Navy giving ND fits. Just got a turnover chain from Miami via FedEx:)

Gaza border crossing reopened? Hello, Trump and his visit to Saudi Arabia, the actions by the Crown Prince (Hamas no money) and the Arab Enlightment post-Zippy.

Beasts of England

I don't know him well enough to ask, but I had the same thought about that fence, JiB.

henry - I'm not sure if he mentions it on the site or not, but he also has some elk and other exotic (for the area, anyway) animals on property. He brings in people from around the world... I can do without a fenced hunt, but I'd love to wrangle one of those lunker bass!

From ExDem's 12:05 link about Apple's Black female Diversity Chief being fired for outrageous comments like this one:

“There can be 12 white, blue-eyed, blond men in a room and they’re going to be diverse too because they’re going to bring a different life experience and life perspective to the conversation,” the inaugural diversity chief said.

“Diversity is the human experience,” she said, according to Quartz. “I get a little bit frustrated when diversity or the term diversity is tagged to the people of color, or the women, or the LGBT.

That's the most heretical statement I've heard since Galileo said the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Getting any weather your way yet? Supposed to get 50mph winds here.

"natural predators have been eliminated"

Well we are a little bit different up here, but just as a reminder: Nearly 4 times more bears were shot dead this year in Anchorage than in 2016

So far in 2017, 34 bears have been shot to death in the Municipality of Anchorage...

Jack is Back!

I still think Trump made a mistake lobbying for the release of the 2 UCLA players in China. Why? Because of big mouth LaVar Ball, a nobody NBA player when he sat on the bench.

I hope that Law Prof from Jim Nor Cal's excellent 12:40 link is added to Trump's list of potential Supreme Court Justices!

henry

Beasts, there is a guy with deer & elk by the Bong Rec area. He sells steaks. Tasty venison and elk steaks. no fenced hunting though. I agree that is weird.

Skoot

Oh my goodness. Malcolm Young has died. May he rest in peace.

glenda

Are there no "wimen 'z" hunters ( or sharp-shooters or packers /s ) here?

It's a requirement when you're born TEXAN ! 😉

Web sleuths find stash of US military surveillance folders containing BILLIONS of Facebook posts about Trump, ISIS and foreign politicians

The files were being stored on three Amazon Web Services S3 buckets
They contained posts and comments gathered from Asia and the Middle East
Some were written in Canada and the US but had still been saved by officials
They contained references to Donald Trump, ISIS and foreign politicians
The files were gathered by CentCom, the US Central Command in Florida
Others were gathered by Pacom, the US Pacific Command in Hawaii
They were found by cyber security firm UpGuard which downloaded them in full
An internal security breach known as misconfiguration meant they were visible
CentCom said none of the information was sensitive but would not say why it was being gathered
They have added 'additional security measures' to stop anyone else from discovering similar files, they said

Glenda, WI now allows hunter pink as well as orange to encourage women hunters. (To be honest, the women shooters I know laugh at that too).

Another Dem gets convicted of Fraud. She was a neighboring congresswoman and probably the dumbest most incoherent person I have ever heard. Used to listen to her on WOR in the morning when I was full time in Florida. RG knows more about her. Good riddance. Throw the book at her.

White oak acorns are the whitetail's favorite food source and when I scout, I look for those rounded lobes of a white oak leaf on the ground. Oak leaves with pointed lobes are from black oak.

Every time I use my iPad I get mad at Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.

Miss M,

We are now getting an Apple message on our company iPads to update our iPads to fix problems with the latest IOS 11 load, but the Company advises us to not install the new "fix" because they don't trust it to not screw something else up, so we are told to ignore the "fix' until they study it:)

daddy

Important Question?

Which is your favorite or preferred cough drops?

I think I like Halls the least. I probably prefer the Ricola sugar free Lemon's the best, and barring those, Fisherman's Friend, original or Lemon. Haven't tried Luden's or Smith Brothers for years.

Open to Inputs, but I'm about ready to hustle down to the Drug Store to hunt for a large bag. I am willing to experiment.

Jack is Back!

daddy,

Ever since I have installed the new IOS 11 fix, my iPhone takes forever to change screens, battery life is much worse and it lags on the WiFi. POS upgrade. Don't do it.

Navy making ND look like the least likely team to succeed and make the playoffs. Joke.

Marlene

Good afternoon! The Amish in Maine are allowed to wear red hunting gear because blaze orange is too flashy.
We drove down to NH for Thanksgiving for many years (during the 1980s) when the daughter was young to spend the week with my parents. We followed many pick-ups with their bounties from Maine (Christmas trees and deer) down I-95 South.

jimmyk

the Company advises us to not install the new "fix"

The problem is that it will install automatically if you have it plugged in overnight, or at least that seems to be the threat.

Frau Pfeifen

His demands are shameful. Mr. Goodell never read Grimm's "The Fisherman and his Wife."

Free James D!

I agree with JiB - stay away from ios11. Battery life is definitely worse.

Jack is Back!

jimmyk,

Has to be turned off also, not just plugged in.

Rocco

Marlene, the law here says that you must leave part of the animal exposed when transporting UNTIL you have it checked in at a weigh station. After that, an ethical hunter would cover it with a tarp keeping those Christmas letters to Santa in mind.

henry

Rocco, we can register on the spot via cell phone. Convenient. A tarp will blow off the deer on the drive home if you don't have a pickup.

Rocco

LOL Frau...I guess we could say she's a whitetail too! Or did I just enter the Franken zone?

daddy

POS upgrade. Don't do it.

Thanks for the good advice, JiB. I won't:)

jimmyk

I followed someone's advice here and changed some settings, and the battery life seems not so bad. I think I turned off "background app refresh," and maybe something about iCloud.

jimmyk

Has to be turned off also, not just plugged in.

Maybe, but mine got updated to 11.0.3 without knowingly turning it off. Plus, Apple nags you constantly.

daddy

The problem is that it will install automatically if you have it plugged in overnight, or at least that seems to be the threat.

JimmyK,

For us it is automatically entered into the machine ready to install, and has that Red (update) ball telling us to install it, but it will not auto install for us. Instead, every time you power the damn thing up it appears in the middle of the screen like a pop-up ad asking us to install it with a prompt, and you have to select saying install or cancel to continue to whatever screen you need to view.. It is a drag having that keep popping up every time we power up the screen, but oh well.

Texas Liberty Gal

I had already done the background refresh before I did the upgrade and now the battery life is worse. Haven't heard about iCloud issue. Hope they do another upgrade to fix it.

Marlene

Rocco,I've lost count of the deer and moose I've seen on the back of pick-ups in Maine. :)
Do you hunt in northern NH or Maine?

glenda

Pink hats and vests?? That is so PC, henry 😂

I haven't hunted white-tailed deer, wild pigs, black butt antelope, wild turkey, quail, on our place for years..
We're traditional wildlife/land manager/conservationists hunters. Cull the herds, they flourish and survive. Husband uses a tag, almost every year and we consume and share. Tex-Mex tamales are the best with venison/pork mix!! You have not eaten chicken fried steak, right, without it being back-strap! And the sausage is better than any unknown origin store-bought!
Everyone who hunts with him...follows the rules. The best part is the campfire at night, under the clear, crisp Texas sky..sharing stories of the "big rack" (no, not that one..antlers😂) that got away!

Rocco

henry, that is convenient, nice! I was taught that the first thing to do when you shoot a deer is to fill out the deer tag and pin it somewhere on the animal. So I pinned it to the ear with a big safety pin, rolled the ear up with the tag inside it for safe keeping, and then tied the ear tight to the head. But while dragging the deer out of the woods, the tag was lost somewhere along the way. Now I wait until I get to my vehicle to attach the tag to the deer.

I have in the past transported them in the trunk with the hood of the trunk closed as much as possible.

Marlene

The weigh station in our town in northern Main was on the main street. The busiest place in town this time of year!

henry

TLG, it resets your defaults to background update to ICloud. So it is full time max bandwidth on sending everything to Apple HQ for their amusement. Go into settings and turn it off, unless you want your stuff backed up on Apple owned data centers, or really need stuff shared across your Apple devices. (It hits phones, pads and Macs equally). I backup to alternate devices myself... I do not agree with Apple getting my pics (plus IZp rights) and selling them on as stock photos, etc for other data to allow Apple to charge more for ads I don't want to see. /rant

Extraneus

I exited the Apple ecosystem a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier with my new a Samsung Note 8. Much more customizable than an iPhone. Apps aren't restricted to the Google site, and can be found elsewhere. 64G internal storage and can take a 256G micro SD card, and store any files there easily. Very cool interface, and even that can be modified by installing so-called "launcher" apps.

The only thing it can't do that I've found highly irritating is count stairs. Except for that, it's great.

daddy

We will have to agree to disagree, ExtD. I just can't get past Preity's...dimples:)

Captain Hate

Which is your favorite or preferred cough drops?

Original Ricolas. I used to get the most horrendous barking coughs and they'd be the only thing that would cut it. Finally my doctor put me on fluticasone spray and Xertek: end of problem. Except I still get a cold every year or two including now. The night before last I was up most of the night with a persistent cough. Then last night I remembered I had some old Ricolas; took one and slept like a baby.

Extraneus

I guess "couldn't be happier" and "highly irritated" aren't quite logical. Apple counted stairs and steps separately since at least iPhone 6. Samsung, years later, still can't count stairs. I'm guessing they must have a lower-grade accellerometer.

daddy

No surprise this: Jeff Flake Caught on Live Mic Saying GOP Is ‘Toast’ Under Leadership of Moore, Trump

He ought to be a guest speaker at that George Soros shindig with Pelosi in California, and just say it out loud.

daddy

"cough cough" Thanks, "cough", Capt!

Rocco

Marlene, I keep it local and mostly bow hunt. Sometimes I never see another hunter during bow season and I like that. That deer I passed up was in Johnny Appleseed's back yard. (well, his birth site)

https://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=32789

But mother nature gave those deer up north the genes to survive those severe winters. They're huge!

Another Bob

(Hope this works...)

Miss Marple, you're iPad, right? If so, build a bookmark from the text below, name it Bottom of Page or something and put it on the favorites bar. All you'll have to do is touch it to take you to the bottom of any page.

javascript:scroll(0,document.getElementsByTagName(%20%22body%22)%5B0%5D.scrollHeight);

Another Bob

In two lines to avoid the truncation here, but make it one line when you make the bookmark.

Jane - not "in"

Charles Manson died too and no one (but me) noticed. That's about the best tribute he could have been given.

Texas Liberty Gal

Henry - I have the iphone 6, mini ipad 2 and a mac. Have a sideline business where I post a lot of pics so its very convenient to have all 3 devices sync with each other. Don't know tht I have any alternate devices to back up to. Just noticed there is an 11.1.2 upgrade so am doing that now and hope it improves my battery life. The battery life on my mini iPad is the worst. It will drain to 0% w/o my ever using it. Am going to make a date with the genus bar for that problem. Its less then a year old.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Another Bob,

Thank you! I am on my iPad when traveling or when I decide to post while in bed. I have avoided using it that much because of that problem. I will copy and use that.

Captain Hate, you might want to use this, too!

Jack is Back!

What I like about the Big 12 Conference is how they stress defense.

Navy was valiant but just not enough. We're going to Philly in a couple of weeks for The Game. Army is tough this year. Should be very competitive game since I don't think Army could have done as well against the Irish.

Dan Scavino of the White House has posted a video at this link which shows close-ups of the border wall prototypes.

henry

TLG, I have a similar device set, I back up to my Mac. Pics I also back up to my work PC (and rotating thumb drives). My iPad 2 drains quickly as it is, and loads pages slowly on the browser. I have considered getting a new iPad, but figure the slowest sites are ad heavy so it saves me from looking at them. at work, my PC is on a standard backup schedule with our inhouse servers. Cloud services get backup by our platform vendors ( we test often).

The net is data transfer over wifi eats battery. Minimize it. Newer devices use less power, but we load more work on them. Backup elsewhere is good provided you can trust the custodian.

Frau Festina Lente

Jane, I cannot find confirmation about Manson. It could be that even Death does not want him.

Another Bob

Don't thank me until it works... ;)

henry

JiB. "The Game" was played this afternoon. "The Army Navy Game" is its own awesomeness.

Porchlight

This movie is a particular favorite of mine because so much of it reflects the Christmases of my childhood, including the decor, the Santaland, the next door neighbor's dogs, etc.

Thanks for this comment, MM. A Christmas Story is easily in my top five favorites, maybe number one, and I say that as a cinema studies minor, as well as a Christmas-loving American.

I consider it to be a near-perfect movie.

RIP, Bob Clark (the director) and son. They were killed in a head-on collision by an illegal. RIP, Darren McGavin.

henry,

The first college game ever played was November 6, 1869 between Rutgers and New Jersey (aka Princeton). Score was 6-4 Rutgers. My family supplied the first ball ever used for Collegiate football, The Lillywhite Model J, a revamped Rugby ball. Came all the way over the pond from London.

Back then, they actually played 10 games in one. Each time a team scored they were awarded one point thus the score.

No pads, no helmets, no studded shoes or boots, just blood and gore.

henry

JiB, nice change of subject. ;)

I was told the first college soccer game was Swarthmore vs Princeton. Also before my time.

Deer at processor/butcher.
Henry did you get a pic?

henry

Gus, a pic of what?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Porchlight,

When I say that reflects the Christmas of my childhood, I am serious. My dad was a furnace repairman and was always banging on ours.

The people on the other side of the lane from us (approximately 3.5 miles from the center of Indianapolis) had not only dogs like the Bumpases but goats and donkeys, which periodically would get loose.

To go see Santa you went downtown to the L.S. Ayres department store and rode a train through Santaland which was decotated with ice covered trees, fake snow, and giant candy canes. (You didn't go down a slide, though.)

Every year we would put up the real cut tree and every yeat the lights would pop and short, once blowing a fuse. My dad would always cuss about it.

In those days, when you went downtown there were actual Salvation Army bands on the street. Shop windows in the downtown stores were decorated with Christmas themed story presentations, not merchandise.

All the schools had Christmas programs. With religious music, no less. My school always presented the program the last day of school before vacation, and by tradition the program ended with "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." To this very day when I hear that carol I feel like I am leaving on vacation.

We also opened our gifts Christmas morning, not Christmas Eve. As the oldest of 5 and all girls until my baby brother was born at the last, I got both an electric train one year and a mechanical robot that shot missiles the next. I never owned a doll as I had a constant supply of new babies to take care of to help my mother.

Davod,

I'm aware of the Chinese buying Opera, but I'm not sure what that really means. The basic software is so stable, I doubt it get much tweaking. On the other hand, I can see them sending the code back home to make Chine market versions and/or getting the Norskies to do better quality coding for other apps.

daddy,

I have been buying throat lozenges by the case for a low grade problem that seems perennial. My fave is Halls 'Triple Soothing Action' in Winter Menthol sugar free. It shows 4 out of 5 on their strength scale.

Extraneus

I liked Opera because it uses the same open-source as Android/Chrome (and extensions) yet doesn't send your info to Google, but I ran into a problem with a website I go to fairly often, so I ended up back on Chrome, at least for now.

Porchlight

MM, my dad's Fargo childhood was very similar! The dad reminds me of my grandpa.

We have a framed piece of the original ochre siding from the house where the movie was filmed. :)

Davod

MT. Opera owned by a Norwegian company sounds independent. Opera owned by a Chinese company just doesn't have the same feeling.

Manuel Transmission

Roger, that Davod.

BTW Opera was never particularly good at going to transaction sites like your bank. Most of those sites were tuned to Windoze Exploder and Opera was never interested in playing that game. I jump over to Chrome, if I need that functionality.

Gentlejim

If Apple would redo their browser so you didn't have to scroll all the way through every damn time you refreshed the page, it would be of immense benefit. Every time I use my iPad I get mad at Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.

MM,
You can always just tap the date/time stamp at the end of a post instead of refreshing. That should refresh the page and leave you in the same vicinity on the thread.

Manuel Transmission

Gentlejim,
That's my standard mode when I'm on my phone, which is 90% of the time.
