the White House think that his return would be greeted like the 1981 hostages?

Why were they invested in the optics looking good as opposed to just doing the right thing?

And there's more:

Unpossible, jimmyk. BB could not possibly have collaborated. Since The Won came into office, we don't have any enemies. Not like when that drooling moron, Booosh, was around.

I got a little bit more from a guy who was in Warnal Province after Bergdahl became a POW. He said they could monitor the low frequency crappy radios the Taliban were using and there was plenty of transmissions which referred to the American giving them active advice. He was never named so we cant be sure it was Bergdahl, but I asked what he believed and he said they was pretty much what he thought at the time.

He may have been actively working against American forces.

I agree with those who say the notification requirement is unconstitutional. In any case, Obama issued a signing statement to that effect (I know, I know-- the hypocrisy is breathtaking).

I'm still on catch-up on the other thread, but if you guys have the time and interest, here is a quite long but rather thorough run down of Begich and the 3 guys running against him. How Sarah Palin could decide Alaska's race for Senate

Since I mentioned Sarah Palin earlier in regards to Haley Barbour and the Mississippi Senate Campaign, this story caught my eye because the author thinks that an endorsement of Joe Miller by Sarah Palin would possibly win him the Republican primary and hand a victory in the General Election to Begich. I agree with the premise that Begich will beat Joe Miller (he is viewed as seriously damaged goods up here) but I don't see a Palin endorsement of Miller as strong enough to promote Miller over his Repub opponents.

If Sarah Palin is smart, and I certainly think she is, she will essentially keep mum in this State until after the Primary.

Anyhow, a decent background on how Begich got to where he is.

Perhaps the lawless ways of this administration are finally catching up with them a little here; If the President and the rest of the Executive Branch aren't bound by the law, why should I be? I think that nondisclosure agreement is a sham; I'll call Howie Carr and talk to him anyway.. And perhaps the guy who spoke with Jake Tapper did similarly? And perhaps others will, as well?

Obama may have wanted Bergdahl to distract from the VA scandal, but he may well end up looking like he burned down an apartment building filled with people to cover up the murder of one of them - while remaining in the building himself.

Lt Andrews was posthumously given a silver star for his bravery. At the time of his death his wife Julie, 30, had already given birth to their son, six. Their daughter was born three-and-a-half months later and is now four.

Speaking to MailOnline from his home in Cameron, Texas, Mr Andrews said: ‘When my son was killed there was no mention of searching for this guy (Bergdahl) but once all this has come out we got several emails and calls from soldiers who were with him in Afghanistan.

‘They say their mission was to search for Bergdahl. He (Lt Andrews) was killed in the search. We have no documentation of that.

'The soldiers said they had to sign a letter saying that they wouldn't discuss this... We cannot tell you how devastated we are that the government would do this. They lied to us'

‘The soldiers said they had to sign a letter saying that they would not discuss this. I have no way of proving that apart from what they said. We cannot tell you how devastated we are that the government would do this.
‘It’s a big cover-up like Benghazi, just like everything Obama has done. We want the truth to come out.’

FWIW,

Bergdahl was assigned to a Unit out of the Base here in Anchorage, Fort Richardson.

Initially, (when this broke) there was a story or 2 saying that a soldier assigned to a Unit stationed at Fort Rich was released in Afghanistan.

Now as I scour the ADN I cannot find any local stories about it at all, just minimal reposts of various AP or NYTimes stories with slight headline changes.

These homespun odes to "The Law" are just silly. The Law is what those in power say it is.

When was the last time a Dem-appointed Supreme Court justice ruled against his or her political preference in favor of the Constitution? How about federal judges? In six years, has a single Congressional Democrat strayed from the plantation? Have any of them voted against an important plank of the progressive project, excepting those whose own hides were on the electoral line and were thus given a stragic exemption?

The days of patriotic Americans from both parties, arguing for The Law in the face of their own political objectives, are over. They're not coming back. Now it's just a matter of who wins elections.

If Obama were truly cunning, we'd be truly hosed.

Here's a local story by the biggest of the Local TV Stations in Anchorage that is now up:

Family of Fallen JBER Soldier Seek Answers Following Release of Bergdahl

(JBER stands for our Joint Airforce/Army Base Elmendorf/Richardson.)

Amid the questions, the family of a soldier from the same battalion Bergdahl served with, who was subsequently killed in action, hopes only a thorough investigation of those circumstances will be conducted.

Cheryl Brandes is the mother of Pfc. Matthew M. Martinek, 20, of DeKalb, Ill. Martinek was stationed at Fort Richardson with 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25st Infantry Division and 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment. She believes Martinek was killed in action while he and soldiers like him searched for Bergdahl. Like Martinek, Bergdahl was assigned to the 501st.

I'm not noticing Yellow Ribbons.

matt

Bergdahl was a PFC, I believe, when he went for his walk.He would have known squat and the Haqqanis would have known this. But he was a trophy trout so they milked it for all they could.

We fulfilled our no man left behind obligation, but that doesn't mean that Bergdahl was a hero or shouldn't face military justice.

The Gitmo 5 will simply torment the non-Pashtun Afghans now although they may have a hardon for the USA.

It is interesting to note that we had a lot of SF's and contractors on the wrong side of the border and plenty of incidents where Americans or ISAF's could have been captured and none were. Except for Bergdahl.

Wow! Finally got the time to read the entirety of the story from Steve Hayes at the Weekly Standard:

Here's the last 2 paragraphs from page 3:

"The amount of pain he's caused," says one of Bergdahl's platoon mates, his voice trailing off. After a long pause, he resumes. "The time he was DUSTWUN (duty status: whereabouts unknown) was the most miserable time of my life. It was absolute hell. A bunch of us had a pact if we found him. We'd each get him in a room for five minutes and short of killing him we could do what we want."

ust when I think that Obama has committed the most egregious offense in his quest to fundamentally transform the country that I love, he comes up with some new assault on our Constitution, our security, and in fact, our very sense of right and wrong. He releases five of the most vicious, high value terrorist prisoners in exchange for a man who defamed our Country, abandoned his fellow soldiers in the field, and aided and abetted the enemy in time of war.

This outrage came right on the heels of Obama's speech to the graduates of West Point in which he stated, "...we still need to ask tough questions about whether our actions are proportional and effective and just." Granted he was not addressing the upcoming exchange of prisoners, but Obama's sense of what is proportional, effective and just as demonstrated by this event is astonishingly off-kilter by any measure.

In one sense, this incident may be useful. It gives us a vivid picture of what lengths Obama will go to achieve a "photo op" when his numbers are tanking. It has brought to the forefront information about just who Pfc. (Sgt.) Bergdahl really is, his views about his fellow soldiers, his condemnation of America. We are now aware that his Pashto-speaking, scraggly-bearded father has been actively seeking to free ALL terrorist prisoners from Gitmo, and that he believes that America should suffer retribution for our actions in the war on terror. Most of all, we are learning from the soldiers who were deployed with Bergdahl of the intense search that was conducted for this deserter, and the number of soldiers who lost their lives or were injured in their efforts to save his sorry a$$. (Typhus won't let me use the word I would prefer to use.)

Rather than divert the attention away from the scandal surrounding the horrific deficiencies of the VA system, this incident has placed greater emphasis on it. For it shows in a way that should be obvious to all the disingenuous attitude and utter contempt that Obama has for the members of our armed forces. So, maybe some good will come of this. I have to hope so.

As far as Pfc. (Sgt.) Bergdahl is concerned, it would probably be too much to expect that he will be given a court martial and the dishonorable discharge that he deserves. I sincerely hope that there are no welcoming parades and crocodile tears upon his return. In fact, I hope we never hear from him and his ridiculous family again. At the very least, he owes us that.

Danube on iPad

Fox News:

"The Pentagon said Monday it is reviewing claims that U.S. soldiers were killed in the course of the years-long search for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was released over the weekend by his Taliban captors.

"The sense of celebration surrounding the announcement Saturday of Bergdahl's release quickly has given way to controversy -- including questions surrounding his initial disappearance from his eastern Afghanistan post five years ago and the lengths to which U.S. forces went to find him.

"The names and faces of six soldiers, who died allegedly during the search for Bergdahl, began to emerge within hours of the soldier's release.

"Asked about the claims, Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said it's "impossible" to confirm right now whether anybody's death was directly linked to the hunt for Bergdahl.

"But the Pentagon will look further into the circumstances of the deaths being associated with the search, he said."

Back from the piano recital. Grandaughter played a blues number called "Kansas City, 1928" and also a favorite of mine, Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King."

Also was amused by a boy with a very Scandinavian name playing "Guitars of Seville" while an Indian sister and brother played "Tijuana Taxi" and "New York, New York." The boy played the latter and he was almost as good as my granddaughter, who is several years older.

It was a very interesting recital and made me feel like the country is not without hope.

Soylent Red

I was racking my brain the other day to bring up what struck me as odd about this whole thing as it developed. Today it dawned on me, reinforced by a piece Brad Thor wrote over at the Blaze.

I work in an area where I have television news channels in every direction I look, all day long. What I noticed today is:

1. They all say Bergdahl was being held by the Taliban. He wasn't.

2. Many say he was held in Afghanistan. He wasn't.

I have a hard time believing that so many people can be so obtuse, but the effect of the collective journalistic obtuseness is that no one is asking why Pakistani Haqqanis negotiated for Afghan Taliban. The two groups are tangentially affiliated at best.

Particularly when we have Hajji Mali Khan, one of the OG Haqqani patriarchs, in Gitmo, who they could have negotiated for.

Also, the timing of this station chief outing is suspect as well, vis Bergdahl. And yet that little event was quickly forgotten in the flurry of stuttering clusterfuckery that ensued last Thursday and Friday.

Miss Marple

Dark musings of my conspiratorial mind:

1. What if this is a plot to release all of the terrorists? The Benghazi fake kidnapping scenario flopped, so they went to plan B.

2. Is it possible that sleeper agents were put into the military right after Obama's election? Could this be coordinated?

3. Why was the deal turned down while Panetta was SecDef, but then accepted later? Is it because Hagel was chosen because he is a dim bulb?

4. How long has the father been a convert? Isn't anyone in Homeland Security interested in whether he has actually been in contact with the Taliban?

4. Why did the father say the people working with the son were selected by them? Did they get to select Muslim counselors and doctors? I want an explanation of this.

5. I believe the press appearance in the Rose Garden was a signal to the Taliban that all had been done according to their wishes. Why else would the father speak in Pashtun?

daddy

Was the Afgan CIA Chief outed deliberately because he didn't agree with this?

Even more amazing, how are 6,000 reporters able to keep the lid on the name of the CIA Station Chief? Could we possibly imagine the Press doing that during a Republican Administration?

It's almost like they're trying to minimize the damage to the Administration or something.

Eric in Boise2

I sincerely hope that there are no welcoming parades and crocodile tears upon his return.

I know they were planning one in Hailey, but I'm not sure of the timeframe. What's interesting is that I heard a snippet on Fox News (radio version) this evening saying that the mayor of Hailey is urging people not to "rush to judgement" until "all the facts are known", or something along those lines.

Oh and one more itty bitty thing: apparently Hailey has also been deluged with calls referring to BB as a "deserter" and "traitor".

Sounds like they might need to scale back the parade a bit.

One of the videos favorited by Bob Bergdahl was none other than a video of former terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki, explaining why the world hates America. I think we are all familiar with his Jihadi work, unfortunately.

In the story I linked about the Alaskan Weatherman converted to Islamic Terrorism we get this:

In December, only three months after the attacks, Rockwood took the shehada, the Muslim affirmation of faith, and not long after began attending the radical Dar al-Arqam mosque in Falls Church, Va...Here, Rockwood was exposed to the teachings of Anwar Awlaki, a Yemeni American engineer whose entreaties to U.S. Muslims to engage in holy war made him one of the most influential voices of violent, radical Islam in the West
