The NY Daily News makes a mid-course correction on Trump. No glimpse yet of any such sanity at the NYT or WaPo.

The change followed a shakeup in editorial leadership just weeks before Nov. 8. The previous editor, Jim Rich, had been resisting pressure from management to soften the Trump covers, people familiar with the matter said. He was told they were diminishing an already much diminished print subscriber base, these people said, particularly among blue-collar readers in certain corners of New York’s outer boroughs, where Trump’s nationalistic populism apparently resonates in a way that is anathema to the city’s cosmopolitan districts and immigrant enclaves.

jimmyk

DrJ, I don't know that I can fisk that editorial, except to say that much of what it says is true by definition, and therefore begs the question. Sure, current account deficits can be perfectly benign and even beneficial, but they aren't necessarily so. The one incorrect thing in it is when they say it's not something that needs to get paid back. We're essentially borrowing from the rest of the world, so we do have to pay it back. The question is why are we borrowing? Are we putting the money to good use? Not if we're using it to pay the likes of Mustafa Ali.

As I've said, I'm a free trader and don't really agree with Trump on these issues, but that doesn't mean we have to be Dr Pangloss and say whatever happens is fine. I'd just focus on draining the swamp.

They were holding their stepmom in captivity and trying to loot her after her husband (their father?) passed away. Reading it, and I might be mistaken, but at least one of them when to Pakistan and returned recently and the article is kinda mushmouthed as to where the dad died. 2 reports were filed with Fairfax County Sheriff's Office regarding the stepmom (no charges? no visit from Adult Protective Services {although the stepmom is a foreign national she would still have rights}?

From Steph's 10:20, I got a kick out of reading the names of the 2 DC Wine Bar Owners who are suing Trump Tower for stealing their customers:

Cork Wine Bar owners Khalid Pitts and Diane Gross

Ha! Charles Dickens couldn't have come up with less sympathetic names for that pair of losers, who both previously worked for liberal lawmakers or groups, filed an unfair competition lawsuit alleging Trump and his hotel put local businesses at a disadvantage because foreign dignitaries, lobbyists and government officials would rather do business in a business owned by the commander in chief.
------------------------
Clarice: Hey Janet, where ya' wanna go for drinks tonight? Over to that Gross Pitts place, or Trump Tower?

daddy

And from JimmyK's 09:44 Politico story on the NY Post's new editorial policy of being less gross and in the pits when covering Trump, I enjoyed reading the comments from "unnamed staffers" at that rag not enjoying the new directives:

...the Manhattan-based tabloid has largely pulled back on its famous anti-Trump covers in favor of a decidedly more measured tone...they were diminishing an already much diminished print subscriber base...particularly among blue-collar readers in certain corners of New York’s outer boroughs, where Trump’s nationalistic populism apparently resonates in a way that is anathema to the city’s cosmopolitan districts and immigrant enclaves...

...Now, many News staffers and alumni feel like the air has been sucked out of the room, and they are perhaps coming to terms with the notion that Trump is more popular with segments of their readership than they thought...

“The dissent is probably close to unanimous,” one insider told POLITICO...there’s a palpable sense of demoralization within the newsroom.

...The energy has left the room. It just really feels like a missed opportunity. That’s what’s killing me.”

...“After nearly two years of calling Trump what he is — a clown and a dangerous racist, among other things — the paper normalized him at the worst possible time....

>>>Questions about the possible connection were widely dismissed four months ago. But the FBI's investigation remains open, the sources said, and is in the hands of the FBI's counterintelligence team -- the same one looking into Russia's suspected interference in the 2016 election.

One U.S. official said investigators find the server relationship "odd" and are not ignoring it. But the official said there is still more work for the FBI to do. Investigators have not yet determined whether a connection would be significant.<<<

I'll tell you what is odd. A sitting secretary of state having her own server to conduct official business. Or the FBI not terribly interested in the Awan Bros. Or DHS letting the Orlando killer's wife go wandering around for a few months. That's odd.

Hate Crime Hoax: Michigan Snowflake Scratched Own Face with 'Safe Space' Safety Pin

Bass also claimed that the attack was part of the alleged surge in hate crimes following the election of Donald Trump a week earlier.

"I've heard of other people experiencing incidents recently, but not to me," she told police investigators...

...Bass eventually confessed that she had cut her own face after getting out of her Woman's Literature class...

“I had been in a discussion in my women’s lit [sic] weirdly, and there were a few people in my class that sort of said some things that scared me,”...“It was more like I wanted a concrete reason to be scared then to just talk, I guess.”

So her "safe space" safety pin" became the implement of her "Trump Hate Crime."

Claim is that RINOs are using their money to attack conservative Repubs instead of Dems.

Club for Growth:
"I thought House Republican leaders had already hit rock bottom, pushing an Obamacare Lite plan and trying to jam it down the throats of House conservatives.

I was wrong.

Today, their bought-and-paid-for establishment allies, the American Action Network (the remnants of the old Boehner PAC), announced a six-figure ad buy in the 30 districts of members of the House Freedom Caucus. They’re being attacked for daring to oppose Ryancare and its complete failure to repeal costly parts of Obamacare. The RINOs are even betraying President Trump and refusing to keep his campaign promise to fully repeal Obamacare and lower insurance premiums by making insurance companies compete.

RINO donors to Ryan are funding these attacks."

Iggy @1:04, I was taking issue with this:

Yet much of this foreign capital does go to finance mortgages and consumer loans, which help the U.S. standard of living. And much is invested in land, plants and equipment and financial assets, none of which needs to be repaid and all of which can make the U.S. economy and exports more globally competitive.

If furriners make loans to consumers and businesses, those loans have to be repaid. Now it's true that just like any other loan, they can be rolled over and never repaid, but the interest has to get paid on them. Technically the capital inflow could be sales of real estate or stock in companies, but then you're paying the dividends forever.

Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, it depends on whether it's going to productive investments. If we're borrowing to fund green energy projects to save the planet, not so good.

Also in the WSJ, Anthony Kennedy continues his drift toward liberalism, undermining our jury system:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/politically-correct-juries-1489103441

Pena-Rodriguez declares a new racial standard for overturning jury verdicts that was rejected by Colorado and has no constitutional basis. It also doesn’t establish a bright-line test of what constitutes unacceptable racial prejudice. Judges are apparently supposed to know it when they see it. “Not every offhand comment indicating racial bias or hostility will justify setting aside the no-impeachment bar,” Justice Kennedy concedes, but that ambiguous caveat won’t prevent endless complaints and appeals.
