Buford Gooch

And, off we go.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Old Lurker,

Regarding the questions about where the Clintons got all of that money, I still remember Eric Trump asking this question during an interview during the convention:

"What goods or services did the Clintons provide for the money they received?"

I always though that was a good question. The answer, of course, was that they were selling their future influence. Hiding it in plain sight, as they say.

Captain Hate

Ol' Yeller and Tammy have made that point also.

-peter

Boston College plays the NC State Wolfpack today. I know. big deal. A win for the Eagles could mean a trip to a minor bowl game.

Old Lurker

" was that they were selling their future influence. "

And Uranium. And access to classified documents. And access to DNC inside communication. And what else?

-peter

can't keep up, but Cap'n said something very clever on the last thread.

Also, if you want to see something gross google images of Takei on the Howard Stern show

OL - technology "waivers" such as Clinton's Loral episode.

"There was absolutely nothing done to transfer any technology inappropriately to the Chinese as a result of this decision," Clinton said. "I believe it was in the national interest and I can assure you it was handled in the routine course of business, consistent with the 10-year-old policy."

Whose national interest?

Happy Veterans Day! Thank you to all who served.

James D.

this country has a much better military than its political class deserves.

Our political class has been doing everything in its power to bring the military down to its level. With great success, unfortunately.

derwill

The thing that gets me is how stupidly short-sighted the GOPe is being re Moore. If a mere accusation, sans proof, is all it should take to force a candidate to withdraw, doesn't it occur to them that the same tactic could be used against them by the MSM the next time they're up for re-election?

Or pundit guys like Jonah and Kristol--lets have some women accuse them of sexual whatever, and see how long their nice little TV gigs last last.

Heck, some of them probably have a few sexual skeletons hiding in their closet. I would believe it of Kristol in a NY minute. He looks the part. And Paul That's Not Who We Are Ryan? Look how sanctimonious he was over the pussy tape. Just screams guilty conscious, amirite?

Porchlight

Haven't been able to catch up here for awhile.

I believe the Moore accusations to be a monumental put up job BUT without further confirmation I can't trust that tweet claiming the WaPo reporter offered $1000 in exchange for accusations. I would be careful about that claim unless/until the DA confirms existence of a recorded conversation.

I'm heartened to see Moore fighting back with a defamation suit. I hope WaPo and the accusers and the other alleged "sources" all have to answer many hard questions under oath. I realize this won't happen in time for the election but it must be followed through.

The good news: man on the street piece by an ABC affiliate shows Alabama voters are not buying this BS at all.

Everything they're doing is shortsighted, derwill. Obstructing the agenda they campaigned on is suicidal. One wonders if there's something they fear more than they fear losing.

Sums it up very well, OL.

Frau Festina Lente

Anyone heard of this distinguished veteran who is running for Senate in Michigan? John James is up against the infamous Debbie Stabenow.

James graduated from West Point in 2004 and went to Iraq in 2007. He served as an Army captain in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was a Ranger-qualified officer who flew Apache helicopters and led two platoons. He is now president of the James Group International, founded by his father, and CEO of subsidiary Renaissance Global Logistics.

rse

porch-the rep's would rather be a minority party in congress or a legislature in a politically organized society than the majority party in a society that still treats certain areas as beyond the domain of government at any level.

Frau Festina Lente

More about John James:

His personal politics are driven by a belief in the Constitution, James said. An “unapologetic Christian,” he described himself as “pro-life,” pro-business and “pro-Second Amendment.”

James said he supports Donald Trump, praising the president for nominating Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and for stocking his foreign policy team with military generals.

“There’s not enough combat veterans in government “who understand the consequences of failed policies,” he said.

I wish I wasn't on mobile today. Would love to be able to do more digging.

More ***unconfirmed*** gossip about Moore's accusers. According to this, Corfman is in financial difficulty as she acknowledged but she also apparently has a history of similar accusations.

https://70news.wordpress.com/2017/11/10/roy-moores-two-accusers-leigh-corfmans-age-was-17-not-14-has-history-of-making-false-allegations-deborah-gibson-a-dem-volunteer/

She may also not be the age she claims, meaning she was older than 14 at the time of the alleged encounters.

Again, unconfirmed. But I suspect this is going to blow up in the left's faces.

Old Lurker

"But I suspect this is going to blow up in the left's faces."

I'd say that grenade is tightly held in both hands with both faces looking right at it. So blast away.

Frau Festina Lente

It's ugly, successful lawfare. Look what happened to Tom DeLay. Can you imagine most of us having to pay for legal help in such an event? Not everyone is a wealthy Manafort.

I am often skeptical about women accusing men. Fifth and sixth grade *girls* have accused male teachers of misconduct usually done in pairs and in retaliation for reprimands or punishment at school.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

It occurs to me that the rise of social media as well as various sites on the Internet, have had unintended consequences, which we have seen play out over the last election.

1. People are not captive to the networks and cable outlets for information. That means they cannot push one story line on the public.

2. People have learned to use search engines to do their own investigating, so that a bunch of citizen reporters have gained followings on Twitter and Facebook. I follow 5-6 of these people on Twitter, myself. This means lots of stories which normally would remain hidden have come to light.

3. Because TV viewing is down, and because of the internet, people are more immune to political advertising. This means the financial model of many political consulting companies (like Karl Rove's old firm) which charged a percent of ad dollars placed as their fees to the candidate, is done. In fact, MOST of the political advertising is starting to look stale and ineffective. Consultant money will be withering.

I think these three areas are causing panic in the political class, because the people have wised up to the games they play. Not everyone, of course, but enough that it makes it really difficult to just run some ads, make a few speeches and show up on election day. People are demanding answers and a track record.

On top of that, people have wised up to the professional conservatives, people like Kristol and his crew, for example. Kristol's influence on the GOP is fading fast. That explains his desperation.

I don't know if this change will necessarily be for the better, since a lot of younger voters have been harmed by the Mind Arson rse writes about. Right now, though, it's a good explanation of the panic we see in the GOP (not counting whatever shady actions they have been involved in which are about to be uncovered).

Old Lurker

Another example of losing the language?

"A North Carolina air traffic controller with access to a control tower was arrested Friday for possessing, transporting and acquiring a weapon of mass destruction, police said.

Paul George Dandan, 30, was booked along with his roommate, Derrick Fells, in Charlotte, local reports said.

The arrests arose out of an investigation into a Nov. 3 call to police concerning an individual with an explosive, according to WCNC in Charlotte.

Police said that Fells admitted building a pipe bomb to use against a neighbor, "

Frau Festina Lente

OL - That gives a new meaning to "There goes the neighborhood!"

Mister Rogers is not happy about all the bad neighbors in the news lately.

News from the home front:

Our furnace crapped out yesterday. The guy who will work on it for cheap (a friend of my son's) is out of town until Monday. So, I have a dandy heater here in my bedroom and am fine, but the rest of the house is at 56 degrees right now. (Thank goodness before selling it the owners put in good windows and insulated siding!)

I am making chili for supper which seems appropriate. Daughter is wrapped up in a quilt and a heating pad with a space heater watching Netflix.

If we had an oil burner I would know some tricks, but it's a gas furnace with the dreaded electronics, so we will just tough it out until Monday.

Buford Gooch

MM, i hope you are using your oven to help heat the place.

Dave (in MA)

Damn, MM. Furnaces never crap out in the Summer when it would be more convenient.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Buford Gooch,

Hope. Ovn doeson't work, either. We bought aused cgas stove when we moved in and didn't think to use the oven (it was summer and hot) until after the warranty expired. LOL!

That was first on my list of things to get, but looks like the furnace is going to the head of the line.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Clarice,

We had a warranty but it has expired. The service we had a couple of weeks ago was a friend of my son's. At the time, they thought that it was the thermostat but after removing it and putting a new one on, then removing the new one (which didn't work) they found a loose wire. (Might be part of our MICE problem.)

ANyway, we are ok as we have a couple of space heaters and it's not too bad. I think it's supposed to start warming up tomorrow.

I grew up in an old 1860 farmhouse which had NO heat in the upstairs. We slept under Hudson Bay blankets and ran downstairs in the morning to dress over the registers on the first floor. I am pretty tough.

Since my son and his cat have moved in we have a little more leeway with the budget. He's picking up an extra shift as a bartender tonight, so we're good.

From an American Greatness column out a few days back: NeverTrump Makes a Left Turn

Kristol is rooting for the implosion of the GOP because that’s what he predicted would happen if Trump was elected. With a history of poor political prognostication, Kristol is hell-bent on making sure the Republican Party pays the price for nominating and electing Trump, even if it means the other side, with its destructive agenda of progressive policies, wins. Miss Marple the Deplorable

Clarice,

My grandmother wouldn't have even known what chutney is.

Around here persimmons are for pudding - the only argument is baked or steamed.

That got me to wondering about regional specialties and such. Indiana doesn't have many regional specialties, unlike places like New Orleans or areas with lots of strong ethnic neighborhoods. Besides persimmon pudding, the other regional food that we pay attention to is the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. Now exactly haute cuisine around here. HA!

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta met with the founder of the opposition research firm behind the Trump dossier just after the dirty document was published earlier this year, according to a new report in The New York Times.

The revelation is significant because Podesta, a longtime Democratic operative, recently told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he did not know who paid the research firm, Fusion GPS, to produce the dossier, which BuzzFeed published on Jan. 10.

Porchlight

MM, I'm guessing Clarice might be using the Fuyu persimmons which are more like apples. Indiana persimmons are softer and more astringent.

Hock Tan moves into the spotlight with $130bn Qualcomm bid
Broadcom chief executive has reputation for timing and operational efficiency
Hock Tan was feeling sensitive. As the most acquisitive executive in the chip industry, it was probably inevitable that his rapid-fire spate of deals — capped this week by a $130bn run at struggling Qualcomm — would bring charges of opportunism.

The folks at Qualcomm have no idea what is trying to descend upon them.
First, Hock Tan gives preference for office and lab space to the group with the highest profit margins.
Second, if you don't have at least a 20% profit margin, you don't work for Hock Tan any more.

Clarice Feldman

Yes, fuyu persimmons--texture more like apples. I used almost the same recipe as I use for mango chutney but this came out very spicy. Chutney is a good way to use ripe fruit you won't be getting to before it spoils--and is a nice accompaniment to curries or roasted meats of any kind. Also great to make chicken salad with--cube cooked chicken--mix up some chopped onions (any kind, including green) add curry powder and some chutney mixed with mayo, fresh or dried fruit and nuts. If you have cilantro sprinkle some leaves on top.

Yes, MM, the NC persimmons are the same. The common or American persimmon is spread broadly through all of the southeast and even further north and west.
