I was at Trump Tower this morning, not realizing he was on his way to town, but I overheard staff talking about an upcoming visit. They were speaking respectfully, but they were saying "it's hard when he's in town." One guy said something about "working residential" - I guess that means family apartments.

Of course they played dumb when I asked if he would be in town soon (I honestly didn't know about his visit until just now). Oh well, I probably went at the right time because security will be crazy now.

daddy

This piece from a Lefty Aussie reporter (are there any other kinds?) in the Sydney Morning Herald ought to be titled "Why The New York Times is so Dangerous," instead of being titled A visiting cousin told me she voted for Trump. Here's what I did next

It ought to be titled that because this jackass sucks up everything he knows about America from David Brooks and Frank Bruni, and with big added dollops of swallowing uncritically such schlock as "The Handmaids Tale." What an ass of a cousin, but sadly Oz is full of such morons in their Press.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Porchlight,

I imagine it IS hard when he's in town, as they have to set up all sorts of screening for people to go into the building, plus there are barricades and protests outside. They probably get a lot of complaints from tenants, too.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

daddy,

Not only the press. I got accosted by an Aussie at a memorial statue in Hyde Park back in 2008.

I got a lecture on cowboy foreign policy and how superior Obama would be.

Porchlight

Yep, MM. Totally understandable. There was plenty of security outside and inside the building, including police dogs, but having no baseline, I couldn't tell if it was a normal amount now that he's president. We did see several police vehicles yesterday at neighboring hotels as well.

Frau

A yuuuge thumbs down to the giant arse-with-ears who will be hosting cockholstering the Emmy awards.

I hope his business drops off.

common man

Aussies are great and by and large love Americans. I met one jackwing in 3 weeks in Oz. Everyone else, too numerous to count, were warm and welcoming. Something about a journalism degree makes folks assume they know lots of about a whole bunch of things of which they understand next to nothing or worse...

Captain Hate

I hope my life never becomes so empty that I spend it watching illiterate fare like the Emmys.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Frau,

There is a concerted effort on Twitter to get people to watch ANYTHING else, whether on other channels, Netflix, etc. or to just turn the TV off.

I hope the ratings are very, very low.

I wouldn't watch even if I had cable. I know almost none of the people or programs nominated.

My entertainment is the internet and watching Trump's presidency.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Tillerson, as usual, is very impressive.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

What a clueless imbecile.
He just gushes with humility and recognition of his fallibility but never once considers whether his "facts" are facts or even whether he should reconsider his opinions.
His tremendous humility consists of biting his lip harder the next time some dumbass disagrees with him.
He has rediscovered some slight bit of manners but nothing remotely approaching humility or even basic curiosity.

Susan Rice spied on Trump's people for the benefit of Muslim Bro'hood?

From Wictor's tweets, the Muslim Brotherhood has been erased from the Middle East. CAIR may have it's remaining leadership in a convenient NoVa spot.

Bar owners in Indianapolis are concerned about the Colts season being a stinker, and thus reducing their revenue.

I'll still do my part to help bail them out, Miss M, but "Pee Yew," Colts.

maryrose

JimNorCal:
That is a disturbing article.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

daddy,

Local radio started #paganowatch.

Frau Kopp Ab

I have never watched the Emmys and would not start now especially with the crass, vulgar, rude, and despicable, pathetic man who will be filling the screen. He is an insult to his country, his parents, and his alleged faith. In earlier times he would have had his tongue ripped out, been dragged to the border and thrown out without hope of return.

I am not amused by his inserting himself into my life in any way. I remove spiders from the house instead of squashing them; the vast majority of spiders are more useful and harmless than this miscreant.

I worked for George Schultz and he is the smartest person I ever met and that includes 4 Nobel winners in science that I also interfaced with or worked.

Rex Tillerson reminds me so much of George in his manner, intellect, calm delivery and critical explication that literally devours the liberal heart and meme of that CBS jackalope.

daddy,

Remember how Oz was founded. My great-grand uncle worked a ship there went adios mike foxtrot and ended up owning a bar in the gold mining district. Killed his Irish emigrant wife and went to jail for 7 years, came back and reopened the bar. Aussies rule!

Why not?

I agree, maryrose. As has been asked before, if Obama and aides were Muslim how would their actions and priorities differ?

jimmyk

I was at Trump Tower this morning, not realizing he was on his way to town

I believe this is the week he addresses the UN. My SIL in the Secret Service is in NYC (instead of VT where she is normally) working every day 8am-11pm.

daddy

Jack,

Reminds me of that classic bit in the Bio of an enlisted Sailor on one of the First Fleet's , John Nicol, Mariner where he tells us that he fell in love with his first wife as he was knocking the rivets off her leg-irons on the voyage down to Botany Bay!

As I recall, they had a baby, then she ran off into the Bush with another convict she apparently considered a better catch) and John never found her or the baby again no matter how hard he tried.

Appalled

Porch,

Hope you visited Tiffany's while you were in the neighborhood of Trump Tower.

Porchlight

Yes, jimmyk - I wasn't paying enough attention to figure it out. I've been mostly out of pocket hanging out here in town with y'all and with my college pals. And you saw my phone. :)

Porchlight

Too rich for my blood, Appalled! But it was cute to see people taking photos of it when I walked by.

DrJ

The newest E-communist arrived yesterday. Their American coverage is terrible, and their anonymous US editorial goes under the name of Lexington. Many years ago it was worth reading and decent -- these days it is nearly unreadable except to see what the "other side" says.

In this issue, Lexington looks at Hillary's new book. I learned the following:

A second complaint is the hyperventilating coverage mainstream outlets gave to Mrs Clinton's use of a private e-mail server while secretary of state. This, as she concedes, was a fatheaded blunder. But it broke no law, caused no security breach and, while frowned upon, was not especially unusual at the State Department.

Isn't that your understanding too? :)

It gets worse every day and IMO, few care.

IMO, aided by people like Susan Rice and her boss..

daddy

"no slogans were shouted out during the attack, and it was not thought to be terrorism related" said a source close to the case, about the woman in Marseille France throwing acid into the faces of 4 American tourist women.

jimmyk

DrJ, it used to be that the Brits could be counted on for more objective reporting and analysis of the US than US journalists, but now they seem to just parrot (or worse) the AP, CNN, etc.

Amazing how to the Washington Post Scooter Libby saying "You heard that too" or "Words to that effect" counted as irrefutable proof of a conspiracy to intentionally release Valery Plame's Secret CIA Identity to enemy forces, but Pakistani national Imran Awan's secret server sucking in all Confidential data from 46 DEM Congressman's IT computers to a hidden location in some Alexandria garage is devoid of any wrongdoing whatsoever.

President Trump has arrived in Manhattan via Marine One, landing at the Wall Street heliport.

When I subscribed to the Economist back in the 80's and 90's it was the exception to every damn leftist journal around. Hard to believe it has made this transition to where it is now. Leftism. progressivism are viral diseases that infect and affect everything they touch.

It could have been a letter to the editor or a subscription but something snuck in and did the damage.

DrJ

We all have our guilty pleasures, right? Ones that we know are not good for us, but we enjoy them anyway.

For me, one is the movie "The Firm." It's not a very good movie -- it stars Tom Cruise, who is second in my opinion only to Julia Roberts as the worst actor of Hollywood -- but there are a few scenes that I love, including the one with Paul Sorvino and Joe Viterelli near the end.

Yet I watch it anyway. Why? The entire score is Dave Grusin at the piano, and it is magnificent. Grusin is sort of a Hollywood studio musician gone big time, with lots of movie scores and awards to his name. He's definitely Hollywood, but I always enjoy him.

So here's one from that movie that you may (or may not!) know:

We were there in NYC for the UN address by W back in 2007 when Ahmendijad was there. We were staying in the Waldorf-Astoria and W and the terrorist was staying there or nearby. Security was incredible. We actually got to meet the anti-sniper team who were getting into their vehicle to go to the buildings they would be using. Frederick even got a high five.

The security is tight, amazingly protective and in my opinion non peneatrable.

maryrose

Frau:
Agree with your take on the Sultan article.
He really has Hillary's number.
Best description and I bet she plotted her revenge during those walks in the woods.
I actually feel sorry for Bill at this point.
I also recall during his heart surgery, she was a semi presence.

DrJ

JiB,

I've subscribed to the E-communist since the late 1980s. You are right: It was a standout for many years. Sadly, in the last five to ten years it has been drifting leftward, particularly in their US reporting.

I still think it is worth reading, but it has become far less compelling.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

It occurs to me that we now have an entire generation that really hasn't seen any westerns, unless they caught some old ones on a cable channel.

Jack is Back!

DrJ,

Not only the Economist but also unpolitical scribbles like the Paris Review and London Review of Books. Use to be criitical journals or writings and publications. Poetry and letters. Yeah, some of it was very liberal in outlook and criticism but not now. Now we are discussing high writings, poetry and novels as if Trump is going to outlaw writing.

Unfreakingbeliavble.

daddy

Having almost caught up I see now that it is my fault to be interested in finding out if the Parson's Green bomber was a Chechen, then a Syrian, and now an iraqi: Focusing on whether the Parsons Green bomber was a refugee is shamelessly Islamophobic, not to mention pointless

When I saw the headline “Foster Kid is Bucket Bomber” in The Sun, with similar ones proliferating around the web, my heart sank. A teenage terrorist who may have been a child refugee and taken into foster care is being talked to by the police. It is a godsend to every single foreigner-hating Islamaphobe who will seize on this – our – national tragedy of a narrowly averted mass murder on a packed tube train and say “I told you so”.

It feeds the notion that there are terrorists in the midst of these refugees, including the younger ones, and offers the perfect excuse to ban them from entering this country, no matter how pitiful they appear.

The notion?

It is certainly true that many currently do what they do in the name of Islam. As has been said many times, but never enough, that this does not make Islam a violent or terrorist creed. It has nothing to do with religion, and everything to do with power and politics, as terrorism always has been.

It would be difficult to be more intentionally dishonest in describing the Islamic Terrorism threat facing Britain than the simplistic framing foisted on the public by this journalist.. Mentally he's already living under Sharia.

maryrose

DrJ:
I totally concur with your assessment of Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise.
I can just imagine better actors looking at them and wondering how they are so admired. Not believable to me in the roles they have played.
Steel Magnolias comes to mind.

DrJ

JiB,

I never read those, so I've not seen the change.
The former MrsJ did read the NY Review of Books, which I looked at from time to time. It was all too precious for me -- I'll take Chemical and Engineering News or JACS (for example) instead, thanks.

For a levity break, Insty has a link to some of the best Far Side cartoons although how anyone can narrow them down to a mere 30 of his best is ridiculous.

I know we have a lot of Cowboy fans here but excuse me while I say that the Broncos are doing an incredible job of busting Jerry's bubble.

Thank you.

And since when did that hack become the most influential man in the NFL? Well if he can depart Goodell then good for him but what has Jerry Jones ever won as owner of the Boys compared to Bob Kraft??

GUS

Utter HORSE SHIT. This is why THE LEFT is MY enemy. They say shit like this without blinking.

daddy, I read down through the comments on your post at 6:23, and was encouraged to see that many people think Sean O'Grady's viewpoint in the article is preposterous. Here's one I copied (and enjoyed) though the commentor got the reporter's name wrong.

"I really cant believe this article. There ARE terrorists among the refugees.Parson Green proves it. ISIS is losing a massive amount of ground in ME.so will now concentrate on infiltrating Europe. Terror attacks will accelerate. Doesnt Sean OCasey think we should protect ourselves.? The only sure way to stop children drowning in the Med. is to stop them boarding the traffickers boats. As long as it is known that migrants are being allowed to saty in Europe they will just keep coming. In Australia this traffic was stopped when the migrants got no further than an internment camp."

DrJ

I don't think that's right, henry.

Pearson sold the E-communist (and the Financial times) in 2015, I think, after having had it for almost 60 years. The decline began before the sale; the "newspaper" (as they call themselves) had been fine under their ownership.

GUS

Yes sir, at ATLANTA.

henry

I thought they sold before that Dr J. But my memory is far from perfect.

DrJ

FWIW, I call it the "E-communist" because that was a mispronunciation my granddaughter made when she was very young. I burst out laughing; she had no idea why.

The name stuck. Sadly, it fits now.

GUS

Oh no Joan, Obama told us that the "refugees" were Mom's with 3 year olds. Why would anyone worry about that. Yeah, I think WHITE SUPREMACISTS like President Trump are our real concern....and Europes.

The gals have taken over the TV so we are watching now the Final Round of Season 2 The Great Brit Bake-Off. They just did the bio's of the 3 remaining challengers, all Brit gals that started baking as little children.

It reminds me of reading that goofball Greenhouse's tweet, angry at Trump for letting an 11 year old do the horribly dangerous and unsafe job of pushing a freakin' lawnmower.

What the hell is more dangerous, pushing a lawnmower, or letting 8 year old children shove crap in and out of ovens pre-heated to 350 F?

Gawd, I hate the Press.
