Exactly right on the "tax reform." At this point I'd be satisfied with lowering the corporate tax to 20% or so, and make it a territorial one. Then at least the US would be competitive internationally.

There's nothing to be done on the personal side until entitlements are reformed. There's no way that will happen.

Agreed on the corporate tax, DrJ. My impression is that Congress ties its own hands by requiring tax cuts to be 'revenue neutral,' or go through some kind of bogus 'scoring.' Getting rid of those rules, or applying them to spending, would help a lot, though no doubt our GOPe deep staters are happy with the system more or less as it is.

In re: The Oroville Dam article you linked.

Two words a civil engineer hates to hear, "differerntial settlement" especially when it comes to an "earthen" dam. And since this one is the tallest in American holding back, God-only-knows millions of cubic meters of hydraulic energy "ready to rumble", I'd say Governor Moonbeam has a much bigger challenge than how to route the high speed train over a few mountains.

These are times to test the executive decision making skills of a squirrely politician and see how he shakes it all out. Odds are he isn't up to it and someone will have to take the project on with out his and the States poliltical support. Not good.

Thanks for your input. I have a cursory knowledge of engineering but way back in the recesses of my mind is the account of the Johnstown Flood, which was caused by what I believe were similar conditions.

I also note that besides the differential settlement they were also concerned about large trees growing near the damn, whose roots may have clogged some of the drainage. (Trees environmentalists insisted be planted there.)

I didn't expect to find an engineering story on Breitbart, but I thought whoever wrote it did a very good job of explaining the problem and danger.

Tell Ryan and McConnell that their obstructionist tactics have been noted and, unless they quickly turn that around, they can expect to be called as lying about their campaign promises.
