My sister in Lehigh Acres is not overly concerned. Lehigh Acres is inland and apparently somewhat elevated (according to her; I am not a geography expert). In any event, I am praying for every person in Irma's path.

henry

The surge will be worse than the wind (FL building codes are good vs wind). That is on the trailing side of the storm. Ie Naples will have the eye pass tomorrow at 8 am, but the surge will be Monday afternoon / evening.

For extra fun, Irma is setting off tornadoes ahead of the main storm. Had a couple south of Naples earlier.

In any event, I expect communications to go dark this evening, and not come back for a few days. That will be nail biting time.

Watching the NBC Miami live feed. Apparently Rubio has suggested that people shouldn't go outside and get hit by a tree.

It is a wonder that he didn't go further in the primaries.

Brought over from the previous thread.

Checking in...

Decided to stay in Gulfport as the winds aren't forecast to pick up toward Tallahassee/Panhandle til Monday morning. Still doesn't look like anyone chose to head westward this far for hurricane relief. The pool is crowded and the skies are finally showing some cumulus clouds coming in from the SE - probably outer ones generated by the spinning of the hurricane 500? miles away. Prior to these clouds it had been weirdly cloud free both inland and out to sea - probably the hurricane sucking all the moisture out of the air for hundreds of miles around. Just praying we don't find gas shortages on the trip home.

We drove through Dennis back in 05 heading down 75 and across Alligator Alley heading towards the Keys for vacation and you couldn't see the front end of your car with the wipers at full max and the hurricane was already up north of Tampa when we left Tampa that morning. The night before, we were probably one of about 20 families riding rides at Busch Gardens between rain bands. Hard core coaster riders r us.

When we got to the Keys, the worst damage from the storm was pool furniture and coconuts in the pool. The daughter had a big time diving for coconuts that afternoon.

We've been shopping for property in the Port Charlotte area for several months now - scouting for the perfect fixer upper. Now, we'll probably have way too many to choose from unfortunately. :(

The brother in Sarasota in a condo right next to the causeway on the inland waterway finally got some sense last night and boogied out on the first available flight to where ever. Ended up in Chicago. He's about 3rd or 4th floor up in his condo building but he's stubborn as a mule and has many developments going in Sarasota and in the Caribbean Islands right now. He's waiting to get a report on how much damage they suffered. He can't get in or out to check on them. So far a few look to be total rebuilds in the VI. :(

Adding:

Prayers that it ain't as bad as TWC is hyping/not hyping with their use of "in harm's way" and that all in DANGER stay safe and sensible.

Is it just me or does everyone else hate the euphemism "in harm's way"... you are fn in DANGER not some sugar coated PC vagary. Just damn.

Praying!

A fire hero is speaking now. During q&a a reporter asks why a 6 foot storm surge is so bad when Andrew brought a 17 foot surge.

The hero is amazed.

Gee, Henry. I was in the same positon some years ago when my aged parents sat out a hurricane in South Florida. Dorry.

Off soon to our Historical Museum's end of summer cocktail party.

Enjoy TWC as it makes worry-warts out of everyone with property or relatives in Florida:)

Captain Eric says all is well in Sarasota so far. No outages. Just a little wind. 8am tomorrow is the big one.

henry

I have the Ft Myer Fox News feed going.

Yeah, my mom has been through several hurricanes at her condo. We have a plan, and know what to expect. Except this storm is weird. Pus my brother just moved to Naples in December. He's inland, but I'm not sure exactly where. I think it is close to 75.

Allapundit thinks Cohn should ride it out for the good of the country. Er...

Politico reports that he’s “in a great mood” and “highflying” ever since Trump and Chuck Schumer started bro-hugging each other a few days ago. That makes sense, as Cohn has known Schumer for years and to all appearances is a Democrat himself, as Steve Bannon enjoys reminding people. If this really is the start of a new centrist Trump 2.0 who’s prepared to deal with Schumer and Pelosi on left-ish projects like infrastructure and the DREAM Act, obviously Cohn would want to be part of that. He’ll be in a prime position to influence a president who’s newly open to liberal policy initiatives. If he becomes a key go-between for Trump and Schumer, he might end up with that Fed position after all. It’d be bananas for a “globalist” to bail out of the White House just weeks after Bannon got the boot and Trump appears to be taking a globalist turn himself.

Just had a call from my 87 yo mother-in-law. She has had it on ALL DAY - she lives in west Tennessee. She is worried to death that a tree will fall on her house. She is worried about us here in Atlanta because if something happened I could not do much with my broken neck.

I told her to turn off the Weather Channel and watch an old movie or Food Network.

In High School I lived outside Morehead City NC on the highest piece of land in the county---11 feet. We lived on the waterfront overlooking the sound, just next to Spooners Creek Marina. We rode out one hurricane and I recall going outside during the passage of the eye of the hurricane. Amazing stillness and so captivating.

That small stretch of the of East Coast is unusual in that since it is aligned due east-west for about 40 miles, we could always watch the sun setting in the West over the water. From reading asw's post above, it appears he's from near Harker's Island so that was probably the same for him growing up.

This is from the previous thread, and for a question by Another Bob: in 2013 I decided to freeze my credit reports with the Big 3 (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion as I knew it was highly unlikely I would ever require any reports in the future--I had no need for new credit cards, or any other sort of credit activity. These companies set up the freeze efficiently and quickly, and provided documentation to confirm. I've never lifted the freezes, so I have just continued to assume that they have been in effect all these years. Whether this is a help or useless with respect to the Equifax hack, I have no idea. Maybe a JOMer will ahve some insight?

I'm also delurking long enough to wish all the best for you in Irma's way. In my neck of the woods (the South West) we have hazy skies from wild fires as far away as Oregon. As I joked with JOMer Lyle, between Harvey, Irma, quakes in Mexico, tsunami warnings, and wildfires, some are wondering whether the Rapture is next!!

Extraneus

It's one of AP's worst, TK.

To think, Cohn knew all along that Trump was right about Antifa and about fine people supporting statues, but piled on "as a [virtue signaling] Jewish American" anyway, even praising domestic terrorists.

"Citizens standing up for equality and freedom can never be equated with white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and the K.K.K.," Mr. Cohn said. "I believe this administration can and must do better in consistently and unequivocally condemning these groups and do everything we can to heal the deep divisions that exist in our communities."

Mr. Cohn added, "As a Jewish American, I will not allow neo-Nazis ranting 'Jews will not replace us' to cause this Jew to leave his job."

I'd be disapponted in Trump if he doesn't pull the slime-ball's wings off before dumping him.

It really is quite a coincidence that Fox News is such a hotbed of sexual harassment, unlike any other media outlet. Sure, they do have some babes, but really, how is it possible that a culture developed at that one place in which it's ok to hit on the help? Has anyone worked at a place where that's the practice? Maybe I've led a sheltered career, but I've worked with thousands of people and have never heard any such allegations.

I've spent the last hour channel hopping for Irma updates. Nothing I watched/heard indicated FL highways are currently unusable. It's clear from phone calls from people staying that there are folks who choose not to leave their homes no matter what they're told will happen to those homes after many hours of continual battering by strong winds driving walls of water. I got angrier and angrier at these selfish people for whom brave rescuers will risk their lives.

Extraneous, I don't believe that Fox News is any more of a hotbed of sexual harassment than any other place in the entire world. I just don't. I think guys joke. I think women wiggle and giggle and encourage it -- if, in fact, it does occur. Also, I think we can flip it, and women start the flirting or joking or whatever.

Have we ever seen any real evidence of sexual harassment at Fox, other than a woman "claiming" it happened, and then others jumping in to say 'it happened to me, too.' If it did, I'll bet they encouraged it. And, whatever happened, I'll bet it has happened at CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, and every other network or other organization where people work.

Sexual attraction -- it happens.

The contingent of brave rescuers from San Diego should be on quintuple overtime by now. I doubt that their efforts during this storm will budge them from their rather cush tier way down low on the list of deadliest jobs.
