I won't put up the link, but if you want to read it there is a pretty darned good piece in WaPo about North Korean's dangerous trek to freedom through China, Laos, Thailand and then South Korea, where they become instant South Korean citizens. Well written, great photos.

Irma looks to me like an underachiever, thankfully.

hrtshpdbox

I did well with Georgia and Oklahoma. Didn't play the Florida Keys game.

Long night for Boise State fans as well. Maybe even a long season. :(

Re-posting my reply to 1st ever ATL TS warning hype--

Hyping a tropical storm warning for atlanta as a first when we had a prior hurricane warning in 1995 that proved true is a bit disingenuous.

That was opal a panhandle storm that hit atlnta with sustained winds in the 70s and felled hardwoods that kept power off for a week.

Hubby had subcontracted for a mutual fund that had not revealed they were using a 3rd party. He left at the height of the storm to make sure they stayed up. I was left home with a 1 year old-red- and her 3 year old brother.

Not something to forget.

I don't think stanford had much fun either last night.

Comanche Voter

I'm hoping Stanford got softened up for next week's game against San Diego State. State has a solid running back in Rashad Penny who went out for a romp against Arizona State last night. You beat Stanford with the run--if you beat them at all. And now after last night's SC game, Stanford is going to be all het up. Could be a bad night for the Aztecs next week.

Rising water temps not related statistically to hurricane frequency.

Two bits of insight from NBC's Today crew.

1)First Responders have hunkered down and are telling people that stayed behind that they cannot help them until the worst has passed.(risk mitigation)

2)A squirrel was very confused when it walked up to a fallen tree at a Wendy's parking lot.

This is unprecedented...hasn't been 2 Cat 4s hit the US mainland in the same hurricane season since 1915. I don't think they know the meaning of unprecedented.

Stay safe Florida peeps.

Clarice, how about rising *temperatures* after reading the newspaper?

“We shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own,” Obama said. His post was florid and self-serving. But five words in his lengthy screed —“through no fault of their own” — are undeniably true.

It’s not the fault of the “Dreamers” that their parents brought them here, without papers, as minors. On that we can agree. But whose fault is it that they are still in limbo? For that answer, Obama needn’t take to social media. He can simply look in the mirror.

It seems to me that most things that happened to kids are a result of their parents actions.DACA is no different. So now we're going let parents off the hook?

Jane

By the way someone just told me that John McCain said on NBC, I assume Meet the Press that the hurricane was the result of global warming

Sue

In 1995 we were in Panama City Beach vacationing when ERIN chased us out. Our hotel room was even with tops of the trees. I can still remember seeing those trees lay almost over when I finally told my husband I'm leaving. We had friends who stayed and their cars were totaled from debri hitting them. They were hunkered down in their hotel rooms, terrified, while we ate dinner in New Orleans. It was a 2 if I remember right. And the eye wasn't PCB.

Captain Hate

Midway through the first half of the Oklahoma/OSU game they did a shot of both head coaches; Lincoln Riley looked confident, even though they'd squandered many opportunities, and Urban Meyer looked nervous. Baker Mayfield played the best game I've seen him have. For being a former Buckeye QB, Kirk Herbstreit displays no homerism in his analysis.

Beasts of England

A Beasts' story:

I believe my female nightmare may finally be over. After 'dating' Samantha for about eight weeks, she showed up on my doorstep one morning last week - uninvited and unannounced - with all of her worldly possessions. Four suitcases, Tupperware bins, back packs, and several boxes of shoes.

Don't get me wrong, I love her more than I've ever loved another person who's not my progeny. And I always will. But she's a train wreck from Hell and way more than happy to tie me to the tracks. I thought I could get away with just bangin' the snot out of her once or twice a week while her boyfriend was at work; although I guess I'm just too good at what I do best. But, I digress...

She's finally gone, but not without a very loud and impressive fight. Her mom and stepdad drove over a few hours ago and literally dragged her back to rehab. She had stolen her mom's debit card before she moved in with me, and swiped $1,500 cash over three days. And then went shopping for shoes, clothes and drugs, but probably not in that order.

She told me she quit meth, and the best I can tell, she had. I checked her entire body for tracks - some places more frequently and carefully than others - and there were none. I knew she still smoked pot and did a few lines of coke - really no big deal. But after a few days, I noticed that she'd come back from the bathroom on a totally different plane - just railed. What I finally got out of her was that she had started snorting heroin...

I'll plead the Fifth, but will say that tomorrow is Day 1 for me being clean again. Right now, it's some much needed sleep for ol' Beasts. Love y'all, and I promise to get my shit back together.

As long as she's away, anyway...

The front page of New York Times worries that natural catastrophes from earthquakes to hurricanes make it seem like the End of Times.
But this is unhelpful.
Yes, Irma is a catastrophe, but it is also important to know that natural catastrophes are generally getting less dangerous, not more so.
This means we can stop panicking and start making smart solutions.
These are not mostly about cutting CO₂ but about simple and effective solutions like better infrastructure, better building regulations and no subsidized insurance.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I was talking to a friend of mine on the phone this morning about how grateful we are that Trump is in charge with the hurricanes and that he has responsible people operating efficiently in all of the cabinet positions.

We then discussed the GOP in Congress and how useless they are.

We decided that the parties are realigning, and should be labeled the Competent Party and the Incompetent Party.

Why we don't take the paper any more:
LATimes informing propagandizing the useful idiots:

Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, wrote about this (global warming = rising sea temperatures = more destructive hurricanes) in an op-ed after Hurricane Harvey hit Houston.
"Harvey was almost certainly more intense than it would have been in the absence of human-caused warming, which means stronger winds, more wind damage and a larger storm surge," he wrote.

Hubby gone to get oil for our generator that used to live in Fla.

One tip I have used during the height of harvey coverage and then again this am is to cross-check the airlines for ticket prices for known upcoming trips. Both times I was able to get tickets for at least 25% less than what was being quoted during work week or a typical weekend.

Keep in mind if you live somewhere not impacted by the storm.

MM: Not to be pick nits, but that that convoy looks like USMC to me. Those are their amphibious troop carriers--you can see this if you look at the front of the vehicle. These can come in from the sea from 20 miles out, so it would make sense in this circumstance to deploy them are transportation.

The Army does not have this type of platform, and I doubt that the Marines would just lend it to them; No doubt there are army units deployed as well. Certainly, there is a large deployment of medical personnel from all branches, and with a huge Army contingent.

(and I imagine that you will not see much looting where the Marines are deployed--or even drive by--so it is doubly smart.)

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I had forgotten about that. So I wonder which was the lie. Was she hiding that she thought she would win the presidency, so as not to look too confident? Or is she lying now to make people feel sorry for her and/or question the election because she spent that money believing she had it in the bag?

I thought it would take the Democrats 3 years before they hit the "what were we thinking?" stage so far as Hillary was concerned, but I see they are getting there in under a year.

Seriously, she has to be the absolute worst candidate that ever ran under a major party, bar none. She was, amazingly, worse than Sanders.

In the end, she will go down as one of those strange and momentary sideshows that American politics throws up from time to time, History will remember her but as a pathetic--almost cartoonish--manifestation of the boomers' last years--a grimy, corrupted, and, in the end, absolutely bat sh!t crazy avatar of the Progressive politics of the 50s and the 60s.

That is not to say that we did not dodge a bullet, and close indeed it was to our very vitals. Still, to those who think that had they run a better candidate the Democrats would have won, I have to wonder just who that person might have been? This might better be a excuse for the GOPe.

The Truth of the matter is that the Uniparty collectively showed us just how inept, narcissistic, obtuse and ham fisted--not to mention corrupt , venal and down right nasty--they truly are.

What a joy it is to watch Trump run rings around them. Trump's performance along with that of his team clearly show what real competence and leadership is about. This is the sort of stuff once took for granted, but have not really seen for quite some time.

Maybe there is hope for us yet.

Everybody know the trick on how to charge your cell phone using a 9 volt battery, a ballpoint pen spring, USB cable and a car charger (you know the plug that fits in the old cigarette lighter)?

If you don't have a generator and have lost power, take the spring out of the pen and clip it on the end of the car charger plug. Hook the plug up to the USB on one end, the other end in the phone and place the spring on the big terminal of the 9V battery and the end of the car charger on the smaller terminal.

Voila instant charge.

The challenge will be for the media to somehow portray the response by Trump and the Republican governors as the disaster. Believe me they are currently in their editorial meetins right now looking for every little slip up.

I don't know how much more Trump, Scott, Deal and all could do than what they have done so far.

Its been a masterful display of executive decision making, planning and execution. But what the hell does the MFM know about that? If they knew anything like that they would not be bleeding cash and collapsing.
