Antifa? weren't they looting in Ft Lauderdale? or was that #BLM?

maryrose

Love the Push Irma Someplace Else idea.
Just how do they propose to harness that energy?

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Too bad it isn't Hurricane Mame then we could all be antimame.

It is Dallas vs.your beloved Giants!

My brother just texted the surge has been called off for his house. Still at the shelter. But if no surge, his house should be mostly fine. Screened patio? We shall see.

"What this California woman learned in moving to a red state"

I gather she is surprised we aren't all cretins and bigots. Good.

However, I get the feeling that she is one of those Californians who will try to improve things here by voting democrat and pushing liberal policies.

There's a reason that our cost of living is so low that they will be able to pay off their debts accrued in California.

Naples Mayor tells MSNBC there is minimal structural damage in city -- no storm surge.

Mom texted the cars in the garage are fine. She's bummed, wanted a new one. Now she wants power back as a/c is her top priority.

jimmyk

I've noticed that about Althouse, that the people don't really know each other. I've been reading it more regularly the last six months, and pretty much all I know about anyone is that Michael K is a doctor and the tiresome Chuck is a lifelong Republican from Michigan.

They also don't keep up with the thread, so you get a lot of repetition. It's partly the format of the blog--people mostly stay on topic, and there are a bunch of threads going on simultaneously. Here we talk about whatever we want and just jump to the latest thread.

Rush was right!
Irma is a liberal hoax!

Catsmeat

I concur about community--you all are all sorts, but fair and smart and funny, and of course conservative. It is good to be part of these conversations, even when trying to join in feels like "joining" a firehose! And it's very good to know where people are--real experiences take place in real places and it's good to know about things--including weather and pets and family and so on--beyond the disembodied cacophony of the usual chat.

sbw

Oh, the huge manatees!

Barbara

Rush is lucky.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Catsmeat,

This is so true. I think knowing about families and pets and where people live imparts humanity, something we don't often run on to. (Twitter is a fine example of the disembodied cacophany you speak about.)

I think that is why it's pleasant to come here, and why I don't care to hang around places like Althouse or Breitbart.

Is it the case that typically only one of a spousal pair is involved in JOM and that the non participating half has some degree of befuddlement about what's going on?

Captain Hate

It's hard to say why some blogs have a sense of community and people actually know each other in real life and others don't. This isn't the only blog where I've met a number of other commenters but I probably interact with more JOMers off blog than any other site. I know that rich went to a North Va. Moron meetup.

henry

sbw, we've been pwned by Mother Nature.

Bubarooni

As a loyal, if somewhat dispirited Colts fan, I hung on to the bitter end.

60 Minutes then came on and though I would normally change the channel immediately, I'd heard Steve Bannon would be on and thought it might be worth sticking around to watch in case he kicked anyone in cajones. He did not disappoint.

Pressing my luck I stuck around for the next segment where I was reminded why I quit watching the show as it returned to it's usual idiocy.

The wizened dolt doing the segment started out with 'Since the end of the last ice age...'

What I think the Butt Nugget was trying to say with her limited intellect was 'Since the end of the last stadial...'

We've been in a frickin' ice age for about 2.6 million years with no let up in sight. Our civilization has been fortunate enough to flower during an interstadial when things are warmer. Our future descendants will either figure out how to terraform our planet to their liking or they'll be living in the next stadial, a cold world where all the Canucks will have to live in Florida year round for tens of thousand of years till the next interstadial.

Layers and layers of fact checkers...

Anyway, never leave science in the hands of the press.

Or politics.

Or sports.

Or popular culture.

Or .

Jack is Back!

I'll decide if it's a hoax how my son's house and mine come out of it. Rush has zilch to worry about. He's not on the beach like I am and others. It was a stupid comment, Iggy. How'd you feel if he said a forest fire in your vicinity is "nothing to worry about"?

People will lose their homes, some their lives. But nothing to worry about. Especially for the 6 million who evacuated. Why?

Nothing to worry about. That's why.

Free James D!

Well, the game started out with the refs giving Dallas a gift on a ridiculous spot for a first down, but the defense did its job. We'll see how the offense does without Odell tonight.

jimmyk

Is it the case that typically only one of a spousal pair is involved in JOM

Yes, in fact I think that's in the by-laws. Spouses are allowed at meetups, however. I've had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Clarice, Mrs sbw, and Mr Tonto.

Captain Hate

Is it the case that typically only one of a spousal pair is involved in JOM and that the non participating half has some degree of befuddlement about what's going on?

Definitely the case with me and I strongly suspect most others.

Catsmeat

JimNorCal, I'm married to a lifelong Democrat! We don't talk politics much at all, though he's as interested in the subject as I am and follows it as closely as I do. We are in fact quite happy together--marriages are mysterious things. He would love that I am Catsmeat, for instance, as we both love Wodehouse.

sbw

jimmy,

Captain Hate

JiB,

If you're still lurking, is there any chance you'll be available for the traditional pre Thanksgiving meetup somewhere in Manhattan. Mrs H is pretty sure we're coming out again.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Bubarooni,

CBS has various clips up on their site but not the entire thing. Irritatingly, you can't seem to do them in order, because when you click on them then the others are scrambled around so you can't keep track of which is first.

Surely that interview will make it to YouTube. I am going to keep searching for it so I can watch the whole thing. Quotes on Twitter have been very good and in sync with what we have been saying here, which if course, means Bannon is brilliant!

Bah on the Colts. I think they spent too muich on getting Luck and should have spent more to get a secondary quarterback. Sounds like the defense is a loser this year, too. (Didn't watch the game, am on hurricane watch.)

Jack is Back!

No cell in Sarasota. Can't connect with Capt. Eric.

Jack is Back!

CH,

Yeah but we go to FL for Thanksgiving.

Bubarooni

My better half usually knows that I'm reading JOM when, during another interminable 'Flip or Flop' marathon something comes up about something or the other and after some incessant badgering I respond with 'Wait... what...?'

BTW, my answer is almost always something along the lines of 'No. We've talked about this before and I don't know how to run a backhoe and pour concrete footers.'

been to two actually. the last one was a weird combination of hostility and snobbery and have been marginally attached to the horde ever since. however a member of the horde was heading back to Loudon County and gave me a ride home.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Uh, I've made jokes about forest fires in my vicinity. Heck, I've made jokes about the one that burnt my own property.

Moreover he didn’t say it was a hoax. That was how progs characterized what he said. He said these things tend to underperform the buildup and the media use them for propaganda and ratings.
The first part of what he said struck me as fairly similar to several comments you made during the run-up on this one, JiB, and the second part seems kind of undeniable.

‘I don’t want to hear any more of this “drain the swamp” talk,’” Bannon recalled McConnell saying.

Frau Edith Steingehirn

The Dems are not ever embarrassed. They ran Al Gore and John F'n Kerry. Hillary!, though, tops the Richter scale of embarrassing candidates. She made Crazy Bernie look like a serious statesman, no easy task.

Captain Hate

Think of Pope Francis as a natural disaster

But he's a man made disaster inflicted upon the members by people with an obvious agenda. If it hadn't been Francis it would've been someone similar. JiB probably has a good idea of the nature of the power struggles currently going on so I won't speculate on any of it other than to say something strange happened while Benedict was Pope.

The Guardian: Hillary Clinton: Trump inaugural speech was 'cry from the white nationalist gut

Let's take this apart bit by bit.

Sitting onstage as Trump was sworn in on 20 January was “an out-of-body experience”, Clinton said, recalling that she attended in the hope of presenting a unified front following an ugly and bitter campaign. “I’m a former first lady, and former presidents and first ladies show up”

I don't recall her showing up on Election Night to concede to her followers. I thought she hid in the back and sent out John Podesta.

Clinton continued: “What an opportunity [Trump had] to say, ‘OK, I’m proud of my supporters, but I’m the president of all Americans.’ That’s not what we heard at all.”

“The most important of the mistakes I made was using personal email,” Clinton told CBS of her controversial decision as secretary of state to use a private email server.

First time I recall hearing her say she made a mistake.

“The morning after the election, Bill and I both wore purple. It was a nod to bipartisanship (blue plus red equals purple),” Clinton writes. “The night before, I had hoped to thank the country wearing white – the color of the suffragettes – while standing on a stage cut into the shape of the United States under a vast glass ceiling. Instead, the white suit stayed in the garment bag.”

Just like Hillary did when she sent out Podesta.

Barbara

Porchlight,

You can find addtional, "unedited" segments at the 60 minutes overtime link that I posted above.

Re: the Democrats embarrassment over Hillary, from what I've read they wish she would go away. They put up with her because they thought she would win.

If she hadn't offered the opportunity to hold on to the White House, she would have been in political Siberia. If the Clinton Foundation ever gets any meaningful scrutiny, she will be radioactive.

Via Awesome Local LEO in the Keys...
"Last Post for the day. Maybe for a while. Going into worst tomorrow morning. I'll try an update in a few days.
Stay Safe All
Following the 9/10/17, 6:30 PM update with Monroe County Emergency Management there are two important and clear messages. You can skip some of the details that follow – but please pay close attention to first two items;
1) Resources are on the way! There are a tremendous amount of resources coming to the Keys beginning tomorrow morning. Right now roads and runways are being cleared to allow these resources to arrive by air and by land. It’s all coming as quick as they can mobilize the resources. Keep in mind that right now we are really only 12 hours post a direct hit from a Cat 4 hurricane. Things are happening quickly. Tomorrow morning we will see a lot of things start to happen.
2) Patience. The thing that can complicate the recovery process the most is interrupting the sequence of events that must take place. DO NOT attempt to return to the Keys at this time. Be patient. Let the first responders, emergency medical personnel, FDOT personnel, etc. get in and make the preparations necessary so that the rest of us can return just a little later. Whatever damage has been done (and in many cases it appears to be less than anticipated) it won’t get any worse waiting another couple of days. We all need to wait for the proper instructions for our return. It is not going to be tomorrow (Monday) and probably not Tuesday either. Just wait for the instructions from Monroe County Emergency Management. They are blocking off the 18 mile stretch and Card Sound Road so even if you try to get back you’ll simply have to stop and find lodging in Homestead. Probably not as nice a spot as you are currently in. Be patient.
If you are still reading, here are some additional details regarding what was shared during the conference call;
Key West – For the first time since early this morning City Manager Jim Scholl was on the conference call! His comments were pretty positive and optimistic – flooding less than Wilma, water is an issue (Aqueduct is aware of the problem and will send crews out tomorrow to repair leaks, but need to have emergency medical services available first), crews are being sent out to check and clear US 1 up as far as MM 34 (where it is known there is a significant pole across the road) and another reported washout at MM 29. Key West airport has water on the runway but no apparent damage (this is good news for resources coming by air).
Big Pine / Marathon – Still not on the conference call, but there has been limited communication with Sheriff Ramsey who is at the MHS refuge. The airport there may require more work with debris, but it is a top priority. Marathon and Big Pine appear to be some of the hardest hit areas. No “eyes on” intel from Big Pine at this time.
Layton/Islamorada – Debris reports, but not a lot of significant structural damage. Islamorada reported clearing US 1 from Long Boat Key to Tavernier Creek, but there are a couple of major choke points at this time, including Sea Oats Beach MM 75 (erosion and damage to both lanes – FDOT crew coming in tomorrow).
Water – There appear to be several leaks in the system. According to FKAA they do not appear to be leaks in the main line, but rather in lines that branch off from the main line. This will allow these lines to be shut off while water continues to flow through the system. But, it will take some time to repair. Keep this in mind when you think about getting anxious to return. Let them restore the water supply first.
Electricity – Obviously there are major repairs to be made throughout the system. There are also literally several fleets of trucks waiting to enter Monroe County to make the repairs, but first the roads have to be repaired and cleared so that they can get in to do the work. Again, the fewer unauthorized vehicles there are on the road the quicker this work can be completed.
Medical Services – The first priority is simply to be able to provide trauma services for first responders (e.g. electrical linesmen, water and highway repair, etc.) No set date/time for reopening of the three hospitals though no one is reporting serious damage, but a lot of clean up. Also they are obviously highly dependent on the restoration of water and power services. You can see the importance of the events occurring in proper sequence."
