To be fair, Green Bay without Rodgers is worse than any team except the Bears. (I'm still not sure how the Bears out sucked the Pack last week).

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Janet,

AMong the people who were opposed to lifting the ban were Tammy Bruce, James Wood, Greta van Sustern and Laura Ingraham.

Not exactly enemies.

MY concern is that the liftig of the ban would be ineffective, since one would have to depend on the African governments to both spread the word AND be fair about the money.

The idea is to maike the animals more valuable alive than slaughtered by poachers.

In addition, the Chinese are over their offering premium prices for things like ivory tusks and rhinoceros horns. I don't think lifting the ban on imports to the US would stop that.

Jack is Back!

Finally, back by Jitney from the Giants v. Chiefs game which may have been the most boring game I have ever sat through. There were no sacks by either team. No hits out of their shoes. More dropped passes than those caught. One touchdown by the Giants but a missed extra point which would have negated going into OT. No runs over 8 yards from what I could see.

Also, for the record, I did not see any cars or RV's or Limos with Mississippi plates. To me it is laughable that people in Mississippi would rather watch an Eli Manning game instead of the Saints. They're right next door.

GUS

GUS

If harvesting the animal is LEGAL in the COUNTRY that the animal is harvested in....PERIOD.

exdemocrat

they serve elephant steaks at Trump tower, Ig?

henry

Janet, I agree with the approach. However the extreme level of corruption in most of Africa mean any money flow is stolen, not put into conservation.

Captain Hate

The city is Columbus, Ohio.

That's more Buckeye's problem than mine. Amazing to give money to an unindicted terrorist front group after the attack at OSU. Slow motion suicide.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

--The idea is to maike the animals more valuable alive than slaughtered by poachers.--

Their greatest value by far is as trophies where the fees for an elephant are often in the $50,000 range.
And since the elephants in parks are the only ones the tourists ever pay to see and are not hunted, stopping trophy hunting makes most elephants less valuable, not more.
Trophy fees enable anti-poaching efforts.
He's wrong on every aspect of this and his decision is bad for elephants because he's using sentimental rather than scientific or even good sense reasoning.

 narcisoyea

Just like where all that money for dismantling Russian nukes go to, I started to consider that with the peacekeeper and other films.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

That's just not accurate, henry.
Certainly some is stolen, but whatever funds the game departments get is from trophy fees.
Moreover the professional hunters guiding the trophy hunts are often themselves the front line in game management and anti-poaching efforts, so the animals lose on both ends of the deal.

Janet 🚬

Anyway...I guess it doesn't matter.
Don't let Africans make money & manage their natural resources.

We can all watch emotional TV shows about elephants & feel good.
We're not in poverty. We don't have herds of elephants near us.
No legal way to cull the herds?...no problem for us!

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

And additionally hunting groups like SCI pour millions into private conservation efforts that are not surprisingly less well funded if no one can hunt.

Jack is Back!

Trophy hunting pachyderms is not the problem. The problem is the ivory poachers and sellers. Shut down China and its crazy zeal for it and you will protect more Elephants than the affluent hunter who wants a head over his mantle.

Rhinos disappear at a faster rate since their horns are medicinal to the Chinese. Another reason to penalize the Chinese to stop that trade. Don't know how but making them have to wrestle one to get the horn may work.

henry

Ignatz, yes the trophy guides get property rights from their share of trophy fees. Good point. I forgot that part.

It resembles that Christopher rich novel I've referred to on various occassuons

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

One other factor is many private landowners get large fees by leasing out hunting concessions.
No hunting means the animals become a dead loss and add no value to the landowner's property.

Does sentimentality ever not harm the entity the sentimentality is directed at?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

We have a lot of people in this country who actively oppose trophy hunting because they love wildlife. I have one living here in my house.

While I understand the principal behind this ban, it apparently hasn't worked, due to the Chinese market and non-supervision of poachers outside the parks.

I personally am not a hunter, since I was indoctrinated at an early age by Bambi and Thumper. It's not that I oppose others hunting; I just couldn't pull the trigger myself.

The internet is full of these animal rights sites, with all sorts of horrible tales about hunting. If you guys don't know this, do a search.

As I said before, this is an issue which I believe was pushed up the chain by some "Resist" person in Interior. It is not a high priority decision, but SUDDENLY it is a Cause and it is drawing in many of President Trump's allies.

This isn't about science or even preserving the elephant herds. It's about creating an emotional issue to weaken the President and split off some of his supporters.

This is one of those unexpected hot-button issues that can bring down a presidency, and I am not kidding. Those of you who think he is showing weakness are completely wrong.

In addition, his sons have been photographed with trophy animals (though not elephants) and this only adds to the problem. My daughter, who is their age, actually asked me today why he didn't stop them from hunting. Seriously. I pointed out to her she wouldn't like me ordering her around, so that stopped that line of attack, but there will be a lot of people who will think he is simply doing this for his sons.

I hope he can figure out a way to both stop the poaching and avoid lifting the ban. I don't know the answer, but once again, I am telling you guys this isn't something to be taken lightly.

Comanche Voter

Not that I care about Eli Manning---he can go to Hell in a handbasket as far as I'm concerned (I was a Charger's fan still ticked off at Eli and his dad Archie Manning).

That said I'm no longer watching the NFL anyway. They can broadcast in Zimbabwe as far as I'm concerned--makes no difference to me.

Jack is Back!

Yeah, hunting is an economic benefit, blah, blah, but poaching is what is killing off the tusk wearers. And its like asking a tribal relative who is a warden to stop it.

I have a first hand experience with it unfortunately.

Buckeye

That's more Buckeye's problem than mine. Amazing to give money to an unindicted terrorist front group after the attack at OSU. Slow motion suicide.

Right after 43 invaded Iraq, I remember telling MT over coffee that I thought it was a bad idea, political suicide.

In retrospect, I was underestmating the magnitude of the risk. We have been slowly committing a much broader kind of suicide.

The influx of refugees, as a consequence of our "nation building", is straining the social safety nets in a way no one predicted. Now the politicians are exploiting the mounting crisis to consolidate a voting block, and doing it with our money.

This will blow up in ways they can't anticipate nor prepare for, it'll be ugly for sure.

To paraphrase the Dilbert merchant: Bambi feels = strong persuasion. Economics of hunting vs tragedy of the commons for wildlife preservation = too complicated. James D.

Ig, I can't speak for MM, but I don't think that's what she's saying.

I agree with her on this - its not a rational issue, but it is a dangerous one for President Trump. Emotional, ignorance-fueled, easily visualized things like this absolutely can wreck a presidency.

Catsmeat

Dr. Weevil--welcome! as a daughter of a classicist (Chicago), may I offer the very friendly advice of not holding the JOM denizens to a standard beyond that of almost all (I also speak as a committed pedant--but truly it doesn't pay). Welcome, surely, though.

Jack is Back!

Buck,

Surprisingly, I agree with you but once we committed bodies I was totally committed, if anything to bring it to a quick end with minimun loss or our lives. That concept of fealty was unappreciated by my Belgium relatives. They couldn't understand how you can oppose a decision but once its made support the people who have to carry it out.

It is a conundrum and thank God I chose the right side.

That said, one thing it did is bring this was our current situation of having to face now instead of later the continuation of Islamist dominantion philosophy. it was always on the agenda but we had to confront it earlier.

Now Mattis and his strategy has basically taken ISIS out of Iraq (fuck Syria, that's Putin's problem) and we have a new Israeli-Saudi alliance against Iran. Think we could have got that under Zippy?

The World is changing and in the right orbit.

GUS

So the deer prefers wolves, coyotes, or Chevrolets to having it's numbers managed by LIBERALS????

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Ignatz, GUS,

I DO NOT OPPOSE HUNTING!!!

What I am saying is that there are a lot of people who oppose TROPHY hunting, particularly elephants.

I understand about culling herds. I understand about the economic benefit.

How is it that I can write a long explanation about why this is a perilous issue and all I get is accusations that I oppose hunting or that the NRA will get mad.

I am pretty irritated that you guys aren't thinking strategically. Are you willing to have Trump lose the midterms or the 2020 race because of this issue?

GUS

I "legally" harvested 3 deer this year. One relatively small doe during BOW season. 2 bucks, this very weekend, as my pal and I both TAGGED a buck. What did we do that is in any way OBJECTIONABLE to COMMIE LIBTARD fukwits?
Also, all of this CARNAGE, required 2 bullets.
Both FRAZIER and ALI, were dispatched INSTANTANEOUSLY. Neither Buck, ran one foot.

jimmyk

Catsmeat, I LOLed at Dr Weevil's correction, which I think was intended wryly to point out that "Joan, instead of watching football I stripped and lubricated all my weapons" might suggest that henry lubricated his weapons in the buff. And if "lubricated his weapons" is interpreted, um, metaphorically, it gets worse.

henry

Gus, be sure to mount the heads in a trophy hall. Libs live for that.

henry

Jimmyk, you caught my ambiguity perfectly. For literalists, I was clothed. The several weapons of diverse caliber and type were stripped, cleaned, and oiled.

Catsmeat

Yes, jimmyk, that is one of the perhaps avoidable issues of vagrant syntax! I thought it was funny too.

Catsmeat

Also, Joan, re what you wrote heartfeltedly a bit back, I entirely agree--entirely.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

James D., Jack,

Thanks for understanding me. My dad and grandad hunted all their lives. I don't oppose it at all. I don't support people who do, but this elephant thing has gotten traction and it is very dangerous to the President.

Greta van Sustern is tweeting about it right now, and is re-tweeting every comment that agrees with her, like "The only way elephants should be hunted is with a camera."

James Woods has done numerous tweets opposing lifting the ban.

I surmise that some wildlife group has convinced them to oppose this.

It's very emotional, and you cannot argue about this with the comments I have seen here.

Somebody like George Bush would have simply signed the lifting of the ban withut explanation and would have been taken unaware when the avalanche of attacks followed (as in Katrina).

President Trump is fortunately far smarter and understands persuasion. And you are right; Bambi is easier to portray that a balance sheet for a country.

Jack is also right when he said we need better persuasion methods.

Hey, Mitch! Take a hint!

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

MM, I'm not saying you oppose hunting. You have made clear you don't.
I'm saying doing the right thing is doing the right thing.
If Trump has the economy chugging no one other than PETA fanatics will care.
If he doesn't have it chugging, saving Dumbo from some guy's wall will not save the GOP.
Moreover there are a lot more NRA types in his base who will get slapped in the face if he does the wrong thing than there are PETA types who will oppose him if he does the right thing. Most already hate him.

Rocco

Janet, thank you for posting that article. Spot on!

Ignatz,

How do YOU know what the right thing is?

How many NRA people go big game hunting in Africa? I doubt very many, since it's extremely exoensive.

On the other hand, the elephant lovers are not confined to PETA. This is a mainstream issue fueled by emotion, which is the ultimate persuader.

The GOAL is to save the elephant population, which is why the ban was instituted to begin with. It isn't about gun rights or PETA's preferences.

It's a hot-button issue which is being promoted by celebrities who are TRUMP SUPPORTERS.

I am talking about handling this dangerous issue wisely. If you want him to take a stand on this, fine. Are you willing to bet his presidency on it? That is how dangerous this is.

I remember bringing mail to an inmate in our PC Unit who had made the front page of the Lowell Sun with a picture of him hitting his dog with a 2x4. This PoS would get a couple of dozen hate letters a day from people all over the world.

Rocco ~ There is something about animals that are defenseless and voiceless that triggers a very strong, very emotional reaction. I see it often in my volunteer position with a hound rescue group. Many of our members have a visceral hatred of all hunters because *some* hunters treat their dogs like trash to be thrown away at the end of the season.

It matters not that some hunters help rescue dogs and most are responsible - they have a hatred of hunters that is beyond reason.

For that reason, I agree that this may unleash an unnecessary avalanche of hatred toward President Trump. Best to be as wise as serpents and as harmless as doves.

mad jack
