Captain Hate on the iPhone

I hated being forced to vote for both those worthless turds. Not happening again, GOP.

Appalled

TM:

I mourn the days when people were allowed to think before responding to a situation. Because this situation sorely needed that. But now we have twitter, which is an integral part of Satan's plan for America.

A few notes.

1. You can't ignore the outside agitator factor in the Charlottesville situation. Kessler was a homegrown loon, but the tiki torch mob was imported from other places. I don't think it is reasonable to say that any person who joined that group could be under any illusion about who these people were. So the "good people" argument, in this specific case, seems bogus. Many good people oppose the removal of the statues in Charlottesville. I don't believe for a second any of them were on the streets with the #UnitetheRight.

2. Antifa can read the internet like the rest of us. They certain came to Charlottesville to commit mayhem. I think the alt-right intentionally offered them an invitation. Yes. As bad as alt-right, and they now will take the opportunity to repeat themselves all over the South. So, they will go the route of infamy of Occupy and BLM, despite Trump.

3. Are they really calling that car thing terrorism? It does not seem premeditated to me. Just evil.

lyle

Can SMOD be summoned for only the extinction of a sadly not insignificant percentage of the GOPe?

I don't think it is reasonable to say that any person who joined that group could be under any illusion about who these people were. So the "good people" argument, in this specific case, seems bogus.

Trump's "good people on both sides" was jaw-dropping.

But the media, and GOP establishment absolution of *everyone* on the other side is disturbing too.

TM:

Good to see you in the comments. Reminds me of the pre-Plame days.

The media is blind to violent tendencies on the left. It's kind of fun to read my local paper, which is maintaining a stance of "oh no, horror" with respect to the vandalism on a local statue, and covering the remaining incidents with the bias you'd expect.

henry

daddy, always was if you watched the news

lyle

Whaddayamean "now," daddy?

Captain Hate

I still think Kessler conned some people of conscience into thinking it was a protest against the destruction of historical monuments with insufficient input from all parties and they got there among plants and dickweeds and thought WTF. Just because Appalled thinks that's impossible doesn't bother me one iota. Word will get out through new media if that happened because the MFM won't support it.

If I'm wrong so be it; but I'm not the one slandering a group of people of which we only know one name and that's of somebody formerly supportive of the JEF.

Don't click unless you like auto-play video. Here's the key bit:

Dallas’ Perot Museum of Nature and Science has scheduled a party for the upcoming, very rare solar eclipse set to cross the country Aug. 21. One mom’s comment on the Facebook post for the event, however, drew almost as much attention as the expected phenomenon itself. Although the comment has since been deleted, the Houston Chronicle reports that one woman asked, ‘Most kids go back to school that day. Can it be done on the weekend?’”

So...what month is it in Australia right now?

Ralph L

From the PJM link about new CSA protests:
the Confederate Monument in Lynchburg, Va., the Mecklenburg Confederate Soldier in Boydton, Va.
I don't know about the others, but if these become public locally, they'll have a spontaneous fight on their hands, which may be their intent. They'd get it in my county too.

boatbuilder

Bravo, TM.

A question on the whole "good people" issue. Was "Unite the Right" the only event or group opposing the removal of the Lee statue, or were there others? I believe Trump was referring to those who may in good faith oppose the removal of the statue on the grounds that Lee might possibly be deserving of some degree of honor (perhaps by virtue of watching "The Civil War" on PBS or maybe having read some non-propaganda history), but I am willing to be educated on this.

Ralph L

Since the dims have already lost most of the non-left Southern white vote even in local elections, they've got nothing left to lose, and a good way to stir up the black vote without black candidates.

Now McCain and Romney, widely hailed as honorable gentlemen, are echoing racially-themed attacks on Trump.

Two identity politics clowns. They both lost to Obama and traded a secure ballot for bolstering the notion that Republicans are inherently racist [see The Consent Decree], and have been since 1984.

Trump fought The Consent Decree, allowed for a secure ballot where he could, and surprise surprise, he won.

Many of you may have heard about the big gathering in Boston on Saturday. I'll be there to protest one of the groups that will be participating. lyle

derwill, yet another adorable, irredeemable deplorable

I could be wrong, but I'm getting a strong feeling that the only thing keeping the Republican Party viable is Trump. He won the White House not just in spite of the Party, but with most of leadership in the Party in active opposition against him. And there is no doubt in my mind that Hillary would have beaten their chosen candidate Jeb in a landslide, and possibly even turned at least the Senate blue. Many of the GOPe kept their seats only because Trump voters also voted for them in the mistaken belief that a Republican Party in control of Congress would finally fulfill their campaign promises with a Republican in the WH. Ironically, if the GOP retains their majority in 2018, it will only be because the Dems will be vociferously campaigning on impeachment and middle America doesn't like that kind of ugly, revenge politics.

Once Trump is gone--either in 2020 or 2024, or if the party goes completely insane and joins with Dems to impeach and convict him before then--then the GOPe is going to be shocked to discover a party comprised of Mormons and pampered east-coast NeverTrumpers will be joining the Whigs as an answer to a Jeopardy trivia question in 2028.

Oh no, EPA employees still crying at their desks. The EPA must be some Confederate Monument to cause all this distress. We should permanently remove it.

cboldt

lyle - the "copycat" theme was advanced by CNN's Terrorism Analyst Peter Bergen sometime between noon and 12:30.

This is the 14th vehicle attack, terrorist attack, we've seen in the west since 2014. Most of them have been jihadist terrorist attacks. But, obviously, you had the Charlottesville attack by a right-wing extremist just in the past week. We also the attack in London with a car outside of a mosque ramming a group of Muslims who were celebrating Ramadan, killing one. So, you know, terrorists learn from other terrorist incidents. It's a bit like school shooting where there are copycats and this mode of terrorist attack is becoming increasingly frequent.

daddy

13 dead, 50+ injured in Barcelona.

Yep, "copycat" of Charlottesville, Wolf.

Odd how every Muslim terrorist in the world is a "Lone Wolf" except for the guy in Barcelona---He's a "copycat " of Charlottesville."

Wonder how many times the Barcelona van was struck with baseball bats, and I can't wait to read Tapper's comments about the Barcelona victims punching out reporters for taking pics. I'm sure that'll be happening any minute now, Wolf...any minute now.

From here on out all history will begin with "Charlottesville." At least all History as presented by CNN. Charlottesville will be the new template, the new baseline, against which all future actions are compared or inspired, all across the planet, until Wolf can find one that works better.

James D.

I am not impressed with the Spengler piece.

He loses me right from the first paragraph. Not that what he writes isn't true, but it's without context, which is this:

Every single one of us has ancestors (and probably not all that far back) who were rapists, and ancestors who were raped; ancestors who were murders, and ancestors who were murdered.

I also take extreme exception to this quote, which I guess he thought sounded clever:

Why do Americans wallow in nostalgia for the antebellum South? Partly for the same reason we like gangsters: We like the idea of getting something for nothing. We've always had a split personality, part Yankee farmer and part riverboat gambler

I don't really see any point reading past such a childish , casual and ignorant bit of slander against an entire people.

But if you do slog onwards, you get to this gen:

We are left with a suppurating, unhealed national wound. Black America is in jeopardy. For every 100 black women of marrying age there are only 81 men: the rest are dead or in jail. Seventy-three percent of African-American children are born out of marriage. Although universities admit blacks and whites in roughly equal proportions, only 40% of black men graduate within six years of matriculation.

Which has precisely NOTHING to do with slavery, or even post-slavery Jim Crow racism, because those statistics were far better (most notably the illegitimate birth figures) in the early 1960's, before the advent of the Great Society and Democrat policies that completely destroyed first the African-American family, and now are doing the same to every other demographic.

I'm sorry - I don't see anything worth taking from that article, not at all.

mike in houston

OK the two statues they want to get rid of in Lexington, KY are John C. Breckinridge and John Hunt Morgan. Breckinridge was the VP of the US under James Buchanan. You would think that being one of only two VP's from KY he would rate a statue. As for John Hunt Morgan, any one who could get themselves dismissed from my alma mater for dueling, deserves some consideration.

Yes, cboldt, and he's often quite good, but based on James D's summary he seemed to go off the rails here.

Porchlight

So Vice/HBO just happened to be on the Charlottesville scene on Friday night and just happened to film the tiki torch protest, which didn't look staged at all, in glorious HD.

Jason Kessler just happened to be OFA/CNN/Occupy/hardcore Obama supporter until he just happened to fall onto the KKK train in January 2017 when Trump was inaugurated.

ACLU just happened to get involved to make sure Kessler was able to hold onto his permit after the city attempted to revoke it.

When the actual statue rally was over, the Charlottesville police just happened to decide to force the rally protesters to exit the park in single file past the armed Antifa gauntlet rather than directing them to leave the park through the protected exit. The police then just happened to decide to not do anything to keep the peace after Antifa started attacking and confrontations broke out.

Brennan Gilmore, former State Department employee and campaign chief of staff for Tom Perriello, just happened to be at the protest in Charlottesville on Saturday and just happened to film events and just happened to get instainterviewed by all the major MSM outlets (who later erased his name from their online articles) before he even shared his video and just happened to get his article on Charlottesville instapublished by Politico the next day, and his former boss Perriello, who just happens to be a Democrat candidate for VA governor this November, just happened to get *his* article on Charlottesville instapublished by Slate on Sunday.

And the MSM outlets all just happened to instantaneously decide to use the same phrase, "white nationalist," when covering events, even though it hadn't been much used before.

And the story just happened to be the only story the MSM has been willing to cover with any interest since the weekend.

Just want to make sure I have it all straight.

Do I have it all straight?

Captain Hate

Sorry to lash out, Appalled; I'd blame it on a sore back but that would be deflection. As long as you concede good faith on my part you can say what you will.

derwill, yet another adorable, irredeemable deplorable

Throughout history, there have been defining moments that force you to chose a side. And if you don't chose a side, one will be chosen for you. This is why we must defend the KKK and the neo-Nazi's right to assemble and speak out in defense of a Confederate general's statue, no matter how much that offends our own sensibilities. Because once we accept the premise that our rights aren't universal, that it is necessary to deny some people the right to speak or assemble because we find their political ideology offensive, then we are by default accepting the premise that those rights don't exist for us either. In fact, those right don't exist at all.

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2017/08/gore-the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving.php

Almost ten years ago, not long after Al Gore’s first entry into the slasher/horror film genre (An Inconvenient Truth), I had occasion to ask a straight-shooting “mainstream” climate scientist I know slightly what he thought of Gore’s film. I was fishing to see whether he’d comment on some of the more obvious howlers that Gore included in the film, but instead after a long pause he said, “I wish he’d made the film with John McCain.” In other words, Gore should have tried to make it a bipartisan effort. McCain is the perfect person and is so vain that he surely would have done it. He had, at that point, sponsored two greenhouse gas emissions-trading bills with Democratic senators, and also a bill with John Kerry to mandate much higher mileage standards in the American car fleet (22 Senate Democrats voted against that proposal, incidentally).

Okay. Can we summon SMOD for merely ONE member of the GOPe? Or would that be redundant, given this member's imminent shuffling off of his mortal coil?

Clarice Feldman

Porchlight, my first reaction to your post--re the ACLU--was that it was an odd move by the ACLU which lately has hardly been (as it used to be) a defender of free speech. Hard to catch up especially when you spend your time at football practices:) But why does it take 152 years to realize that we had a Civil War which now is a big no-no and that participants on one side are all a bunch neer-do'well racists and no longer honorable.

How come?

Trump. That's why. Nothing else was working. Russian? phooey! Emoluments? phooey! Anti-Semite? phooey! They have nothing, even with all the help of the Deep State.

Race has always been more than a 3rd rail of politics. It is the emotional trigger that causes all kinds of pain in our society. You think we elected Barack Obama because he was brilliant and will lower the seas? Pshaw!

It only took 2 or 3 different angles to remove "those who will never rise again" but it didn't work. I once absently noted to my wife that "watch, sooner or later, they'll find him using the N word". They did even better than that and the planning, execution and reporting was worthy of a Bernstein orchestration.

In fact, they have made it so that with all the condemnation from all sides, even if Session's DOJ finds a conspiracy they will not be able to act. Its a done deal and Trump will have to move on.

I'll bet he is telling Ivanka and Eric and Don, Jr. he wishes he had never attended that WH correspondents dinner where Obama belittled him into running and winning.

And quotes:

In an age of affective polarization where Republicans and Democrats each increasingly dislike the other, it makes sense that Republicans may have taken an oppositional stance on climate change, at least partly, in response to signals from Democratic elites.Democratic messages have been more common in news coverage, and, unsurprisingly, consistent in a pro-climate direction. Meanwhile, Republican messages have been fewer in number, and, until the Obama presidency, ambiguous in direction. Contrary to conventional wisdom, only a small fraction of Republican messages on climate change explicitly denied the scientific consensus on climate change.

Gee, I wonder why there's so little pushback from the pusillanimous Rs on "climate change"? It's a real mystery!

cboldt

Here's an excerpt

"Mark your calendars and plan an action for Saturday, August 19th - National Day of Action against white supremacy. We will continue to focus our attention on the many institutions that maintain white supremacy. Identify symbols and institutions of white supremacy in your community. For some, this might be a monument. Also, we challenge you to use your imagination and consider all the symbols and institutions of white supremacy: a corporate headquarter, a local police union, a campus building, or a local politician that has yet to cut ties with the Trump/White Supremacist project, and for those close enough, White House. You may host a mobilization or rally. You can also get creative. For example, host a community education gathering during which attendees are encouraged to show their support through letter writing campaigns, online petitions, & other means. Consider hosting a speak-out or "popular assembly" where people are urged to develop concrete ways to push your community’s institutions to reject white supremacy and resource our liberation. Lastly, we challenge you, based on your local community, to consider not just what we must tear down but also what we must build in its place. Some, like those in Charlottesville are organizing around local equity / reparations legislation, others are working to defund dangerous policing and redirect those resources to local Black communities. We’ll be sharing an action toolkit and website with more resources soon."

Just for historical interest, since their names have both cropped up in JOM threads lately, here's:

John Brown of Harper's Ferry fame:

And John Birch of Chinese History fame:

The top photo of John Brown was from my recent 'Darwin and the Transcendentalists' reads and it really struck me as you can clearly see in his shaven face the sternness and conviction in the Abolitionist that must have so motivated his followers.

I must admit not knowing much about John Birch, other than his helping saving Doolittle's Raiders who crash-landed in China from being arrested by Jap forces, but he too had great hair.

I'm sure these same people would be up in arms if we ever sought to humiliate those we vanquished in battle by demanding they not honor their warriors or victims. Granted Germany doesn't have statues of Hitler (as far as I know), but I'm guessing both they and Japan have other memorials related to WWII. The Confederates surrendered honorably and are entitled to memorialize their warriors. They were not Hitlers.

So the other side were either members of those isms or at least have no problem associating with them.

I am not saying that none of the other side can possibly be "good people". I will say claiming there were "no good people" in the statue group is a feel good way to avoid cognitive dissonance to blame them exclusively.

Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught. There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!

derwill, yet another adorable, irredeemable deplorable

From Insty--the woman who destroyed the Durham Confederate statue is a pro-North Korean Marxist.

But then we shouldn't equate the slave states of the Democrat Party's Confederacy of a hundred and fifty years ago to the North Korean slave state of today, because slavery is justified if it's done in the cause of Marxism.

Holy Moly.

We had 4 US College basketball teams in Barcelona near the La Rambla mall (in the Euro sense): Arizona, Tulane, Clemson and Oregon State.

Oregon State was where Mooch's brother was coach for a while but that is trivia and nothing to do with anything.

Shemp is such an idiot. Thinking the Barc press conference would be in Spanish. Now he admits it will be in Catalan. Has he never read Patrick O'Brien?

 narciso.

You needn't finish the sentence, jib I don't know what he read at Ole miss

Well, that Spengler column I linked sure was a dud! Mea culpa.

Note on the Althouse post: Madison Mayor Soglin is the leading Dem Candidate to run against Walker in 2018. He's digging up war graves, and proud. (He probably plans to make them join a union, they are that twisted there).

Jack is Back!

I you watch derwil's video at 4:51 you will see a whole group of young people with no self esteem who needed to be included in something as long as there were cheers for them. Saw it in the 60's, much the same thing. No one loves us so lets love each other for whatever reason.

Is it wrong that the terrorism by ISIS in Spain shuts off the coverage of Charlottesville and I consider that a distraction from bashing President Trump.

Janet the expert 🚬

Porch's 4:44 is exactly right.

Did the Arlington high school kids who marched at the anti-war marches put on by A.N.S.W.E.R. know the details about the group sponsoring the march?

I can remember posting about that during the Bush years.

I can see ME going to an event to stand up against removing historical statues & monuments. I always look into who sponsors events, but I don't know that everyone does.

"Spain had a Civil War too"

And a drunken fisherman wrote a book about it as I recall.

There's a book about ours too "Woe to Live On." Some bad sh*t went down under Old Glory as well.

This whole business is disgraceful.
