As long as there is a restroom between the lockers and the field, The Deflator will do his part.

Neo

From TNR:
But climate change advocates who don’t live a carbon-neutral lifestyle aren’t hypocrites because, for the most part, they’re not asking you to live a carbon-neutral lifestyle. They’re asking governments, utilities, energy companies, and large corporations to increase their use of renewable energy so that you can continue to live your life as you please, without contributing to global warming.

daddy

CBS HEADLINE: DOW "FLIRTS" WITH 20,000

So who are you guys placing your bets on, the DOW, or Wilt Chamberlain?

James D.

From TNR

Well, that right there is the first indication you're reading something dishonest and/or incoherent.

you can continue to live your life as you please, without contributing to global warming

Not if living your life as you please includes things like eating meat, owing a pet or having children, apparently, to judge by recent proclamations of climate change advocates. So there's the dishonest part.

They’re asking governments, utilities, energy companies, and large corporations to increase their use of renewable energy

Well, they're trying to require that governments, utilities, energy companies and corporations do so, they're not really "asking." And of course raising the price of everything, and reducing the availability and reliability of energy hardly seems conducive to living one's life as one pleases, so I suppose that's got the incoherent category, with a side dish of mendacity, covered, too.

James D.

Off?

daddy

The day will come when Tom Brady can't get it done. But will that day arrive this season?

No. He's not a New York Yankee.

Jack is Back!

I hate to say this but I am old enough to have watched Norm Van Brocklin, Y.A.Tittle and Johnny Unitas as well as Otto Graham. I am a Redskin's fan and remember watching Sonny Jurgensen rifling bullets over the middle.

But I haven't watched a QB with the mental toughness and understanding of the game like Brady and that includes Montana. As a team sport none has proved that more than a Belichick Patriots team with Brady at QB. You can hate them, call them cheaters but games are decided on the line both directions and no one has ever prepared his OL and DL like Brownie Bill which has made Brady Super Tom.

I will take all the disagreements but you better have QB's with more Super Bowl rings and smarter than Bradshaw:)

TNR: "They’re asking governments, utilities, energy companies, and large corporations to increase their use of renewable energy"

We all wind up paying when business or govt make inefficient choices.
This is no exception, far from it.

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

Henry, (from the last thread)

"Jane, you may be discounting the extent the conservative pundits play in the DC "who I know" game. They would not be thrilled with the demonization of DC-- they are DC."

Well that's interesting, but you would think the conservative ones would be sucking up to retain their spot.

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

I love love love Brady but I think the magic is Bellicheck (even if I can't spell his name).

Marlene

Jane, our daughter was here last month and she rolled her eyes when we told her the name of the neighbor's dog. The neighbor at the end of the road has a chocolate lab named Ruger. When the daughter puts on her DC bubble attitude,we give it right back. We remind her that she grew up in rural Maine and she'd better not forget it! Don't pull that DC knows better sh*t on us!

Jack is Back!

Jane,

MissM on the prev thread: "My personal opinion is that Trump is the ONLY candidate who had both the unusual skill set needed to win but also the only one who could re-imagine governing and foreign relations and perhaps change things for the better."

Implied but not stated explicitly is Trump's reality TV stint. For many, after watching him weekly how could they accept that Trump was a demon in human form? MSM might succeed against Romney with those attacks, but Trump was inoculated.

Thomas Collins

Whoops! I cannot tell a lie on this thread. So here I become a piñata for the pro-Brady and anti-Brady crowd.

-It is highly unlikely that Brady has stretched the rules any more than most QBs including top notch ones (a nod to Aaron Rodgers' honesty for admitting he tries to have his balls inflated above permissible levels).

-There will be a significant decline in Brady's performance this year. It won't be old man type decline, and the Patriots may get back to the AFC Championship Game and may win that game and the Super Bowl. But this will be the year we see Brady on the downslope.

Marlene

Jane,Ruger is a gun. We're returning the first week of November. Hubby is having toric lens implants in both eyes, one in September, one in October. Getting old ain't for sissies. Wish me luck,I'm on a walking boot with help from a cane. I took a practice walk before sitting down for a glass of wine. :) Hubby is returning the scooter to the medical supply rental tomorrow. I loved that scooter, I've been using it for two months. I named it "Scooter",but I didn't crash it. :)

Captain Hate

If I could shoot Belichick up with sodium pentathol I'd ask him how big of an asshole was Art Modell and was his experience under a terrible owner the major reason he turned down the Jets head coaching job.

Thomas Collins

Here's an interesting 538 piece that makes a solid argument that Brady is far more than a Belichick system QB. Comparing Belichick with and without Brady is one of the aspects of the analysis.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/brady-vs-belichick-whos-to-blame-for-the-patriots-insufferable-success/

Thomas Collins

CH, I never thought about it that way. I thought Belichick thought he was more likely to get out from under Parcells' shadow by going to the Pats. But preferring the ownership of Kraft seems a more likely possibility, especially in light of the Modell experience.

Bellichick didn't do much for the Cleveland Browns.

I see Appalled made a visit to clutch pearls about Trump's hypocrisy over golf games.

I am certain that this is why everyone in the Never Trump camp hated Trump over a year and a half ago.

Of course, they had no record of his golfing during the presidency to accuse him about THEN, but whatever.

Perhaps someone would like to discuss other notable instances of hypocrisy within the GOP. I can provide quite a long list, but I will just point to Jeb Bush making a bunch of money on his "concern" about education, and Ted Cruz acting like a Christian while slandering Ben Carson.

But GOLF! And Appalled just KNEW how much golf he would play in advance! I tell you, those National Review people were psychic!

Jack is Back!

I have a friend who is a member at Bedminster. He has played with Trump a number of times in member-member tournaments there. Trump is a legitimate scratch golfer. Not bad for the most unathletic POTUS since Taft (who was alos a good golfer:).

Anyone who has played golf for years and watches it on TV or in person will agree Trump has a very good swing for a guy his age. The best senior golfer in our club is a 3 time US Senior Open qualifier and a former member of the FSU Golf team (lots of tour pros cam out of that team). He shoots in the mid 60's a lot and he is over 70. Our course is a US Open Qualifier course.

He tells me that Trump has game and he would not want to play for money. My other friend at Bedminister says never play him for money. He is a devastating putter, which most good golfers are. The weakness of those on the cusp is putting.

I think Feherty, instead of interviewing all the rainbow snowflakes like Matt Lauer ought to seek out The Donald and see if he can keep up.

Rush and a caller were discussing the move by all Republicans to deny Trump any Recess Appointments. Posted by: Extraneus | August 07, 2017 at 05:28 PM

Extraneus, it is practically a certainty the Sessions "dispute" is completely contrived.

Completely.

The contrived play was designed to get the Democrats publicly defending Sessions. Mission Accomplshed. Look out, Democrats.

Also, the odds are the 2nd special counsel thing is not going to happen *because* that is Mueller's secret, primary purpose agreed to in that bogus interview to be FBI Director.

Perhaps Mueller has something of a designed-for-show-only charge against Manafort or the contrived Turkey stuff with General Flynn. All of it inconsequential.

But the Obama Administration folks are the target. Think of Rod Rosenstein -- notice Turley's call today for his recusal? Me thinks some of the more sane Democrats are beginning to figure out the hand that's being played and it is definitely not good for the Democrats. Because it's a hand they are completely unfamiliar with and completely unprepared for. And, most importantly, it will all play out straight into the 2018 election cycle.

When I get really, really fantastical (more than is already evident, that is) and greedy in my continuing giddiness over the election of Trump I allow myself to think this Senate denial of recess appointment . . . man, that is all part of the script, too.

It demonstrates Congressional independence. It demonstrates an arm of Congress getting back to doing its job and protecting some of its constitutionally-permitted prerogatives.

I said months ago one of the things we needed to do was SHAME THE DEMOCRATS by doing these legislation matters properly. Exercise executive branch and congressional branch powers properly. The way the system was designed.

Wouldn't that be something?

Elements of the Trump crowd said they were going to take down the media establishment during his administration and I'm beginning to believe them.

daddy

Anyone else sensing that Manchin is getting ready to flip to the 'Pubbies?

Porch,

I recall reading somewhere a while back that Murkowski is a close friend of Manchin and has spent a lot of weekends on his boat. I'm not insinuating anything sexual at all, but I am not excited about someone flopping over to our side cosmetically who is going to continue to vote the way Murkoswki and Schumer want him too. We've already got enough Rino's, so why take on another? Another RINO pushing a Progressive agenda just gives more cover to other RINO's to push their progressive agendas, and makes it harder for a true principled Conservative to rally honest Repub support and change the direction of the swamp. So for that reason I'd prefer that Manchen stay a DEM and we defeat him straight up and keep rolling.

DrJ

RG,

Do you happen to know Okenwa Okoli? He's an Engineering Prof at Florida A&M. I worked with him at NSF -- nice guy. African, so he's not particularly PC, at least for an academic.

daddy

Dave, I had no idea you were employed at FOX News.

Porchlight

Right ho, RG. Good catch on Turley/Rosenstein.

BTW, Gorka is rumored to be the fabled WH anon.

Porchlight

So for that reason I'd prefer that Manchen stay a DEM and we defeat him straight up and keep rolling.

daddy,

If that's possible, I agree it's the best option.

But I think Manchin may find it more practical to switch, and if the GOPe plays that wrong and angers too many WV Republicans, we could lose the seat to a much worse Dem.

daddy

Is Brady flirting with 22,000?

I don't know but as usual TM's Yankee's struck out.

Jeter’s official tally currently sits at 19,998

Jane (Stand against the Coup)

"BTW, Gorka is rumored to be the fabled WH anon."

What does that mean Porch?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I am glad others looked at that video. Sessions and Trump go back at least to that time in 2005, when Trump testified.

I pay attention to little things like that.

For example, did anyone notice that when King Abdullah was here he made a comment in the press conference about "remembering fondly all the conversations they had had in the past?" This was the king's FIRST trip after Trump's Inauguration.

So he has known King Abdullah for some time. Maybe as long as he has known Sessions.

RG, Porchlight and I are on the same wave length. You know, if we turn out to have been right, we get to dance around making nyah-nyah noises to all of you. LOL!

Porchlight

Jane, I and others posted a lot about this last month. On June 30th a guy posted on 4chan/pol claiming to be someone in the WH. Said that big things were going to start happening on July 27th. Hinted at investigations/prosecutions of deep state and even Obama admin people.

WH anon popped up a few more times in the intervening weeks with similar messages telling people to wait until the 27th. Talked about the Slingshot Effect, where basically you use the enemy's strength against them.

The Awan arrest story broke on the 26th, and continued to blow up on the 27th. Also on the 27th a whole bunch of other stuff dropped, such as: Browder testimony that Fusion GPS was paid by the Russians, Scaramucci fingered Priebus as a leaker, announcement that Comey's buddy James A Baker was under investigation for leaking, House resolution to go after assorted Dem villains, and possibly more I'm not remembering.

The cherry on top for me was that for the first time since almost the inauguration, not a single question on Russia was asked at the WH press briefing.

Gorka signs off with "Cheers!" a lot, and so did/does WH anon.

Thomas Collins

Extraneus - Murkowski was just the bag man. The deals are worked out behind the scenes, phone calls between staffers and what not. She drew the straw to come out and close the senate for the night, and read the script she was given.

Just saying, the pro forma sessions weren't an idea she was pushing. She was just the designated actor for reading those lines.

JimNorCal

"Awan extinction event", beautiful phrase! Let's hope ...

cboldt

Rosenstein already recused from Trump campaign cases, more or less, see Mueller.

I think the Mueller/Trump meeting was Trump's chance to size up Mueller and veto his selection as SC. No way would he "offer a deal," seeing as how bonkers Comey was able to go on "Flynn is a good guy."

If a SC takes up some or all of the cases suggested by House Judiciary, Rosenstein will be recused from those, too.

As for Congress being responsible, and doing a bit of "institutional protection," I'll believe it when I see it. Even on the "all Congress" Russia sanctions, blame is put on Trump. Amazing.

daddy

Lou Dobbs doing a segment on Loretta Lynch and her devious alias E-Mails to secretly discuss the "Talk smack on the Tarmac."

I appreciate Appalled's measured and non ranting criticism. To some extent I would push back, re: golf and vacations. With Pres Obama it felt like a pattern of dereliction towards America's interests. Also too flamboyant for someone who claimed to be a principled community organizer. With Trump, it's a one-off event. He appears to work hard and to be faithful to the American people.

But frankly, any inconsistency doesn't bother me much. I don't worship Pres Trump. If I learned that Our Lord Jesus slurped his soup I'd be a bit off put. It wouldn't bother me a bit for Gen Eisenhower, I just want him to win the war.

Saw this comment today, endorse it completely!
"I hired Trump to be a wrecking ball and so far not a bad showing. He’s gotten twice as much as the last GOPer inhabitant of the WH."

boatbuilder

TC you are the Lindsey Graham of Pats fans. :-)

That stupid Brady on the decline article is yet another example of the torture and manipulation of statistics to obtain a confession to whatever you need to get. Yeah, Brady had a crappy game in THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP in 2015 (borrowing from Gus) in very crappy weather against a Broncos defense that beat the crap out of him, and then went on to win the Super Bowl by beating the crap out of Cam Newton; but he was hardly on the decline--except as compared to last year, when he had a season for the ages at age 39. And if you show a whole lot of graphs that start at 65 and go to 80 you can make a change from 68 to 72 look Yuuuuge.

The man is the GOAT and all you haters are stuck with it, and have to watch him continue until he decides he's tired of it or Giselle makes him quit.

The important question is--when Brady does retire or---God forbid--get hurt and the Pats win another one with Garrapalo, will that make you people happy or angry?

Turley's call for Rosenstein recusal from Mueller oversight is crap on top of crap assumptions. One of those is that Mueller took up obstruction vs. Trump, creating a conflict. Why would Mueller create a conflict and kick himself out of this cushy gig?

What Turley is either assuming or trying to set up is unfettered-Mueller, rather than jurisdiction-restrained-Mueller. I recall a couple of those radical communist senators urging Mueller be given the same sort of carte blanche that Comey gave Fitzgerald (totally outside of the SC regulations), and getting push-back.

I do agree that if Mueller comes back with an accusation that is outside of the election campaign, it will be a black eye on him, and on Rosenstein for failing to communicate or enforce the limited jurisdiction that Rosenstein had to delegate, that being limited to the material that Sessions was or would be recused from.

boatbuilder

RG, Porch, MM--I so, so, so hope you are right. So much of what happens in DC these days makes no sense to me at all.

What bothers me is that while Porch and MM are generally absolutely correct about everything, the one thing they have been dead wrong about was...Tom Brady. ;-)

SusieOH

This is a long post – please SOB if you are so inclined. I don’t comment here much, but I do lurk.

About five years ago, I read on some comment thread (maybe here, or AOS, or somewhere else) that our current political situation is what political party realignments look like. The Democrats have pretty much marginalized themselves. They are now the party of grievance. It’s easy to see with all the general bat sh*t craziness, and wonder of all wonders – Chuck Schumer seems to realize they have gone too far and is trying to pull them back. In 10 years, I think voting for Democrats will be like voting for the Green Party.

So, I started thinking about this – I am 59 years old and the Democrats were not the crazy party 45 or so years ago. Tip O’Neill was not a crazy man. Even during Clinton’s presidency there were sane, middle of the road, conservative democrats; his whole thing was winning back the Regan Democrats. I think after Clinton things started changing. Perhaps it had to do with his serial cheating. Even though the Democrats protected him and made excuses for him, it had to leave a bad taste in their mouths. Pun intended.

After that you started seeing more people on all levels – state, local and federal – running as Republicans. I live in central Ohio – small town and conservative – and it’s hard for Democrats to get elected now. (Although we’ve had a Republican mayor whose wife was convicted of embezzlement, so we’ll see what happens next election!).

There are a lot of elected Republicans who are not really Republicans. They just run that way to get elected. They don’t hang together for votes on big things – there are too many of them who don’t agree about the little things, let alone repeal of Obamacare. Throw into this mix the Never Trumpers. I don’t understand their thinking, but then they don’t understand mine, so WTH. Trump was not my first choice. Or my second. But, I was NEVER going to vote for Hilary Clinton. Once he was the nominee I was on the Trump Train. And, as far as I am concerned, he is doing fine.

This is a long way of getting around to saying that I don't think the never Trumpers can force Trump out, but they are going to force a split in the Republican party. We will have a smaller group with the never Trump ideals (whatever those are) and a larger group including people who are old fashioned conservative Democrats. And, I don’t think this will resolve itself quickly.

Hold on to your seats!

Jack is Back!

cboldt,

Do you in all honesty, not as a legal scholar, believe Mueller, et. al. will come out of this charade with anything other than something that looks like an inidictment against the Trump procession of characters?

Jesus, Clarice.

You have special security? No walk abouts at night?

Be careful.

cboldt

Whatever Mueller comes up with, if he follows the regulations, it gets filtered by Rosenstein.

I don't know what you mean by "looks like an indictment," but if we use Libby as a parallel, yeah, I expect Mueller to come back with a scalp. It won't be related to the campaign though; and Trump's lawyers and PR team are going to have a field day with it.

I'm concerned that Mueller is casting his net too wide, but none of the pres reports on that, other than inference from a 16-DEM team, are credible. I doubt Mueller is looking at 8 year old real estate transactions.

boatbuilder

Well said, SusieOH.

cboldt

The only SC who came back with a clean bill was Danforth, who was hired to whitewash FBI conduct in the Waco confrontation and conflagration. He did what he was hired to do.

boatbuilder

I never believed the Libby stuff would go anywhere, or that even a DC jury would unanimously convict on the basis of such a flimsy piece of BS--but it did and they did.

So I worry.
