Obviously it's climate change because over a period of time, let's say 100 years, Guamanians will suffer year by modeled year. Whereas with a nuke its all over instantaneously. Pffffttt!

Miss Marple the Deplorable

narciso,

I know you disagree. I respectfully disagree with you.

I have a particular dislike for Stranahan, because several years ago I golt bilked of around $50 from him when he was running a "How to write a blog" course on line.

It was worthless, full of lots of attitude but no information, and on top of that he said that you could not do one unless you were willing to put your own name on the blog and not use a psuedonym. He seemed VERY interested in collecting names. So I quit it.

I have not trusted him since then, and I look at him as one who insinuates himself into politics in order to make money. He's hooked onto Trump now, but will turn in a New York minute if he sees the chance to get money from the other side.

I am not fond of detaiing my foolishness in public, but I learned a good lesson from that. This is why I go with what the President says and not interpretations of staffing by outsiders, no matter how well-intentioned they are (and I believe some are not).

Re the 301 trade investigations of China... Sundance mentions a 35% tariff. A little direct experience on IP licensing in China. Per long discussions with the USTR and State Dept, I have two choices:

A. Export my product (manufacturing IP) to China. The tariff is over 100% last I looked.

B. Create a subsidiary in China, owned 51% by Chinese, with full ownership of all IP transferred to it.

Option B is a non starter... IP is the sole asset of my firm. (Yes, all my competitors in China did this. Where do you think Chinese tech gets it's code?).

Option A prices me out of the market. That is OK, given I don't trust IP protections in China anyway.

Such an investigation run fairly is a nuclear sledgehammer. Long overdue.

Option A is not competitive.

henry,

Back in the 90's my ex-husband was in Germany touring companies that made mining equipment. One of the German guys said that they would only sell the Chinese any machinery if they bought at least 10 units. (These were very expensive longwall mining machines costing tens of millions of dollars.)

He said the reason for that is that they knew if they sold to the Chinese, they would just copy them and sell them under a Chinese brand.

Also, before the unfortunate dissolution of my marriage, I learned that the Chinese are all over Africa, buying up property or flat-out illegally mining without government permission. I assume the President is aware of this through his own intelligence.

I going to stick up for Sessions. Not for the DoJ or FBI or other corrupt institutions, but I think the man has a decent sense of proportion and discretion.

The difficulty any manager or leader has is the minions execute policy, and often lack the same sort of proportion and discretion. The manager takes the blame (rightfully so), but when looking at abuse of process, I think it's a step to far to assign the minion's zeal to the manager.

Of course I don't grant this presumption to Lerner or Kosisken or Holder. Some managers in fact prefer tyranny.

cboldt "OL - Equivalents to those great people exist today, and their ideas present just as much a threat to the established order as Madison and his fellow travelers did."

Some equivalents exist I am sure, but they are far fewer and have much less political power than did the Founders. IIRC, there were 56 Founders who signed the Dec of Ind in 1776, and only about that same number a decade or so later when the Constitution was written and sold to the public for ratification. The total population was about 2.5M in the 1770s including .5M Blacks who of course had zero political power. So maybe we had, say, 75 great minds out of 2M, and almost all of them had significant sway over their states and towns. At that ratio, we would look for (75/2M X 325M)= 12,000 comparably well read and thoughtful "Founder Quality" leaders, or almost 250 in each state.

If we had that many, we could populate the federal government leadership in the three branches (535+9+say25=569) 21 times over with no repeats.
