Scoop Johnson

I don't trust any articles that begin with the fake news story based on rumor associated with a guy six feet under: a [dead] "Republican operative contacted Russian hackers in an effort to obtain Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails — and that the operative suggested that Trump adviser Michael Flynn was involved with his effort."

Does the media believe continuing to push fake Russia news helps their side?

Vox...LOL.

Buford Gooch

Thanks, Scoop. My thoughts, stated better than I would have.

Tom Maguire

OK, a story based on the dead guy who may or may not have been in cahoots with the fired guy had better not be the strongest brew in the coffeehouse if the media thinks this story will perk us up.

And I checked the NYTImes archives - in the month prior to a June 9 2016 meeting I didn't find chit-chat about Trump's man-crush on Putin, Russian meddling, or whatever. Trump's controversial "Russia, please hack Hillary's emails" joke was from July 2016.

Still, by now DJT Jr. Needs to know that his every utterance will be parsed and needs to be right the first time.

Beasts of England

Speaking of own goals...

henry

Wasn't it all Fusion GPS (aka the Hillary campaign) pulling a dirty trick on Don Jr using its own Russian "Kremlin Lawyer" as bait? NYT should go back to publishing leaked info (whether classified or imaginary is all good with me).

Captain Hate

Yes, DJTJr can't say 57 states, "my muslim faith" or confuse the Malvinas with the Maldives without being roundly lambasted, amirite?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Concerted effort to go after Trump's children is underway. Ivanka sitting in for her father at a meeting (approved by Angela Merkel) is the current attack on her; Jared and Don Jr. get attacked over this nothing meeting.

I fully expect Eric and Tiffany will be in the news by the end of the week. They would go after Barron, too, if they weren't afraid of a backlash.

Ivanka sitting in a chair for 20 minutes apparently is so much worse than Bill Clinton putting his wife in charge of the entire healthcare system. Don Jr. being in a meeting with a dodgy character from Russia (who apparently has ties to the dossier manufacturers) is so much worse than the millions that Hillary's foundation took in from foreign governments.

Bah. I don't care if Boris and Natasha had dinner with all 5 of the Trump kids. There was no collusion.

Thomas Collins

The two NY Times stories themselves are a snooze. But that's not the point. The point is that NY Times's role in the Resistance is to get establishment GOPers to turn on President Trump. These articles won't do it, but the efforts will continue.

I hope DJTJr. has a top notch white collar criminal defense lawyer. The other part of NY Times's efforts is to give Mueller cover for a long, drawn out investigation that will include false statement traps.

Clarice Feldman

I think Sessions out to appoint Fitzgerald to investigate Comey's leaks and mishandling of classified information--No?

Old Lurker

MM, I think Trump is using Barron to carry notes to his school chums so they can get to their parents, don't you?

henry

Someone did the math on green energy. The typed up the results. the short version is "boondoggle."

Old Lurker

Last night, Tom Collins pretty well summed up the Mueller box that has Trump right now. I remain mystified what Trump's plan for that is.

rse

MM-did you see the g'town law students complaining that tiffany was offered admission and had decided to attend there?

chelsea wouldn't be offered the chance to be a listening stand-in because there is extensive evidence that what comes in one ear goes out the other with no retention or even impact.

I really think she has trouble following a train of thought.

glasater

Love the smell of prog desperation in the morning.

Porchlight

Trump's children are grownups and obviously actively participated in his campaign (and now administration), so they are fair targets IMO.

However, the idea that going fishing with Russians is "indicative of a mindset" is stupid. Sorry TM.

The third Vox paragraph quoted above shows that even Vox doesn't believe their own BS, so why should we?

Porchlight

Sorry, should clarify. Trump's older children are fair targets. Tiffany and Barron - no.

Tom Maguire
The other part of NY Times's efforts is to give Mueller cover for a long, drawn out investigation that will include false statement traps.

If Mueller can't find a process crime anywhere in Trump's history we are paying him too much.

OK, we are already paying him too much. Let's say, if Team Mueller can't find a process crime they are way over-rated.

I am already dreading the comparisons between whatever is eventually charged against Trump with what was NOT charged against Hillary. On my gloomy days, anyway.

Beasts of England

Howdy, Porchlight!! :)

Porchlight

Yes OL, we had an epic travel day yesterday flying home from Portland, to arrive to a broken AC here in Austin. Yow. Made me even more reluctant to return to reality!

Amazing trip. Seeing glasater and the Man Trans in beautiful Walla Walla was a highlight. :)

Having now actually visited Missoula, I re-read A River Runs Through It on the plane back from Portland. Took the precise length of the flight to read it from start to finish. Had to dab a few tears at the end. Truly remarkable and now I understand it so much better, having waded over the rocks of the Big Blackfoot.

At a bar in Missoula called Charlie B's (incredible old bar) we unknowingly sat at "the Plank" which is the unofficial Bernie HQ in the town. Our host almost got in a fight when one of the regulars at the end of the table called him a "Trumpie" because he didn't agree that Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest basketball player of all time. Missoula still has some wild West elements to it.

Great to be back with y'all. Boy, in the Trump era you really miss a lot of news being mostly out of pocket for a week.

James D.

I remain mystified what Trump's plan for that is.

I know what my plan would be. I'd order AG Sessions to staff up a unit dedicated to aggressively investigating and prosecuting abuses of power, corruption and anything else they can find on spouses, siblings and children of leading Democrats, highly placed bureaucrats appointed by Democrats, prominent GOPe'ers, and important MSM figures.

For every attack on one of President Trump's children, a dozen attacks on the loved ones of his enemies.

Old Lurker

No surprises except that a positive view of colleges and universities is much lower among the GOP people than it used to be.

Gee, Marxist indoctrination, fake rape charges, harrassing pro-Trump people, gender studies, Black Lives Matter, anarchists, etc. etc. AND sky high tuition and student loans!!!

Can't imagine why the numbers changed.

rse

mm-having the overpriced college or university insisting they must increase the rack rate tuition that everyone with equity in a house will be expected to pay so they can offer more financial aid for 1st generation college goers and other desired groups does not do wonders for making you excited about them.

basically they are raising tuition so I can pay for a portion of the cost of someone else's kids too.

OL, have you tried Google Map Street view on Nantucket? I can't get it to work for me.

I'm trying to find my college roommate's in-law's Victorian house on Monomoy Rd across from the town, but I don't recognize it from above. They'd bought it in the 30's, so they looked down at all the new rich houses palaces which they couldn't afford but which drove up their taxes.

Sconset had those tiny cottages that Bette Davis and other stars liked to slum in, didn't it? Only went there once.

Ralph L

Y'all keep calling Chelsea stupid, but she seems to have invented the vertical Tweet.

Porchlight

Thanks, y'all.

OL, it's a terrible movie. I'm glad Norman Maclean didn't live to see it. His son has made it pretty clear that he would not have been pleased.

It is a marvelous book, however. Or story, really - only about one hundred pages.

Tom Maguire
I am miles behind, but what did DJT Jr say the "First Time" that was not right?

From the Vox version:

Still, Trump Jr. has already changed his story about this meeting several times — first claiming he had no such meeting, then claiming it was about the topic of Russian adoptions, and only now admitting he agreed to take it because an “acquaintance” he met when Trump’s Miss Universe pageant was held in Moscow told him this person “might have information helpful to the campaign.”

None sworn or course but these shifting stories just feeds the press frenzy.

rich

got me daddy. if that is the start, sit as silent as a statue?

and then everyone would have another reason to complain.

Don Jr had a role in the campaign, but not in the administration.

Not enough beer (and far too early for one) for me to make sense of the Boris and Natasha show.

Trump likely knows what the Mueller group is going to come up with. Whatever the counter for that might be it won't get played until Mueller shows his hand.

David, Internet Deplorable

Buckeye,

Recently I have been reading the Art of War for use a chapter header quotes in the novel my wife and I just finished. Your point reminds me very strongly of one of the aphorisms we chose:

You can prevent your opponent from defeating you through defense, but you cannot defeat him without going on the attack.

That is where Trump is with Mueller. He may be able to fend off all his attempts to frustrate President Trump's agenda, but he will still be reacting. Until he gets out front of this and destroys Mueller, Mueller is going to be a constant thorn in his side.

Mueller needs to be fired TODAY.

David

Reflecting on Porch and her family's visit, there was so much to talk about and 'do' and missed that I'm making a list for the next visit :-)

Porchlight

good grief. His original statement, and subsequent ones, have been the meeting was set up under a pretext and then shifted to the Magnitsky Act and adoptions (an issue even taken up by progressives). Dave (in MA)

rich

I suppose he might have misplaced an oxford comma, an article, or rearranged a few statements ...

He must be a Russian Illegal and wicked deep cover operator.

Old Lurker

Too late, David.

His last chance was a few weeks back when it became obvious that there was no basis whatsoever in the narrow scope of the investigation Rosenstein gave him, and in fact it had been a Comey plot all along. He would have had a lot of people OK with firing the guy - or better having Rosenstein do it "on his own" - to avoid an open ended wild goose chase like so many of us remember from the past and expect for sure this time. All those Clintonista gunslingers Mueller hired would have made it credible too.

Now, it's too late. They (all Dems and some R's) will attempt an impeachment which will probably not succeed but will do severe damage to the MAGA agenda and the midterms. Assuming it fails, the 2018 Meme will be "give us Congress and we will rid you of Trump" and that will rally the troops big time.

rich

Welcome back Porchlight and wonder reading about your JOM adventure in the Pacific Northwest.

Captain Hate

HOF zombie:

I assume that everyone here understand that the ENTIRE "Russiagate" scandal is a massive exercise in "concern trolling" -- pretending to be upset about something you assume is upsetting to your political opponents.

In realityland, the Left are all crypto-commies, and for 70 years hopes and prayed that Russia (i.e. the USSR) would win the Cold War and turn Earth communist.

And they mocked right-wingers who were afraid of "the Rooskies!"

Fast forward to today, an the Left STILL has a completely dated misperception of conservatives and how we think and feel, and the Left falsely assumes that we are all stuck in the past and that we are all still triggered by "the Rooskies!" and that we crouch in our nuclear bunkers mumbling about precious bodily fluids.

So they thought, "How can we (the Left) make right-wingers disenchanted with Trump? Bingo! We'll associate him with "the Russians," which the stupid paleo-cons will think that he's in bed with the commies!"

So the Left went on this elaborate masquerade to pretend that THEY were upset that Trump was a Russian commie spy -- for the sole purpose of making US upset that he's a Russian commie spy.

Of course, the Left would in reality LOVE IT if Trump was a traitor and a commie spy (::coughObamacough:. But they are only pretending otherwise as part of a gigantic theater production to make us join them in their faux "concern."

The whole charade has failed spectacularly, but that is the origin of it.

boris

Two different explanations for Trump Jr meeting:
"They led us to expect intel about ...
(1) Clinton COLLUDING WITH RUSSIANS
(2) but they only talked about adoptions."

rich

exactly.

wtf?

Clarice Feldman

I feel there's no need for me to strategize this for Trump. He and his lawyers are shrewder than I am.

Buckeye

That is where Trump is with Mueller. He may be able to fend off all his attempts to frustrate President Trump's agenda, but he will still be reacting. Until he gets out front of this and destroys Mueller, Mueller is going to be a constant thorn in his side.

Mueller needs to be fired TODAY.

Would be far better if the "public" fired Mueller. The challenge is making a case for it.

henry

Comey slinging classified info to all and sundry with his "notes" has to put Mueller on the spot. That is the one obvious crime in the Comey firing (which is where he's searching for obstruction).

Clarice Feldman

How did the Russian lawyer get a visa after being denied one? who did that and why? why was GPS (Dossier) involved in this set up mtg?

Porchlight

Comey is the only reason we have Mueller. Comey leaked classified info in order to prompt the alleged "call" for Mueller. The whole investigation, such as it is, is a sham.

But there is no way to "get out in front of it." If Trump fired Mueller there would probably be another Mueller appointed to investigate the Mueller firing.

Let the whole thing collapse on its own. It's a joke and the public is growing tired of it. These little mini-flareups are meaningless, just as all the little flareups during the campaign were ultimately meaningless.

Congress is in the real precarious position, for deliberately refusing to advance the agenda they were elected to advance.

 narciso.

The summary of the meeting linked by Clarice at 1:31 PM puts DJTJr in a very positive light. As soon as DJTJr found out that there was no evidence of Clinton illegal activity to be obtained and that he was being lobbied on a policy matter, he terminated the meeting. Of course, NYTimes will no doubt strain to find something nefarious in this (perhaps an anonymous fly on the wall claiming that DJTJr winked when he terminated the meeting, thus indicating that he really was going to try to help the Russkies out).

daddy

Thank you TM and Rich and Scoop for an update on the many lies of Don Jr. Now I am fully up to speed.

BTW,

Arriving home last night Momma showed me a just received letter from the IRS!!! JOM long timers may remember when we had our accounts hacked a few years back and I ranted about that, since we had to change all our accounts and deal with all those Credit Rating companies. It appears that whoever the perp was he opened a Credit Card with some Brit Bank and pretended to be me and ran up his card to whatever their max was.

I knew nothing about any of it except that that Bank or some outfit affiliated with it would try to call us to verify if it was me, and momma told them "no" about a hundred times.

So now it appears that some entity affiliated with whatever happened has submitted some 1099 Form to the IRS for the year 2015 saying the perp who pretended to be me took out $15,000 and the IRS wants me to immediately pay them with a $7,000 check, or start paperwork to go thru the process to prove it was Identity theft and fraud.

So we've dug up the official Police Reports of our Identity theft (Bless Momma for doing that and for keeping the paperwork) and we've got all our 2015 TAX paperwork and whatever else the IRS is saying we have to submit as well, so oh well, looks like we now get to deal with the IRS for who knows how long to prove our innocence.

It'll be interesting to so who's currently more guilty and who will have a tougher time proving his innocence, me or Don Jr.

Porchlight,

Yesterday, since it was such a long flight for me (14 hours Dubai to Seattle, then 3 hours Seattle to Anchorage) and since I had so much champaign, I got mentally exhausted, put down the book I was reading on Darwin The Geologist, (fair to middling') and decided to read Heinlein's "Starship Troopers."

What a fun and decent read. It really appealed to me because of my experience in Boot Camp and the Military. What an excellent vehicle for Naval Officer Heinlein to lay out his philosophy of the role of a responsible citizen in a State, and very in-depth and loaded with examples from world history to buttress his points. I can see now why Instapundit is always raving about the book. I still have 30 pages to go, but will save that for tomorrow when I should be mentally fresh and back on the road again.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

2. For the tech-inclined, download an Opera web browser with built-in free VPN. Somewhat slower (which at home is probably useless) but much safer for travel.

In a moment of paranoia I downloaded Opera. Easy, free, slow, but fine for occasional use.

I am sure the true techies out there can tell us more.

Just for refresher you guys will recall that the hacked entities that had my secure info were:

---US Military Records of 22 million personnel
---Our Health Care records
---All FAA Physical Info was reported as non-secure and easily hackable.
---Target Stores
---Some Credit Card outfit I can't recall, and some other things I'v forgotten.

We also have to produce our Passports to the Hotel check in guys for Xeroxing in every Hotel in China, in India, In Dubai, in Taiwan, and I can't recall where else, so I suppose in the long run it is not surprising that our info gets hacked.

Man Tran

Re Norman Maclean, he was my dad's age and dad grew up over the ridge north of Spokane. In the original book, he included a short story of manning a fire lookout tower down near Hamilton. My dad knew a bunch of kids that volunteered to go fight the fire Norman described. The trick was that the boys had to have their own boots to be selected. None of them did, so there was a line around the corner where one pair of boots got handed to the next candidate so he could pass the test. My dad loved reliving the whole scene that Norman so ably wrote of that era and location.
