PD

When I got up this morning, I saw the alert on my phone that Fidel was dead at 90.

I go to McDonald's each morning for coffee. At the hour I go (5 am), the staff is entirely Latino. I said to the people behind the counter, "big news out of Cuba today."

The Latina manageress immediately said, "Thank God we are *here*." (in the US)

Not a fan of the Castro regime, I guess.

Marlene

First!

Marlene

Guess not!

PD

Prediction: Obama will praise Fidel for having been a strong leader. Then, in contrast to the outrage expressed when Trump said Putin was a strong leader, our press will praise Obama for being able to realize that not all countries want to be a US-style democracy, and for being able to appreciate the differences between different styles of "governance,"

Another prediction: The press will entirely fail to pick up on the difference between how Trump could say Putin was a strong leader without actually admiring him, and the way Obama admired Fidel.

PD

First time ever I've been first. All the more remarkable when facing strong competition from Marlene. :-)

buccr morgan

Yikes its par for the course, PD.

peter

I am still giggling about how our very own narciso broke it to the world--

"el coma andante is dead"

PD

BTW, I notice that "Latino" seems to be displacing "Hispanic." When and why did this happen?

Always good to begin the morning by exposing my cultural ignorance.

buccr morgan

Its fitting peter.

Whereas they celebrated the iron lady's passing.

They love Fidel.

He's warming a seat for them.

I haven't had breakfast. Is it too early in the day for leftover turkey?

Old Lurker

Why should anyone with a checkbook be allowed to send an election to recount hell and the courts? Won't that mean every future election will end up in court since there will always be a Soros? However this ends, half the country is going to feel "they was robbed" and the stinkin system...stinks.

I'm sending the cleaning crew back to the Ledge.

jimmyk

2016 is going out with a bang, I must say. Any chance brother Raul could kick off as well, and maybe the planes carrying Maduro and Morales collide on the way to the funeral?

PD

Our neighbor lady has a dog named Fidel. Reminds me of the saying:

"They shall name their sons Paul and their dogs Nero."

Old Lurker

Heck with the leftover turkey PD. My goal it to finish the Pecan Pie before anyone else spots it.

James D.

PD @ 9:00

I'd be shocked if it doesn't happen precisely as you described.

jimmyk

Why should anyone with a checkbook be allowed to send an election to recount hell and the courts?

Whatever happened to "Vote fraud doesn't exist"?

States should have a rule that you can't buy a recount if the gap is more than half a percent.

Beasts of England

No need for that, OL - it's little more than an effort to delegitimize Trump's victory. Don't worry, be happy!!

jimmyk

Is Martha Radatz going to cry again?

Cecil Turner

Why should anyone with a checkbook be allowed to send an election to recount hell and the courts?

Is that the rule? I'd think the petitioner would have to have standing . . . . which would mean either the winner or runner up (and I can't see why the winner would want to).

PD

Now that trade is flowing freely again, maybe the tearful faithful can import some Cuban play-doh, to have an authentic mourning experience.

Beasts of England

Orgeron named head coach at LSU.

jimmyk

which would mean either the winner or runner up

It seems that Stein was able to force a recount in WI. So it seems that any candidate who can raise the money can do it.

Old Lurker

Cecil, in WI it is Stein who finished third with 1% of the total vote who is the moving party. A Soros will always be able to plant such a party in any election if that is all it takes to buy a recount. In this case, Crooked Hillary does not even have to dirty her hands.

sbw

Andrea Mitchell: He will be revered as someone who brought education . . . to all his people.

Andrea doesn’t know the difference between education and indoctrination.

Or doesn’t care.

Cecil Turner

Well, I guess that makes sense if you could convince somebody the margin was such that even a Green could've won. Having a hard time seeing it myself.

PD

A while back Hannity had a film crew over to Cuba to investigate how good health care really is there. What they found wasn't so impressive.

Old Lurker

47:46:1 and the 1%'er gets to buy the recount?

Ain't right.

peter

Narc, did you mean "the coma who walks" or "how does he walk?" My espanol is weak.

jimmyk on iPhone

I think it's 'the walking coma', which seems apt for Curb Dive as well.

And yes I am celebrating, and would be more if Cuba long national nightmare was truly and fully over...

Miss Marple the Deplorable

PD,

I vividly remember when Castro took over. My parents subscribed to Life magazine and they had pictures of the revolutionaries out n the hills, and when he took over there was a big spread abuot it.

Don't know why that made such an impression on me as I was only 11.

I also remember the traumatic Cuban Missile Crisis, because it my parents were truly worried. We even had to drill at school going down to the fall out shelter in the sub basement of my middle school. I remember that like yesterday. Can still see the big tins of crackers they had stored down there.

I guess the left has dropped that inconvenient memory down the rabbit hole.

13 Cuban Military Actions in Angola (1961–2002)
14 South African Border War

17 Nicaraguan Civil War

These are the conflicts in which Cuba sent troops. I got it off Wikipedia. Castro caused a lot more deaths than just in Cuba. And this doesn't count his support of Chavez in Venezuela.

If there were one, sbw, the only change I would propose would be to make the electoral college vote automatic. Under my proposal, there would be no electors; there would be electoral points. As is the case now with selecting electors, states would have the decision making power to assign points (winner take all, congressional districts plus two, or other method). Congress would need to certify the points, as it does now with the votes of the electors, as a check on state shenanigans. My proposal is a modest one. It keeps the current system and eliminates the possibility of unfaithful electors.

the Constitution provides a remedy for this as well. Congress may remove the right of judicial review of specific laws, if it wishes.

Trudeau slobbers. I suppose I shouldn't be shocked, but I am.

“It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of Cuba’s longest serving President.

“Fidel Castro was a larger than life leader who served his people for almost half a century. A legendary revolutionary and orator, Mr. Castro made significant improvements to the education and healthcare of his island nation.

“While a controversial figure, both Mr. Castro’s supporters and detractors recognized his tremendous dedication and love for the Cuban people who had a deep and lasting affection for “el Comandante”.

“I know my father was very proud to call him a friend and I had the opportunity to meet Fidel when my father passed away. It was also a real honour to meet his three sons and his brother President Raúl Castro during my recent visit to Cuba.

“On behalf of all Canadians, Sophie and I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and many, many supporters of Mr. Castro. We join the people of Cuba today in mourning the loss of this remarkable leader.” "

Here's Trump, for comparison:

"Today, the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who oppressed his own people for nearly six decades. Fidel Castro’s legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights.

"While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve.

"Though the tragedies, deaths and pain caused by Fidel Castro cannot be erased, our administration will do all it can to ensure the Cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty. I join the many Cuban Americans who supported me so greatly in the presidential campaign, including the Brigade 2506 Veterans Association that endorsed me, with the hope of one day soon seeing a free Cuba."
