Frau Emil Zátopek

Just warming up to the last thread. No lazy Saturday at JOM.

daddy

Good Morning!

Congress Seeks Wasserman Schultz Testimony in IT Scandal Investigation

It remains unclear what types of background check Awan and the other staffers were given, if any at all, according to Rep. Louie Gohmert (R., Texas)

Frau Fidibus

exdem- 25 Jul 2016 was announcement of FBI looking into hacking of DNC by "Russians."
This followed the DNC Wikileaks. The FBI "takes this kind of breach of security seriously."

Frau Fidibus

daddy, I missed all the fun Mark Steyn had yesterday with Rep. Gohmert. I hope you caught it.

Frau Emi l

What happened to my Emi

Frau Emil Zátopek

l Zátopek? I hoped to be first with long distance references.

daddy

Reuters: The migrant who killed one person and injured six others in a knife attack in a Hamburg supermarket was a radicalised Islamist known to German security agencies, but also believed to have psychological problems. Officials said on Saturday the agencies had believed he posed no immediate threat.

Frau Emil Zátopek

It's just the two of us, daddy.
Reading something good at present? I just finished Alexander Rose's 'Washington's Spies" (the Culper Ring) and will start the Winik's "The Great Upheaval" which finally arrived.

daddy

I missed it Frau.

I caught some of Steyn in Rush's first hour, then I fell asleep:( I'll click around.

I am hopeful that now that Trey Gowdy took over from Jason Chaffetz as head of the House Ethics Committee, that he can turn his thunderous legal mind on Debbie Wasserman Schultz if the House Ethics Committee decides to start finally grilling her.

Will he take the opportunity to grill her, or will he take a pass? Guess we'll find out.

Frau das Unternehmen der Wega

According to one German report, the "migrant without a motive", was to leave Germany but had no real identity papers so he had no place else to go. Maybe a territory could be established to take care of this problem. An old German language SF radio play told of sending undesirables to Venus where they were left to fend for themselves. The plan backfired, of course.

daddy

Frau,

I've got my copy of Winik's "Upheaval" from our used book store, but I won't start reading it until I have a long trip so that I have plenty of time to get into it serious. I hardly ever read anything at home since I'm addicted to the Internet. I don't know how you guys manage to read anything when you've got WiFi nearby. My guess is that once I retire I will never read another book in my life:)

Frau das Unternehmen der Wega

DWS - Grill, bake, roast or pan fry all sound good to me.

Now why would you think that the authorities would look at those 2 facts:

(A) Islamic Radicalization, plus

(B) Personal insanity, and conclude

(C) No threat to society.

Frau das Unternehmen der Wega

Ha! My used copy came from Canada in good condition and nicely packaged, it was.

Haven't started catch-up so apologies if previously posted, but here's Andy McCarthy's latest on the Awan's:

Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the Pakistani IT Scammers

By then, the proceeds of the fraudulent $165,000 loan they’d gotten from the Congressional Federal Credit Union had been sent ahead. It was part of a $283,000 transfer that Awan managed to wire from Capitol Hill. He pulled it off — hilariously, if infuriatingly — by pretending to be his wife in a phone call with the credit union. Told that his proffered reason for the transfer (“funeral arrangements”) wouldn’t fly, “Mrs.” Awan promptly repurposed: Now “she” was “buying property.” Asking no more questions, the credit union wired the money . . . to Pakistan. As you let all that sink in...

Frau das Unternehmen der Wega

OT -
daddy, our younger granddaughter has a two-week internship at the National Observatory in Sunspot, NM starting this coming Monday. She will probably be polishing mirrors and doing other worker bee chores. She and we are excited as can be. She's from the Seattle area so thank goodness she will be inside most of the time. Don't you love the name Sunspot?

Frau das Unternehmen der Wega

Strudelat - missed it by that much. Consarn.

Imran Awan could be a long lost son of Billy Jeff and the Grifters.

Has anyone seen him recently? All he had to do was dial Uber and get on the road to Canada or Mexico and then let his wife help him reach Pakistan.

You did it MM - now let's hope Trump follows thru (getting rid of Congress cheating on Obamacare). Thanks!

Spoiler alert for the distance debate: Emil Zatopek is definitely in the mix as the GOAT.

Barbara

Exdemocrat & Frau,

The interesting thing about the comment by the FBI in response to the question of the Agency's role WRT the hacking story was that they were "continuing" to look into it. It seemed to imply that the FBI had been looking at this prior to July 2016.

Just an oddity in the way their answer was phrased. Or maybe not. The allegation from the DNC was that the hacking was done by the Russians. They stated this early on just after Wiki released the files.

daddy

Frau,

On my first Hutzler Lab link, I loved this bit asking for help in certain areas: Check out item number 9 on the laundry list:

If you want to know about (or already know about!) any of the following, then we definitely have something for you to work on, and you should get in touch:

Lasers and optics

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Jane,

I daresay it was Tammy Bruce, but I will live in the fantasy that Trump follows my every whim.

If that is so, he has a scheme for trapping Soros with the the stock market. (And maybe this also explains Scaramucci.)

By the way, there was some jerk on with Leland Vitter on Fox who pompously said he didn't think Trump had that power (to remove Congress's coverage). This was said like Trump was some moron who didn't know the constitution and such.

Congress has to buy aides plans on the small business plan through the DC exchange. This was done to give them group insurance, as otherwise aides were going to quit because they couldn't afford the coverage. This was done by a ruling considering them small businesses, done by Kathleen Sebelius. Trump can just have Price undo that ruling, and voila!

maryrose

An opinion from a hyper focused person can be stated.
How it will be regarded is another matter.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

The image lyle was describing last thread. Right click, per usual, if too large;

Miss Marple the Deplorable

When I was a freshman in high school Jesse Owens came to speak at our school. I can still see him, perched on a stool in the center of the gym.

He told all about how he trained for the Olympics and all about being in Munich in front of Hitler. This was, of course, only 20 years after the end of the war in 1965. We were mesmerized, as he was a very dramatic speaker.
I never forgot it.

DrJ

MR,

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm just in a different area than most here. And I may not have known about Yuan Lee had one of his students not lived next to the first MrsJ.

There are a lot of really bright people in this world. I am reminded of that each time I review proposals.

Daddy, having your daughter work in a new lab probably is the best thing she can do. She'll be involved with setting things up, instead of washing the metaphorical dishes. That's probably what she would do in a more established lab.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Who is the HR Pompeo might replace?
House of Representatives?
OK by me so long as they get Hulagu Khan to replace the S.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Is "hyper-focused" a polite euphemism for human-alien-reptile hybrid?

henry

McMasters if you believe the later posts in that thread Iggy. Seems he has been playing footsie with McCabe at FBI. With all the rumors and leaks, it could mean replacing HR Puffenstuff (aka CNN HQ).

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Ignatz,

HR McMaster, head of the National Security Council.

There are factions for and against him, and for and against Pompeo. I just saw all the arguing back and forth on Twitter.

I do not like that Cernovich guy acting like he is affecting policy. There is a reason I don't follow him on Twitter. He has used Trump to gin up his following on Twitter and sell his books. He also has hooked up with Flynn's son and brags about them being friends.

I am leery of almost all of these new-media celebrities, because I don't have any way to vet them and I find that they trade in rumors without named sources just as much as the MSM.

daddy

She'll be involved with setting things up, instead of washing the metaphorical dishes.

Exactly DrJ. She feels she is actually making a real contribution plus enjoying the heck out of the experience. In my experience it is like being a plank owner at a new squadron---you get in on the ground floor and have the opportunity to establish all sorts of things necessary to get the mission done and it's real work and exciting and rewarding. She loves doing real stuff and couldn't be happier.

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

MM, excluding Congress from Obamacare was supposedly illegal, and I'm told all he needs to do is make a phone call.

Who is HR?

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

HR McMaster. Sheesh, everybody knows that, dummy.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Jane,

HR McMaster, head of National Security Council.

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

MM, I should have finished reading your post before replying, that is my understanding too (the small biz thing)

daddy

I thought HR Haldeman was dead.

maryrose

President Trump should stop the special healthcare plan for Congress.
They voted for it, let them live by it. Hardest hit will be Senator McCain

lyle

Thanks for posting that, Ig. Still makes me giggle.

James D.

a radicalised Islamist known to German security agencies, but also believed to have psychological problems. Officials said on Saturday the agencies had believed he posed no immediate threat.

Between this and the link I posted on the last threat about the 20X deportee and sex offender whom the Portland authorities decided to release onto the streets rather than obeying the law and turning him over to the feds for deportation again; what recourse do ordinary citizens have, if they don't want to be raped or murdered by criminals the government knows to be dangerous, and could remove from the country, but instead allows to roam freely?

maryrose

MM:
Jesse Owens, that is quite a wonderful experience.
I can't imagine what that was like in Berlin.
He made track and field cool.

maryrose

JamesD:
I am at the point where I say grab them as they leave the courthouse and escort them to the authorities in ICE.
Then lose the paperwork.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

maryrose,

Berlin! You are right, not Munich. Guess i was remembering the Munich Olympics with the terror attack.

You would think I wouldn't have mistyped that. I lived across from the Army Barracks which had been converted from Olympic facilities, and the Sportshalle (where I briefly saw Frank Zappa before a riot broke out) where indoor games were played was still in existence.

daddy

what recourse do ordinary citizens have, if they don't want to be raped or murdered by criminals the government knows to be dangerous, and could remove from the country, but instead allows to roam freely?

James D,

The rape victim should be able to sue the City for billions for refusing to comply with sensible Federal Law and/or intentionally endangering the public by releasing the known criminal. There has to be some sort of Legal hook available to go after the grossly irresponsible city fathers.

maryrose

Daddy:
Kate Steinle parents tried to sue San Francisco sanctuary city for damages and were shut down.
Meanwhile in Ferguson Missouri Mike Brown's parents get a 1 million dollar settlement from the city

maryrose @3:41 pm,
You are welcome, and thank you!

Re: the possibility of HR McMasters being replaced by Pompeo, that doesn't come as too much of a surprise given reports of McMasters' tendency to lecture the President, and the claims that leaks have been coming out of his shop.

I don't believe that the President needs Senate approval to appoint their replacements, so that's good.

Checking the local weather, I found that tropical storm Hilary is approaching the coast, and while it will create good surf conditions for the U.S. Open in Surfing (who knew), Hilary will cause dangerous conditions for beach goers. Note that this Hilary is spelled with one "l" FWIW.

Jack is Back!

Let me stay on topic: John has lost his New York honesty by a few hundred. If it was my opinion I'd put Serena in about 1,110th place among all tennis pros. Frederick's instructor in Florida would crush her in straight sets and he only plays regional USTA tournaments. She isn't even quick enough to play men's doubles. Mixed doubles, sure but the female member only gets 25% of the male member's serves.

Against men, it would the serve and return of serve where she gets walloped. Not her return but the male players return of her serve. Her first serve is below the normal male second serve plus more spin and accuracy to wide forehand and backhand.

Wasn't it Natase who said the same thing back in the Billy Jean days?

And don't get me started on her match with Bobby Riggs. He'd be ranked 700th in the women's game when he played her.

And I am talking all court surfaces for Serena against men.

Jack is Back!

Oh, and when Usain Bolt can long jump 27+ feet in the same Olympics where he runs and wins the 100, 200 and relay, then and only then, will I consider him Carl Lewis' equal.

Everything you thought about Gail Collins [::spit::] of the Gray Slut is *true*

Mueller's probe into the Trump camp's relationship with Russia terrifies the president, especially if it involves an investigation of Trump family finances. So obviously, we are rooting for Sessions to stay right where he is and, um, keep persecuting immigrants, ratchet up imprisonments for nonviolent crimes and maybe go back to his old dream of imposing the death penalty on marijuana dealers.

Frau Emil Zátopek

TM - for Germans, Emil Zátopek remains "die tschechische Lokomotive." That was a wonderful article you shared about him.

TC,

Tell your daughter that I'm think they may need to consider changing the name of the town from DeadHorse, Alaska to DeadCaribou, Alaska:

Plane hits caribou while trying to land at Deadhorse Airport

A plane trying to land at Deadhorse Airport on Alaska's North Slope hit and killed a caribou with its landing gear on Friday.

...the flight crew saw a caribou on the runway during landing,...

"During the abort procedure, the caribou was struck by the landing gear, and perished," she said. "The pilot saw the caribou prior to landing and initiated a go-around, but not in time to avoid contact with the caribou."...

100 passengers and five crew members onboard the plane.

exdemocrat

Thanks, Barbara. There's a dog that didn't bark issue here for me in that we are informed simply that as of a certain moment the DNC knows its been hacked by Russians and the FBI is in there investigating the situation. But this is chapter 2 of the story not chapter 1. Chapter 1 explains how the FBI got involved in the first place (and, presumably, how the DNC determined it had been 'hacked by the Russians.)
In Chapter 2, the FBI is aok with not directly examining the most obvious evidence of the alleged hack. To make sense of this we need to see chapter 1 - and for some reason we're not being shown it.
why not?

Jack is Back!

While the world is focused on Trump's "coarseness" and Session's "Hitler like demeanor", Israel is on fire. Al Aqsa Mosque (the Holy Mount), Jordan becoming more hostile and Jaffa soon to be in flames.

But it's the Jews so nothing to see here.

daddy

Via the ADN:

Top Democratic congressmen from the House Energy & Commerce Committee and House Natural Resources Committee asked the Government Accountability Office and the Interior Department's independent inspector general to launch investigations into whether Zinke's calls to Murkowski, Sen. Dan Sullivan and others about the health care votes were inappropriate and part of a larger effort.

New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone and New Mexico Rep. Raul Grijalva tied the calls to an editorial on the health care vote written by Energy Secretary Rick Perry. Pallone also asked for an investigation into whether Perry's efforts represented a misuse of taxpayer funds.

"The close timing of these actions suggests an apparent pattern and organized effort within the Trump Administration involving the use of federal resources to advance partisan legislation."

Any bets on whether the Congress will knuckle under and allow this investigation to go forward at Taxpayer expense? I doubt it in the House, but would certainly not be surprised if the Senate happily rolled over to such Anti-Trump grandstanding.

Barbara

exdemocrat,

I agree. Chapter One should be interesting reading.

This is beginning to look like a question of what did they know and when did they know it - and why. The FBI is in this up to their eyebrows, and Sessions via Rosenstein put former FBI Director Mueller in charge of the investigation. As it stands now, Mueller has diverted the investigation away from the principals and is focused on the Democrats dream of probing President Donald Trump's financial empire.

Doesn't pass the smell test.

exdemocrat

Daddy - in the well-written piece you linked to at 03:12 pm, McCarthy seems to be where i was yesterday regarding the Awan bunch - whether they are/were ISI assets. (He needs to borrow my tin foil hat to move a bit faster ;-)). Maybe tomorrow, he'll start to wonder whether, given their access, they were involved in Brennan's scheme to fake the evidence of Russian hacking that Crowdstrike allegedly then found.

The republicans (lower case for a reason) need a Charles Atlas class or two or three. The Dems are sons of the mob and use every intimidation tactic known to every criminal element plus a few new ones.

From yesterday's link to a Freeper research:

From June to November 2016, Fusion GPS employed Orbis Business Intelligence to research Trump. Orbis was formed in 2009 by Christopher Steele, a former MI6 officer stationed in Russia, and Christopher Burrows, a former British Foreign Office official. By July, news about Orbis’ research had leaked widely, with Rubio campaign operative Rick Wilson telling the New York Times that “an investigative reporter for a major news network” contacted him at that time asking him what he knew about the investigation. An MI6 official told the Times that Steele also passed his research on to British intelligence “in late summer or early fall”. In October, the FBI met Steele in Rome and offered him $50,000 to continue investigating Trump.
