JimNorCal

Hmm. How to disable italics.
<\i>
Shouldn’t it be angle bracket, back slash, lower case i and closing angle bracket?
Not working for me

DrJ

Off.

anonamom

maybe now?

I hope so.

DrJ

Jim,

You need a forward slash, not a backslash.

anonamom

Forward slash, JimNorCal

JimNorCal

Or fwd slash

JimNorCal

Actually I was trying the correct slash too but preview didn’t show improvement. Oh well.
Thanks

DrJ

Often you need more than one "close" tag. Usually I use four.

No one in modern history's been so relentlessly reamed by media-92% of coverage of @realDonaldTrump is negative-grotesquely unfair&insulting

====================================

I wouuld like to know what accounts for this change in Geraldo's attitude. I agree, of course, but it seems strange that suddenly jr has done this turnaround.

I can even pinpoint it to the second or third day he was in Puerto Rico. He started out covering it like it was another Katrina and then did a 180.

Depp is playing Samuel Ratchet and Branagh will be doing Poirot.

Albert Finney's Poirot is in my mind the best. He's so over the top and funny you underestimate him from the very start until it's too late. I never got David Suchet as an actor. He's cold and obvious and a little dull.

I love Ustinov...but honestly he always seemed wrong for Poirot.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Duda,

Thanks for the info. I agree Finney was the best.

On the 'Vulgar Manliness' of Donald Trump

http://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2017/10/on_the_vulgar_manliness_of_donald_trump.html

the above link reminded be of the old Penraker post -

~ "We are not a Brooks brothers suit; we are a Carhartt jacket." ~

'We Are Vulgar. In The Best Sense of the Word' by Penraker

"The more things change, the more they stay the same: Winston Churchill visited America around the turn of the century and came away convinced that we were vulgar. But he meant it as a compliment:

"Vulgarity is a sign of strength," he wrote, likening America to "a great lusty youth" in a world of "well bred" but "enervated" ladies and gentlemen.

And so here we are, 60 years on, and America is still considered vulgar by Europeans. And they look more enervated than ever. We are simple and simplistic Cowboys, throwing our juvenile weight around. We like direct talk and direct action. We call evil empires evil. We point out the 'axes of evil". And you know what? Vulgar little America is right.

Churchill is still right. Our vulgarity is of a particular kind - we are vulgar in the sense of "Of or associated with the great masses of people; common."

We are common and vulgar because America harnesses more of the energies of its people than any other nation. That broad sweep of energy shows itself in everything we do. We are not sophisticated. We are plain and a bit old-shoe. We are not a Brooks brothers suit; we are a Carhartt jacket." - Penraker (from an old blog I used to read. from 2006 @ Penraker via the Wayback Machine)

But Janet, vulgar people don't have a well creased pant! The horror!

I like that old article better. The American Thinker article spends too much time telling us what the professor said, and not enough time defending us vulgarians.

NYT: Top 2 officers U.S.S. John McCain "quietly removed". Both last name "Sanchez" fwiw. Only one reporter byline and no mention of BOzo or his naval appointees at the helm during other collisions/snafus noted in the article, but not detailed.

Buckeye,

That would Section 936 of IRS Code but it has now expired. Allowed Pharma to build plants in PR and escape federal income tax on their revenue. Every major Pharma built plants there. I think a lot of them are now mothballed.

I woke up and the Yankees still won the game last night. (Yay!)

That was World Series type entertainment. I don’t expect as much for the next games but am prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

As a replay watcher, having it on in the background, I like watching baseball more than hockey on TV. Hockey should be seen live.

DebinGA

PBS aired every Poirot tale Agatha Christie wrote, each with David Suchet as Poirot. It took over 10 yrs. as there are a lot. Afterward there was a Masterpiece "special" with Suchet visiting Christie's home, talking about her life there and earlier, and her vision of the character, which is the one he adopted and I love. Hearing Suchet's naturally deep, melodious voice in other roles is always a shock.

If HW went to AZ, it was probably Wickenberg where Rush went for his rehab. I remember him (?) talking about the sex thing being a big part of that clinic's business. Coincidentally we parked our little bird under the wing of EIB-1 at Deer Valley at that time. Had no idea why it was there until later. First Pick: 2/3rds chance of picking goat. So 2 out of every 3 times the first box picked first will be a goat.

I had never seen a @ScottAdamsSays coffee talk until yesterday. His twittercast on Kaepernick yesterday was fascinating.

Says the issue is the first one he has seen where both sides agree on the goal.

Says Kaepernick screwed up by not having an effective strategy to get there -- which Trump seeming always has.

Says they should teach strategizing in schools, not goals. I see his point.

sbw

I can close a thread better than anyone. :-/

Ralph L

My beef with "Poirot" and "Sherlock" and most TV crime shows is that they center around the detective(s) instead of the crime. Original L&O was the exception 99% of the time. Poirot was better than others, which have a narrative arc of soap opera about the regular cast. Poirot kept to Christie's discrete stories.

Clarice Feldman

I loved the Inspector Morse mysteries.

Morse was a first class pompous ass, which can be a mixed bag to watch.
