Where is everybody?

cathyf on iPad

Really? A first? I never get first! (Now a last, when I'm blathering away on the dead thread, yeah, those I get!)

henry

Hi cathyf!

lyle

Hope you're not a Temple fan, cathyf...

lyle

Or a Niners fan...😬

Captain Hate

My iPad keyboard was behaving strangely on the last thread: no autocorrect (a mixed bag) and no automatic capital letter after a period. But now it's fine...

Buckeye

I have been watching the Temple USF game. Temple looks befuddled at best.

Buckeye

CH, I have had that happened to me on rare occasions, never been able to figure out the root cause.

lyle

"Befuddled." Quite charitable, Buckeye. I'd go with pathetic. They're making USF look better than they really are, Flowers notwithstanding.

Captain Hate

Buckeye, usually when that happens it's time to refresh my iPad, but I did that recently and it wasn't required now. I'm as befuddled on the cause as I think you are.

JimNorCal

It's happened to me (no auto correct). Problem definitely goes away after reboot or if you restart the app. But sometimes heals itself by, for example, selecting a new web page.

lyle

Full disclosure to our astute, wish-she-would-comment-more cathyf: I don't give the slightest rip about football tonight as I'm sure you don't either.

Now, onto my silly guilty pleasure: Midsomer Murder.

I was also reacting to the suggestion by RG that I know little or nothing about complicated legal matters, and looking at my decades paying lawyers, that stung.

Posted by: Old Lurker | September 21, 2017 at 06:22 PM

Go back and check the text, OL. I'm virtually certain I wrote just the opposite of that. I asked a question re whether you knew nothing at all about complex legal process and stated you write as if you don't but I know damn well you do. That's my recollection.

I certainly meant to jab you, but certainly did not intend to deliver a low blow.

Catalonia independence advisory vote heating up. Some officials favoring independence have been detained. Now this.

https://mishtalk.com/2017/09/21/spain-sends-in-the-troops/
Spain has discreetly hired ferries to be moored in the Port of Barcelona as temporary housing for possibly thousands of police specially deployed to keep order in rebel Catalonia and help suppress an illegal independence referendum.

The aim is to amass more than 16,000 riot police and other security officers by the Oct. 1 referendum

This article is I believe a response to the misleading article from Buzzfeed yesterday.

James D.

MM, the thought of people like Zuckerberg in charge of anything more important than a French fry vat at a fast food restaurant scares me to death.

squaredance

JD: Even then you are cutting it pretty close.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

James D., squaredance,

One day last year, for reasons I now forget, I came upon a Facebook video Zuckerberg made. I believe it was done in his continuing effort to make himself seem like a regular guy.

It was nothing but him chatting with viewers while assembling a new gas grill on his patio.

He has, if possible, negative charisma.

And like Saboto's post last night, I believe he stole the idea for Facebook to begin with. Those twins got money to keep quiet.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Regarding the post at 6:15, Donnelly is a possible yes vote on tax proposals.

I would not be surprised to see him win, because the GOP will have a pretty fierce primary.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see him switch parties if he does win.

Robin, the upstate NY one

MM, your 5:23am twitter thread is why, I think, that Trump is supporting Strange in AL. That is a shot across the bow to the Freedom Caucus that the MAGA movement is bigger than the individual players grandstanding. Jump on the Trump Train or plan on being primaried. I guess we'll see.

squaredance

MM: Zuckerberg has acquired the epithet of "The Most Punchable Face in America", and he richly deserves it. It will be amusing to watch him make a run at the Presidency, which we all should assume is coming.

Personally, I think The Zuck is just a front man for other interest--I doubt he could design a toilet seat--but certainly he is an exemplar of how bizarre the SV crowd has become, and how detached they are from the nation at large, and from reality in general.

Far from being "cutting edge" leaders of advanced technology, the whole bunch of Google, FB and twitter are actually holding us back, so far as I am concerned (not a FB user, BTW).

If MAGA is to succeed these folk will have to be addressed sooner or later (I do understand that there are bigger fish to fry at the moment).

We can begin with modern and strict privacy laws, anti9trust lawfare, and, hope against hope, limitations fo web advertising, or at least widening access to it and breaking these cartel like structures that plague the Web. Ultimately, if we can reformed the FED we might see some real pricing of risk, and some of the loonier "projects" of these sort of corporations would be cast aside.

It is a great perversity of the age that these people have so much money and influence yet offer so little of value, and fact cause much damage.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Robin,

Moore will be a damaging force in the party, not because he will support Trump, but because he will attract press coverage for his extreme ideas as shown in that article.

Moore loves the spotlight and will not be helpful.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

squaredance,

That guy I follow on Twitter, Thomas Wictor, says that those people somehow have gotten the idea that they have money and power because they are virtuous, and thus feel compelled to bend us to conform to their way of thinking, rather like religious conversion.

This morning Fox was covering a little problem Amazon has with their "people who buy this also bought this" feature, in which if you type in "ball bearings" the other things you are suggested to buy are the ingredients for a bomb. "They will be addressing this issue."

Well, how about DISABLING that feature until you figure out how to stop that? Are add-on sales more important than national security? Apparently so, if you're Amazon.

This language, from a Stanford pub on Social Innovation from this week, does nothing but hype my belief that Charlottesville was a set-up designed to launch desired conversations and initiatives in schools and on campuses.

"In the wake of events like the attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, the challenge to lead an asset-based, solutions-oriented, equity-centric narrative—with action by and with those on the front lines of addressing structural and systemic barriers in our communities—is urgent. We cannot stand behind or ignore fear-inducing statements and hateful actions; we must elevate a different narrative, and directly address inequities and overt injustice and discrimination. Direct action, individually and collectively, is the only way we can overcome the suffocating tentacles of racism, sexism, xenophobia, and discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion, immigrant status, socio-economic status, language ability, and disabilities."

I wouldn't. I guess it's perspective and what your goals are.

I am documenting the race because I noticed so many discussing it on Conservative Treehouse.

It's interesting to me that the President is going out on a limb to campaign for Strange. There has to be a reason.

My fear is that Moore cannot win in the general election. He has very loyal supporters, but I am not confident that they can pull him over the finish line.

Funny thing on FB ads... Like Google they have a huge bot net problem in that they charge for ads never seen by humans. Proctor & Gamble shut down Google / FB ads without any impact on sales. Speaks volumes about the scam that is today's Silicon Valley.

henry

LOL Miss M. that goof is more wedgie magnet than man.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

henry,

I have never bought anything based on an internet ad. If I remember the ad, I remember it because it annoyed me and had a negative response from me on the product.

Also, if a web site requires I disable an ad blocker, I just won't visit it.

The best use of internet for products I ever saw was the Pioneer Woman web site. I haven't been there in a while, but she used to review products in articles and hold contests for winning the product. (Mixers, for example.) You could skip the reviews so it wasn't intrusive, but if you were at all in the market for an item, the reviews were useful, and she tempted you to read them by placing the contest entry link at the end of them.

Janet 🚬

Moore is fearless.
He's like Trump in that regard.

Why is the guy that opposes SODOMY considered extreme?
That Lawrence vs. TX ruling has huge consequences. They're teaching OUR kids about sodomy in school now. Glossy youth magazines do articles that are normalizing sodomy.

Why is the guy that opposes redefining marriage considered extreme?

American citizens rejected redefining marriage. State after state after state voted NO. Even California voted NO.
So why is Moore considered extreme?

Anyway...Moore is right & he is brave enough to stand up.

Schools shouldn't be teaching sexual techniques of ANY type.

I am not arguing that Moore isn't brave. And I agree with him on marriage.

However, gay marriage is now a right according to the Supreme Court, and getting that reversed is going to be a long slog.

I would present the reasons why marriage should be preserved in the traditional sense, rather than equating homosexuals with those who practice bestiality. That's how I feel about it.

I still think he will not be able to win the general, and I also feel that if he IS elected, he will not be as helpful to President Trump as people think.

How else do you explain Wilbur Ross, Steve Mnuchin, James Mattis, Ben Carson, and Rex Tillerson accepting the positions and doing all of this work?

They weren't going to take those jobs and risk their reputations on a blowhard who wings it. No way would they have done that.

Yes, Janet and MM, this rewriting of history is just so mystifying and stupid. The tribes occupying this country were savages -- they scalped, fought, enslaved each other.

Of course, the civilized Europeans were savages, too. They fought, killed, and stole land. Forced the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears after the U.S. government stole their land.

It's history. We can't change what happened hundreds of years ago. To try and soothe wounds and hatreds and fears of people long dead by indulging today's descendants (who most of the time haven't been hurt by anything except current unemployment, bad decisions, poor choices, or just being an idiot searching for some cause) especially the SJW way, only provokes hostility and anger in people who haven't hurt anyone or stolen anything or oppressed others.
