"Whistleblower in Vogue";
a headline on the Bing homepage with a thumbnail of some chick on a beach in a red bathing suit.
Clicking on said bait renders not a whistleblower and not a chick, but convicted spy and definite, messed up dude Chelsea Manning.
If only it had been Teen Vogue, xe could have given the teenyboppers the skinny on how great the anal sex in Leavenworth is.

In fact seems to me Chelsea ought to be the poster child for letting mental case trannies into the military. What could go wrong? Everything, maybe?

Ignatz, it's a LIBTARD TWO-FER.
Why in the name of GREAT CAESARS' GHOST, would the MFM have ANY INTEREST in Bradley Manning???? A admitted TRAITOR to The United States of America.

Just going to add a comment here in the service of hastening a new page, per Iggy's 11:54.

All these comments about how Judge Beryl Howell is such a "straight shooter," full of integrity, blah, blah, are essentially identical to comments made about Fitzgerald when he was hired, and about Mueller when he was appointed SC. A very bad sign in my opinion.

GUS

Jimmy, WHO is saying that Beryl Howell is a "straight" shooter??

Follow the STENCH.

jimmyk

GUS, if you can stomach The Daily Beast, we get this:

“Even though she worked for Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, she’s been very straight-arrow as a judge and she wouldn’t be impaneling a jury for the heck of it, or anything less than there being ample justification for it,” said a former federal lobbyist, referring to Howell’s previous work for Sen. Patrick Leahy. “She’s like Mueller: He wouldn’t ask for it unless he had more than enough evidence to justify it, and she wouldn’t have granted it unless he did.”

http://www.thedailybeast.com/the-no-nonsense-judge-who-could-decide-trumps-fate

How many red flags can you count in one paragraph?

jimmyk

And if that's not enough, there's this:

And she has known one of Mueller’s top attorneys since at least the early 1990s.

Howell and Andrew Weissmann have known each other since at least 1991, when they were both assistant U.S. attorneys in the Eastern District of New York, in Brooklyn....

Howell [was] working as a prosecutor in Brooklyn in 1987. Weissmann joined the same office in 1991. And Loretta Lynch, the future attorney general, became a prosecutor there in 1990—working just down the hall from Howell, according to remarks the judge made at a dinner honoring Lynch on May 7, 2016.

Nothing to see here. She's a "straight-arrow"!

WHAT IS THIS INVESTIGATION........INVESTIGATING.
Simply and IN SHORT......ALL of this, is a RESULT of the SWAMP, and more specifically, the LIBTARD MARXIST PARTY, creating a LIE, a NON-SPECIFIC IN ANY WAY.....LIE, that the MFM creamed THEIR LADY JEANS over.
The GOPe has enabled, emboldened, allowed and colluded with this NONSENSE...for a COUPLE of REASONS.
1)Donald Trump is not a MEMBER of the GOPe .......BUSHWOOD.
2)Donald Trump OWES NO LOYALTY nor POWER SHARING, with the GOPe.
The REPUBLICAN PARTY cares about the POWER, the CONTROL of MONIES, and the SELF PRESERVATION of it's POWER BROKERS. The REPUBLICAN PARTY has been COMPLETELY EXPOSED as being more concerned about THEMSELVES being IN POWER, whether MAJORITY or MINORITY, versus, BEING CONSERVATIVES, doing the PEOPLES will.
THE TEA PARTY situation taught me, that the GOPe, is corrupt and disgusting.

I just read the memo of the former Google employee. I have the following reactions:

-Progressive women who are in my family, and are work colleagues and friends of mine, have made many of the points made in the memo. Applying Google's standards, I guess I should disown the family members, fire the work colleagues, and shun the friends.

-Given the trends in much of mainstream corporate life today, the former employee is naive if he thought he could survive at Google after disseminating the memo. The memo expresses what today are thought crimes.

-With respect to the distribution of various skill sets in a specified population, the memo's generalizations hardly break new ground and are anodyne. There is little to no consideration of how skill sets at the individual level relate to specific jobs. In fairness to the former employee, however, he wasn't trying to break new ground in that area. He was in good faith critiquing certain company policies.

GUS

Thomas Collins. You allude to new "rules" that people should be careful not to HANG THEMSELVES by ignoring or breaking. There ARE NO RULES.

Good morning!

I don't know what was in the Wall Street Journal, but Steve Bannon is having none of it:

Stephen K. Bannon‏ @realSKBannon 1m1 minute ago

The @WSJ lies. I support @realDonaldTrump as strongly as ever. And I'm very thankful that #GeneralKelly is here. The best is yet to come.

henry

Miss M, the WSJ has been playing the White House chaos game. Lately blaming Bannon for all ills and leaks. Another group that doesn't understand anything but the same old bureaucracy as retold by their cocktail party acquaintances.

anonamom

MM, sleeping better this week?

I hate discovering (and rediscovering) each Lent the cause of my less-than-restorative sleep by bypassing short chain carbon in my liquid intake.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

henry,

I went and read Conrad Black's article in the National Review this morning. What struck me were the comments. Most criticized Black, calling him a convicted felon and such, calling Trump Cheetoh-man and other stupid insults, and for the life of me looked no different than comments on a lefty site.

The WSJ is rapidly descending into NR territory. It's sad, because I used to count on common sense from their editorial and opinion pages.

None of these people understand that we are going through a major change in American politics. What I have noticed is that I cannot listen to the same platitudes any more. I have no patience for the debating society of the Senate nor their endless investigations in which nothing is accomplished. I am sick of purists who point to some imaginary perfection while real Americans suffer due to their cowardice.

The chaos theme is based on nothing more than the leaks (many of which I believe are fabrications). That the WSJ chooses to promote this theme proves to me that they have chosen sides, and it isn't mine.

jimmyk

The WSJ news reporting has long been pretty lefty, even pre-Murdoch. It's only the editorials (which unlike the NYT are distinct from the reporting) that have been relatively conservative. The op-eds also tended conservative though with a token lib like Al Hunt for the readers to laugh at.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

anonamom,

Yes, sleeping much better. I have substituted Diet Tonic Water and De-Caf Coffee in the evenings.

Mayo missed my neuropathy during an EMG but my Ortho hear found the stenosis by MRI. There can be swelling but that appears to be an after effect of the knee infection and the replacement. Drink lots of water and electrolytic tonics.

MM you're not the only one. As a job stress tonic, I had over time developed the tradition of a double vodka rocks after work. Then wine with dinner. It started putting me out at 8PM which in turn totally hosed up my nighttime sleep.

Dropped the hard stuff 100%, replaced the wine with light beer half the week, and I'm sleeping far better. Suspect my liver likes me better too.

TC, in a sensible world, that ex-Google's letter would be seen as a banal exposition of the obvious. Anyone who doesn't think that male and female brains are differently-wired has spent no time with the opposite sex.

I've been a software developer or herder of software developers since the late '70s. The proportion of women in the field has increased, but only very slightly, in that time. The reason isn't sexism, nor that women can't to it, it's that women don't WANT to. They simply don't enter the field in numbers.

Everybody knows this.

Re: Google guy memo. I read it.
He's pretty much right.
I am surprised he figured it out at 28, as it took me longer--though I had definitely started formulating my take by then.

The differences between my female residents and males were VERY noticeable to me in my mid twenties, when I began supervising. Not saying applicable to every single one in a given gender--definitely overlap---and not saying AT ALL one was better than the other for what we were doing. But the Male--HUNTER, Female--Gatherer was what I quickly shorthanded it too.
Mainly because in cardiac anesthesia, I'd have to not infrequently remind the guys to pay attention to the whole picture (we need to ventilate in order to separate from bypass, not just fixate on this groovy new ultrasound machine picture here), while the girls could tell you why the surgeon was pissed, what the chief resident was worried about, and whether the patient had children in the waiting room...but just might not know what changing the acid-base status did to a given drug metabolism, though they scored in the top tenth of their class, so knew it once, but who really cares about that???
(A fair number of the guys, that's who!)

I could add infinitely more about what happens when people become parents too, after forty years of frontline observation of choices I've seen big numbers of well compensated men and women make, but gotta go.

Quick summary: out of hundreds of women I know, about three work full time post second child if married. Of the men, I've never heard a peep about reducing time to spend more time w kids.

Congressional investigators want to question Trump's secretary in Russia probe

Graff's position in Trump's orbit recently gained attention after Donald Trump Jr. released a June 2016 email exchange with British publicist Rob Goldstone leading up to the meeting with Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya at Trump Tower.

“I can also send this info to your father via Rhona," Goldstone wrote Donald Jr. in the email, "but it is ultra sensitive so wanted to send to you first.”

Graff was not on the email chain and it's unclear if Goldstone ever made direct contact with her.

“Since her name is in the email, people will want her to answer questions,” said Rep. Peter King, R-New York, a member of the House Intelligence Committee who knows Graff. “If you go into Trump Tower, you’re going to mention her name.”

The president, who has said he does not use email, communicated with associates for years through Graff. "Everybody knows in order to get through to him they have to go through me, so they are always on their best behavior,” Graff told Real Estate Weekly in 2004.

According to sources familiar with Trump's habits, Graff would often receive emails on his behalf and print them out for his review. If Trump felt the need to respond he would write on the print out -- typically with a Sharpie pen -- and hand it back to Graff so should could scan the message and send it on electronically.

Asked if he would seek an interview with Graff or examine her records, the top Senate Republican leading the Russia probe did not rule it out. “The Committee has cast and will continue to cast a wide net,” Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., told ABC News.

I was asked yesterday about what my problem is with Trump. It's many things, and I am not going to troll the blog with it. But a pretty good illustration is in this old link from CNN, compiling all of Trump's statements on Putin.

http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2017/03/politics/trump-putin-russia-timeline/

One things one sees is that Trump's statements tend to be all over the map. The other is that, frankly, the things he likes about Putin are the things that make him a dictator, and the things that he minimizes or denies about Putin are the things that make him a murderer.

One of the reasons I don't think Trump "colluded" with Russia, or is subject to blackmail by Russia, is that Trump likes and respects Putin without any encouragement.

sbw

On can respect Putin for what he has done the same way one is obliged to respect the skills of a fighter.

One who does not respect the skills of an opponent suffers from hubris.

One who cannot parse different kinds of respect is susceptible to mistakes of over-simplification.

I must conclude that Appalled thinks Obama was tougher, because thinking Putin is tougher, is "a bad thing" - at least it is "a bad thing" if your name is Trump.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Appalled,

I honestly do not understand what sinister things you see in that series of quotes.

To summarize:

1. He got along well with Putin at the Miss Universe pageant.
2. Putin was smarter and tougher than Obama.
3. Putin is trying to rebuild the Russian Empire.
4. Mitt Romney was right about Russia.
5. It would be good if they could get along.
6. If murders of reporters happened it was terrible. Is there proof? Names?

Nope. Not gonna get upset by those comments, and the fact that you do indicates the usual looking for anything to trash Trump.

Why would Putin have wanted someone whose very campaign platform called for eradicating ISIS and killing off some of Assad's troops, increasing energy production here to Russia's detriment, and exporting coal to places like Ukraine?

Trump doesn't like Putin, as much as he respects him for being smarter than the average leader. Putin IS smart, or he wouldn't be at the top of the heap in Russia.

James D.

From Ext's link @ 8:40

Judge Howell belittled plaintiff’s counsel as a Jacksonville, Florida attorney who does not understand the “highly educated, experienced, professional people [of] Washington, D.C.” According to the Daily Caller, Schultz’s lawyers acknowledged that Howell’s comments were “stern” (very probably a euphemism) but not grounds for reversal.

In a sane world, that single comment would be sufficient grounds for impeaching Judge Howell from the federal bench.

I've never met a man who had a lot of 'bitch' in him who wasn't a viper, backstabber, and dangerous. Much more so than a rugged, straight-forward and straight-talking leader. (sort of like the 'guys' on jom) :)

Old Lurker

Anonamom "When Ig asked OL about the recent "snark," my first thought was--he's on the island. No reason to not have a beer with lunch! Margaritas on the beach! Alcohol certainly lets my snark rise almost unfettered."

NOT GUILTY!

In spite of my constant jokes regarding my beloved G&Ts, my routine has not altered in years. I have one tall G&T at 6pm, followed most nights by another half. If I am at a party and feel the need for #3, it is always just tonic. I don't drink wine, and I never drink during the day, and that routine does not change when we are on Nantucket.

Actually, my increased "snotty snark" lately is caused by exactly what I said to Iggy and to Porch. And that is exacerbated by being on Nantucket this year, but not because of the booze. In my first "Trump Summer" here, I find myself surrounded by "peers" I have known for decades and who, like me, are blessed to be living the good life. My depression is from realizing how unanimously they all, failing to grasp how their good lives came to be (unlike many of them, I did build my life with my own hands), ALL hate Trump and everything he stands for. Their unbridled glee in believing they have stopped his agenda after only six months and their guy Mueller will fire the bullet to his brain in due course just pushes all of my buttons, 24x7 and it wears me out.

Then when I come to JOM for comfort, every once in awhile I sense that reliable JOM soul mates even here are straying from my certain knowledge that indeed the sky is falling, that not enough people appreciate that and fear where that leads, and that we are all surrounded by most of our fellow citizens, especially here on Nantucket who think "God will provide, because God always provides...(thanks to Grandaddy's Trust Fund)".

I got particularly snotty the other night because the concept of Civil Forfeiture by out of control storm troopers, where the storm troopers get to keep what they find, seems to me to be a perfect paradigm example of all things bad about a run away state trampling on its people. Especially during summers here, I read so much history that I am certain this movie has been lived by generation after generation going back through Biblical times, and there is no reason whatsoever that if we travel down that road, it will end as it always does, and sooner than people realize.

So when MM expresses faith that Trump has a plan, when Porch reminds me that General Patton would not be a general in today's world and that fixes cannot happen in DC as fast as they must, when Clarice who knows more about DC than I will ever, opines that this time the SP will be OK because Rosenstein is overseeing him, when even Iggy, one the best read of my friends and from whom I learn so much, says that SCOTUS blesses Civil Forfeiture so what are you gonna do, and then, the cherry on the Sundae, Maryrose chimes in that "Civil Forteiture is OK and all we have to do to make the world perfect is to make the cops take the assets they loot and give them to the poor...", well it just blows through my filters sometimes.

And that has been happening lately, and I see that. I am reminded of learning, when my MIL was dying, that she was particularly cruel to my wife. But we came to learn that in times of extreme stress like that, dying people often focus all their fears on the ones they love the most, and that dying mothers do that to daughters all the time. Sometimes I feel like a dying mother and treat you all as my favorite daughters.

How is that for a long winded explanation of my Chicken Little attitude of late?

Most 'alpha' women tend to be logical, critical thinkers
And where do we know women like this? Hmmm.

Jack is Back!

Typical of Appalled to deflect the actual question: What has Trump done (actions) that you disagree with?

Quoting CNN and not noting that Obama (tell Vlad, I'll have more flexibility) and Hillary/Bill did more collusion with Putin than anything Trump has ever done or intended in his remarks, is disingenuous.

So, he has said something positive about a world leader. Big deal. Show me how diplomatic courtesy is collusion. What should he do? Spit on his shoes when he meets him.

You have shown that you are more intellectually dishonest than I even took you for. Name one policy or decision or EO or legislative initiative of Trump's you disagree with or get off your "high and mighty" horse.

Buckeye

Appalled, you seemingly refuse to see the obvious.

We didn't send Trump to DC because he is temperate, contemplative, brilliant or eloquent.

We sent him to DC to make people's heads explode and kick ass.

It could be worse, we could be erecting guillotines and throwing tiles off the roof.

Sue

Maybe Trump should just bow to Putin. That is acceptable behavior in a POTUS, right?

Sue

It could indeed be worse. HIllary could be POTUS. ::shudder::

It could be worse, we could be erecting guillotines and throwing tiles off the roof.

Not sure I'd call that "worse" at this point.

Stephanie:

Oh, what a load of...pussy hats.

Many of you mistake whining for tough talk and tough actions. I don't dispute Putin's toughness, but I do dispute Trump's. Tough guy -- fires Sessions, has replacement ready to go. Beta Male -- whines about him on twitter. Tough guy -- defends his country's embassy. Beta male -- praises Putin for giving him the downsizing opportunity. (Or -- to keep this bipartisan, let's his embassy personnel go deaf).

Part of manliness and toughness is loyalty to your people. Trump has none. He plays passive aggressive games with his staff (I'm sure Bannon and Priebus have enjoyed the multiple knives in their back), and dispatches without remorse the people who have helped him the most. That kind of thing strikes me as the opposite of what being a man is.

Yep, Trump talks tough. Might even work with North Korea, because he is unpredictable, and that might Kim some pause. But really tough, really manly? I call BS.

Captain Hate

SCOTUS blesses Civil Forfeiture so what are you gonna do

Assuming we're correct about there being an afterlife, when I leave this world I'm hoping my destination isn't overseen by black robed fallen angels.

Looks like Russia is blinking on the Norks. China already said Trump has a free hand if Kim fires first. This is new and different. (Note: I do not expect the proposed conditions on US / S Korea actions to survive negotiations).

WaPo Transcript of Trump Aug 10 Press Q&A

Buckeye

If North Korea sent missiles toward Guam or the US, could the US missile defense system shoot them down? Should it?

We should do it regardless of where he points them.

Should have started doing it a long time ago.

Every launch allows them to learn something that helps perfect their junk.

Ralph L

I'm surprised NR ran that Conrad Black piece someone linked yesterday. Their management might be divided.

Buckeye

Not sure I'd call that "worse" at this point.

Starting to move toward the "necessary" column:)

Guam is the US

Exactly, henry! The AP's twitter writer is being schooled on several points this morning...

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Appalled,

The comment about the laid-off staff (who by the way, contain quite a few Russian nationals) was a JOKE! Jeeminy Christmas!

Priebus was fired for a number of reasons, including being one of the sources of the leaks. Bannon is still there and hasn't been fired. McMaster, despite an unrelenting series of attacks from the alt-right, got an endorsement from the President yesterday.

I think anonamom, Steph and I are better able to judge whether he is manly that you are. You are still in denial that a guy from outside the hallowed GOP elite group beat you all at your game. You hate how he talks, hate how he thinks, hate everything about him, because you will NEVER come close. LOL!

Threadkiller

But really tough, really manly? I call BS.

Most betas would.

JIB:

What has Trump done that I disagree with? Fair question -- the one I would give back to you is what has he really done? My main problem with him is that I think he is ineffective. He has not made a start on draining the swamp. He did not act to get his people in place. He has not fought for his priorities, unless his priorities are sniping at the press.

I don't support what he did on healthcare. He supported a lousy bill because it was "something" and has done zero to move the conversation. Not sure what he intends on tax reform, or if he intends to have tax reform. That's a continuation of the nothing. And infrastructure -- where's the pre-work that goes into getting a bill passed?

I know never-Trumpers get a lot of grief, because they are complaining about style. But with such a lack of accomplishment, what is there really to talk about? (Well, civil forfeiture. Old Lurker, You probably aren't reading this, but I agree with you on that)

And, of course, there is the hypocrisy -- doing the things he blasted Obama for. And there are the regular untruths -- the giant crowds, the call from the Boy Scouts that didn't happen, the first act as President being toughening up the nukes, the statement he's done more than any other President in the beginning of his administration.

Trump has been successful on immigration -- at least in cutting it back. It would take an idiot not to be successful, and I doin't believe Trump is stupid -- enforcing the law as written amounts to a major change in policy.

I don't agree with his protectionism, but he has taken the steps he needed to do. I could care less about the Paris agreement. North Korea is a work in progress, and one where I can see him being successful. (Sometimes, the capacity to scare people is useful. See Reagan)

That's enough for now. I have reached troll length, have achieved troll rancor, and risk running the troll's fate. Just remember that you, rhetorically or not, asked for this.

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

Appalled,

Negotiators get along with people. Try and strike a good deal with someone who hates you. Whatever deal you get to, will take twice as long and be half as good as it could be if you get along with your opponent.

I learned a zillion years ago that the first thing you do with an adversary is find something in common, and something you can laugh about.

I have no idea is Trump is the negotiator he brags about, but IMO he's got the right approach.

If you were Putin and actually wanted a deal, would you rather sit down with Trump or someone who spends all his time calling you the devil.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--I was asked yesterday about what my problem is with Trump.--

Two observations;
1. All of Appalled's problems with Trump were over what he says.
2. What bright boy, or girl, asked the new and "improved" Appalled his opinion?

NEW THREAD, POSSUMS.

Tom Maguire

Should the US shoot down missiles aimed at (or near) Guam?

That AP piece is not as dumb as it tweets.

They are talking about test flights, not armed missiles.

Yes, shooting down the missiles denies important test info to the NoKoreans. BUT... what if we fail?

But it’s highly questionable whether either or both [systems] would be able to take down the full salvo of four North Korean missiles. President Donald Trump hinted the defense system still needs beefing up on Thursday when he told reporters the U.S. will be spending billions more on them.

A failed intercept would likely embolden the North to move ahead even faster. It could also have a chilling psychological impact on allies like Japan and South Korea, which might seek to build up their own nuclear forces independently of Washington. Rival powers China and Russia, meanwhile, might see the exposed weakness as an opportunity to push forward more assertive policies of their own.

I do like the idea of testing our defenses but not if the test risks a dramatic fail.

Too bad the Resistance has tied the Admin's hands with Russia sanctions. Might be a good time to negotiate with them.

I'd kinda like to know if we are gonna have a dramatic fail so we can not have them in the future when there are warheads aboard.

He has not made a start on draining the swamp.

Yesterday you defended congress's business as usual.

Talk about all over the place.

TK:

I think of "the swamp" subject to Trump draining as the bureaucracy, not Congress. Trump can't impeach Congress, as much as he would like to.

Threadkiller

So cutting back on onerous regulations counts as swamp draining?

Appalled

TK:

A lot of regulations are meaningless paper that are long obsolete but still in the CFR. It's not that hard a reform to compley with, and isn't that big a change in the way business is done. I'm sure Low Energy Jeb would have done the same thing, to universal yawns.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Weren't those 700+ useless "diplomats" you feel so sorry for bureaucrats along with their poor demoralized coworkers Trump was so mean to?

You're not even coherent anymore?
