About Elmer Fudd's Senate testimony this past Wednesday, I may be to attuned to virtue signaling when it comes from our side, but in response response to Grassley's question regarding Rosenestein's involvment in the Russian bribery case and why Rosenstein did not recuse himself, Sessions reponded that Rosenstein is an honorable man. It reminded me of Marc Antony monologue in Julius Caesar For Brutus is an honorable man;So are they all, all honorable men.

Basically saying that the Mueller investigation was an attempt to stab Trump (Caesar) in the back. However, it has not been successful.
Expect McCabe to be called into Senate Judiciary a week before the Virginia Gubernatorial election to discuss the Russian bribery case and by the way that $600,000 that Macauliffe gave his wife to run for the Virginia state senator seat.

The Budget passed late last night, 51 to 49. We got ZERO Democrat votes with only Rand Paul (he will vote for Tax Cuts) voting against.....

....This now allows for the passage of large scale Tax Cuts (and Reform), which will be the biggest in the history of our country!

When does General Kelly's question 'Is there nothing sacred anymore?' outdoes do you have no sense of decency, sir? remark by Joseph Welch during the McCarthy trials. Or is it all Trump's fault as per GWB.

henry

For the media, only what they see in the mirror is sacred. For the left, only theior power is sacred. That traditional values are not sacred anymore is a victory for them. (Note, in the McCarthy trials the left was under assault).

henry

Nice reading about union membership as right to work kicks in.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

So far on Twitter I have read that Kelly is a monster, that he grew up in South Boston in an Irish Catholic neighborhood which was racist and known for wife-beating, and that he deserves no respect because he has his head up the ass of orange Cheetoh.

This is from an MSNBC reporter, a dem operative, and someone who works at a university(none of whom I follow but were retweeted by others).

These are truly horrible people.

 narcisoyea

He's from southie, no wonder he doesn't suffer fools gladly. Remember MSNBC was ubls favorite and allegedly the north Korean ruling council love morning joke.

I love how G-d has a wicked sense of humor. Ronan Farrow exposes Harvey Weinstein who saved Ronan's supposed biological father, Woody Allen's career after molestation charges are brought against Allen regarding Dylan Farrow.

Two of Woody's earlier movies come to mind. One is the Front in which Woody glorifies the Hollywood screenwriters of the 50s who were blacklisted because of their communist leanings. Talk about changing times in which the conservative leaning writers and actors have been shunned.
I say that in reference to the contrast between General Kelly's question of Is there anything sacred anymore versus Joseph Welch Do you have no sense of Decency, Sir?

Talking about McCarthy trials versus the staged and boring senate hearings that are going on today, the question goes to Woody's "Bananas' of whether the US has become a Banana Republic. Normally you do not prosecute prior administrations for their sins or poor decisions, but when do the crimes and misdemeanors (another Woody film) become beyond the pale that you have to prosecute otherwise you have truly become a banana republic.

Buckeye

Henry, take a look at that last graph in the union membership article.

Suggests that over 4 million people in a state of 5.4 million are state employees???

I think the y-axis legend is incorrect.

Buckeye

I think it is more like 250,000

henry

We receive the daughter's copy of the New Yorker which is mis-addressed to us. I've asked her countless times to change the address, but it still arrives in the mailbox in the woods. Last night I read the Ronan Farrow article. It is scathing and disturbing. Hubby started to read it and didn't finish. It is a disgusting story. henry

Here are more numbers on state employees, with even more bizzare axis labels. Apparently we are down from "55.3 public employees per state resident" to 49.6. (I think they meant per thousand residents). Under this one, it is 286,000 state and local employees (but this skips the UW system entirely). Net, we have too many govt employees and we pay them far too much.

Those comments on Bush's FB page are very strong. I identify with some of them. Although I thought he should speak up during Obama's 8 destructive years, I assumed he was just sticking to the old tradition of not criticizing another President. Ha! Wrong! What a disappointment he has turned out to be.

Looking for documents last night I ran across a file of memorabilia from past campaigns - invitations to both Bush Inaugurals, White House Christmas cards....I used to be so proud of those things. It was all I could do to not toss them in the trash. (Some of them belong to my kids or I probably would have!) This makes me very sad to write this but it's how I feel.

Well what MM says about Kevin Williamson is no doubt true, but as I and others here have pointed out: 1) what is going on has nothing to do with "working class white men" per se, and 2) The very definition of "working class" has been altered to the point that the term amounts to mere sloganeering and shibboleth. Whatever are they talking about? The rest of us out here do know. Other than having some vague feeling they are not talking about the same thing we are, we have not a clue.

Obviously, they are trying to sustain some bizarre narrative, or perhaps sneak in a new one using the same language, where the real issues can be avoided and regular decent, and normal Americans can be slandered and hounded for even bringing these issue up.

This to me is a strange undertaking as I understand it. Why now? How could it possibly work? I truly hope that this is just broad obtuseness on their part--and indeed I think it is.

(But it is interesting that such comes out at the same time that W, Bush feels the need to speak up, isn't it?)

There is a sea change afoot. We do not know what final shape it will take or where it will lead us, but it is hardly due to some disgruntled truckers or some laid off factory workers.

Trump is to a degree a manifestation of, and a rallying point for this change, but he is not the cause of it. Kevin Williamson needs to go look in the mirror.

And, of course, Trump's amazing ability to expose these people for what they truly are is most helpful, and really something to watch. He is better at this than even Reagan was.

We will not go back now, and if he can manage to do 8 years and get even half his agenda out, things will be completely different on the other side of that.

Well the problem for Obama and GWB is that the standards that the uniparty tried to put in place as RSE has so eloquently detailed have met their match with social media. MM: Given my interest in historiography, of course I have read it, but for multiple reasons I cannot accept it. Not at all, in fact.

I do not hold with deterministic views of history, particularly one this "mystical". Additionally, its "principles", if one can call them that, are so amorphous and shallow in definition that one can shoe horn just about and historical timeline into them.

Yes, there are waves of crisis, and, yes, civilization have their peaks and valleys, and certainly each their decline and fall. Yes, these occur across generations. The closer one looks, however, all most all of these tumults are unique in almost every case. It is true that one can abstract some general notion out of them, but these general notions seem to have little use but as food for thought and meditation. There is no "science" of history. While attractive, determinism or the notion of generational cycles are really intellectual vanities.

It is certainly absurd to imagine that "generations" have some sort of inherent "character" due to where they fall in some sort of "cycle of crisis". In fact, these "crises" rarely have much to do with "generations" at all other than the sheer passage of time, and are certainly not resolved by a particular one. Forces can be held in abeyance for centuries, and then burst forth in a blazing fire, a fire that can take a century to put out. Witness the Hundred Years War (a bursting of the contradictions of the whole early and middle Medieval Period), or the path from Napoleon to WW2.

The people behind "the Fourth Turning" know, ironically, not that much about the history they would use make their case, and their knowledge of basic philosophical analysis is is even lower than their history knowledge. I find their thinking shallow and easily debunked.

Man is a crooked timber, but our fate is mostly in our own hands (with the guidance on the Lord, of course). This is what i believe.

All of this is not to say that we are at a moment of great change: here I agree completely. I will say though that it is open ended; we do not know exactly where this is headed. It seems clear to me that we will not go back, but we do not know yet where we are bound.

Again, though Trump appears to deeply understand that something must be done and has obviously given much thought to how to face it, he is not the cause, not even a catalysis. This is not to diminish him in any way. He is a manifestation of something, and that something is not merely "the forgotten mean and women", it is more than that.

Yes, he is a rallying point; yes, he is providing real leadership, but his election is not due to some "shrewd and cynical" reading of a disgruntled constituency. Much more is afoot.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

squaredance,

Thank you for your answer. I am home now so can post a little but more. (Hate posting on an iPhone, which, by the way, I have NOT updated.)

I read the book years ago and would have to go back. Part of what struck me about it was that the people of my family had lived through two turnings and I could identify with many of the subjects he covered.

I agree there is something more than Trump going on here, although I feel his election was a signal, a sign, perhaps a Divine message - depending on how religious or metaphysical one is.

I was expecially struck by Kelly's statement at the press briefing yesterday, because it called back to a time I remembered from my childhood, when people comported themselves with dignity and we didn't have members of Congress who decked themselves out in fake flowers and party-sized cowboy hats, and when Hollywood at least attempted to hold up the virtues of our society instead of tearing it down.

It's always been of interest to me that there are actual religious prophecies about Trump on the internet, inicluding visions from people as far away as South Africa and Australia. I have never seen that type of thing before. I also remarked after the election about how I have never seen supporters self-start their own campaign groups, make their own ads and web sites. Those kids on Reddit saw something.

It's very strange and yet hopeful. We certainly have learned the evil of our opponents, and the duplicity of so many who claimed to be our friends.

Surber does a good job of slamming NRO's Rich Lowry in his link above.

"We know where Rich Lowry is. Still on TV. Still editing National Review. Still writing freelance pieces. Still getting President Trump wrong. No class of losers is paid better and has more job security than these experts on nothing."

Damn straight! Well another useless loser at NRO posted one last night damning Steve Bannon for political inconsequentiality---can you guess who?

Jonah Goldberg. Self-Anointed Rainmaker Steve Bannon Dances Only During Cloudbursts

Jonah Goldberg, who did everything he could to help Hillary Clinton become President, hammers Steve Bannon for Bannon's efforts to try to oust RINO's and replace them with Conservatives, even if that may cost Repubs some House and Senate seats.

And then Jonah goes to the low blow of suggesting that Steve Bannon has betrayed Andrew Breitbart by taking over the Creation that Andrew built and somehow claiming credit for it and misusing it for personal aggrandizement:

Fired White House aide Steve Bannon is a quintessential Ferris Bueller. My late friend Andrew Breitbart created the media empire that regrettably still bears his name. When he died, Bannon took over the parade Andrew launched...It’s understandable that Bannon and his employees at Breitbart would want to perpetuate the myth of Bannon’s rainmaking skills. They’re in the business of monetizing anger at Washington and the GOP “establishment.”

Think about that.

If, in Woody Allen fashion, we were able to pull not Marshall Mcluhan out of the line to address Jonah but instead we could pull out Andrew Breitbart, do you think Andrew Breitbart would criticize Bannon for his efforts to Elect Trump and fight the good Cultural Fight, or do you think Andrew would slap Jonah for trying to elect Hillary and doing everything in his power to defeat Trump?

That's a no brainer.

And if instead we pulled up William F Buckley out of the line, what do you think Buckley would say to Jonah about the things Jonah and French and Williamson and JPod and Lowry have done to destroy his creation, National review?

Geebus! The blinders on these self righteous NRO #NeverTrump shitheads are amazing.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Buckeye,

I recommend going back and watching old interviews with him on Oprah Winfrey and his testimony before that Senate Oversight Committee for UN building renovations.

I think he has thought about the presidency for at least 20 years, maybe longer. One of his tenets in his book is that TIMING is important in any project. I happen to think he was waiting for a time when he knew he could win and when things had gotten so bad that people would listen to him.

He was right.

Marlene is exactly right! (as usual).

Back just now to the land of the Beltway, having left Nantucket last week.

Both twins now are walking and each has two or three words at 11 months. Baby Max, no longer a baby but a full fledged "Threenager" (YL's term fits) truly has his hands full now. I'm gonna need more gates in the Nantucket House next summer!

By the time I left the island I was not liking my frequent fights with my friends here who would seemingly never admit any error by Trump or pass up any opportunity to defend the mystery of Jeff Sessions. I tired of being told that a drop of water in a tall glass was "half full". So when we got to YL's I decided not to ask for the WiFi Password, rather I would lurk here with my phone but it is too hard to post on the damn thing so I just watched. I think I had become so prolific with my glass-is-half-empty arguments with the cheerleaders that a time out to see if mine was the only voice coming from that corner or not would be useful.

Happily plenty of voices rose to take my place so that was good to see.

There was one post in the last week that really did upset me. IIRC, it was Derwil (?) who opined that since charges brought by Sessions against any of the blatant crimes from the Age of Obama would be brought in DC, before a DC jury, who would never ever convict an Obama acolyte and therefore Sessions is not sleeping, rather he is smart to not charge any of them because an acquittal would do more damage than the risk was worth.

If that is true, then it is already over for us and the Ledge is not big enough for all of us. The reason of course is that that situation will always exist and by giving them a pass now - by the DoJ run by people who promised to drain the swamp and jail offenders - means that from this point on no crime by Uniparty members in good standing inside the Beltway will ever be subjected to the same Law which rules the rest of us. And that will now apply not just to the ring leaders but to their foot soldiers in the agencies too.

That did not improve my mood, and remains central to my concerns about momentum and messaging.

All that said, I am happy to be back and thank Iggy and Buckeye for noting my absence.

Kevin Williamson sees the world through cartoon characters. Everyone still iving in small towns is part of the white underclass. Sean Hannity, Irish Catholic guy, only likes country western music (which Williamson detests because it reminds him of his West Texas roots) because he's a phony who is sucking up to the rubes.

That is how he sees Trump, too. He's a cartoon character he's created in his mind, so nothing good will ever come from him.

I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of people in the public eye who have severe mental problems. Besides almost the entirety of Hollywood, a fair number populate the realm of the professional conservatives, not to mention, of course, a good chunk of the left.

This one has really stood the test of time. Here's just one line that resonates. OK, not perhaps with maryrose :) :)

" ... overall, the Republican Party at any and every level has shown it does not provide fertile soil for any return to republican values as much as it does a steady harvest of go-along-to-get-along Paul Ryans, John Kasichs, and Jeb Bushes."

Did I miss seeing if anybody yesterday linked to the Walter Williams story about 1.8M of us among the 325M in the country are now paying 70% of income taxes paid to the Federal Government, vs 0% (rounding) from half of the 325M? You all know where I think THAT will end up.

OL, no problem. They are going to put a payroll tax on robots.

Per the sidebar, Kelly's empty barrel speech was wrong in one detail. She wasn't bragging about getting the money, she was bragging about her role about getting the place named quickly enough.

Old Lurker,

I agree with Derwill but maybe you didn't see my post where they need to look for crimes committed in venues outside of DC, New York, or LA.

That is where Harvey Weinstein comes in, as well as the Russian Uranium One deal. Harvey is a bragger and a bully, and was also one of Clinton's biggest bundlers of campaign donations. I also believe he has orchestrated much of the lock-step Trump hatred in Hollywood, which is amazing since I have turned up pictures of him in all sorts of cameos in Hollywood, including one of him sitting next to Will Smith on the set of Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

What made all those stars, many of whom had gone to his parties and had him in their own homes, suddenly decide he was beyond the Pale? I find that quite curious.

We will just have to wait and see what happens. None of us can control whatever is going on at DOJ or what the FBI investigates. I am very pleased to see that The Hlll seems to be transforming itself into an investigative paper.

And I am VERY glad to see you back!

Old Lurker

Saw that, Henry!

Fixed.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I should clarify that the cameos were of Donald Trump in Hollywood.
