Don't count on it.

cheerleader

I read that Jason Miller, hired by Manafort, is the current head of Trump's communications team, late of the Cruz campaign.

Porchlight

I wish I'd seen this live last night:

Miss Marple 2

Here's a disgruntled GOP delegate writing for The Hill:

1. Of course goes to calling Trump supporters brownshirts.

2. Former chief of staff to professional conservative grifter Alan Keyes.

henry

Strassel had some words on Cruz this morning... I did not read them.

Theo

I think that the plagiarism story is on the verge of being forgotten, as it should be.

As I wrote yesterday, it was a dumb attack line for the Dems. If calling Trump a racist and a con man and a misogynist and unfit for the office didn't work, why would arguing that his wife's speechwriter bungled a cut and paste operation win any votes?

Miss Marple 2

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/438086/ted-cruz-republican-convention-speech-high-stakes-2020?utm_source=NR&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=July19Johnson

Reading this, NRO seems to think Cruz will not endorse and attempt a Reagan 1976 position.

I am reminded of the line in Patton: "Rommel, you crazy bastard! I read your book!"

I am thinking that it will be interesting to see who follows Cruz on the speaking schedule. I am going to go find the schedule right now.

Porchlight

LOL, Dave (in MA)!

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

I no longer visit NRO or the Federalist except to check on the progress of their cases of TDS.
The prognosis is not good.

Miss Marple 2

Ted Cruz will be followed by Eric Trump, Newt Gingrich, and Mike Pence.

Miss Marple 2

Ignatz,

Me either. Article showed up on my Twitter feed, so thought I should check since they probably have a pipeline to Cruz.

Marlene

Porch@12:32...I channel surfed last night and I actually saw that sign shown on CNN. I think Jake Tapper and Dana Bash were discussing the speech of the RNC co-chair,Sharon Day.
She "went there" and said Bill Clinton sexually abused women. Dana Bash looked like she was going cry. She said to Tapper," I don't think that has ever been proved." What??!!
Watching these people in the media has been very entertaining.

Momto2

That's a good line-up MM!

Porchlight

Someone placed a tiny border wall around Donald Trump's star on Hollywood Boulevard

The comments on Reddit/The_Donald are hilarious.

"That star has been vandalized to hell. If the vandalism stops after the wall was put up, it will be a perfect analogy."

"It looks so safe and secure."

"He didn't even have to pay for the wall. Free wall."

"Put a glorious American flag in the middle. Distribute little ISIS and Mexican flags outside the walls."

"Do you see any illegals inside it?
I rest my case."

"People are now walking around his star. But walls dont work."

"Under budget, ahead of schedule"

"lol a Mexican paid for the wall"

"I'm willing to bet this is some lib artist making a 'point', but all I can think is "Man, some mounted turrets with overlapping fields of fire would look GOOD on that"

Porchlight

MM,

Thank you for watching CNN so I don't have to. :)

Never proved? OMG.

RattlerGator

Hmmmmm:

http://wfla.com/2016/07/20/trump-staff-writer-takes-responsibility-for-using-michelle-obamas-words-in-melanias-speech/

"I apologize for the confusion and hysteria my mistake has caused.”

This is a perfect play by the Trump campaign. It's a subtle acknowledgment of the words being placed in there knowingly and, *get this* friends, they were included because Melania LIKES Michelle.

Ohhhhhhhh, what a jab!

How are they going to attack Melania now?

How are they going to attack Donald for not firing this chick?

Beautiful job.

Captain Hate

She "went there" and said Bill Clinton sexually abused women. Dana Bash looked like she was going cry. She said to Tapper," I don't think that has ever been proved." What??!!

If nothing else, Trump has added a spine to Top Men (generic). Can anybody imagine Mutt Rombley approvingly anything close to this, which has been begging to be addressed? When you are on the right side of an issue and have the facts on your side, it is sheer gutlessness and a political felony not to bring them up.

Kaiser Derden

if you are stupid enough to believe that Michelle Obama was the first to utter "your word is your bond" then you are beyond help ... obviously Tom is ...

Porchlight

RG, more fodder for your thesis.

Melania Trump's speechwriter has admitted that some of Michelle Obama's words ended up in Monday's convention speech, but said that Donald Trump rejected her offer to resign in the wake of the controversy that has ensued. "Yesterday, I offered my resignation to Mr. Trump and the Trump family, but they rejected it," Meredith McIver said in a statement. "Mr. Trump told me that people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences.
Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Don't spose we'll ever hear this admission from the nevertrump fairies but Trump has already had a salutary effect on almost all Republicans, even the nevertrumpers.
The vast majority of them are much more defiant and non apologetic and considerably more likely to call a spade a spade when talking about Dems than they were just a year ago.
The only ones truly in the default GOPe historic obsequious mode are utter fastidious squishes like Gerson and Will who have always been the obvious adult victims of mothers who dressed them in short pants, if not skirts, and Buster Brown curls as tots.

You think "lock her up!" and "Lucifer" would have ever been heard at a white gloves, button down Romney convention?

Beasts of England

'Temptations sing!

oh, oh, oh, OH, oh, oh, oh'

Porchlight

Yes, Iggy. His boldness emboldens others. Sounds cliche but of course it's true. I say that as someone totally too chicken to voice my Trump support in public, heh.

Porchlight

When you are on the right side of an issue and have the facts on your side, it is sheer gutlessness and a political felony not to bring them up.

Political felony, I like that. Moral felony, too.

Indulging one's own feels or "conscience" or desire for decorum at the cost of the deaths and ruin that a Clinton presidency would bring is a moral felony.

Porchlight

RattlerGator, beginning to think you were right all along about 4D chess....

Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump 2h2 hours ago

Good news is Melania's speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics especially if you believe that all press is good press!

Or at least making lemonade.

cheerleader

I think Cruz will do what a few of the speakers did last night, like Michael Muckasey, which is talk about the forward direction of the Rebublican party, without once naming Trump's name, but citing general policies that all agree on.

I can also sort of see Cruz giving an all-out endorsement, but that would alienate his hardcore #nevertrump supporters.

cheerleader

rse,

from the former thread, Ed Burge, whoever he is, cited Sam Clovis as Trump's campaign manager. Sam is a Trump campaign co-chair and advisor. The campaign manager is Paul Manafort.

BeenThereDoneThat

I'm enjoying the full-throated truth-telling emanating from the convention speakers - it's like a political catharsis!

GOPe better be wising up AND FOLLOWING SUIT. This is no time for shrinking or stumbling before the corrupt Democrat party media-complex.

Outside of unemployed campaign consultants, do any of these people exist?

cheerleader

Calling Trump supporters "brownshirts" was common among the commenters at the R-S.

Jack is Back! (As Mr. Fixit)

If I was Ted Cruz and wanted to appel to Trump supporters as a true conservative then I would make the following observations:

"Humans originally existed as members of small bands of nomadic hunter/gatherers. They lived on deer in the mountains during the summer and would go to the coast and live on fish and lobster in the winter.

The two most important events in all of history were the invention of beer and the invention of the wheel.

Beer required grain and that was the beginning of agriculture. Neither the glass bottle nor aluminum can were invented yet, so while our early humans were sitting around waiting for them to be invented, they just stayed close to the brewery. That's how villages were formed.

The wheel was invented to get man to the beer.

These two were the foundation of modern civilization and together were the catalyst for the splitting of humanity into two distinct subgroups: 1. Liberals. 2. Conservatives.

Some men spent their days tracking and killing animals to BBQ at night while they were drinking beer. This was the beginning of what is known as the Conservative movement.

Other men who were less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly BBQ's and doing the sewing, fetching, and hair dressing. This was the beginning of the Liberal movement.

Some of these liberal men evolved into women. Others became known as girlie-men. Some noteworthy Liberal achievements include the domestication of cats, the invention of group therapy, group hugs, and the concept of democratic voting to decide how to divide the meat and beer that Conservatives provided.

Over the years, Conservatives came to be symbolized by the largest, most powerful land animal on earth, the elephant. Liberals are symbolized by the jackass for obvious reasons.

Modern Liberals like "Lite" beer (with lime added), but most prefer white wine or imported bottled water. They eat raw fish but like their beef well done. Sushi, tofu, and vegan are standard Liberal fare. Another interesting evolutionary side note: many Liberal women have higher testosterone levels than their men.

Most college professors, social workers, personal injury attorneys, journalists, film makers in Hollywood, group therapists and community organizers are Liberals. Liberals meddled in our national pastime and invented the designated hitter rule because it wasn't fair to make the pitcher also bat.

Conservatives drink real beer. They eat red meat and still provide for their women. Conservatives are big game hunters, rodeo cowboys, lumberjacks, construction workers, firemen, medical doctors, police officers, engineers, corporate executives, athletes, members of the military, airline pilots, and generally anyone who works productively. Conservatives who own companies hire other conservatives who want to work for a living.

Liberals produce little or nothing. They like to govern the producers and decide what to do with the production. Liberals believe Europeans are more enlightened than Americans. That is why most of the Liberals remained in Europe when Conservatives were coming to America. They crept in after the Wild West was tamed and created a business of trying to get more for nothing.

Here ends today's lesson in world history. It should be noted that a Liberal may have a momentary urge to angrily respond to this post.

A Conservative will simply laugh and be so convinced of the absolute truth of this history that it will be shared immediately to other true believers and to just tick off more liberals.

And there you have it. Let your next action reveal your true self.

I'm going to have another beer and shoot something.

Thank you and let's Make America Great Again"

Theo

I am not sure why we are continuing to do an autopsy on Melania's speech, but I think that today's news subtly admits what should have been admitted up front -- some staffer screwed up. It was such a minor screw up that she did not even get fired for it.

I think that there is zero plausible reason to believe that this was some kind of multidimensional chess move -- you have to start with the premise that EVERYTHING Trump and his team does is just perfect to believe that.

Rather, it appears that after some momentary disarray they have recovered and are handling the fallout well. There was minimal damage in the first place but the damage control is now in place.

As I have said before, even though I think that this was not at all planned out, the net effect is zero or even a bit positive as the average voter is going to think that Trump cannot be that bad if his critics spend this much time and energy on the authorship of a few clichés in his wife's speech.

cheerleader

Henry,

They exist at the Right Scoop, and I find it hard to see him throwing over their support which has been dog loyal to him since day one.

And he hasn't signed the pledge.

cheerleader

Theo,

The only thing I've ever agreed with you, is that someone screwed up.

But it goes deeper than the actual screw-up, it's who hired the screw-up. If it was Manafort, they can't let him look bad.

cheerleader

I'm liking the music aspect.

It's not overloud, the kind of music you have to yell over, and it's not piped in. It's just there discreetly filling in the empty moments, and people were having fun last night dancing.

Miss Marple 2

Boy, this downsizing is really an eye-opener. I found a drawer which had all my old unused bumper stickers for Phil Graham, Mitt Romney, Bob Dole, John McCain and local officials.

I decided to make a box of stuff for auction which includes old newspapers from WWII, the bumper stickers, and the White House Christmas cards.

I got great joy from those when I received them, but the country has moved on and so have I.

Frau Anno Schnuff

National Review take on Cruz:

There is evidence, too, of changes in Cruz’s legislative approach — a shift to what some of his Senate colleagues have begun calling “Cruz 2.0.” He sided with Arizona senator John McCain and against Utah senator Mike Lee last month, for example, voting in favor of an amendment that would have allowed the FBI to access Internet browsing histories without a court order. Until now, in battles between privacy and security, Cruz has almost always sided with libertarians, favoring privacy rights over security concerns. He joined Rand Paul in his 2014 filibuster protesting the Obama administration’s claim that it had the right to assassinate American citizens in the United States, and applauded Paul’s filibuster of the National Security Agency’s bulk-data collection, though he didn’t join it. “He has shifted towards the Cotton-Rubio position and away from the Rand-Lee one on a number of . . . issues,” says a senior Senate aide, referring to the divide between the hawkish national-security positions of Rubio and Arkansas senator Tom Cotton and the relatively more dovish stances of Paul and Lee.

Speaking of elephants -- I complained years ago about the docile elephant used as the Repbulican symbol. A virile elephant charges with its trunk upright. It seems the RNC (or someone) agrees with me.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--But it goes deeper than the actual screw-up, it's who hired the screw-up.--

I read, perhaps here, that the writer is a long time associate of Trump and has ghost written a couple of his books.

Beasts of England

You could go visit Patterico, henry. They're more off the rails than any group out there. Silly macho grande boys.

daddy

Good Morning.

Alive and well! No evacuations last night. Wind remains calm and both lines of the Coastal Highway remain open. Just stepped outside and where yesterday looking up the street from our driveway I saw the menacing big plume at the top of the mountain ridge, today from the same viewpoint I don’t see any plume at all. It is there, but it's view today is blocked by the ridge top, and its not pointed towards us---it’s veering east toward Girdwood. Will keep you updated. On the first cup of joe!

Also I have to give a shout out to Mike Huckabee. I saw him on TV this morning. The volume was off, but it strikes me that he has been a voice of calm and stability and unity and good cheer throughout this entire Campaign Season. I rarely pay any attention to that Bass Player, but I think he has really been a steady keel of the Republican ship these last 8 months, and just thought I’d say thanks to the ex-Governor for his predictability and good cheer.

Porchlight

The full statement from Meredith McIver, the speechwriter, is genius. Takes responsibility. Praises Melania and Michelle. Trump looks like standup guy. Speechwriter is young and female so who is going to object to this?

Typepad is not letting me link, but just go to the Trump website.

One more for RattlerGator and then I'll move on - this was a comment at The_Donald:

19D chess

1. Free publicity about Melania

2. Press forced to compare first lady Melania with first lady Michelle

3. Press forced to admit that Barack and Michelle have also plagiarised

4. Carson links Clinton to alinsky

5. Google Searches for alinsky way up

6. Top result is an article showing that Michelle plagiarised from alinsky

7. Tweets out a wink and a nod to 4D chess (he said basically, "I got a lot of free Press out of it at least 😉😉" )

8. Gets to play the kind and generous boss and BREAK THE MOLD by NOT firing the guilty speech writer

I would add another - the letter Hillary wrote to Alinsky in 1971 is also getting a lot of hits now.

Porchlight

daddy, thanks for the good news.

Huckabee at his best is a sensible guy and a happy warrior. We can't have too many of those.

cheerleader

Being as Cruz did want to be an actor and took acting lessons, maybe he could do some theater, and dramatically sign the pledge at the podium.

henry

Beasts, the question is if there are hundreds of them (which would flood various blog comment sections), or millions of them (which the Kristol ilk would like you to believe). If the former, well meh. The convention seems to indicate a "meh" approach to these people is correct (as does the sum of Jeb! and Kasich votes in the primaries).

Captain Hate

Good point on the elephant, Frau, but also note the curl of the tail. When Teddy meets another male dog for the first time, his tail arches forward until it's determined that there's no need to fight. Until then, it's all systems on alert and ready to rock.

cheerleader

Frau,

Somewhere along the way I picked up the superstition that an elephant with trunk portends bad luck.

Beasts of England

I've done an almost 180 on Huckabee (almost because I never really hated him and now don't want to hear him all the time; maybe a 120) and regard him as an asset in small doses.

Beasts of England

It's an exceptional convention logo. They even went with the pre-CBS headstock on the stylized Stratocaster™. :)

BeenThereDoneThat

Seems to me Trump exhibits all the right instincts for pulling the country back from the abyss. The pretty-boy conservative faction needs to get off its stack of talking points and think-tank dissertations and get back to BASICS.

The only way to do this is for Trump & Co to keep bulldozing through the dem-prog Hillary BS, never apologizing for telling the truth and never giving up one inch of gained territory. Never.

Matt

JiB;

Now that I work with a lot of therapists I would say that the general line is that people have to take ownership of their actions, hardly a liberal trait.

One also finds that in the recovery and mental health community there is a tremendous amount of faith. This is because, as AA points out, what people have been doing on their own isn't quite working out the way they thought. Dr. Harlod Koenig at Duke's Center for Spirituality, Theology, and Health is all over this stuff. Faith works, put very simply.

Yes there is some dewey eyed idealism, but when you are working with the hard cases it sometimes takes that just to maintain one's sanity.

I think we are seeing a turning point in conservatism. If you followed HR 2646, which was gutted by a combination of the trial bar, the Scientologists, and the "disabled rights" advocates, it was Rep Tim Murphy who recognized the problem that the families are often shut out of the care plan for their family member. That the antis shut this down is criminal.

It is amazing how, by the way, I keep on finding out that the Scientologists have hijacked mental health care in this country. Thomas Szasz was in their pay and he convinced the American Psychiatric Association to urge the closure of the state mental hospitals in the 60's and 70's.

They continue to have influence through their front organizations and if you read the Disabled America (the big advocacy group) literature and outreach, it closely mirrors that of the Scientologists. Somehow these bloodsuckers keep on getting government funding.

If one looks at the problems of homelessness, mental illness, addiction and incarceration holistically, it makes all the sense in the world to treat them as such. Economically, spiritually and ethically, it is the right thing to do.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

IIRC it was the famous cartoonist Thomas Nast who came up with the respective party symbols, Deb, not the parties.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--Thomas Szasz was in their pay...--

Why don't you ask this gal for her opinion.

Porchlight

Frau, I'm a fan of the Frankoma GOP elephant mugs. Trunk up - the trunk is actually the handle. Makes a nice desk caddy for pencils and pens - I gave one to my dad (1980) and that's what he uses it for.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/121044854184

The Dem ones are not nearly as attractive. The tail is the handle, so you're grabbing it almost by the butt. And the ears are pressed down and the thing just looks vaguely unhappy.

Frankoma is made in Oklahoma, if that helps explain the difference. :)

I don't know how I missed Porchlight's post above.

I wonder if there will now be a thorough media vetting of Meredith McIver.

Captain Hate

Btw I'm ready to admit that all my misgivings about having the convention here are all null and void and that maryrose had her fingers on the pulse of things. cheerleader

Captain,

At first, I didn't believe it about Greta, but I did further research, and learned that both she and her husband are scientologists.

She does a good honest job as a journalist, that's all that matters imo.

Miss Marple 2

Oh, they are now going on about how many answers to the speech controversy there wee, and generally running around in circles.

Meanwhile, Trump buzzed Cleveland in his jet, then came into the convention area near the lake in his own helicopter, where he looked like he was already president.

In addition, the whole attractive family was there to greet him along with Mike and Karen Pence.

Greetings_Puny_Humans

Did Cruz only support legal status and H1-B visas during the Gang of Eight fight as a way to "poison" the bill... or was he expousing these things even a couple of years later prior to this nomination season?"

My response would neither be lie nor truth, just an opinion. And my opinion would be of no value to you because apparently you have looked into the heart of Ted Cruz and already know the answer.
